Mom, You're Incredible!.......2000-05-22
This book is wonderful. My husband gave it to me for Mother's Day and I have recommended it to all my friends. If you ever have had even one day where you wondered if staying at home was the best thing for you and your kids, this book is a must read.
Mom your incredible........2000-01-05
This book is excellent for any women who has a family or is thinking of having a family, or thinking of not having a family. It covers all aspects of childraising, whether you are a stay at home or a working mom. It also reassures you that you are probably a pretty normal mom. Good days and bad days. It will also confirm that this is one of the biggest carreer choices that you can make. I found this book excellent and I've raised two children already. I feel all moms with children at home now should read this book and recommend it to thier friends. This is a very easy reading book. Smile, frown, and think with this book.

Seventh Virginia Cavalry (Virginia Regimental Histories Series)
ASIN: 0801869528 |
Book Description
First printed in 1907, A History of the Laurel Brigade: Originally the Ashby Cavalry of the Army of Northern Virginia and Chew's Battery presents a nearly contemporary view of the lauded Confederate unit.
Recruited from the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia (with many troops volunteering from nearby Maryland), this Confederate cavalry unit fought under General Stonewall Jackson early in the Civil War. Led by one of the grandest "cavaliers" of them all -- General Turner Ashby -- until his death in early 1862, the unit eventually formed part of General J.E.B. Stuart's cavalry corps, moving back and forth between the tidewater and the Valley as military necessity dictated.
"Of all the Confederate images that survive from the American Civil War, few surpass that of the Southern cavalry in its boldness, recklessness, and dash. One of the most famous mounted units to serve the Confederacy was the Laurel Brigade. [These] horsemen gained recognition for their determination and skill as warriors on the field, while at the same time acquiring a reputation for an indifference to military discipline and organization. In time the brigade matured, due in large part to a string of commanders who instilled discipline and turned the Laurel Brigade into one of the most versatile units in the army." -- from the Introduction
Customer Reviews:
History of the Laurel Brigade.......2002-12-14
A long unit history, compiled by participants some time postwar, about a brigade which contemporary scholars have perhaps underrated.
Originally Ashby's Valley cavalry and always looking back upon him as their most beloved leader, the Laurels (named during the war by Rosser) participated in Jackson's Valley Campaign. Under Grumble Jones' command, they went on a raid into West Virginia in early '63--something I don't recall being covered by Longacre or any other CS cavalry historian, but if the writers here are not exaggerating, it was an impressive accomplishment. No doubt, after riding 700 miles in 30 days, they were less than thrilled at shining themselves up for the Brandy Station review.
And, interestingly, where almost every primary cavalry document I've read takes a moment during the Brandy Station review to praise Stuart, his appearance on a horse and so forth, the Laurels are tellingly silent.
The battle of Brandy Station gets much detail and good description, and while there's a bit of a gap around the start of the Gettysburg campaign (perhaps not coincidentally), the rearguard fighting is well told. The account continues through various actions to the Valley Campaign of '64, and this is interesting again, because this unit has been rather derided during that campaign. "The laurel is a running vine," General Early is said to have scoffed. According to this text, he might better have said, "The laurel is a raiding into West Virginia and bringing me supplies..." Two more impressive raids, one in 25' snow, took place during this period. So perhaps the Laurels weren't as pathetic as contemporary scholars seem to accept (cf. Lee's Miserables; Lee's Cavalrymen), though the unit historians do lament the state of their mounts and materiel.
An interesting and valuable account, and, though obviously written by interested participants, seeming to suggest that this unit contributed more to the Confederacy than it commonly receives credit for.

4 1/2* Round Up!.......2005-07-02
A group of coyotes wearing bright Hawaiian shirts (and a non-conformist in plaid) satisfy their mathematical and gustatory appetites in this clever "Mathstart" series book (Level 2; ages 6 and up). The Coyotes -- Clever, Cool, Careful, Clumsy, and young Little One--look out over the desert from the porch of their ranch. There are roadrunners everywhere, but no subpoenas. (The book judiciously omits crates labeled "ACME" label, or coyotes named "Wile E.") "'There must be hundreds of them!' said Cool Coyote." The coyotes separate to verify this, but Clever Coyote (after failing to catch a running roadrunner) claims, "I bet I can do it in my head and come really close." When Clever Coyote rounds the individual number counts to the nearest ten and adds them, his estimate is only two more than the actual count. In similar fashion, the coyotes compare their counts and rounded estimates of tasty grasshoppers and zebra-tailed lizards.
Steve Bjorkman paints his desert with soft shades of purple and dotted browns. Large green cacti break up this landscape, and the Hawaiian-shirted coyotes (wearing shades, sipping lemonade, chasing prey) give a playful air to the rounding lesson. Bjorkman's splashy, colorful style extends to the lizards, one of which peers at the reader from the bottom of the page. There's one very annoying discontinuity; however, and it's not possible to tell whether this is due to the illustrator, author, and/or publisher. On pp.14-15, Clever Coyote comments (about the lizards): "There can't be that many" and "Why don't you count them and see?" However, Clever Coyote is not pictured on the 2-page spread. One could also quibble over the implication that the coyotes' rounding is faster than adding. The book doesn't really compare adding rounded versus unrounded numbers, nor does it compare counting vs. estimating. As set up here, the coyotes' exact counts precede the rounding estimate; apparently, methods of estimating are beyond the book's scope.
Still, author Stuart J. Murphy presents the general topic clearly and in an entertaining manner. He gives the animals human personalities, while retaining--at least in Clever Coyote-their animal habits. On each spread, Murphy includes "factoids," information about coyotes and the desert environment (e.g., "Factoid: Roadrunners can fly, but they usually run. They can go as fast as 25 miles an hour.") These facts could lead to some interesting discussions about biomes, food chains, etc. The last two pages restate the rounding rules ("numbers that end in 5 or higher should be rounded up), and present several school and home activities to reinforce the concept.
Book Description
The day of the Naming is an important one for young roadrunners. That's when roadrunner parents judge the speed, courage, and hunting skill of their offspring and choose fitting names for them.
One proud fledgling dreams of being named Muscles, or Dash, or even Hunter. If only he hadn't pursued those three juicy grasshoppers for a final snack. If only he'd remembered his parents' lesson: "Always look before you leap." If only he'd paid more attention to the mouse family that had lost two children to a nearby snake. If only the rattler had given some warning before it struck....
Miraculously, the young roadrunner survives the attack, but not without damage. With their son's feet swollen to such an enormous size, his parents have no choice but to give him the humiliating name of Thunderfoot.
It's enough to make a roadrunner wallow in self-pity and give up. But the only thing bigger than Thunderfoot's feet is his heart, and with some not always gentle goading from a wise old gopher tortoise named Berland, he finds the courage to go forward and seek his destiny -- and to become the stuff of legends.

odd, intense pictures, story does not track.......2004-07-22
We sure are sorry to write a less than thrilled review for a book that looked and sounded so good. Our 3-year old daughter was really looking forward to receiving this book and, possibly, taking it to share with her class for "desert" week. We love roadrunners; she's had a stuffed one from a trip to AZ since she was less than a year old.
This book was so disappointing. The photos are scary on a majority of pages: boldly colored, large, wide-open mouthed roadrunners with bugged eyes chasing wildly after bugs and lizards. The story itself is about roadrunners often settling for non-lizard meals, but craving and madly pursuing lizards to eat.
Theme aside, the story itself could track so much better from page spread to page spread. The authors tried to do too much. The theme of roadrunners hotly pursuing frightened lizards and bugs to eat is interrupted with pages here and there about the physical description and vocalizations of roadrunners. The result is a badly disjointed story line. Even the "chorus" does not flow with rhymes on preceding or subsequent page spreads.
We did like the rhymes in the book, but they are almost entirely overshadowed by the poor flow of the story and the frightening pictures. The book is absolutely not worth purchasing for the rhymes alone (they are not that consisent or good). The book could be so much better if it either stuck only to the theme of "what roadrunners eat" OR (in our opinion a better choice) "all about roadrunners".
A Great New Science Book.......2000-06-29
Told in rhythmic verse and containing wonderful water color illustrations of desert nature scenes, this book introduces many facts about roadrunners in a way that children will love and not soon forget. My 8-year old loves this book, and so do I!
Lizards for Lunch: A Roadrunner's Tale.......2000-02-16
My kids (3 and 5) love this book! They don't have many other books that make them laugh so consistently (and teach them wonderful things at the same time). Storad and Atwood have hit upon a great combination of entertainment and education where the desert is concerned!

Book Description
Dell Fletcher is the Roadrunner, a black major-league baseball star who seems to have it all. He’s married to his college sweetheart, Leah, and they have two children and a dream home in Los Angeles. But an injury has sidelined his hot career, and prescription medication and depression are pulling him into a downward spiral, leaving Leah feeling emotionally distanced and lonely. Their fighting escalates, and one night Dell commits an act of violence that changes the course of their lives forever.
But Angel Lopez, the cop who arrests Dell, decides to take the law into his own hands. Determined to teach the famous athlete a lesson, he drives Dell to the worst part of town and tries to kick him out of the car. The men struggle and the car crashes. When Angel comes to, Dell is gone and no one knows if he’s dead or alive.
Leah is grateful when a guilt-stricken Angel offers to chase the media away from her home and help out around the house, “just until Dell comes home.” She and her family grow to trust him, and Angel falls in love with the Roadrunner’s lovely, grieving wife. Will Dell find his way home? Will Angel replace him? And what really happened that dark night the Roadrunner disappeared?
Customer Reviews:
Fast, furious and entertaining.......2007-08-23
In Roadrunner Trisha Thomas presents the seemingly perfect family Dell and Leah Fletcher. Dell and Leah are classic lovers from college who have a wonderful history but have hit a bump in the road. Dell unravels from a injury resulting in drugs and alcohol abuse leading to his dismisal from the league while Leah become victim to aggravation and loneliness. A moment of strife and confrontation between a grief stricken Dell and an over-burden Leah changes their lives forever. From accidents, arguments, infatuation, substitute lovers and fading dreams of what could be, the suspense in Roadrunner chronicles heartache, lost, frustration, false facades, lust, denial and redemption to its fullest. I read this novel in two days and it was well worth the trip.
Oh w/o a doubt, one of the WORST books I've ever read...featuring Officer Stalker and Lady Dingbat *SPOILER ALERT*.......2006-11-06
I'm sorry to be so harsh, but this book was so horrible. I absolutely did not buy one single word of this story. The whole accident at the beginning was way too unbelievable. Officers leaving citizens stranded and causing accidents and not reporting it. Then lying about it all (yes, omission is lying) and lying to the man's wife...All the while insinuating...no FORCING his way into their lives. Only days after the man disappeared. Making assumptions and assuming another man's role. Unacceptable and hard to buy. He practically preyed on all of them. Accosting Leah on her steps...um, he should know that NO MEANS NO. It was so insulting. I hope no one was actually rooting for this man? He was just repulsive. All around. Wanting to kill Squire, Leah's friend. Get out of here. I'm glad the story ended with him getting his due, but I'm also glad that the Fletcher family had their ending. No other way, b/c of the way this book was written would be acceptable.
Oh, and you mean to tell me that this woman never EVER thought to talk to maybe a detective or another person at the station to find out about her husband? She finds out he was never booked and she doesn't get curious? Gimme a break.
If you must read this, do what I did and borrow it from the library.
"Off Base".......2006-10-30
This novel hits alot of life situation that one time another we all have to endure. The storyline are great, sectioning off family, and work.We all are roadrunner somewhere in life.Nice book!!Must read!
Average.......2005-07-17
Leah is married to Dell Fletcher, a famous baseball player, who has recently suffered a bad injury that puts a halt to his career. The injury puts a strain on their relationship, with Dell not being able to handle not playing, and he is addicted to pain pills. When Dell disappears for awhile, Leah finds herself attracted to Angel the cop, who is in charge of Dell's case. I thought the book was ok, but kind of boring at times, I also thought the situation with Angel could have ended a little different.
A story of love, relationships, betrayal, and forgiveness.......2005-02-12
I read Ms. Thomas's first novel, and I was eager to read the second. I am torn on whether or not to say that I was disappointed. I will assume that you have some idea of what the story was about, from reading the reviews above. My problem was not with storyline, but with the depth. I still don't feel like I got to know Leah -- who she was, what motivated her. For example, when the author writes at the end of the story was Leah had been unhappy in her marriage for a while, I am surprised to read it. That wasn't clearly conveyed before. It was clear that her husband, Dell, had problems, but not that she or that he had been unhappy for years before the problems began. I was also able to quess where Dell had been after he "disappeared," long before it was clearly revealed, and I really, really wish that Ms. Thomas had concealed that from the reader a little more, so that it would have been more of a suprise. As it was, there was neither buildup nor shock when I learned where he had been.
Finally, I will say that I truly enjoyed the portrayal of Angel. Thomas does a good job of getting into his past, his thoughts, his motivations, his desires in a subtle, but intriquing way. I enjoyed the way she played up his moral, concerned-officer role slowly. He seems like he is just has a crush on Leah, and bit by bit it is clear that he is self-righteous, controlling, petty, and selfish, not just obsessed. He really did seem harmless at first, and the reader slowly comes to see that he isn't quite right, even though he doesn't see that himself. Ms. Thomas makes it clear that Angel finds his actions justified.
Overall, I enjoyed the book. I appreciate that it was not a completely frivolous read, raising some interesting, important questions about love and relationships and forgiveness. And betrayal. And I do recommend it, and I look forward to reading her third book. I'll be going to the bookstore today.

Meinzer hits another homerun.......2007-02-06
A delightful book with a plethora of wonderful photos. If you are looking for a quick read and a book to share with your kids about this amazing bird this is the one. Roadrunners are truly one of natures best adapted creatures and this book does them great service.
The Roadrunner.......2005-04-11
Known to most of us only through the beloved cartoon character, the roadrunner is a fascinating bird which inhabits the rugged environment of the American southwest. The photographs in this book are excellent; they truly bring out the character of the species, and show in particular to what lengths the roadrunner has to go to in order to secure a meal, which is often a snake or a lizard. I really enjoyed this book.
A Long Awaited Portfolio.......2000-05-17
Having grown up in roadrunner country, I've always had a fondness for these unusual birds. One of my major complaints about existing literature on the species was the lack of good roadrunner photographs -- now that void has been filled by Wyman Meinzer. The highlight of this book is that it's a pictorial record of the roadrunner from every angle: hatching to hunting to breeding to nesting. The accompanying text provides a running commentary on what the pictures show. All in all, an excellent addition to the personal library of any bird watcher.

A nice gift for a birder to give to children........2005-01-04
Are you looking for a special book to share the magic of desert birds with a child or grandchild? You may find that Roadrunner's Dance is just what you are looking for. In this Southwestern creation tale, Desert Woman creates a new animal to help keep the bully, Rattlesnake, under control. She gives the creature gifts from Quail, Raven, Owl, Blue Jay, Heron and Eagle. The result is Roadrunner, an awkward conglomeration of parts, who in the end, prevails over the fearsome rattlesnake. The book's illustrations are bright and have a magical feeling.
Although Rudolfo Anaya is best known for his highly recommended novels for teens, this book is suitable for children ages 4-8. I think this would make a lovely gift.

The least understood bird receives rare, individual attention.......2006-03-19
The roadrunner is an icon of the Southwest so you'd think there would be many studies out on the roadrunner already - but it's one of the least understood and rarely receives individual examination. Here to correct that deficit is THE REAL ROADRUNNER, a guide to the behavioral patterns of the bird. Martha Maxon is a retired zoologist and environmental consultant who grew up in southern Texas: her assembly of literature and science about the roadrunner come from years of personal observation and research and provide a scholarly yet accessible survey.
