Book Description
Vaccine A tells a story of betrayal, of medical arrogance flourishing in the absence of public accountability, shielded by an unquestioning deference to national security. Investigative journalist Gary Matsumoto reveals that thousands of young men and women in the U.S. Armed Forces were subjected to medical experiments that were conducted without their knowledge or consent-and that have put them in grave danger. Not only have military scientists performed unethical experiments on U.S. and British soldiers; not only are they refusing to admit either the experiments or the effects they caused; not only are they continuing to use a deadly substance in experimental vaccines-this substance is being developed for use in vaccines intended for mass immunization around the globe. In an alarming narrative, Vaccine A recounts this scientific tragedy-from the U.S. Army's tradition of medical experimentation on soldiers through to the present, where the consequences of these experimental vaccines, if administered to civilians, will be unimaginably devastating.

How the government hates ill veterans and wants them to die.......2007-09-30
The books documents a slow death. Painful and debilitating. The government does not care.
A fascinating subject, but a repetitive book.......2007-02-18
I had been waiting a year to find the time to read this intriguing book. However, having just finished it, I find myself dissatisfied and frustrated. While the subject is certainly interesting and one on which we should probably all educate ourselves, I found the book to be extremely repetitive. As a medical student, the science wasn't over my head but I caught myself skimming parts of the last 75 pages for new information that hadn't already been written about earlier in the book. Matsumoto says the same thing 400 different ways... the only part that drew me in were the personal stories scattered throughout the pages. Reading the book jacket is probably sufficient to tell you everything you'd want to know... I'm thoroughly disappointed.
It reads like a novel.......2006-07-13
Gary Matsumoto is a very talented author. This book is written in the style of a novel, even though it is non-fiction and scientifically oriented. The science is explained in lay person's terms and is easy to understand. The story is well paced and keeps one's interest.
Everyone to whom I loaned this book just loved it, even though its frightening to think we're living under a government that would allow harmful vaccines to be used on people. The information in this book is important to the general public and could save lives. The only people who would not enjoy this book are the ones who trust the government and the pharmaceutical industry and could not stand to have that trust shaken.
This excellent exposý should be a bestseller!.......2006-05-06
I had originally planned on a military career and was destined for Annapolis back in the 1980s, but then learned that hundreds of U.S. servicemen had been cruelly abandoned in Vietnam by "our" government as POWs. (Read "Kiss The Boys Goodbye")
Well, the treason continues...
Matsumoto's superb book chronicles modern evidence that our military has again been given the shaft. While Vaccine A may not have originally been a conspiracy, the subsequent coverup certainly is. Afflicted men and women who honorably fought for America are being told that their vaccine-induced afflictions are imaginary or fakery.
If you want to serve your country, be sure that you are not taking a dramatic health risk from your government in doing so. If you've a child who is considering enlisting, read this book before they unknowingly sign away their life for dangerous medical experimentation performed without their informed consent.
Squalene vaccines are now being stored for the rest of us, for the next overblown or contrived health issue. You look at your food before you eat it, don't you? Maybe you should look at the next vaccine very carefully before it's injected into your body.
Our Gulf War vets had no way of knowing that the squalene vaccine was extremely harmful. But thanks to their unwitting sacrifice, we can protect ourselves with this book.
A Must Read for All Citizens!.......2005-06-05
What is the cost of Freedom? Within this well researched book is an example. The Anthrax vaccine given during the Gulf War through current times, laced with a toxic substance call squalene, is such an example. The research within this book is beyond question. Every veteran, patriot, and ordinary citizen of the USA, Canada, Great Britian, Austraila, and possibly New Zeland should read this book, no holds barred! Highly recommended!
Book Description
Vengeance is a true story that reads like a novel. It is the account of five ordinary Israelis, selected to vanish into "the cold" of espionage secrecy -- their mission to hunt down and kill the PLO terrorists responsible for the massacre of eleven Israeli athletes at the Munich Olympics in 1972.
This is the account of that secret mission, as related by the leader of the group -- the first Mossad agent to come out of "deep cover" and tell the story of a heroic endeavor that was shrouded in silence and speculation for years. He reveals the long and dangerous operation whose success was bought at a terrible cost to the idealistic volunteer agents themselves.
"Avner" was the leader of that team, handpicked by Golda Meir to avenge the monstrous crime of Munich. He and his young companions, cut off from any direct contact with Israel, set out systematically to find and kill the central figures of the PLO's Munich operation, tracking them down wherever they lived.
The mechanics, the horror, the day-by-day suspense of what they did surpass by far anything John le Carré or Robert Ludlum could imagine, as they themselves were tracked in turn (and some killed) by PLO assassins, changing identities constantly, moving from country to country, devoting their young lives to the brutal task of vengeance.
Vengeance is a profoundly human document, a real-life espionage classic that plunges the reader into the shadow world of terrorism and political murder. But it goes far beyond that, to explore firsthand the feelings of disgust and doubt that gradually came to torment each member of the Israeli team, and that in the end inexorably changed their view of the mission -- and themselves.
Vengeance opens a window onto a secret world, a book that at the same time inspires and horrifies. For its subject is an act of revenge that goes to the very heart of the ancient biblical questions of good and evil.
Customer Reviews:
An eye-opener on the nature of counter-terrorism.......2007-10-10
I read "Notes on a controversy" at the end of the book first, because this justification of the text by the author deals with the issue of veracity. The book has apparently been attacked on this score, and of course the very nature of the subject excludes the possibility of total and certain verification of all the facts, but the author makes a convincing case of the techniques he used in circumventing this problem and checking out his main source's story. That story itself is gripping, not only because it describes in thriller-like fashion the actions undertaken by an Israeli hit team against the masterminds behind the killings of Israel's Olympic team in 1972, but also because of what I would call, perhaps oddly, its humanity: the personal torment felt by the members of the hit team is faithfully portrayed, and is perhaps the most unforgettable part of the narrative. One closes the book with the uneasy feeling that there really is no way to avenge, let alone deter, the monstrous deeds perpetrated by terrorist scum. But I do not share a shred of the hit team's doubts that their actions were fully justified. This book is an eye-opener on the nature on terrorism, but also on the ruthlessness demanded of those who are called to combat it. The book leaves one with few illusions about "the secret world" either, which adds to its aura of truthfulness.
A Very Plausible Account of Events.......2007-08-20
Vengeance succeeds on many levels. It could easily stand as a classic tradecraft work about espionage operations or as a fictional spy thriller. It is action packed and a real page-turner. I was disappointed when it ended.
Terrorism succeeds, when it succeeds, by using violence to send a public message to one's opposition. It amounts to negotiation by murder and bomb blasts. The message being: "If we aren't safe, you aren't safe either." That was the message that the Black September organization sent to Israel with their 1972 Munich action, and it was the same message that the Israeli state sent back to Black September via Avner's hit team. Terrorism is warfare by symbolic violence, although it's more than symbolic if you're there when the bombs go off or the shooting starts.
As to whether all aspects of Vengeance are literally "true," I admit I have my doubts. But so what? It has verisimilitude where it counts and whether this or that specific detail is literally true or is a mishmash of several events or characters combined is largely irrelevant. The ongoing terror campaigns going on all over the world today show that the morally ambiguous world that Avner and his opposition existed in 1972 hasn't changed that much. And it probably never will.
Spies? Terrorists? Assassinations? The Middle East? A True Story? Yes!.......2007-06-18
The Jewish state of Israel has always had an aura of intrigue because of the reputation of the Mossad. This is a true story of a group of spies who were on a mission too difficult and high profile for the Mossad. This book is an excellent story in itself, but the fact that it is a true story makes it even more fascinating. Quite a bit of history on terrorism against Israel is given. Personally, I was ashamedly ignorant of the persecution that Israel suffered in the 60's and 70's through terrorism. This book brought to light the terror that was leveled against Israel. Jonas does an excellent job of writing, in a humble way that is uncharacteristic of many authors. The very nature of his writing lends credibility to his story. The afterward by the author is an exciting supplement to the book, giving the author's rebuttal to those who question the validity of the book. I loved the way the book unfolded, cold and slow in the beginning but slowly picking up speed and never slowing down until the last page. I look forward to seeing Stephen Spielberg's movie based on the book as Spielberg has shown in the past that he can successfully make good films that stay true to the books that they are based upon.
A reoccurring theme throughout the book is the morality behind terrorism and counter terrorism. At what point does the defender become the aggressor? America has faced this problem as well in the past few years trying to define the fine line between defense and cold-blooded war. Is counter terrorism justified? Was Israel's decision to assassinate top terrorist leaders warranted, or did these actions put the Israelis on ethical par with the murderous terrorists? The book clearly shows how the decisions of war are difficult, and there is often no straightforward moral line in such choices. There will always be dispute and debate between Moses' law of eye for an eye and Jesus' law of turning the other cheek. While both of these laws seem to be incompatible with each other, it will do humanity well to find how these two laws full of wisdom come together in some sort of compromise.
One of the best books I"ve ever read.......2007-05-21
I don't dole out 5 stars to books easily. But this one definitly earned it. If you've seen Munich, you know what the book is about, though the movie did deviate from the book in some ways, it was mostly the same.
It was a captivating book, and in the end, it trancended your typical "spy novel" thriller, in that it brought up deep questions regarding our notions of patriotism, militant service to country, and the way nations use their patriotic heros like disposable pawns.
bravo for a well written page turner - I loved reading this book........2007-05-02
This is the type of book that you will only put down if sleep is absolutely necessary, and you are able to "dine in moderation" knowing that tomorrow you will get to enjoy more satisfying reading. The reader feels as if he is in the mind of the protagonist, very rarely do I find this in an 'as told to' format. Next stop of course will be the movie rental. I found this in an airport bookstore and truth be told I wouldn't have minded if the plane was delayed for hours, but as a matter of fact the plane was on time, however, the book was finished before the return trip.

A fascinating account of a counter-terrorist mission.......2005-01-08
I'm sure that none of us will be surprised to learn that there are indeed counter-terrorists. And that, yes, they can actually be trained to kill people when necessary. That they do not use their twenty-two caliber pistols just to scare people, but to fire two shots, with no pause between them, at a human target.
But why?
Jonas tells us why. Because after the massacre of eleven Israeli athletes at the Munich Olympics in 1972, no other nations were prepared to help bring eleven of the surviving murderers to justice. Jonas also tells us what sorts of people become counter-terrorists. They must be loyal and courageous. But not goons, not psychopaths, and not super-sophisticated James Bond types. Not too imaginative: that produces too much doubt. Not too daring: that causes incaution. Not too fanatical: that makes one unstable. And the author reminds us that whether one's cause is good or bad, terrorism is not the way to pursue it and counter-terrorism is a proper and moral response.
Jonas also addresses the issue of whether counter-terrorism actually produces peace. Usually it does not, just as police pursuit of criminals rarely stops all crime. On the other hand, I think we can all see the problems with letting murderers roam the world untouched, boasting of their crimes, openly recruiting people to the cause of murdering innocent civilians, and being treated as heroes by the media and other admirers.
In this exciting tale, we find out what happens when one tries to avenge the spectacular murders of some innocent civilians. We see that some targets are basically "soft." One can discover their whereabouts without much trouble and simply kill them. But a few are "hard," and are very professional at staying alive. It is very difficult for a small team to kill even one such person. And indeed, this team found it next to impossible. On top of that, if one begins by killing one or more soft targets, the terrorists will fight back, with assassins going after the counter-terrorists.
I recommend this book. I think it has a moral, namely that rather than use small counter-terrorism squads, we'd all be better off if there were some international cooperation in apprehending terrorists and bringing them to justice.
AWESOME!! Gripping and well documented. A gem........2004-10-06
Whoa. This book is so good I can't wait to read it again! The reasons are manifold: it's one of the best dramas you'll read, regardless of your interest in spy novels or Middle East history, and you become fully emotionally invested in this story. One thing I very much appreciate about the author's work is the extensive documentation and annotation. He simply comes right out and tells you how exactly his version of events differs from other accounts and why. Well done!
Also, you get a distinct sense of what it must have been like to be in Israel in the 70's - barely more than 20 years after its founding. For instance, it was fascinating learning about the basic cultural divide between the western and eastern european jews.
This book will take you from interested to riveted to captivated, and then from shocked to incredulous. The only thing I absolutely hated was that it came to an end. And the end has an extra shocker you could not anticipate. This has to be the best historical novel ever written about intelligence services, and is also one of the best books I've ever read.
I'm lucky enough to have serendipitously purchased a hardcover at a local used book store. I didn't know anything about the book then, but now I know I own a gem.
The Olympic Massacre is avenged........2003-04-07
As some of the previous readers have stated, this is a great read on counter terrorism. Those Palestinians who had a role in the Olympic murders are dealt with by a professional hit squad sent out from Israel. Jonas makes the reader know who he is supporting, Avner and his four buddies assigned to track down eleven people who had a hand in the Munich murders.
I don't know if you can believe everything in this book. Jonas in his introduction and footnotes, states that some things were just not reported in the newspapers. When Avner and his buddies kill three Arabs in a church in Switzerland, and there are no news accounts, I wonder if this ever took place. Same with his buddies who were killed and the Athens KGB man, this might be fiction. Without knowing who Avner really is, this might be part true or even a novel.
All in all a great read on how Israel dealt with terrorism in the seventies. Israel put the fear of God in those who put fear in others. Just retribution.
Too bad it's out of print.......2003-01-05
It really is a shame that this book is no longer in print. Jonas provides readers with a wild ride through the fear, depression, grit and glory of a spy/assassin driven by the sole mission to avenge terrorism by killing the individual perpetrators.
Of particular interest to me was the weapons training recieved by the Israeli team who went after their targets. Using only .22 pistols, and occasionally no more than homemade slap-fire zipguns, they systematically tracked down and executed hardened terrorists. The level of training, focus and determination portrayed is something you have to read to believe.
It also gives me hope that there is a response to terrorism beyond the 'bomb it and pave it' strategy. Knowing that terrorists will be hunted down, no matter where they go, and killed in a grimy alley or a deserted tenement instead of in a blaze of glory may be a more effective approach to take.
I also appreciated the insight into the psyche of a trained assassin who wrestles with the mission he has been given, and watches as others around him begin to crack up from the strain. His account of how the lives of his fellow team members ended is a sobering picture of the biblical axiom that those who live by the sword die by it also.
If you can get your hands on this book, I would highly recommend it. It is a great story, comparable to any spy thriller and action novel you have picked up, but with the added bonus that it is true.
A great story... and even more.......2002-12-11
This book is not only about a historical event, but about international counterterrorism in general. In addition to being exciting, it is also educational, giving insight into how undercover counterterrorist operations (in this case, "hits") are carried out.

Book Description
Good friends like Heron and Turtle are good neighbors. Nothing is better than taking a nice long walk together (if Turtle can keep up!). And Turtle will do almost anything to make Heron comfortable at a surprise lunch. But perhaps best of all is being able to appreciate a night on the pond together.
In the tradition of Arnold Lobel's classic Frog and Toad books, Valeri Gorbachev brings us three enchantingly illustrated and written stories (and two lovable new characters) that celebrate the sweet pleasures of everyday friendship, a treasure for children beginning to read.

Heron and Turtle........2007-01-05
I recently purchased this book to share with the elementary teachers in the building where I sub. All of them gave it rave reviews because it was divided into several short, cute, stories each with its own lesson. They have all become fans of Gorbachev
A modern-day Frog and Toad friendship.......2006-06-08
Gorbachev, a Ukrainian immigrant, has written a lyrical story of friends enjoying each other's company, no matter the obstacles. In the style of another great "side-kick" pair, Frog and Toad, Heron & Turtle have three adventures on a summer day. They find, just like Frog and Toad, that although their companionship may have physical limitations, their willing accommodations for each other lead to the sweet, simple pleasures of friendship. A great way to reinforce the idea with young readers/listeners that friendship, although not always easy, is always worth maintaining.

OF HISTORICAL INTEREST ONLY.......2006-11-01
This edition of this once popular book, is of little use to the modern birder other than for historical purposes. The original was produced in the very early 1900's (my copy is 1901) and does have color photos. What is interesting is that the photos, while extremely accurate, are of dead, stuffed birds placed in what are suppose to be natural settings. Early birders, more or less shot their birds, and not with a camera! I have to give this one two stars simply because the information as to distribution, etc. is quite out dated. I would hate to think that someone would purchase this work in the hopes of owning a good book on bird identification. There are so very many good ones out there now. That being said, if you can find one of the early copies, the ones with the photos, it does make for an interesting read.
Very Disappointed.......2001-08-04
Although the information here on birds is well organized and somewhat informative, there are no images or diagrams to accompany the text. This is a book about identifying birds, and there really isn't anything new here. Don't waste your money you can buy some very good pulp based books for the same or less money.
