Helpful!.......2000-11-15
This book was easy to follow and provided more practical information which I used throughout my pregnancy. I purchased other books for reference, but I read this one from cover to cover. I found the information was very helpful, especially for a first pregnancy. Buy and enjoy.
The information is good but difficult to find........1999-01-03
The book is hard to follow. It has only been useful in my last month of pregnancy. The way the book is structured does not permit you to get ready a little bit every month which was my objective in purchasing this book.

Great help to first-time parent.......2002-05-30
This book tells you where to save money, but also, where you should spend a bit more for the convenience of certain products. The checklists are very helpful. Baby stores provide checklists, but these lists usually recommend getting 10 of everything. This book lets you know what you really need and what should be optional. Highly recommended.
BIG HELP.......2001-06-14
This book was very helpful! I definately recommend it to all first time mothers.
My favorite gift for parents-to-be.......1999-06-21
I buy this for friends as soon as I hear that they are expecting their first. There are so many practical things that you just don't know until after you actually have a baby, and then you're stuck with the stroller that takes two hands and a PhD to fold up. This little book is solid consumer advice, and gives the feeling that these decisions are not that impossible after all.
outstanding, practical guidebook for preparing for a new baby.......1997-04-26
This is the only book I found with the kind of practical advice new parents need when they are preparing their home for the arrival of a new baby. From how many undershirts to buy for a winter baby vs. a summer baby, to equipment must-haves, this book is a thorough and helpful little volume. Written by a journalist confined to bed rest during her pregnancy, the book shows all the careful fact-collecting of a professional reporter. I have given this book to friends as a baby gift and can't recommend it highly enough

Book Description
Volume Two of the Six-Volume set, Rights and Duties joins the most significant writings in two crucial areas of ethical reflection and behavior. This collection provides students and scholars with the history of how humanity has argued for and against entitlements, rights, and protections for itself, and how humanity has argued for and against obligations, duties, and social responsibilities toward others.
Book Description
When Americans seek an escape from the worries and dilemmas of everyday life, the crystal blue waters and white sands of the Caribbean islands seem like the answer to a prayer. Yet this image of a tourist’s paradise hides a tumultuous history marked by strife and division over race, political power, and economic inequality. Olwyn Blouet explores the story of “the Caribbean” over the last 50 years, revealing it to be a region positioned at the heart of some the most prominent geopolitical issues of modern times.
Navigating a rich mélange of cultures and histories, Blouet unearths a complex narrative that is frequently overlooked in histories of the Americas. In stark contrast to widely-read guidebooks, this chronicle unflinchingly probes two strikingly different worlds in the Caribbean islands—those of the haves and the have-nots—created by the volatile mixture of colonial politics, racial segregation, and economic upheaval. The strategic political relations between Caribbean nations, Cuba in particular, and the world powers during the Cold War; the economic transformations instigated by tourism; and the modernizing efforts of Caribbean nations in order to meet the demands of a globalizing twenty-first century market are among the numerous issues explored by Blouet in her efforts to redress the historical record’s imbalance. The Contemporary Caribbean also explores the proud histories of the region's many nations in sports such as cricket and baseball, as well as their famed cuisines, and the uneasy balance today between local traditions and the vestiges of colonial influence.

Excellent Overview...Current and Perceptive.......2007-03-20
This is an up-to-date and serviceable introduction to developments in politics, culture and social issues faced by this region with particular emphasis on the period from 1945. In order to understand the Caribbean experience it is important to look at its history prior to this last half-century to understand how Europe and the U.S. 'discovered', exploited, and imposed their values on its peoples. No new ground is broken in this area, but it is all good information - the original native tribes, the importance of the sugar trade, the use of slave labor from Africa, the use of indentured workers from Asia when slavery ended, the resulting multi-ethnic character of the population, the growing sensitivity of the U.S. to foreign influence in the region, U.S. willingness to strategically intervene, the Cuban issue, etc.
It is difficult to find current commentary on the Caribbean for the non-academic or for the tourist who wants to go beyond the best cruise line deals and the best reefs to snorkel. This short book does a good job on recent developments in politics, economics, literature, music, even sports (especially cricket). Occasionally the author's prose is flat (e.g. p.114 on Bob Marley's achievements or the closing sentences of the book, p. 136), but this is a minor editing matter. Mention is made of the growing interest of China in the region, especially with the U.S. distracted by engagements in Iraq and Afghanistan, but clearly Latin America's rich resource base will be their focus not the Caribbean. Tourism has become a powerful dynamic for the region and this book identifies some of the issues worth further discussion by future writers. While acknowledging Cuba's disdain for essential freedoms (viz. press, assembly, speech), Blouet believes that U.S. attempts to isolate Cuba "punishes" the entire region, because Cuba's population and natural resources make it a natural hub of economic activity for all of the islands. Without Cuba's participation economic development will continue to be reliant on U.S. and European economies. We can speculate that an opportunity for greater regional commerce and development will arise with the eventual change of leadership in both countries.

Great Service.......2005-10-01
I had problems with the mailing and the company was very supportive and helped me figure out the problem. This was great quality
Some good information with no extras.......2003-05-07
Recent (post-WWII) American history is a highly interesting and frequently-overlooked genre under the overall umbrella of American history study. Many tend to simply forget about it -- after all, it's hard to step back from the times in which one lives and analyze them objectively -- or shrug it off as not important. After all, we LIVED that, right? -- How can it possibly stand up as history? This overlooks the self-evident but rarely-ackwnoledged fact that merely living through something does not mean you understand it -- or, as with one aspect of contemporary American history covered in this book, the counterculture, if you remember it, the saying goes, you weren't there. Certainly, recent history is as interesting and vital as any other era to the objective historian -- and it is certainly the most applicable to our current social and political climate. One can read ancient Greek texts and see how that great society laid the foundation for what is going on at the moment -- but it is much more cognizable, not to mention jolting, when reading about something that happened much more recently, which we can clearly discern as sowing the seeds for the present day. What one often forgets when reading histories of the days of yore is that all histories are inherently prejudiced -- and even, as Oscar Wilde pointed out, autobiographical. When reading about events that one has actually lived through, this oft-forgotten fact becomes apparent.
Though individual parts of post-1945 American history have inspired volumes upon volumes, and even mini cottage industries, general, overarching texts of the period are not abundant. In Our Times is one of the most prevalent. Though this book is often used as a college textbook, it works better as a single reading than as a textbook or a reference. Certainly, it contains a wealth of good information -- but it is presented in the driest, most unimaginable way possible. Chapters are long, with little to no break in text: no captions, graphics, or eye-catching features whatsoever, and very few pictures (none in color) or graphs. Chapters are broken up only by bold typeheadings, and quite rarely at that, making it very difficult to look things up or search for something quickly; this renders the book almost useless as a reference and quite limited as a textbook. As a sit-through read, though, it is quite adequate. This book lends itself more to the historically-curious individual reader than to the student or scholar.
Skidmore's Administration Text.......2000-12-13
The book reads a lot like an encyclopedia. It contains a lot of good information about social work administration, but is quite dry reading.
Book Description
'International relations textbooks share a similar risk of always speaking in the same voice. Not because of multi-handling, but instead thanks to a frequently impenetrable, introverted discourse
about theory. This makes Geir Lundestadâs book so welcome. He pays due homage to the important contribution of theory in the development of International Relations as a discipline, while escaping the standard focus on realism, liberalism and constructivism. Instead, he uses various branches of explanatory theory to provide an invaluable survey of world history after 1945'
-Australian Journal of Political Science
Fully revised and updated, the
Fifth Edition of Geir Lundestad's successful textbook on the history of international politics since 1945 will serve as an ideal introduction for all students seeking an accessible guide to world events in the post-war era up to the present day.
This new edition covers all the major international developments up to 2004, including a full assessment of 9/11, the 'war on terror' and the conflict in Iraq.
Long established as one of the leading and enduringly popular texts on international history,
East, West, North, South remains an essential companion for all students of international relations, world politics and international history.
Customer Reviews:
perhaps future editions should mention China more prominently?.......2006-09-25
Here is a recap of world history since 1945. Revolving around the Cold War. The focus is on the US-Soviet Union up to 1990, and on the US-Russia relations after that. The chapters are not in chronological order. Mainly because there is a chapter on decolonisation that fits awkwardly into the overall layout of the text. It is very difficult to write about world history in this time without splitting off various topics into different chapters, that span different times.
The "North, South" of the title refers to the developed and developing countries. Despite this prominent equivalence to the "East, West" of the Cold War, only 2 chapters out of 12 are about north-south issues. This relative underplaying may be correct, given the overriding central aspect of the Cold War.
China and its massive economic gains since 1979 gets relatively little discussion, and mostly in those 2 chapters on north-south. Future editions of this book might want to devote more space to China.

Book Description
The history of the rural West in modern times is in many ways the history of America. Family farms have vanished and the rise of cities and suburbs have made the West disproportionately urban since World War II. But even though the West may seem less rural today than it was a century ago, agriculture, rural life, and agrarian politics remain inextricably linked to the economy and culture of the entire region.
In this new collection of original essays, a team of outstanding scholars--Donald J. Pisani, Paula M. Nelson, David Rich Lewis, and others--survey the changes in farms, small towns, and reservations throughout the West during the post-War era. They offer a fresh look at the major aspects of the rural West's history since 1945, showing how the advent of agribusiness has changed the character of rural life and exploring the ways in which the West nevertheless remains uniquely rural.
Some of the essays treat subjects long important to studies of the West, such as the cattle industry, agriculture, migrant labor, water policy, and environmental concerns. Others consider topics of increasing interest: social change, ranch and farm women, and reservation life. Together, they show how rural Westerners continue to make their voices heard in the national debate over major issues, from civil rights and welfare to environmental protection and corporate regulation.
The Rural West Since World War II greatly enlarges our understanding of this immense region, as well as its ties to and impact on the nation's political history. The volume will be required reading for anyone interested in rural, agricultural, and Western history, as it clearly shows this familiar region to be more than wide open spaces.

Book Description
The monumental events in Eastern Europe and the Soviet Union must be understood, Jan Van Oudenaren argues, in the context of a process of East-West détente begun in 1953 in the aftermath of Stalin’s death. Van Oudenaren’s comprehensive and timely study examines the development of Soviet-Western détente from the death of Stalin to the unification of Germany.
In redefining détente as a process, rather than a code of conduct, Van Oudenaren looks to its origins in Soviet policy earlier than previously identified and analyzes both its history and character. His study explores the restoration of four-power negotiations in Germany and Austria in the mid-1950s, their subsequent breakdown in the Berlin crisis, their unexpected revival in 1990 in the form of âtwo plus fourâ talks on German unity, and the future of the Soviet Union as a European power.
Among the key elements of détente discussed are diplomacy, particularly the role of summit conferences; cooperation among parliaments, political parties, and trade unions; arms control; economic relations; and links among cultural institutions, churches, and peace movements.

Book Description
The eighth volume in Frederick Madden's monumental documentary history of the British Empire, this volume deals with some of the dependencies--the West Indies, British Honduras, Hong Kong, Fiji, Cyprus, Gibraltar and the Falklands--since 1948. Using documentary materials, as in the earlier volumes, the book illustrates the progress toward self-government and independence, including, for instance, the development of communal tensions in Cyprus and the de facto division of the island, and the handing back of Hong Kong to China. The volume also includes Madden's valedictory summary and overview of the evolution of imperial government in the dependencies covered in these volumes, beginning with the Anglo-Norman empire of the 12th century. Along with the earlier volumes, this book provides a valuable resource for researchers interested in British imperialism.

Book Description
This book provides detailed independent analyses of the successes and limitations of one of the most successful economic relationships in recent history: the Deutsche Mark and the Deutsche Bundesbank. With European economic and monetary union approaching, the lessons to be learnt from the German experience are now more important than ever. The Deutsche Mark has been one of the most stable currencies in the world for decades. The combination of a sound monetary structure and an anti-inflationary monetary policy have been the bedrock for unprecedented German economic success. This success, however, has not been unlimited or without risk. Fifty Years of the Deutsche Mark will give future European montary policy-makers the invaluable benefit of the German experience. The book combines chronological articles with others which follow the developments of a specific issue over the entire 50-year period. Issues covered include the central bank constitution, the central bank's relationship with fiscal policy-makers and with other banks, the role of the Bundesbank in European monetary integration, and the international significance of the Deutsche Mark. Individual accounts of the key monetary policy events in 1948 and 1990 as well as general articles on the `message' of German monetary policy and on academic deabte over German monetary policy round the book off. Sixteen eminent independent scholars were asked by the Bundesbank to contribute to this volume, and given full access to the Bank's records. The resulting articles provide comprehensive analysis of the successes and limitations of Europe's most powerful central bank. On June 20th, 1998, the Deutsche Mark will be 50 years old: this book will ensure that its legacy lives on.

A classic reference, revised and improved.......2003-04-18
This book represents a revision and extension of Ms. Low's earlier work, An Index and Guide to Audubon's Birds of America (Abbeville, 1988). It is a valuable reference for anyone interested in Audubon's folio bird prints. If you have a choice, select this more recent version than the out-of-print Abbeville edition. As in her earlier book, Ms. Low includes sizes of the plate marks for Havell Edition prints, and adds more information on the variants she encountered in a systematic review of four complete Havell Edition sets. The book also includes a wonderful bonus -- a detailed description of the Bien Edition (sometimes called the second folio edition of The Birds of America). Ms. Low's treatment is by far the most comprehensive information available in one place on this important and neglected work. As an Audubon dealer, and someone who has prepared web-based study guides of all the major Audubon editions, I have found endless uses for this book. It is a must-have reference for all serious students and collectors of Audubon's art.
Great Gift for Antique Collectors.......2003-03-19
Susanne Low conducted years of painstaking research to write this lovely book. She examined four complete 435-print sets of Audubon's double elephant folio and this detailed, comprehensive Guide is the result. Every variant of every print is described including the birds depicted, the exact size of the plate mark, and where and when Audubon painted the original. A similar section describes the 150 Bien edition chromolithographs that were made in 1858-1860. The information presented is invaluable to antique dealers and collectors because it enables even the casual user to authenticate prints.
I especially like her cross-references and cross-indexes that make it easy to compare the double elephant folio prints with the Biens and the Octavos. She even included a biographical section that describes all the people who helped Audubon along the way. Writing my own book - Audubon Art Prints - would not have been possible without using Susanne's book as a reference.
Excellent research, beautiful book........2002-11-16
Low's index has long been the bible for dealers and collectors of Audubon's Birds of America. Painstakingly accurate in its original edition, this new, updated and expanded version is produced with all the care of true booklovers. Elegant and useful. Thanks to Reese and Heald for making this invaluable tome available.
