5 out of 5 stars A moving ride along the journey of discovery.......2007-05-16

"From Autism... To All-Star" gave me a new perspective on autism -- the real-time, as-it-happens experience of a parent discovering that her child is autistic. Because Rhonda Brunett wrote this book as a journal to her son, Jordan, beginning before he was born, it is truly a first-hand account of her experience as she recognizes and accepts Jordan's autism. It is deeply personal and at times painful to read. The words were meant to be a child's keepsake. Instead, they become the documentation of discovery that this child is different than the others. The contrast between the words Rhonda writes to Jordan, and the accounts of family, friends, teachers, and other observers are especially moving. Those on the outside looking in see Jordan's differences long before his mother is ready to acknowledge them. Until she does, she becomes a woman on the edge, and we are right there with her. It is a privileged glimpse into this family's lives. Thank you Rhonda Brunett!

1 out of 5 stars Where's the beef?.......2006-11-20

Hi, I am a parent of a child with autism, also very high functioning. I thought this book might be insightful or inspirational. There is no real depth from the parents, and you get no real sense of the steps they took to help their child. I am thrilled for them that their son is doing so well, but this book is only good for someone who has read very little and/or has a extremely high functioning child. I would not recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars A MUST READ FOR PARENTS AND TEACHERS!.......2006-08-06

Did you ever wonder why children grow up the way they do? If so read this book and you will understand why it is so very important to give your child love and the right support that is needed to teach your child because without the love and support the child might grow up feeling as if they don't deserve to be here and end up getting into the wrong way of living. In this book Rhonda the mother of Jordan brings you through a spectacular journey on what it was like for her to love and educate her son Jordan who has autism. Although this book is based on a child with autism I feel that parents and teachers should use Rhonda's methods on how to love, teach and support not only the autistic child but the normal child as well.

5 out of 5 stars A true account from the heart. .......2005-04-28

I recommend this book to anyone working with children or needing information on autism. It is interesting and holds attention while educating the reader about autistic children. It is a positive book about discovery and hard work to over come obstacles.
Rhonda Brunette is completely honest about her experience and it is from the heart and unselfish desire that she presents this book to help other people.

5 out of 5 stars A Must Read!.......2005-04-18

From Autism to All-Star is a great book for those interested in learning more about the discovery of autsim in a very personal accounting. Brunett's story carries you through her life as a mother, captivating the reader with her 6th sense, inviting them into her entire experience. This true story is touching and brave - a must read!

Book Description

Even in places of deadly national enmity, some very ordinary people are routinely doing peace. In this highly original study, Cynthia Cockburn deepens our understanding of the processes sustaining conflict in Northern Ireland, Israel/Palestine and Bosnia/Hercegovina by means of a close involvement with three remarkable women's projects that have chosen co-operation. How, she asks, do they fill the dangerous space between them with words instead of bullets? How do they make democracy out of difference? The book brings fresh insight to theories of the self in relation to collective identities and of gender in nationalist thought and practice. Observing in words and photographs how these women's alliances create a safe space in which to work together, we learn more about the dangers of essentialism and the problematic relationship between identity and democracy.

5 out of 5 stars An insightful and inspiration account..........2001-11-01

This sensitively researched account of how everyday women in conflict affected societies work to effect positive peace, remains one of my favourite books on this topic. It presents three case studies drawing from women's experiences in Northern Ireland, Israel/Palestine and Bosinia/Hercegovina. These case studies are important because they form part of a small (but growing) body of literature that portrays women's particular views on both war and peace. Also it presents cross-cultural perspectives- Cockburn does not fall into the trap of conflating these women's experiences and views into one "feminine" experience/voice. Instead, under the theme of "women and peace", the author explores the diversity and commonality which forms these women's approaches to peace in societies that often do not include women in formal peace processes. For anyone interested in the efforts of civil society to effect peace and social justice, or anyone with an interest in women's roles in war and peace, this is an excellent book.

      Book Description

The volume gives the history of the eleven parishes that form the north-eastern part of Bramber rape, from Upper Beeding in the south to Ifield in the north, together with that of Crawley new town, founded in 1947. The area lies mostly on Wealden sands and clays, where settlement was chiefly scattered. Many settlements originated as outlying holdings of manors centred in the south end of the rape; the parish of Beeding lay in two parts, Upper Beeding astride the scarp of the South Downs, and Lower Beeding eleven miles to the north. St. Leonard's Forest in Lower Beeding was roughly divided in the Middle Ages between woodland and heath; its present appearance is the result of 19th- and 20th -century afforestation and reclamation for agriculture, and settlement was later there than elsewhere. The 19th century saw a great influx of wealthy new residents, some of whom built large houses or laid out parks or gardens like those at Sedgewick Park or Leonardslee. In the mid 20th century the villages or hamlets of Upper Beeding, Hen-field, and Mannings Heath in Nuthurst have been much expanded. Crawley, part of whose built-up area lay in Ifield parish, was already a town by the later 19th century; of other places, only Henfield was larger than the average, offering some urban functions. There is little evidence of open-field agriculture except in the south; St. Leonard's Forest was largely used as rabbit warrens in the 17th and 18th centuries; and market gardening and fruit and flower growing were prominent, for instance around Albourne, in the 20th. Industrial activities before the foundation of Crawley new town included medieval saltworking in the Adur valley, ironworking, quarrying, and fishing, together with varied woodland industries, and cement manufacture at Upper Beeding.

          Book Description

In the last thirty years, the Upper Texas Coast has become a "must go" destination for birders around the globe. This book will serve as an essential companion to the customary field guide and pair of binoculars for all visitors to Houston, High Island, Galveston, Freeport, or any of the area's other exciting birding spots. It also places the birdlife of the region, a seven-county area with a larger bird list than forty-three states, into historical and ecological contexts.

Authors Eubanks, Behrstock, and Weeks—all recognized authorities on the migrant and resident birds of this region—present a thorough introduction to the area's history, physiography, and avifauna. Then, in generous discussions of bird families and species, they synthesize years of records, tracking the comings and goings of more than 480 birds and incorporating their own lifetimes of experience to create an "ornithological mosaic" of lasting significance.

5 out of 5 stars An excellent book........2007-03-11

This is not a field guide, but rather a compilation of short pieces about the bird species of the upper Texas Coast. It includes maps, photos, and habitat information. As such, it provides a greater amount of information about this area than has been available in any one place prior to this. If you live, or bird in this area, it is excellent addition to your birding literature. I will go further and say that even for someone out of this area, who is interested in birds, it is extremely worthwhile. Although the individual species accounts are necessarily brief, they give you quality information about the birds, and their history in the area.
I strongly recommend purchasing this book.

3 out of 5 stars Birdlife of Houston...Upper Texas Coast.......2007-01-22

Great service from Amazon; good price on the book, but I was indeed disappointed in the book. While the book is very detailed and informative, there are no pictures to accompany the interesting information associated with the species' descriptions. Unfortunately, to enjoy the book, one has to have additional books to view the bird species that Birdlife of Houston... tells about... most disappointing. The book is a great idea, but falls short on being a great choice for bird lovers in the region. I would not highly recommend it.

4 out of 5 stars TX Gulf Coast birds.......2007-01-16

The book is very good for helping me identify which birds are common in my area and where they can be spotted. When I use a companion book that shows a picture of the bird and I think it might be the one I saw, I refer to this book to see if my identification was correct.

1 out of 5 stars Color Pictures Needed.......2006-12-27

Since my husband and I are semi-retired, we now have more time to travel around the Gulf Coast and have enjoyed noticing the birds in the area. We discovered that we need a book about birds that will help us to identify birds, besides the mockingbirds, cardinals, bluejays, and doves that we have seen in our back yard. So after reading a very favorable review in "The Houston Chronicle" about this birding book, I gave the book to my husband for a Christmas present. Unfortunately, I did not look at the book before I ordered it. The details about each bird are very interesting, but without pictures, we still don't know how to identify many birds that we have seen.

As one who has birded the Texas Coast since I was in my teens, I love the information, the photos and history that is covered in this book.
It is a must for serious and weekend birders of the Texas Coast.

            Book Description

Birding is booming. The hobby (or, in many cases, passion, or even addiction) has been growing steadily for years, according to studies conducted by both governmental and private organizations. An amazing number of people -- more than 70 million, by one 2001 survey of recreation preferences -- say they participate in birdwatching.
Undoubtedly, many of these people simply put feeders in their back yards and enjoy watching the hummingbirds, chickadees, and goldfinches that show up. But just as certainly, more and more birders are venturing out to discover the fun of seeing new birds in new places, whether it's a drive through a national wildlife refuge or a guided walk at a nature preserve.
Once someone has discovered the joys and challenges of birding, it doesn't take long to learn that there are places in the United States that experienced birders visit as surely as geese fly south in the fall. These spots are to birders what the Rockies are to skiers, or Pebble Beach is to golfers. Such a place is the region encompassing the Texas Gulf Coast and the lower Rio Grande Valley -- now the home of the Great Texas Coastal Birding Trail, a state-designated driving route connecting more than 300 birdwatching sites from the Louisiana state line to the Mexican border. Brown highway signs, marked with the profile of a Black Skimmer, point the way to these bird-rich destinations.
Exploring the Great Texas Coastal Birding Trail examines highlights of this popular route: locations ranging from national wildlife refuges with tens of thousands of acres to small city parks to stretches of isolated road passing through birdy habitat. In this guide, expert birder/writer Mel White profiles more than 80 of the best sites along the trail, chosen for diversity of habitat, species, and seasonality; productivity; and accessibility. Site listings give general (and often specific) directions, contact information (including websites when available), advice about when and how to bird the location, and a listing of some of the notable species that might be found. Also featured are nearby museums, nature centers, festivals, and accommodations of particular interest to the visiting birder.

                    Book Description

The moist, sultry northern coast of the Gulf of Mexico hosts a remarkably diverse bird community of more then three hundred species. Waders and seabirds, waterfowl, hummingbirds, warblers, grosbeaks, tanagers, larks, blackbirds, sparrows, and finches all thrive in the various ecosystems of the Gulf Coast and swirl in and out with the seasons. Featuring 170 color photographs by nature photographer Brian K. Miller and essays by natural history expert William R. Fontenot, Birds of the Gulf Coast depicts the mystery and majesty of these beautiful creatures and highlights the importance of the region to the bird's conservation.

Fontenot introduces the conditions peculiar to each season on the temperate Gulf Coast, and Miller's images are arranged by the calendar. The waterfowl, raptors, and seabirds of winter; the songbirds and shorebirds of spring and fall; and the wading birds of summer--their numbers peak and wane on schedule, and the chapters vividly reflect the dramatic variation in the bird population throughout the year.

Miller captures sights that thrill human eyes--the stately gaze of a bald Eagle; the splendor of an Osprey in full flight; the quiet concentration of a Sora studying his reflection in the marsh. His vibrant portraits illustrate the brilliant hues of nature: the dazzling pinks and reds of the Roseate Spoonbill, the rainbow plumage of the Painted Bunting, the bright splash of the Yellow-throated Warbler.

Together with Fontenot's edifying essays, these captivating photographs will inspire seasoned birders and novices alike to explore the region's woodlands, marshes, and beaches and discover for themselves the avian riches that await.

5 out of 5 stars Most astounding Bird Book.......2001-12-11

This is book contains the best bird photographs I have seen. The photographer has some of the most unusual shots of birds. The pictures capture the birds in there normal activities. The text was well written especially keeping the order by seasons. Great job I hope to see more books by these authors.

5 out of 5 stars Birds of the Gulf Coast.......2001-10-21

A remarkable clear and concise description of Southern coastal birds by seasons of the year. This unique classification will allow even the novice to identify and enjoy migratory birds. Fontenot and Miller's work will enable the entire community of bird watchers to share appreciation of this National treasure. Two species that come to mind are the common blue bird and the rare sand hill crane which we enjoy in the Northern Summer.

The photography is a tour de Force in the Audubon tradition and the bird and habitat description could have only been done by a seasoned birder with years of on site experience. As a bonus Birds of the Gulf Coast is a coffee table quality book. epa
