Book Description

If you are one of the 50 million Americans who suffer from pain and have searched to no avail for a smart, safe, and, most of all, effective solution, you may find relief in Dr. Norman Marcus's "Freedom from Pain". Adapted from Dr. Marcus's remarkable narcotics-free New York Pain Treatment Program at Lenox Hill Hospital, this book will teach you, in carefully graduated steps, how to surrender the attitudes that are holding you prisoner to pain and how to master the physical and mental techniques that can set you free-- techniques that have had an unprecedented success rate and will work with just about any type of chronic pain, including lower-back ailments, headaches, and arthritis.

Dr. Marcus is both supportive and sympathetic, giving even the most severe cases reason for optimism, and his book is the next best thing to a visit to the Pain Treatment Program itself.

5 out of 5 stars Puts pain in the proper perspective.......2005-08-13

I have been "suffering" chronic pain for over a year. The first thing that hit me with this easy to read book was that I have a choice to take control rather than just giving in and becoming addicted to the first thing doctors suggest -- narcotic pain medication. Because of the suggestions in this book I am working with my doctors at the pain management clinic to get off of these drugs. I am learning to change my focus immediately when I feel the pain and to integrate many forms of treatment. It is well worth the read.

I have just completed a 10 day therapeutic session with Dr. Marcus and for the first time in 27 years I am feeling like a normal person. I no longer am "a patient", which is an insidious condition in your mind that can happen suddenly, or very slowly, as it did for me. I spent the last 8 years searching constantly for any kind of relief--from acupuncture to chiropractic to physical therapy and eventually giving in to whatever meds I could get prescribed for me...nothing worked.

Today, 10 days after beginning his treatment, I have a completely new outlook on the remainder of my life. I still have some pain, but it is not overwhelming, nor is it depressing, nor keeping me from living the life I have ahead of me to its fullest. This book helps you adjust your mindset in various ways in very simple, nonsensical ways. It is easy to read, and, when you are ready, easy to follow. I can't praise him or his book any more than this. He's a top-rated doc in Manhattan for the last 3 years and there's a good reason for it. His book will help you get to him or at least his ideas, and to stay with those concepts for as long as it takes to life a full life again.

5 out of 5 stars Clear strategy given for chronic pain sufferers........1998-10-24

This book is a good read for those of us who have attempted many different methods and seen countless doctors in an effort to alleviate the suffering at the hands of chronic pain.

The main leap of faith one has to make if this book is to be at all effective is that chronic pain is muscular in nature. How we deal with this knowledge is the key to overcoming chronic pain's hold on us. This is not to say that chronic pain cannot be treated by various medical procedures. Only that if pain persists for long periods of time, a new approach may be needed.

In my own case, after five years of headaches, I finally was diagnosed with feraminal stenosis at C3-C4 and had a dissection and fusion performed. In laymen's terms, two of my nerves roots were constricted where they exited the spine in my neck. The operation basically "cleaned up" the area surrounding the nerves roots. By doing this operation from the front of the neck, a disk is sacrificed and a piece of bone implanted for fusion.

After this operation, I still struggled with very much the same pain as before, once the operative recuperation was complete. My neurosurgeon and I were quite sure that the operation had repaired the damage that had been causing my pain. My neurosurgeon was quick to note this did not necessarily mean that the pain would go away. I was told the pain may be eliminated totally, partially or not at all. Not what one wants to hear but, honest nonetheless.

I give my own history so that others with chronic pain might at least listen to my review of the book and its methods.

Whether one has had treatment of one sort or another to alleviate chronic pain or not, this book is worth a read. I would also recommend that you inform your doctor of this book.

This book attempts, I believe successfully, to have you take control of your pain and life rather than the other way around. The use of medications is not dismissed altogether although it makes a strong case on eventually eliminating painkilling medication along with tranquilizers.

I have found that while using the steps described in the book do require dedication and some effort, it is much less than the energy used by letting chronic pain rule your life.

The book concentrates on three facets of your life. The first is to slowly get the muscles throughout your body moving to the point where some pain reduction occurs which in turn can ease the transition to a life without painkillers and tranquilizers.

The second component of the book's program is where your mind is used as a tool to help reduce chronic pain. This comes in the form of relaxation exercises and using your mind to focus on ways to prevent chronic pain attacts from dominating your life.

The third component of the program is in the area of diet. In a nutshell, it asks that you eat sensibly and eliminate, at least for the short term, caffeine and alcohol from your diet.

I have taken the steps described in this book over the past six months. I can honestly say that while I still suffer from some pain, the pain no longer rules my life. The steps I take daily to combat the pain have allowed me to go back to work, although in a very different field.

In ending, I quote from page 197: "Many people go around half alive, caught in an emotional rut that they never try to analyze. But chronic pain in a strange way, has forced introspection upon you. Pain, which laid you low, can actually be an opportunity to turn your life around, if you have the courage to look at what is bothering you."

If you can find that courage, this book will guide you on a journey that could change your life.

In general it's hard to trust books that focus on a single nutritional supplement or alternative-medicine therapy; the words breakthrough or miracle in a title are almost red flags saying, "Warning! No objectivity here!" There's no objectivity in The Pain Relief Breakthrough either, but for those interested in magnet therapy--the use of magnets to relieve localized pain--it doesn't matter. This is one of those therapies that have been practiced for centuries and defy any logical or medically sound explanation for how or why they work yet manage to make an impression on many of those who try them. Long rosters of professional athletes swear by magnet therapy. Julian Whitaker acknowledges that it is nearly impossible to prove that magnets work to relieve pain; he just earnestly believes that they do. The Pain Relief Breakthrough, then, gives a road map to those who want to try it. Whitaker and coauthor Brenda Adderly explain the history of magnet therapy, the different ways to use magnets, and how to combine magnet therapy with sound exercise and nutritional principles for a total wellness program.

Book Description

A groundbreaking book about the power of magnets to control--or completely eliminate--chronic pain.

Centuries ago, healers in ancient Greece, China, India, and Egypt used magnets to treat a variety of ailments. Now, their power has been discovered by pro-athletes such as Dan Marino. The Pain Relief Breakthrough introduces magnet therapy to an even wider audience--the millions of Americans suffering from chronic pain. The benefits are many--magnets can be worn while you're active, are relatively inexpensive, and produce none of the negative side effects associated with prescription drugs.

Bestselling authors Julian Whitaker, M.D., and Brenda Adderly, M.H.A., lay out a comprehensive treatment plan that can be easily adapted to any individual's needs. With compelling medical evidence, they explain the theories of how magnets can actually interrupt the brain's pain pathways. The Pain Relief Breakthrough contains all the information you need to make an informed choice about which pain relief method is right for you, and to banish pain permanently.

5 out of 5 stars The Pain Relief Breakthrough: The Power of Magnets.......2001-01-15

Believe what you want. If you choose to use chemincals rather than your own body to heal itself, that's your choice. I like to stay away from chemicals (i.e. medication). So, this book has helped me in my search for better health.

I used to think magnetic and far infrared stuff was black magic until I read this book. I read this book because medicine did not help.

The concepts in this book are very simple. God created a planet with what we need to live healthily, magnetic engergy being one element. Then we surround ourselves with concrete and metal that blocks the natural engergies, and with electrical appliances that confuses our naturally frequencies, no wonder our health problems increase by leaps and bounds.

It's really all about energy. You eat to get energy, right? Well. OK, I do anyway. But it takes energy to digest food. So, get some instant energy so that your body can use it instantly to protect itself. The magnets have helped me so much I won't live without them now.

The book also mentions the benefits of far infrared. You will need to read "Reverse Aging" by Sang Whang to understand the benefits of that.

I wish I can find a doctor that knows when to apply magnetics, when to prescribe alkaline diet, and when to call for surgery -- combining every form of rememdy appropriately, instead of just prescribing chemicals.

These authors take the reader through a journey in time as well as history to set a foundation for the use of permanent magnets. Included are case studies, testimonials, wild assumptions, and generalities. This reader felt like he was being conned by a very poor salesman. Some of the information may have been correct in it's original context. However, the authors chose to present only part of the information in a general format and discount other research which may have contrary information. This is a scary book, it has been a major seller and propaganda machine for companies and individuals to promote sales of magnetic products at the risk of the individual. This book has provided two sets of information for this reader. First is that medical degrees and bibliographical citations do not always make a credible book. Second, is this book provides a list of possible references with actual research information. I do not feel that all of the information contained in this book is wrong, just misleading, incomplete and distorted. A more complete analysis with both indications and contraindications for use can be found in "Magnetism and its effects on the living system". by Davis and Rawls.

5 out of 5 stars By far the most informative book on Magnet Therapy!.......1998-07-10

Although we still don't know exactly how magnets work on the human body, we do know that 1) they do work, and 2) they can't hurt. This book does an absolutely fabulous job of enlightening chronic pain sufferers of an alternative, non-invasive, completely safe, effective method of relieving pain. Tell anyone who suffers from discomfort to read this book

5 out of 5 stars Best book I've read on the subject........1998-07-04

Our family and friends have been using products described in this book for almost seven years. There is absolutely no doubt this age-old technology works! I like the simple straight forward approach the author used in explaining the history, applications, and theories on how these products work. We all use products every day, ie fax machines, cellular phones etc. that we don't understand exactly how they work....but they safely get the results we are looking for, and that's what counts. A very enlightening, informative book for anyone desiring a simple, safe, effective, and economical way to deal with some of the discomforts of life.

        Book Description

Through her extensive experience with pain clinics, author Phyllis Berger — a chronic pain sufferer herself — realized that pain relief was highly dependent on stress factors. She found relief could be more rapidly achieved by blocking pain with electrical currents and acupuncture, relieving anxiety and releasing emotions, and increasing pain-free movements with exercises, especially enjoyable exercises that build strength and endurance. Focusing on the brain and its complex chemical interactions and electrical circuitry, The Journey to Pain Relief provides solid information, advice, and treatment suggestions to empower both the chronic pain sufferer and the pain therapist. The author authoritatively describes ways to combine a wide range of treatments that tap into the body's inherent knowledge and ability to heal, increase exercise ability, stimulate the production of helpful chemical substances in the body, and encourage the positive attitudes that will bring many more patients to that often elusive destination of pain relief and control.

"The Journey to Pain Relief," by Phyllis Berger, is broken down into 12 chapters. The Appendix at the end covers Acupuncture Techniques for Specific Conditions, Treatment with TENS and Treatment with MDC.

"The Journey to Pain Relief" begins by defining the difference between acute and chronic pain. Acute pain "serves as a warning that an injury has taken place." Chronic pain is pain that never seems to go away. "The key to preventing chronic pain is to treat acute pain immediately." Chronic pain can have serious penalties for both the body and the mind. Pain affects us emotionally as well as physically. Pain can cause us to limit our movements in a particular area and it may create emotional stress. The higher our level of pain the more fear helplessness and anxiety we may feel. These emotions lead to sleep problems and depression.

"You have the right to seek relief from pain." You should talk to your doctor about your pain and he or she should listen. A patient needs to be proactive. Try to gather as much information as possible.

Find a way to laugh. Laughter seems to lower blood pressure, reduces stress, and strengthens the immune system. "Patients with chronic pain should seek out situations and activities that bring joy, happiness, and laughter into their lives in order to strengthen their system, uplift their spirits, and reduce the depression, anxiety and fear associated with pain."

Phyllis Berger brings hope to those who suffer chronic pain. I wish I had read this book before having four back surgeries. "The Journey to Pain Relief" is written in simple terms making it easy to read and understand. Ms. Berger promotes patient education. I found "The Journey to Pain Relief" to be very informative and helpful. Ms. Berger's credentials and personal experience lends credence to the information found in this book. I highly recommend this book to all that suffer chronic pain.

                Book Description

The American Civil War was predominantly an infantryman's war. Artillery had improved substantially since 1815 and guns could inflict murderous losses if they had a clear field of fire. But most Civil War battlefields were characterised by sprawling forests and broken ground. Cavalry were important for reconnaissance, raiding and rearguard actions but there was little scope for sabre charges in the grand old manner when infantrymen armed with muzzle-loading rifles could face such tactics with confidence. Ultimately, the Confederacy's survival as a nation would largely depend on the fighting ability of its 642 infantry regiments.

Osprey continues to provide some outstanding overview reference books on historic fighting men and battles, and this is probably the twenty-fifth or twenty-sixth book I've purchased from them! Color renderings and well researched details make these books indispensible for historians, toy soldier collectors, hobbyists, and anyone else with an interest in the Civil War (or WW II, or whatever period interests you!) Fast read, excellent photos, color graphic renderings - what else could you want?

                Book Description

"I cannot say when I have had so much enthusiasm for a book. Having known and read the works of several very considerable men of letters, I can honestly say that I have never seen a collection of essays as good as this."-Robert H. Ferrell

Gathered together here for the first time, these essays present an intellectual conservative's perspective on an era which, because it underscores so many of the political divisions still with us today, continues to hold our fascination. Davidson deals with the marvelous but confused realm of post-1945 international politics, in which the American people faced a new enemy, one often baffling and terrifying.

Editor of the quarterly journal "Modern Age" in the 1960s, former President of the Foundation for Foreign Affairs, and now President Emeritus of the Conference on European Problems, Eugene Davidson was and remains uniquely qualified to write on the international political issues of the 60s. Highly recommended reading for students of American history, political science, and international studies, 36 essays compiled in Reflections On A Disruptive Decade span from Mr Dallin among the Scholars (1960) to Castles in Spain and Other Countries (1969) and collective comprise a complete spectrum of observations and commentaries on the political, cultural, social and international issues, events and personalities of the times.

This was just too cute to pass up, and it is a good, entertaining overview of some of the aspects of space travel and what would be involved in a tourist trip to the moon. However, there are some appalling factual errors in here. In particular, he seems to have a grudge against the space shuttle and comes out with some blatant untruths about it: not all of the shuttle's heat-resistant tiles need to be replaced after a mission, only a few do; and the shuttle does in fact have a braking parachute though he says it doesn't. He also indicates that total solar eclipses only happen about once every 150 years when the actual figure is about 1.5 years, a factor of 100 error.

If you can take it with a grain of salt, though, the text and cartoons (by the author) are entertaining, and it's well illustrated with space photos, though unfortunately the geared-for-portability size of the book (4.5"x7.5") scarcely does them justice. So read it for fun and a little bit of education but don't believe all of it.
