I am a successful cartoonist who, on occasion, has to deal with four rambunctious children. While I believe most families are a little dysfunctional, ours sometimes becomes a regular circus! In the past, I would get so angry that I ended up having long visits with Mr. James Beam, (if you know what I mean); but now I never drink out of anger...only pleasure!
This book has not only changed my life, but also my wife's. Her way of dealing with our melon-headed kids in the past was to compulsively clean. Now she and I can both relax in knowing our kids are in good hands with Uncle Roy.
This book has shown me that you don't have to raise your children with an iron fist, but with hands of wood, me lad. And you won't have to worry about taking your kids to the shed, because they will already be on top of it.

As a young mother of four (two of whom are in the throws of the terrible Twos) I really needed this book. My kids are like most, I guess, brimming over with energy that sometimes gets misplaced. Sometimes they throw a lone fit when they don't get what they want, for instance when our girl wants "ice fweam" for dinner instead of the dreaded "p'sghetti." Or when our penultimate son wants to "renegotiate the contract" with us (so to speak) and demamnds top billing at the attention theater. Or, as the author experienced with her little boy's first tantrum on the Fire Island ferry (we love the place, btw!), our oldest pitched his first hissy fit on the ferry (well, taxi-boat really) that plies the Manitowish Waters in N. Wisconsin, the "Captain Roy." I, too, thought the crew or the mate (a mighty saling man) would toss us into the drink! And our youngest? Frankly, sometimes he can be a pampered jerk!
This is not to say we don't love the kids, we love them to death! But how do you deal practically with tantrums which, we know, can happen to any child? This book is a real help in that department. It's full of sage advice on how to calm the frenzy down and take control of your home life.
We invented a little game in our house inspired by one of the exercises mentioned in the book, we call it "Green Light/Yellow Light/Red Light." It involves ranking our behavior and the kids just love it. Another thing we tried (but is not in the book although the book gave my husband the idea) is "Self-Discipline Calling" in which when the child is having a hissy my husband calls out "Oing! Oing! Who's At The Door?" and the frenzied child has to respond "Self-discipline calling, come right in!" This gives them the little extra control they need to rein in their wild emotions. I have this book before me as I write this, and I'm glad to say that for the most part the tantrums are behind us!

I have two toddlers one year apart and needed lots of advise about tantrums in public places. My mother gave me this book and I will forever be thankful. Chapter 3 "Everybody's Favorite: Tantrums in the Supermarket and the Restaurant" has wonderful ideas and advise that actually work.
I gave this book to a co-worker who was taking her 1 1/2 year old on a long car trip. She followed many of the suggestions in Chapter 4 "Planes, Trians, and Automobiles". She said the trip was still an experience, but the information in the book was extremely useful.
As my kids get older, I refer back to the book more solutions.
First Aid for Tantrums is a wonderful resource and will be in my personal library, well worn, for many years.

With the aid of fifty-four illustrations, John S. Haller traces the histories of both meanings of the word from the Napoleonic era through the Great War and its aftermath. He concentrates on the development of British and American evacuation procedures and technology with a focus on hand conveyances and wheeled vehicles. His intent is not to cover all aspects of medical evacuation but to accurately recount the common medical evacuation problems, incongruities, and controversies that existed for warring nations.

I think this book is very useful even just from the perspective of finding something interesting to do when you get bored. Not mention it indeed provides a lot of relevant information about how to answer the interview quesionts.

This is a decent book. I only looked at a couple of chapters on analytical and statistics problems. Some of the problems marked "hard" were quite interesting and challenging. Quite a few of the problems were trivial and repetitive though. The solutions are generally well written, though sometimes a bit too verbose (for my taste).
Overall, not a bad investment if you are preparing for job interviews which may expect you to crack a few puzzles.

This is a great book preparing for an interview, with lots of logic puzzles, stat. and derivatives questions, solid interview advice and some funny stories. The logic questions range from fairly straightforward and simple to more advanced, and I think most people will at least find a couple of them challenging.

I used this book to prepare for some Wall Street interviews, and I found the questions on Black-Scholes pretty useful to orient my study of Mathematical Finance (my background is in Theoretical Physics, so I used this book to get an idea of the kind of things I would have to learn to work as a Quant). The puzzles and brain teasers in the book were quite straightforward, but I guess one cannot ask too difficult a question in an interview, so they may be in keeping with the kind of questions one typically gets asked.

When I first became interested in falconry, I, like most people, wanted to learn everything I could on the subject. This book covers several aspects of falconry, such as the history and the raptors used in it, and moves on to many personal stories. This is NOT a "how-to" book. Bodio has delivered a wonderfully entertaining and quite creatively written book that I highly recommend to any aspiring or long-time falconer. You won't be disappointed!

Stephen Bodio is one of my favorite writers--definitely my favorite nature writer--and this books captures the essence of the ancient sport of falconry. This is not a manual; it's an essay that helps to explain why anyone would go through so much effort just to share in the privilege of hunting in partnership with a wild animal. (No other modern sport allows one to do this.)This is a book that can be read and enjoyed by anyone, falconer or not, but the falconer will appreciate some of the insights Bodio has--for instance, when he describes the infamous goshawk. I recommend this to anyone who wants to learn what falconry is, or who is seriously considering taking up hawks. It is fun, it is informative, and it will stay with you for a long time.

Mr. Bodio has written an outstanding overview of modern falconry. He manages to convey what it is about falconry that makes falconers put up with the heartache of hunting with raptors. As a bonus, Mr. Bodio's writing is a joy to read. It is both funny and informative. This is definitely *not* a how-to book, but instead gives a good overview of what falconry is like, and what a prospective falconer can expect.

This is a great little book. Frank Beebe packs all the essential information around hawk training into this book, drawing on decades of practical experience and research. Beebe writes with the authority of someone who has actually practised what he is preaching, rather than some authors who seem to have written a falconry book for the sake of personal aggrandizement. He also writes in excellent English, almost with an academic eloquence.
He deals with all three classes of falconry birds: buteos, accipiters and falcons, and draws very useful comparisons between them on temperament, character and hunting application.
Note however that the book is mostly a training manual, and with the exception of a very interesting chapter on the history of falconry regulation in the US, it about trapping, furniture and hunting. If you want a book with detail on hawk care, dog training, breeding and housing then choose another one (I recommend Emma Ford's for all except breeding and dogs, Nick Fox's for the former and Diana Durman-Walters' for the latter). Note also that its a North American text - the chapters on trapping and bagged quarry are of no use to a UK falconer.

This is an excellent book for people who are intrested in falconry. At one time falconry was the sport of the noble gentry. This book does a real service in describing these intelligent, beautiful birds of prey and how falconers work with them.

A great beginners book........2004-12-12
I am relatively new to the world of falconry. As a result, I am reading just about everything I get my hands on. Frank Beebe is an undisputed master on the subject of falconry. I found that Mr. Beebe's style of writing, presents the information in a very easy to read & understand format. After having read this book, it convinced me that I should order his major work entitled "A Compleat Falconer". I am certain that it is most probably "The Bible" for falconry. An excellent book by an excellent author.

This book has very good information for beginners who are a little confused. A very good profiling on individual species. Also good section on equipment. I found it very informative and worthwhile the price.
Excellent Overview.......2002-02-12
I found this book to be an excellent overview of Falcony. It has a good section describing the different types of raptors suitable for the sport, and some interesting descriptions and drawings relating to training and equipment. However, I would not attempt to use this book as a "how-to" manual. It doesn't have nearly enough detail on any subject. In places it can be a little difficult to follow. I am pleased with my copy and will be happy to add it to my library.

Something is missing from American falconry, something old.
As you hunt the doomed woodlot behind Wal-Mart, imagine this: You're on a horse, on a windy crest of high pasture bordered by a stone wall two thousand years old. Your great grandfather was born three miles from this spot in a farmhouse that still bears his name. Tiny white flecks of sheep graze in the valley below. Above them, a mixed flock of jackdaws and crows forms a tight whirling spiral evading the efforts of a young falcon, moments ago released from your glove.
In Northumberland, the far border of England and Scotland, this could be any day in the last eight hundred years. It could be yesterday. For all our modern improvements and vast open spaces, American falconry has nothing like it.
For Virginia writer Lee Chichester, the lure to see and take part in such ancient sport was irresistible. In the Spring of 1995, she saw a notice in the Hawk Chalk calling "junior falconers" to intern at the National Avian Research Center, a falcon breeding operation run by Dr. Nick Fox in Carmarthen, United Kingdom. Applicants would assist in all facets of falcon rearing and training. The latter half of this five-month engagement would be spent hawking crows in the rolling border country far to the north. Chichester had at that time flown three passage red-tails, mostly at squirrels and mostly alone, so counted herself a junior falconer and applied.

Being in the novice category, I applaud Chichester's ability to capture my attention and hold my interest. I found the story-like quality quite appealing and informative facts offered in managable doses. The characters have charm and create connections that leave the reader wanting more. I would imagine more experienced falconers could find common story themes in Chicester's work. A good read aloud for the younger set when offered in segments. Where is the next adventure?

From the author: We report on nocturnal hunting by Peregrine Falcons (Falco peregrinus) at the Empire State Building in Manhattan, New York City. From 4 August through 13 November 2004, we saw Peregrine Falcons on 41 of 77 nights of observation. During this period, they hunted migrating birds on 25 evenings, with the first hunting attempt occurring an average of 119 min after sunset. Peregrine Falcons made 111 hunting attempts and captured 37 birds (33% success). Hunting success was highest in September, but was most often observed in October. Peregrines hunted migratory birds at night more frequently in autumn than in spring. Peregrines were significantly more likely to be present on autumn nights when >50 migrants were passing by the Empire State Building. Although the lights associated with skyscrapers are believed to disorient migrating birds and result in many bird-to-skyscraper collisions each year, Peregrine Falcons are able to take advantage of the situation. Skyscrapers provide hunting perches at altitudes often flown by nocturnal migrants, and disorientation caused by the lights sometimes results in birds circling skyscrapers and possibly becoming more vulnerable to predation by falcons.
