Good, directed ACLS review.......2005-08-14
This book is an excellent introduction and refresher for Advanced Cardiac Life Support guidelines. Not only that, it also gives many helpful descriptions and illustrations for techniques used in the care of a broad range of patients. For example, it gives an exhaustive review of IV placement, including the pros and cons of different locations. It reviews specifics of airway management and illustrates different devices available (eg, ET tube, laryngeal mask airway, bag mask valve device). It thoroughly reviews ACLS drugs and cardiac drugs in a high-yield manner. While its intended audience is RNs (for example, mixing instructions for drugs are plentiful), as an MD I found it quite handy, and ACLS students of any stripe should find it useful.
There are a few weaknesses. While the end-of-chapter question banks are good preparation for the ACLS exam, many questions have equivocal stems or answers. Therefore they could use more rigourous review for accuracy and clarity. Also, the text and charts occasionally have misspellings which detracts from the otherwise professional appearance and tone of the book.
I read Mastering ACLS in a matter of four hours, skipping the more mundane or already known sections. I am happy to say that I did well during the ACLS course I took the next day. My retention of critical material was unquestionably reinforced by this fine review. I am sure its teaching points will improve the care of patients as well.

This is a good introductory text to paediatric emergency medicine. It has a very practical approach to assessing problems.The book does not cover paediatric basic or advanced life support.However, it has good coverage of other paediatric presentations.

This booklet was great. I taught a small refresher course in CPR/PR and used it. The information is presented in a very easy to understand format and the review questions at the end of the chapters are wonderful.

I belong to Company 15, New Market Firefighters. This book is used in training for all of our members. I am an EMT in training and this book is very handy for myself and anyone interested in the well being of people around them.

Well-organized, well-illustrated guide to life-saving.......2006-01-19
This is the book used by The American Heart Association to teach CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation), First Aid, and the use of an AED (automated electronic defibrilator). I went through the course today and, even though it was a refresher course (my fifth or sixth time through), this book still helped it be interesting. The book is very organized, very informative, very detailed, and well-illustrated. My only mild complaint is that the book might be overly illustrated. There are times when you are reading on a certain page, and it will say "See Figure X", and Figure X is not only not on that page, but the plethora of figures, diagrams, and graphs have pushed it two pages on, necessitating flipping around the pages to find relevant graphics. However, as some people learn best through illustrations, this cannot be a big complaint. Overall, an excellent guide.
