    Book Description

The harrowing history of the Nazi attempt to annihilate the Jews of Europe during the Second World War is illustrated in this series of 320 highly detailed maps. This atlas traces each phase of the Holocaust, beginning with the anti-Semitic violence of prewar Germany and leading to the German conquest of countries in which the Jews had lived for centuries. Presented in chronological order, the maps document in compelling detail the story of the Holocaust, from the spread of the early random killings of Jews and their systematic mass expulsion from thousands of towns and villages to the establishment of ghettos and the setting up of the death camps. Also shown on the maps are more than two hundred acts of resistance and revolt, as well as areas of Jewish partisan activity and other avenues of escape and rescue.

5 out of 5 stars Tracing the horros of the Shoah.......2007-07-12

In this volume, Martin Gilbert, who is possibly the most prolific historian on the history of the Holocaust, traces the geographical history of the Holocaust using maps accompanied by detailed commentary to illustrate the scope and horror that took place between 1941 and 1945. Also included in this volume is a detailed account of antisemitic violence that was rife in Europe in the early 20th Century.

Gilbert painstakingly covers each region of Europe and North Africa, where Jews were targeted, interred and murdered. Gilbert gives an account of the systematic attempts to exterminate the Jews: the random killing and anti-Jewish pogroms, the forcing of Jews into ghettos, the deliberate starvation of these Jews, deportations and death camps, slave labor and mass killings.

Gilbert also enumerates the countries where many Jews fled to escape Nazi persecution. Between 1933 and 1938, 500 000 German Jews emigrated or fled abroad, including more than 33 000 to Palestine, where they joined tens of thousands of recent Jewish immigrants from Poland. After the war, 200 000 survivors of the camps immigrated to Palestine, hence, Holocaust survivors and their descendants make up a substantial part of Israel's population today.

Gilbert record the names, ages and places of birth of some specific Holocaust victims whose cases he examines. He also details lesser-known locations of the Nazi persecution such as Morocco, Libya and Tunisia which were under Nazi occupation. Every period is intensely covered, as is every geographic region where Jews suffered and died.

The atlas is supplemented with photographs, some of which are very graphic. Two important maps are placed at the end of the book estimating how many Jews from each country were murdered during the Holocaust, and how many Jews returned to their countries of birth after the war.

Through his use of maps to illustrate the destruction of European Jewry and eyewitness accounts of the Nazi atrocities, Gilbert succeeds as always in combining the recording of the larger events, with a ground eye view.

5 out of 5 stars More knowledge about History's greatest Evil.......2005-05-04

One of the way the human mind learns is through ordering complex realities into diagrams and pictures and illustrations and maps. These somehow give us a sense of really comprehending what we understand only vaguely.
So these maps which tell the story of the Holocaust , from the time of initial German violence against the Jews through the time of the destruction itself, and then for the remainder, the aftermath.
In collecting this material Martin Gilbert one of the great modern historians , and one of the major historians of the Holocaust provides the reader with still more information, more means for knowing about, if not completely understanding, what is arguably the greatest act of collective Evil in human history.

5 out of 5 stars Very thorough facts and figures.......2004-11-26

This detailed account of horrendous facts will bring tears to the eyes of the hardest ones.
Each of the numbers reported concerns human persons with their wives, family, parents, children. Behind each figure there is a drama. It is not a book about the holocaust, it's just figures and maps. There is no human aspect in these inhuman statistics.
Ever since the Greek classic period, the ones reporting a defeat are no longer killed. Martin Gilbert is supplying a very detailed, thorough and actualized report on one of the greatest defeat of humanity. He should be praised for that.
His book doesn't cover the documents which permitted the holocaust or the proofs substantiating what is not to be proven. It simply attempts at tracing each and every deportation by the nazi (no capital N, please, they have lost such a right). This is an essential working tool for historians, if they can avoid loosing the human faces behind the figures.
I still rather work with Raul Hilberg, Richard Breitman, Walter Laqueur, Randolph Braham, Yitshak Arad, Gerald Reitlinger, Lucy Dawidowicz, Saul Friedlander, Yeshuda Bauer, John Mendelsohn, Henry Friedlander & Sybil Milton, and many other with the same approach but Martin Gilbert book is always next to each of them, it maintains a synthetic global view and it is a reference as well.
If you have an interest in the nazi mass murders, you simply cannot afford not to have Gilbert's atlas. By the way why don't we have a similar Atlas on the goulag as yet? This lack shows how Gilbert's book filled a hisorical need.
Don't be satisfied with Martin Gilbert's Atlas, but don't do without it.
People dying in the camps were begging for us to tell: Jewish or not Jewish, let's keep on telling.

    Book Description

Atlas of the Holocaust, the product of seven years' research, is a comprehensive record of the Nazi attempt to annihilate the Jews of Europe during World War II.

World-renowned historian Martin Gilbert has drawn each of the 316 maps especially for this atlas. All are fully annotated and are based on documentary evidence from a wide range of sources.

The atlas traces each phase of the Holocaust, beginning with the anti-Semitic violence of prewar Germany and leading to the German conquest of countries in which the Jews had lived for centuries. Presented in chronological order, the maps document in compelling detail, month by month and week by week, the story of the Holocaust, from the spread of the early random killings of Jews and their systematic mass expulsion from thousands of towns and villages to the establishment of ghettos and the setting up of the death camps. The atlas ends with the death marches and executions in the final days of the Allied liberation. Also shown on the maps are more than two hundred acts of resistance and revolt, as well as areas of Jewish partisan activity and other avenues of escape and rescue. Many maps tell the stories of hundreds of children deported to their deaths. Others bear witness to individuals active in revolt and tell moving sagas of their courage and defiance.

5 out of 5 stars Tracing the murder of 6 million through maps.......2007-06-01

Martin Gilbert is possibly the most prolific historian on the history of the holocaust.
In this volume gilbert has compiled 316 maps, together with a commentary t o illustrate the scope of the horror that took place between 1941 and 1945.
He begins by tracing the history of anti-Semitic violence in Europe, with maps and history of anti-Jewish violence before the First World War, and anti-Jewish violence in Europe between 1918 and 1932.
One fascinating map details the two thousand year history of Jewish life in Europe by 1933, explaining how long Jews had lived in each country in Europe covered.
Gilbert painstakingly covers each region of Europe and North Africa, where Jews were targeted, interend and murdered. He details the greater massacres and the lesser known killings.
He also outlines the countries to which German Jewish refugees were recieved.
From Germany between 1933 and 1938, 500 000 Jews emigrated or fled abroad, including more than 33 000 to the then 'Palestine', where they joined tens of thousands of recent Jewish immigrants from Poland.
After the war, 200 000 survivors of the camps emigrated to "Palestine".
Hence descendants of refugees from Nazism and holocaust survivors make up a substantial part of Israel's population today.
Gilbert does not spare the horror when he describes the random killing and anti-Jewish pogroms, the anti-Jewish measures taken in different countries, the forcing of Jews into ghettos, the deliberate starvation of Jews in these ghettos, the deportations and death camps, the slave labout systems and the mass killings.

This is a very comprehensive digest, and although there were so many whose names have not been recorded, Gilbert does record the names, ages and places of birth of some holocaust victims whose cases he examines.
He also details lesser known locations of the Nazi persecution, such as the fate of Jews in Morocco, LIbya and Tunisia under Nazi/Axis occupation during this period.
Ever period is intensely covered, as is every geographic region where Jews suffered and died.
Several maps detail the cases of some of the children deported to from various places in Europe, and from various countries, such as maps showing the names, ages and places from which several children were deported from France.
We wonder about the lives and cruel deaths of the precious children whose ages and names we see, but whom we know little else about.
The atlas is supplemented about 40 , sometimes very graphic photographs, and two important maps are placed at the end of the book estimated how many Jews from each country were murdered during the holocaust, and how many Jews returned to their countries of birth after the war.
Always keeping the human touch and concern for each individual victim and survivor, Gilbert provides the stories of three of several children who survived and were taken to the children's home at Ulm: Idel Levitan, Renja Fraum and Zlata Tauber-with their photographs.
Gilbert succeeds as always with combining the recording of the larger events, with a ground eye view.

    5 out of 5 stars Very informative.......1997-09-29

To read this book is a mitzvah. I showed this book to a survivor whos village no longer exists. She started to cry when her village was mentioned and she said "someone does remember us". This was very touching and I think that all survivors should know that there are many who still remember. The thing that I felt that was lacking, is that there was very little detail of when of Jews of Italy and Greece were deported to the camps.

Taking a break from his phenomenally successful Alex Cross series, James Patterson's When the Wind Blows is as much child's fantasy as it is an adult nightmare. The novel moves away from the gritty Washington, D.C., setting of the Cross books and follows the daily life of Frannie O'Neill, a Colorado veterinarian. After the mysterious death of her husband several years before, Frannie retreated to an isolated life in her Colorado practice. But a series of bizarre events suddenly disrupts her lonely routine. On a personal level, she is shaken by her new tenant--Kit Harrison. Kit's too handsome and too friendly and he's a hunter (or so Frannie thinks). He's also recovering from a devastating personal tragedy, and, as Frannie eventually learns, he's really an FBI agent using his vacation to follow a crucial lead. But Kit isn't the one that's got Frannie concerned. As she says after stopping her Suburban one night to check out something on the side of the road: "What I saw was way beyond my abilities to imagine, beyond my comprehension, my system of belief, and maybe beyond my ability to communicate right now. The little girl's arms were folded back in a peculiar way, but when she lifted them--feathers fanned out." The girl is Max, and the mystery of her wings leads Frannie and Kit into a massive conspiracy involving secret genetic research and the scientific manipulation of the human species.

Patterson, a former advertising executive who coined such catchy phrases as "Nupe it!," knows how to entertain. His chapters are always short (some only two pages), and his writing is clear and unobtrusive; the reading experience is brisk--akin to watching a summer blockbuster. The book is not as dark or as weighty as the tales of detective-psychologist Alex Cross, but while some fans may be disappointed by Patterson's migration from pure suspense fiction, his first-person narrator Frannie, has a quirky realism that keeps this flight of fancy mostly on stable ground. --Patrick O'Kelley

                      Amazon.com Audiobook Review

When the Wind Blows has one of those outrageous premises that you either buy into (a girl with wings?), or you don't. Fortunately, Blair Brown's narration helps you suspend disbelief. Brown, the multi-Emmy-nominated star of the classic TV series The Days and Nights of Molly Dodd, reads the story with more authority than the plot seems to merit. But as urgent and forceful as she is with the central narration, she's even better when reading the first-person passages in the voice of Frannie O'Neill, the widowed veterinarian at the center of this James Patterson thriller. That's when she gives the story real heart, a desperately needed humanity in the midst of all the cloning and genetic tinkering. (Running time: six hours, four cassettes) --Lou Schuler

                      4 out of 5 stars Light read.......2007-09-29

This particular tome in the James Patterson library is a quick sci-fi romp through the mountains of Colorado. It was enjoyable, even if its premise is silly. I thought the characters were what sold this one rather than all of the crazy stuff going on around them. I almost think I liked Maximum Ride more.

5 out of 5 stars One of Patterson's best books yet on a different level!.......2007-09-21

I loved this book! It was great! I fell in love with the characters. Didn't want it to end. I couldn't wait for the sequel. A must read for someone with an imagination.

3 out of 5 stars Good vs. Evil.......2007-09-17

I love good vs. evil stories except for one thing, they are always predictable. It's not that I want to see the bad guys win, I just wish someone would be creative enough to find a new way to get there. Patterson is a great writer, can hold your interest and make bizarre things seem believable, but the plot, as good as it gets, just doesnt' have a lot to it. I still would recommend it as a good read!

3 out of 5 stars Come on James!?.......2007-07-20

James Patterson writes well and you can just visualize everything - the marks of a great author. But why this book didn't get the 4 stars I would have given it based on story and writing follows - SPOILERS ahead, stop reading if you don't want to know. So, the big reveal is special science breeding super human children. This would be fine if it was super athletic ability to compete in olympics or something. However, the children are bred with....wait for it...wings. Yes, bird wings so they can fly. Are we supposed to honestly believe that wings large enough to enable flight can be tucked back and hidden so that nobody sees them? That is why this is secret, nobody knows the children have giant wings! Come on - all the author had to do was make the research for super muscle strength and it would have been believable.

                      4 out of 5 stars Wow!.......2007-06-21

At first, I thought Patterson had finally lost it and decided to try his hand at science fiction (which I find very boring at best). However, as I read further, this realistic-fictional story became a page turner rather quickly. The questions this story raised in my mind about the manipulation of human DNA to serve an evil purpose, not only made my skin crawl but forced me to bring this possibility to a conscious level for which I'd rather not. This story made me think while it kept me on the edge of my seat.

Recipient of the Grand Prix of the Académie Française, Wind, Sand and Stars captures the grandeur, danger, and isolation of flight. Its exciting account of air adventure, combined with lyrical prose and the spirit of a philosopher, makes it one of the most popular works ever written about flying. Translated by Lewis Galantière.

Some authors will serve a decent story and nourish a reader's sensibilities adequately enough that the reader feels satisfied to have read it. But Saint-Exupery, in "Wind, Sand and Stars," lovingly prepares and serves a sumptuous banquet in his story that not only leaves us readers feeling very well nourished, but also immerses us in the sensual pleasure of tasting and savoring the dishes he sets before us.

If your literary taste runs to the gourmet, read this book.

Only on a few occasions in a lifetime is one given the chance to read a novel that so captures the lightness of the human spirit and the joy of living as in Antoine de Saint-Exup?ry's Wind, Sand, and Stars. With elegant, nearly poetic writing, he presents a small collection of stories from a lifetime of philosophy and adventure. Saint-Exup?ry was a French pilot who flew for the postal service A?ropostale in the 1920s, a time period when aviation was still a revolutionary and dangerous activity. Any fears he had were shadowed by his absolute love of flying and passion for soaring high above the earth, away from the material desires and violence of society. This endearing relationship between Saint-Exup?ry and his aircraft shows one of the many ways, as Wind, Sand, and Stars documents, that he finds happiness in his everyday life.

Have you ever seen an elephant fly? Well, on a particularly windy day, the elephant herd is holed up in a cave, not wanting to go out, along with a few birds. But Wilbur and Elmer assure them that elephants cannot be blown over so out they go. Since the pair love pratical jokes, they get inside another cave, out of the sight of the herd and Wilbur does his ventriloquism, making the herd think that they're in trouble and about to fly off. So, the herd tie themselves together, tail to tail, and go out to find them. They realize it was another joke and go backwards to get back into the cave. If that wasn't funny enough, Elmer insists that elephants cannot be blown over and goes out by himself again. However, this time, his cries for help are somewhat ignored by the herd until they see him flying overhead! A beautiful patchwork elephant goes flying throughout the jungle, his ears a wonderful way of transportation. It's just a wonderfully funny book and these Elmer books are just awesome. They're all pretty funny and teach good lessons too. David McKee has a wonderful sense of that British humor and these books are just loved in our house. I highly recommend these as a writer myself.

If you are a pilot, this certainly is a must read book. Captain Charles "Chick" Williams has unfolded the story of his flying experiences in both an exciting and humorous way. The early years tell of his youth as an "Army Brat" and then on with his own military life, airline experiences and finally retirement. I had the opportunity to meet Chick earlier this year and found his story telling abilities in person equal to his ability to reduce them to writing. I highly recommend this book.

5 out of 5 stars Reminds me of a Mark Twain snapshot of an American family.......2006-04-25

The book is a delightful snapshot of an American family and their travels and travails, as told by pilot and patriot Chick Williams. In the style of Mark Twain, we see and feel what it was like to grow up in small towns, and travel about the world. We are exposed to the behind the scenes antics, and drama, as the jet age comes to full maturity and becomes a part of our lives. As told through the eyes of a commercial airline and Air Force pilot.

Winds Aloft is a great read for everyone. What a wonderful way to bring to light the dreams of a young man who knew flying was to be his life long career. Some stories are short and others are longer but they all bring the reader into the cockpit of several types of airframes and put us into one of the seats. Well Done Chuck Williams!

Charles Williams gives readers a great look at the experiences of both military and commercial airline pilots. The stories he tells provides a look behind usually closed doors. As a frequent flyer, I am always interested in his insights and stories about commercial aviation. He tells them well here and this book should be a fine reading experience for both pilots and passengers.

                              Book Description

Grant Innes, a painter, and his dog Happy decide to visit their friend Mazie, who lives in a small village beside the sea. After a long journey, the old blue bus bumps to a stop. Mazie meets her friends and takes them back to her seaside home. Grant cannot believe Mazie's yard, full of brightly colored wooden birds and animals stuck on posts and nailed to the house. Mazie explains that these are whirligigs and she has made them herself. When the wind blows in from the sea, all the hinged paws and wings flap and spin. The wind brings magic too!

The vibrant and bold colors of Grant Innes' artwork form the heart of this picture book. Each painting conveys an infectious cheerfulness that is sure to appeal to children and parents alike.
