Wish I'd gotten the updated version.......2007-08-07
As much as I wanted to like this diet, it just did not work for me. She recommended eating 2400 calories for my body type/weight and I knew that would never help me lose weight. The biggest thing this book helped with was knowing that it's really important for me to make the most of every calorie while breastfeeding, for my OWN health. Diet info is changing constantly, and I felt like Behan recommended way too many starches and way too little protein, especially for a mom who's getting back into strength training. I don't know what her 2007 version of this book suggests, but I'm sure it's more updated in this regard. I've read over and over on the internet that a breastfeeding mother should eat at least 1800 calories, so I've been sticking with around 1800-1950 using some of Behan's suggestions (and also using Bob Green's Best Life Diet), and have immediately seen weight loss and have no problems with milk supply.
Buy the updated version!.......2007-05-09
Please note how old this edition is (1992!) and choose the updated edition Eat Well, Lose Weight, While Breastfeeding: The Complete Nutrition Book for Nursing Mothers. We've learned a lot about diet, nutrients, and bfing in the last 14+ years!
Well Written!.......2007-01-10
I really enjoyed this book. I found that it was really easy to read and it didn't take long to read the entire book. I really didn't want to "diet" while breastfeeding but was wanting information on how I should eat while breastfeeding. I found that when I started eating better by following the book's suggestions and began excercising regularly, I started losing half a pound a week. I am now proud to say that I weigh less than I did before I got pregnant and am still nursing my 7 month old daughter.
Are you kidding me...???.......2006-10-04
This book was such a disappointment to me! The majority of her information is completely inaccurate. I would have expected a little more coming from a dietician. The only thing I can say about this book on a positive note, is a few of the recipes are okay and she supports breastfeeding. I felt like this book was/is right with our culture...focused on how mom looks after having a baby. New mom's have enough on their plate worrying about how to adjust to this little person who's taken over their life. They don't need another book emphasizing how their body should look or perform. Every mom is different, I know. I just think mothers should be focused on breastfeeding successfully and loving their sweet baby, not trying to fit into prepregnancy pants 2 weeks postpartum. A lot has changed in 14 years and new mom's need to realize that as well...this book is 14 years old. Good luck.
Excellent Read!!.......2006-05-29
This book was the best. There is so much useful information inside that is easy to understand and written in such a way it reads guickly and you don't have to dwell over each page to grasp it. It had the information I couldn't find other places about the nutrients you need while breastfeeding and how to know that you can eat healthy and lose the weight without having to worry about depriving your child or yourself of the wonderful bond of breastfeeding.

Product Description
With over one and a half million trade and mass-market paperback copies in print, The Complete Book of Breastfeeding is one of the recognized classics in its field. Now it has been completely revised and updated, and dovetails perfectly with the recent major policy statement by the American Academy of Pediatrics, which recommends exclusive breastfeeding for the first six months and continued nursing for at least one year and as long thereafter as mother and child desire. In addition to incorporating the new AAP guidelines throughout the book, the Third Edition of The Complete Book of Breastfeeding draws on the very latest research from prominent scholars and practitioners in the field. It presents new information on how breastfeeding offers protection against various diseases for both child and mother; new discussion of the positive impact of breastfeeding on a child's cognitive development; a greatly expanded section on available support systems and their importance; guidelines to help a mother-to-be choose a hospital or birthing center with breastfeeding-positive policies; and a new section on signs of baby's adequate milk intake, with charts. Plus new and expanded sections on nutrition for lactating mothers, the mother's social life, the role of the father, the nursing working mother, how to express, store, and offer breast milk, and how to wean your child. The Complete Book of Breastfeeding is the warm, accessible, and authoritative guide for every new mother. Author Marvin S. Eiger, MD., is a nationally known pediatrician who practiced in New York City for 30 years. The Third Edition of The Complete Book of Breastfeeding was co-authored by Sally Wendkos Olds.
Customer Reviews:
The BEST Book on Breastfeeding.......2007-10-06
I used this book 27 years ago when I was pregnant with my first child. I just bought it for my friend's daughter who is having her first and wanting to breastfeed. It has been revised and updated a little, but retains the same great, easy to understand information. The best part is the table of contents. It breaks down the layout of the book to small chunks of information allowing you to quickly find specific information you're looking for,ie: feeding positions, what to do about blocked ducts, building up your milk supply, etc. I highly recommend it!!
An Easy to Read and Informative Book .......2007-06-12
The book facts are well organized in this book with relevant headings for each chapter. New mothers would find this book exceptionally useful as it contains information other than breastfeeding. Tips on how to eat a well balanced diet and understanding your postpartum body are put across in simple terms. I would recommend this as a baby shower gift to mothers who intend to breastfeed.
Very helpful.......2007-01-03
This book was extremely helpful to me as a first time mother. It was very easy to read and to use as a reference, and I'm sure it helped me to continue breastfeeding when I was feeling inadequate and unsure of myself. Now my 4 month old is still breastfed and is growing like a weed!
great for beginners.......2006-08-16
I love this book. As a first time mother, I could not have been happier with the extensive explanations and information provided. It covers all sorts of issues, not just problems that you may encounter. It also provides peace of mind assistance in the middle of the night when you can't call someone about difficulties you are having.
Good instruction, too opinionated.......2006-02-10
This book offered a lot of good information about breastfeeding and it was very complete in that sense.
It gives every reason why breastfeeding is a good thing and that's motivational. However, I bottle-fed in the past and I could have done without all of the opinions about bottle-feeders.
Being a new mother (whether it's the first time or the sixth)is an emotional time and can be overwhelming in the beginning. This book sets you up to feel like a failure if, for one reason or another, you are unable to breastfeed.
I am a healthy adult and I was bottle-fed. I have wonderful, brilliant and healthy children who have been bottle-fed. I object to the statement that this is the best thing you can ever do for your child. I agree it is beneficial, but I know there is a lot worse mothers are doing to their babies than offering a bottle of formula.
I really don't agree with the section about breastfeeding children 6, 7 and even 8 years old. Come on. That's OK, but formula is the start of a dull and unhealthy future? Please.
I wish they could have written this book to inform new mothers and left the opinions completely out of it.

Customer Reviews:
An exellent book to answer all questions about your breasts!.......1999-04-19
When I needed a complete understanding of breast cancer and everything concerning treatment options,Dr. Lauersen and Ms. Stukane's book, laid out all the info for me. Everything one needs to know, concerning the breast is in this book. It is almost a year since I was diagnosed with breast cancer. This book greatly helped me to prepare myself for making my treatment options understandable. Knowledge is an important tool when making treatment choices. I still keep this book close at hand,so that I can refer to it's information when I need it and to help friends with their questions and concerns. Dr. Lauersen's books have always been favored guides to help me answer so many questions. I'm sure that many women will agree that clear and understandable anwers are what is needed. Thankyou, Dr. Lauersen and Ms. Stukane.
A real eye opener. Not too technical, not too fluffy........1997-02-23
This a wonderful resource for anyone interested in breast health, particularly breast cancer. It covers a wide range of topics and directs the reader to other valuable sources for additional information. The authors encourage readers with computers to "go online" for the most up to date information about breast cancer (that's how I got to this Amazon.com site!).
Of all the books I've read so far about breast health, this is the best. It's written at just the right level for the layman. Not too technical, yet not full of fluff. A bargain at Amazon.com's (discounted!) price of $22.50

A Great Literary Approach to the Korean War.......2000-07-16
This is an exceptional book. For anyone with any interest in creative literature arising from warfare, whether narrative or poetic, this is a book to have. I have read hundreds of books of military history, stories, and poetry. This, by far, is the best I've seen. I am very familiar with Ehrhart's work -- and he's creative, thoughtful, and a consumate literary pro. All of this shows through here. Of the 204 pages of text, 157 pages consist of twelve stories by different authors. The rest of the book includes 39 poems by six poets. The stories and poems are all of very different styles and complement each other beautifully. One story in particular, "The Trapped Battalion," by William Chamberlain, will blow you away (pardon the pun)! There are two additional excellent and unusual aspects to this volume. First, the two editors give you a brief personal introduction to each author and poet, highlighting their connections with the Korean War and mentioning their personal and literary history as well as prominent themes in their works. Second, at the end of the book they have a detailed annotated list of recommended books, films, and poetry of the Korean War. This is one book I know I will read many times as the years go by.

Book Description
How migratory birds can navigate home from their wintering grounds to their breeding sites over hundreds and thousands of kilometres has been an admired mystery over more than a century. Profound advances towards a solution of this problem have been achieved with a model bird, the homing pigeon. This monograph summarizes our current knowledge about pigeon homing, about the birds' application of a sun compass and a magnetic compass, of a visual topographical map within a familiar area and -- most surprisingly -- of an olfactory map using atmospheric chemosignals as indicators of position in distant unfamiliar areas.

Navigate by the stars.......2002-01-05
Thomas Gladwin introduces the society of the islanders of the Caroline atolls with an indepth look at their society and how it is centered on their sea-faring tradition. These fascinating people roll with the punches as new western ideas and influences confront them, but the tenuously hang on to their traditions and, especially in the case of Puluwat, make some of the finest sialing canoes in the islands.
For a book this size Gladwin thoroughly introduces the sailing tradition of these islanders and enables European minded folks to understand the intricasies of their complex sailing tradition. Even with a limited background in sailing you learn how people can navigate small craft over long distances successfully without using any more modern technology than the compass, and even that being a recent addition.
Using star courses passed down through the generations navigators are able to travel to all the neighboring islands and even some quite far away. In this day of reliance on ever more complex technology much can be learned from these people who can travel long distances entirely without electronic instruments.
This book is pleasant to read and surprisingly free of technical jargon. It is particularly remarkable for its frank portrayal of a culture so different from most people's experience, but in a way that you feel you know them as friends anbd neighbors by the end of the book. Quite fascinating.
