    Book Description

A combination of dynastic disputes, feudal quibbles, trade disagreements and historical antagonism resulted in the opening of the Hundred Years War in 1337. The first major English land victory in this conflict was the Battle of Crécy. This pitted the French army, then considered the best in Europe, against the English under King Edward III. The battle established the longbow as one of the most feared weapons of the medieval period, a reputation reinforced at the bloody battle of Poitiers where much of the French nobility was slaughtered and their king captured by the English host.

2 out of 5 stars More about the nobles than the actual armies........2006-02-19

Although this volume purports to cover the armies of these two key battles, only two of the colour plates feature actual soldiers. The rest depict various nobles and lords, including Edward III and Jean II, even though their armor is not at all indicative of what the rest of the armies were wearing. Worse still, these nobles are shown in fancy types of armor, like crested helms, that even the text admits they would not have been wearing on the battlefield. The text does include some interesting details on command and control and supply logistics, but as a reference on the actual field armies it is thin.

5 out of 5 stars Rothero an exceptionally rare writer & illustrator.......2003-04-19

A most excellent reference for the early period of the 100 Years War. Great written overview of the era. Great research and photos of actual effigies, etc. Not to take anything away from McBride, but I feel Rothero is a master in this arena (Medieval arms/armor). I would recommend this book to anyone who's even remotely interested in the subject; it'll convince you to want to learn more.

4 out of 5 stars Good, informative overview of subject.......2000-04-04

Well illustrated and with clear, concise notes to the plates, along with a brief introduction to the war and its background, this book is a helpful introduction to the subject. However, it is little more than this, and certainly the text is somewhat lacking in detail. For instance, on the causes of the war the book fails to mention French inroads into the dutchy of Gascony, by allowing Gasons the right of appeal in French courts and protecting them (by legal or other means)while proceedings took place (usually from the English government in Bordeaux), the war of Saint-Sardos, and the liege homage done by Edward III to Philip of France, all of which were important contributors to the start of war. Some of the battle maps used rely on somewhat outdated evidence, but sections on mediaeval armies in general, their command structure, and logistics etc. are very useful. As for the plates, these are very revealing reconstructions of the troops that fought in this period of the hundred years war, and although some books may be more detailed and thorough on arms and equipment etc., nevertheless, it provides welcome colour depictions that are generally accurate, and certainly from a heraldic point of view, very instructive as to how knights appeared in the early stages of the war. A good book for modelers and military uniformologists, the illustrations more than make up for what this book lacks text wise. Nice to look at, it would be an ideal companion to 'Trial by battle', providing the illustrations which the other lacks, and putting the colour back into the Hundred years war.

      Book Description

Sick of the total BS of rampant PC?

This brazen, furiously funny book is the antidote to today's poison of political correctness. With humor and chutzpah, attorney, commentator, and popular radio host Michael Smerconish takes on today's oversensitive culture with a collection of entertaining, outlandish anecdotes about PC gone wild-stories that are hilarious, horrifying, and unbelievably true.

Why are sports leagues handing out trophies to losers? Why are little old grandmas hired to guard 200-pound prisoners? Why are newborn babies and old men with walkers singled out at the airport while likely terrorists are ushered through security with ease?

This book shows through these absurdities that today's atmosphere of censorship and multiculturalism is paving the way for serious threats to our cultural identity and national security: "It's one thing for the forces of political correctness to muzzle our day-to-day lives here at home in the US, quite another when that same cancer metastasizes into the war on terror."

We must eradicate the PC disease. Our sanity-and our very lives-depend on it.

"Michael Smerconish talks the talk: If you say unpopular things, watch out! Using vivid examples of PC rubbish, Muzzled will lead you into a world that would terrify Rod Serling. An entertaining and provocative book."

      - Bill O'Reilly

"Reads like fiction, too bad it's true."

      - Nelson DeMille, novelist, author of Night Fall and The General's Daughter

"The PC virus is out of control . . . and it's worse than you think! In this entertaining and important book, Michael Smerconish chronicles just how mindless things have gotten in politically correct America. He tells fascinating stories that will make you laugh . . . right up until the time they make you scream. Thanks to the PC crowd, we are all living in The United States of the Absurd."

      - Bernard Goldberg, journalist and author of 100 People Who Are Screwing Up America, Arrogance, and Bias

"I really squirm whenever I find myself agreeing with Smerconish. (I know the feeling is mutual.) I did a lot of squirming while reading this provocative book. All true liberals and conservatives must agree with Smerconish that the PC muzzles must be removed so that people can decide based on the marketplace of ideas."

      - Alan Dershowitz, Felix Frankfurter Professor of Law, Harvard and author of Preemption

"I don't often find myself on the same side of the political barricades as Michael Smerconish. But Muzzled is a witty, provocative, and timely book. Even when Michael is wrong, which is often, he draws you in and keeps you reading."

      - Arianna Huffington, author of Pigs at the Trough and Fanatics and Fools

"By proving the link between America's political correctness at home and its looming defeat abroad, Smerconish performs a great and courageous public service. Citizens should take this book to heart . . . and then vote to defeat the rogue multiculturalists who value 'ethnic and racial sensitivities' far more than America's survival."

      - Michael F. Scheuer, author of Imperial Hubris and Through Our Enemies' Eyes, former chief of the CIA's Osama bin Laden Unit

"In Muzzled, my American Blood Brother of status-quo-obliterating defiance, Michael Smerconish, once again smokes out the cockroaches of political correctness . . . Muzzled is a great title for a book that I am convinced every American school kid should read and be tested on. If a new generation doesn't grow some intellectual balls, our Once Great Nation will continue to repeat horrific mistakes and pay the price . . . Read it. Live it."

      - Ted Nugent, rock star, author, television personality, and hunter extraordinaire

      5 out of 5 stars A must-read.......2007-08-30

I rarely tell people that they really `must' read a book because people have different likes and dislikes. But in the society we live in today in America, Muzzled by Michael A. Smerconish is absolutely a must read.

Smerconish maintains that we've all become muzzled in the world of political correctness--and it's not getting better, it's getting worse. People are `required' to think once, then twice, before they say anything. If they aren't careful, they may find themselves sued; they may lose their job or be ridiculed by friends and acquaintances. We've recently seen what happened to Imus when he opened his mouth. The press never fails to ridicule President Bush when he misspeaks. And oftentimes Ann Coulter'ss outspoken remarks look quite different when the entire statement is played, and not just the `bite' that the media presents to the public.

Smerconish has taken true stories and repeated them in his book in a way that will have people laughing nervously (while looking around for the PC police), shaking their heads in amazement and disbelief--and I suspect some stories will be more than a little anger producing.

With so many outlandish stories, it's difficult to choose a few to whet a reader's appetite. Consider:

--The manner in which much of the media cover stories when a person of color (see I've been PC'd) is the alleged perpetrator vs. a caucasian. Or a paper apologizing that they couldn't print a photo of a white man along with people of color because the perpetrators weren't white.

--What might happen if an employer gives an employee a book about dressing for success? It just might cost the employer a cool $600,000.

--Or what about `Ladies Night' at the bar? Sometimes there's a man out there that just doesn't think it's fair.

--And the story about Dean Koontz' letter to the owner of a Japanese company when he wasn't getting the response he wanted about a book-to-movie deal will have some shaking their heads.

I'm sure that some folks won't like the stories I've chosen.

Armchair Interviews says: Muzzled is a must read and highly recommended.

      5 out of 5 stars Amen; Right-on; Word;.......2007-08-27

However you want to say it Michael Smerconish tells it like it is.
It's also serious and funny at the same time, he is able to tell you how the system can be so politically correct it' s outrageous. Must read!

4 out of 5 stars Muzzled- the truth of PC (Political Correctness).......2007-08-05

Smerconish has it right on the ball, most of the time. As the old saying goes, "If walks like a duck, quacks like a duck,..." Several years ago, I diagnosed myself as being "politically dysfuntional"- Much the same thing, only ahead of my (our) time. He seems to be obsessed with continually connecting this 'Muzzled' phenomenom with the terrorism crisis. Maybe to some degree, but... Interesting rainy day reading.

1 out of 5 stars I thought this would be interesting ..........2007-08-04

but what a boring book!! I found the stories to be about issues that seemed trite and uninteresting, and about very little I could personally relate to. I saw the author on a television talk show, and he seemed to be a good story teller, but I didn't find the book itself to reflect that. I thought he was a bit of blowhard and I just got irritated at his perspective. I read through about half the book before I decided it wasn't going to get any better for me. I would never recommend this book.

5 out of 5 stars Muzzled: From T-Ball to Terrorism.......2007-07-16

What a great book...it's too bad all of America is not required to read it and act accordingly.

          Book Description

Laughing Kookaburras are the largest kingfishers in the world, and Blue-winged Kookaburras are not far behind. Their size and distinctive shape and posture make them easily recognisable; their comical and personable characters make them readily memorable. They are able to live in a wide variety of habitats, and adapt to living around humans relatively well. This cheerful familiarity has caused them to figure prominently in the psyches and folklores of all peoples who have inhabited Australia.

Kookaburras live in family groups marked by the extremes of social behaviour. Whilst in the nest, chicks fight their siblings for dominance and food so aggressively that the smallest chick is often killed. In complete contrast, many adult kookaburras delay their own breeding in order to help their relatives raise young.

Kookaburra: King of the Bush provides a complete overview of kookaburras and their unique place in Australian culture and natural history.

5 out of 5 stars More than a collection of stories.......2001-06-03

It is no wonder that the author has children fighting over copies of this !!! When I hold it I say "MINE MINE MINE" too. The work is not only excellently WRITTEN - it manages to achieve that ever present goal of the writer - to entertain and teach simultaneously. The parables are so unforgettable - they stay with you and haunt you and make you a better person. I find myself going over and over the stories in my mind when I am quiet or even when I am not - they just keep running through my brain - and each time I learn something more. There is gentle and strong wisdom here - with a touch of magick. However it becomes very addictive - mine is being used and loved till it is worn out. This is more than a collection of stories - it is one of those creations that also becomes a beloved friend.

"A romping good time!"-LesbiaNation.com on The Wombat Strategy

Owning half a detective agency is not as exciting as it sounds when your partner won't let you solve any cases. Transplanted Aussie Kylie Kendall is frustrated as all get out, and she spends most of her time hanging out with her receptionist and sampling the Los Angeles nightlife. But that's about to change. Twins Alf and Chica Hartnidge, the hosts of Australia's hit children's television show The Oz Mob, hire Kylie to find out who's smuggling opals into the United States inside their Kelvin Kookaburra plush toys. A syndication deal and a load of money are riding on whether Kylie will shut down the smugglers, but a murder (or two) makes the stakes even higher.

Claire McNab is the author of The Wombat Strategy, as well as 18 other best-selling mystery novels. She has served as the president of Sisters in Crime and is a member of both the Mystery Writers of America and the Science Fiction Writers of America. She lives in Los Angeles.

          A self-absorbed receptionist who treats her day job as if she were awarding her co-workers a treasured personal appearance;

An icy, blue-eyed blonde who makes the slightly klutzy Kylie trip over herself even more than usual; and

A pseudo-preacher to the stars, offering his supplicants one of his hands in compassion while the other steals through their pockets.

These are some of the priceless characters waiting to delight the reader in Claire McNab's second Kylie Kendall mystery. (Note to reader: If by chance you missed the first of the series, "The Wombat Strategy," stop reading this immediately and go get it!) Now where were we?

Though the setting is Los Angeles at its Kleig-lit best, we see it far more clearly through the eyes of our newly-transplanted Australian heroine, the funny, adorable and ingenuous Kylie Kendall. Take the greedy Hollywood bad guys lying and conniving as usual, add Kylie, the detective-with-training-wheels hot on their trail, doing her newbie best not to get lost in either the hairpin twists of the plot as well as the L.A. streets and Bam! you get one deliciously deadly, funny mix.

Lighter in tone than Ms. McNab's other two series, the Carol Ashton and Denise Cleever mysteries, "The Kookaburra Gambit" has only one fault--it ends far too quickly. Hurry, Ms. McNab, and present us with the next book in this series, "The Quokka Question."

So, Ms. McNab ... how's that writing coming? Are you done yet?

5 out of 5 stars Smashing good fun, blokes!.......2005-04-20

Ms. McNab lives up to the promise shown in the Wombat Strategy, her first Kylie Kendall Mystery. The Kookaburra Gambit takes up where the Wombat Strategy left off. Our heroine is a neophyte private eye, newly arrived from down under. She is still (very capably) learning to cope with all the differences in her world. The mystery is great, and the book is genuinely funny. The matchup between Kylie and the rabid Christian right is fine to see.

I just wish these books were longer, and came out lots more often. I can hardly wait for the next volume in the series!

This is a fun book to share with children. It discusses how the sun came to shine in the sky. It gives a great opportunity to compare this folktale to those of other cultures, such as the Greeks and various American Indian tribes.

5 out of 5 stars Sure, read it. Buy the whole series.......2001-01-02

This is a great book for people of all ages to read. It's fun, exciting, and you learn about the Land Down Under. It also has great morals. I've read it, and found it very enjoyable. We have the whole series, and aren't disapointed with our purchase. Patrick's little brother Michael hides in a hot air balloon. When the ropes break loose, the balloon goes off, and Michael's caught in! Patrick gets jerked off his feet when one of the ropes catches on his arm. He ends up also in the balloon with Michael, and the balloon's pilot, who is a chattery know it all who fancies himself the world's greatest balloonist. The ballon makes a crash landing and a big man with a large, scarred face rescues them. When he takes them back to town, men make fun of the man. ONe even predicts he will be a criminal. Back on their boat, the Lady Elizabeth, Jefferson, who was going to bring them their wool, says the people at Kookaburra station are behind and.....he promised they would help out! So they all go to Kookaburra station to help with the wool. It turns out that is where the big man lives! They become friends, but the big man never speaks. Then there's a fire, and at the end of the fire, Patrick makes a confession to the man, called Ibrahim, and finds out why he never speaks.
