Book Description

Does Your Doctor Charge Too Much? is the first book of its kind to answer these and many more questions about medical fees. You can look up the actual fees for thousands of medical, surgical and diagnostic treatments, and can use the information to "shop" for elective procedures like obstetric care, or to challenge high fees by doctors or low payments by insurance companies.

The book also explains how to read and interpret the "secret" codes and language of doctors' bills and insurance claim forms. And you'll learn about the often hostile relationship between healthcare providers (doctors, hospitals, home health agencies, etc.) and healthcare payers (government, private insurance companies, HMO's, etc.) and how this conflict costs the public millions of dollars a year in lost insurance benefits.

2 out of 5 stars An interesting concept, but question usefulness........1999-01-25

A primer on reading and interpreting coding on medical bills, insurance company lingo, reimbursement issues, and a general how-to guide for the patient dealing with obtaining optimal payment from insurance companies for medical procedures. This book could be a valuable tool for the individual with limited coverage. However, the coding system is so overwhelming, with widely differing prices for what appears to be the same procedure. For example, I counted 15 different laparoscopic pelvic procedures for endometriosis. Determining what an actual fee should be based on this book is difficult. And it is doubtful you would find a doctor's office staff willing to explain why a certain service was billed under a certain code. A good idea in theory, but probably difficult to obtain.

Crosshairs on the Kill Zone

From the authors of the classic sniper chronicle One Shot-One Kill comes a new generation of true tales from some of the most expert and deadly marksmen in the world. Meet Adelbert Waldron II, whose 109 confirmed kills in Vietnam made him the most successful sniper in American military history, and Tom "Moose" Ferran, who coined the term "Fetch!", whereupon the infantry would retrieve the sniper's dead quarry. Also included are stories from snipers in Beirut, the Bosnian conflict, and both wars with Iraq -- including the feat of Sergeants Joshua Hamblin and Owen Mulder, who took down thirty-two enemy soldiers in a single day outside Baghdad in 2003.

The military sniper has evolved into one of the most dangerous and highly-skilled warrior professions. They suffer through weather, terrain, and enemy action, lay unmoving for days on end, and take out their targets with unerring accuracy -- proving that the deadliest weapon in any battle, anywhere in the world, is a single well-aimed shot.

5 out of 5 stars A Good Read.......2007-07-29

This book is composed of a number of really good stories and documentation of actual military snipers at work, and how they got to be snipers. It also shows how important these men are to modern day warfare, particularly when they have at hand a 50 caliber rifle that can be fired one shot at a time. Also,up to date military technology, such as laser distance finders and NVG's (Night Vision Goggles) make these snipers a key and overwhelming element in modern warfare.

4 out of 5 stars A good addition to the library.......2006-07-28

This collection of real stories explains the thoughts, emotions, tactics, skills, and importance of a snipers role in modern warfare and importance it has on positive results. Explained in real simple context but yet detailed down to every intense and drop of sweet moment.

3 out of 5 stars A good book.......2006-07-10

For people that have an interest in Snipers and all they do, you've probably heard or read these stories before. Still, Carlos Hathcock's story is a good read again and again.

4 out of 5 stars Crosshairs on the Kill Zone.......2005-10-01

Excellent account of the history of sniping with detailed stories of many who have served in this capacity throughout this country's wars. Almost as good as Carlos Hathcock's own account of his days in Viet Nam. I would highly recommend this book to anyone interested in this unique style of warfare or who has an eye and ear for history.

4 out of 5 stars Eye opening combat book.......2005-08-28

This is an extremely enlightening collection of short accounts of snipers during wartime. It was extremely interesting to my wife as her cousin wrote one of the articles about his Vietnam experiences. Each chapter had its special moments, but none more poignant than his when he wrote of his best "shot". In this example it was a case of him not taking off his safety which kept him from mistaking one of his own marines for a N. Viet namese. The whole book is filled with examples of heroism and real dedication to their comrades.

Book Description

In Through the Crosshairs, Andy Dougan chronicles the art of sharp shooting, from the first instance of strategic execution during the English civil war to the snipers in the jungles of Vietnam. Dougan identifies the great snipers of each era and explains the circumstances in which their reputations were established and very often embellished. From the gunman who chose not to fire on a retreating George Washington during the Revolutionary War to the “white stocking” of Chechnya, Through the Crosshairs is a fascinating look at the marksmen and -women who have taken up the gun to expert and deadly effect.

In an era in which we’ve attempted to make warfare as impersonal as new technology will allow, Through the Crosshairs illustrates how the sniper, while once a pariah in the eyes of his fellow troops, has evolved into a chillingly ideal soldier for modern warfare: precise, economical, remote, and, most important, lethal. Dougan’s book is a fascinating reminder that despite our attempts otherwise, man may always be the deadliest weapon of all.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars This is a 'must have' for military history and sniper history fans alike!!!!.......2006-07-11

I have read a lot of military history and read just about every sniper book ever written (not to mention the manuals that were attached to my training) and I found this to be one of the most interesting and informative, from a historical, tactical, emotional and psychological standpoint. Although it is obvious that the writer is not America (he puts the first battle of the Revolutionary War at Lexington, Kentucky instead of Massachusetts and calls trunks `boot's' and gasoline `petrol') and that the fact checkers missed that the D.C. sniper was Army not Marine it is still a `must have' in any military book collection. (His descriptions of Ernie Pyle's death seems to match everything else I have read although I have seen some people say it is inaccurate.)

This book does not have the move by move descriptions that a lot of other books do so if you are looking for `Marine Sniper' type excitement this is not it but it does a great job of going through the history of weapons and tactics that led up to today's snipers and touches nicely on the emotions and mindset that has been exhibited over time by snipers. It discusses how infantry tactics had to be changed world wide because of snipers and it also touches on some of the more sensitive issues of combat mindset among snipers and even quotes some snipers who had to quite because they just weren't cut out for it. It ties in nicely and helps explain why arms act the way they do and why they made changes over time. I will never read another book on military history or tactics without seeing how snipers helped to shape new trends in defense and offense.

No book is perfect and this author obviously isn't a former sniper but I think it is one of the best books on the topic that I have ever read and I would say it is a `must have' for anyone who wants a better understanding of how today's sniper came to be and more importantly why the military has changed its tactics and its weaponry over the years.

Out of the 100+ military books I own this has to rank in the top 10 and is right at the top of the list of sniper history books. Maybe the fact that the author was never a sniper helps him approach the topic from a more academic standpoint.

And you former and present Marines don't be offended by the references to your training and your brotherhood. As an average Joe it didn't leave me feeling any ill will towards military training. It is just the nature of the beast that some ex-military folks are going to turn out to be wackos...I would bet the percentage is much higher for your average American who has never defended his country. The author was not mistaken that the D.C. sniper was ex-military, he just picked the wrong branch of the military. To a Brit non-vet, Army and Marine probably mean the same thing and shouldn't be enough to bend readers out of shape. Should the mistake be fixed before the next publishing, of course, but it doesn't diminish this book as a great read.

3 out of 5 stars SOVIET BALONEY.......2006-04-10

The book is rather casually written, but it does have some interesting information on Finnish and Soviet sniping during WWII. The all-time champion sniper was a Finn with 550 and he survived. The story about the duel between Zaitsev and Konig at Stalingrad, which was the basis for the motion picture, Enemy at the Gates, is fictional and Soviet statistics were inflated. So the book at least does shed some light. I don't know if Muhammad was a Marine, but Oswald was. An military organization can't be held responsible for everybody that passes through its ranks.

2 out of 5 stars Poor Scholarship.......2005-06-09

Judging by the cover, Through the Crosshairs appears to be a timely discussion of the history of sniper operations. Unfortunately, Mr. Dougan does a poor job of ensuring that his historical information is correct. Perhaps worst of all, Mr. Dougan's style makes his work conspiracy theory as much as scholarly research. Dougan's outrageous claim that John Allen Muhammad was a United States Marine is ridiculous and insulting. Shame on the publisher for ever allowing this book to hit the streets.

One of the most comprehensive single-volume reference works on birds ever produced.

With photographs and descriptions of over 1,300 species, plus a full listing of every bird species in the world, this outstanding reference is an up-to-date portrait of the world birds. An international team of ornithologists provides concise descriptions and reveals the latest science in bird evolution, behavior, ecology, classification and identification. Organized by region and habitat rather than species, the book allows for a more instinctive understanding of birds and their relationships with each other and the environment.

The opening section on bird evolution and anatomy explains species classification and identification, showing how DNA research is causing a re-evaluation of the known science.

The directory makes up the bulk of the book. It is divided into six sections on the Earth's zoogeographical regions. Each section is written by a recognized authority and includes a thorough review of species, habitat and threats, and conservation organizations. Along with specially commissioned artwork, each species description includes:

This superb reference closes with an up-to-date list of the more than 9,800 species of birds recognized by ornithologists.

This book was very helpful when identifying birds of Hong Kong. The color photographs of each bird were clear and extremely helpful, and the descriptions helped me distinguish similar species if I was still in doubt after seeing the picture. The range maps seem accurate, and the book's small size makes it very portable and convenient to carry. The only drawback was that several species I saw, some fairly commonly, were not listed or pictured, so I was unable to identify them at the time. Overall, I would recommend this book for someone wanting to identify Hong Kong birds.

4 out of 5 stars Finally, a useable book for raptor id.......2007-03-10

Being a naturalist from the age of seven or so, I have long been a keen observer of birds with particular attention paid to the raptors and soaring birds. All the books I had previously owned or seen about raptors stop far short of giving the info necessary for identifying the hawks and eagles of various ages and genders, as many of them will resemble another breed at various levels of maturity and in different seasons. This book almost eliminates those problems, giving excellent photos and descriptions that enable positive identification provided the observer gets a good enough look at the bird. It also provides useable field id pointers that will eliminate many questions with only a "sketchy" look at a flying or sitting raptor.
A good book that should sit on the front seat of any raptor friend's car; one that will be used time and again in the field.

5 out of 5 stars Soar With the Falcons!.......2007-01-18

This masterpiece is one of the best field guides for raptors in North America. Readers are treated to several pictures of each type of bird. Raptors are shown perched and in flight, face on and in side view. Readers also see the field markings on the birds which are fully explained in a clear, direct way. A guide to helping readers identify the differences among the raptors is also provided. This is an excellent, outstanding work.

This is by far the very best book I have ever seen. The photos and details are just Great. I would advise anyone that watchs for these beautiful birds to have this as a guide!!

5 out of 5 stars A Photographic Guide to North American Raptors.......2003-03-11

This is the best photographic guide to north american raptors available. The photos are very clear so you can see details on plumage. It also includes multiple photos of the species that have morphs, which is very helpful in the field. This is not a book I would recommend if you are using it for written reference. But I give it 5 stars for a field reference guide!

5 out of 5 stars Useful field guide, shows variability of morphs.......2001-10-21

This is simply the best field guide for North American diurnal raptors that I have seen. Unlike some other photgraphic guides, it provides several images of each species in poses that one is likely to see in the field: perched and soaring from above and the side (showing field marks of top of wing and tail). It shows several examples of different morphs and ages for most birds. This is critical in understanding the variability in markings within a species. In addition, it has a section on field identification problems, detailing differences between similar looking birds. To my knowledge, there is no substitute.

However, the paperback version is somewhat cheaply produced. The publisher should improve the binding and the quality of paper for this book. Try not to get it wet.

                Book Description

This book is the first ever, comprehensive photographic guide to the identification of all 24 species of hummingbirds to be seen as breeders or vagrants in North America.

For all their startling colors, the speed of hummingbird flight and the often drab coloration of females and immatures make this group especially difficult to deal with in the field. The simple field marks are often poorly lit, hard to spot, or simply not shown by any particular individual under observation. But accurate identification of these popular and beautiful birds brings both real satisfaction and a welcome challenge to most birders.

Steve Howell, a well-known and respected bird tour leader and author, has made a particular study of the finer points of hummingbird recognition and has specially chosen over 200 stunning photographs to complement the information given in his text. Some species feature as many as 14 photographs each. A detailed introduction covers the basics of hummingbird anatomy and plumage variation, allowing the observer to effectively focus on points that are of value in the field. New field marks are provided and old myths dispelled in this ground breaking and essential new guide.

                Key Features:

                * Contains up to 14 full-color photos for each species, with detailed photo captions
                * Detailed introduction covers fundamentals of hummingbird identification, including discussions of anatomy, plumage variation, and molt
                * Comprehensive species accounts describe all plumages, compare similar species in depth, and discuss voice, displays, behavior, geographic range, and seasonal distribution
                * Emphasizes difficult to identify plumages, such as females and immatures
                * Features 200 stunning photos picked specifically to show identification criteria

5 out of 5 stars Steve Howell's photographic hummingbird guide.......2006-03-01

This is a very useful book for birders who want to be able to identify hummingbirds in the U.S. It includes photos and accompanying text for every hummingbird that you are likely (or lucky enough) to spot within U.S. borders. The text is particularly good, and the photos are shown large enough to be of use to the beginner/intermediate birdwatcher in addition to the experienced observer.

At The Hummingbird Web Site and at the guest ranch we manage in the mountains in southeastern Arizona we are often asked what is the best hummingbird book. Here's the answer: Steve Howell's Hummingbirds of North America: A Photographic Guide. We refer to it almost daily. It sits in our office beside the three other bird books we would not be without -- the Sibley Guide, Jon Dunn's National Geographic Field Guide, and A Guide to the Birds of Mexico by - Guess who? - Steve Howell. Most of our guests are bird watchers on vacation. The book they were all talking about last year was the Sibley Guide. This year the book most often mentioned is the Howell hummingbird book.

                1 out of 5 stars A Photgraphic Misguide........2000-12-09

Years of birds and birdwatching has proved that for the purpose of reference books or field guides, good illustrations win hands down over photographs. A photograph of a bird is O.K. till it stays in a personal collection or, at most, in a exhibition where wannabe birdwatchers can drool over it. For a serious birdwatcher in a field, a photograph is useless. And it's not that there is a lack of illustrators. They virtually abound : Carl D' Silva, John H. Dick, Martin Woodcock, Irani, just to name a few.

Some of the "features" of this book, mentioned at the back, are ironies in themselves. The first one reads : "Distinctive thumbnail colour tabs outlining each family group to enable quick identification" The tabs in question are little coloured squares at the top left and top right of each alternating left and right pages respectively indicating the family of the birds on that particular page, the key to which is located on page 7.The so called quick identifiacation of a bird family is the last thing on a birdwatcher's mind. Perchance the refernce is to the birds themselves, then , well it will be a insult of the readers's intellect if I say that a commonly accepted vernacular name of a species renders any such tabs meaningless. Anyway, the process of identifying a family with the help of these tabs is anything but quick.

The second one says : "Compact, easy-to-use format; the ideal pocket-size travelling companion". Oh yes, this book is compact alright. And it fits into the pocket very easily. The photographs are small to begin with and in some cases, legs of birds are neatly cut off(Peregrine Falcon, pg 44; Great Horned Owl, pg 77).The distribution maps are even smaller and vague to the extreme. A cheap Agatha Christie is a better travelling companion than this.

The third goes : "Authoritative text describing key identification features". This "authoratative text", dear reader, is a detailed description of plumage followed by habitat, some general characters and call. The first part(plumage description)takes up 85 % of the text and so there remains little space for the rest of the things. Compare this with the precise notes of "A Book Of Indian Birds"(Salim Ali) or the to-the-point, brief but short accompanies of "A Pictorial Guide to the Birds of the Indian Subcontinent"(Salim Ali. S. Dillon Ripley).

And now the main problem of photographs. They are, as I said earlier, small. And they depict only the male of the species : no winter and summer plumages in water birds, no phases in raptors, no immatures, no females. Just one plain colour photograph of each species(Totalling 252, as the only sincere "feature" says). Each species is accompanied by a detailed description of plumage(Refer to Feature 3). This itself shows the author's lack of trust on the credibility of the photographs to act as useful guides. The reader may argue that a single photograph is space saving; but I assure that any birdwatcher will prefer a 30x30 1 ton book on the field provided that it is competent rather than this pretty guide which is, like all pretty things, worthless.

Most of the phototgraphs are tolerable to a little extent, but some really blow you off. Try, for example, to make out birds from their shadows : Chestnut Bittern(p 22), Kalij Pheasant(p 49), Red Junglefowl(p 50), Tailor Bird(p 117), Lesser Whitethroat(p118). Or, if you prefer grass and other foliage, you can try your hand at Honey Buzzard(p 36), Grey Partridge(p 47), Jungle Bush Quail(p 48), Bengal Florican(p 56), Common Fantail Snipe(p 63), Sylark(p 92), Black Bulbul(p 108). Many smaller birds are shown in nests and I will and I will name them as "breeding unidentifyables" : Common Wood Shrike(p 104), Common Iora(p 105), Goldfronted Leafbird(p 106), YellowEyed Babbler(p 109), Quaker Babbler(p 112), Streaked Fantail Warbler(p 116), Ashy Wren Warbler(p 117), Tickell's Flowerpecker(p 129). Two are evn shown being held in hand: Paddyfield Warbler(p 118), Goldfinch(p 137).

That is the problem : birds, photographed in their natural surroundings will certainly present all these problems, whereas in illusrtations, it is in the artist's hand to depict a bird as he wants. All the photgraphs are excellent in themselves; but in the context of a field guide, they are wasted. The choice of birds also beats logic. The book contains 252 species which rae obviously meant to be common. But the Pelicans(p 15), Swamp Partridge(p 48), Blacknecked Crane(p 52), Siberian Crane(p 58), Slaty-headed Parakeet(p 74), the Nightjars(p 79), Blur-bearded BeeEate(p 84), Red-billed Chough(p 102), White throated Laughing Thrush(p 111), Streaked River Chat(p 123), Cinnamon Tree Sparrow(p 132), Allied Grosbeak(p 137), the Buntings(p 139) are all relatively uncommon and restricted. Some birds which are more common and which, I feel, should have been included are : Intermediate Egret, Black Eagle, Pale Harrier, Common Bustard-Quail, Satyr Tragopan, Demoiselle Crane, Houbara, Indian Plaintive Cuckoo, Common Indian Nightjar, Palm Swift, Heartspotted Woodpecker, Indian Cliff Swallow, Swallow(atleast one of them), Red headed Bunting, Black headed Bunting. Obviously, the availibility of photographs ruled the list of birds. It is surprising, because logic says that the photgraphs of commoner birds should be more available then rare ones.
