                      Book Description

The battle of wills that started forty years of Cold War, told for the first time using sources from all sides

Over fifty years ago, the Soviet army blockaded West Berlin. The U.S. and Britain responded with an airlift, packing WWII troop planes with coal, potatoes, and flour. Not even air commanders believed that the fleet could supply the city for long, yet "Operation Vittles" won the opening battle of the Cold War. Flying in weather so bad "the birds walked," harassed by Soviet fighters, Allied airmen kept West Berlin fed, fueled, and free.

Berlin in the Balance tells the full, gripping story of this crucial conflict. We see the crisis develop through the eyes of Harry Truman, the airlift pilots, and the Berlin civilians who cheered the "raisin bombers." And, through newly available documents, we learn how Soviet leaders imposed the blockade and then backed down.

                      Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars Not enough oral histories.......1999-08-25

Gives a detailed account of the political and diplomatic manoeuvres between the Western Allies and the USSR, as well as within the US Government during that period. However, it lacked anecdotes on the blockade and airlift, which would have made it a more enjoyable read. Left me wanting more.

                        Book Description

Artemesia is the daughter of a pirate queen, and she's sick of practicing deportment at the Angels Academy for Young Maidens. Escaping from the school, she hunts up her mother's crew and breezily commands them out to sea in a leaky boat. Unfortunately, Art's memories of her early life may not be accurate-her seasick crew are actors, and Art's infamous mother was the darling of the stage in a pirate drama. But fiery, pistol-proof Art soon shapes her men into the cleverest pirate crew afloat. And when they meet the dread ship Enemy and her beautiful, treacherous captain, Goldie Girl, Art is certain that her memories are real. The Seven Seas aren't large enough for two pirate queens: Art will have the battle of her life to win her mother's title--and the race for the most fabulous treasure in pirate lore. This gaudy, outrageous tale sparkles with swordplay, skullduggery, and salty language--not to mention over-the-top comedy!

                        5 out of 5 stars I LOVE THIS BOOK!.......2007-07-20

Okay, first I just need to say, this book is not just for middle-to-high school readers. I would recommend it to anyone! I seriously LOVE this book. I didn't find any of it hard to read, or confusing at all, I thought it was unique and I liked the writing style. I read this book in two days and immediately got the sequel. I like that it's not one of those books where you know what's going to happen at the end; it's not the kind where you know there's going to be a happy ending. It kept me guessing until the last two or three pages. It's witty, full of romance (and that alone is enough to pull me in!), and engaging. You can tell it was really well thought out, and everything comes together in the end in a way that surprised me. The characters are wonderful, because they're not perfect. They have little quirks and real personalities. I loved it the first time I read it and now, two times later, I still do. Even if you don't buy this book, you should at least get it from the library. It's completely worth it!

5 out of 5 stars Adventurous and Satisfying!.......2007-05-12

Piratica was just the kind of book I was looking for; something about adventure on the seas. And all the unexpected twists and turns throughout really captures you! I've read many books, and this by far is my favorite. It satisfys every reader looking for adventure, romance, a good sword fight or two, and of course pirates!

4 out of 5 stars Great, worthwhile read.......2007-03-25

As a fourteen-year-old using (with permission) her mother's account, I really enjoyed this book.

The first time I saw it, I wasn't very interested by the description or cover, and only decided to get it because it was free (long story--I wasn't in a bookstore). But I was hooked within the first ten pages. Though the author uses a style which is hard to get into at first, it was a nice change of pace from the usual, standard way books are written, and overall I think it would not have been as good if it hadn't been written this way. The alternate universe thing is a tad confusing, but it makes sense that she should need to use it, for the plot would be different if England were a monarchy in the book.

As a hopeless romantic when it comes to books (that is, to a certain extent) I really liked the romance in this book. I actually thought she could have gone a bit more into that part, but I think she makes up for it in the sequel, which is also good to read after the first.

In this book the main character was not my favorite character, however. She seemed to me very much the stereotypical individual!independant!sexrole!strong!female, and while I'm all for that stuff, it gets old when it's always pointed out how she "wears man's clothes" and is a "fierce female pirate" who, for instance, gives her crew breaks at rowing the boats, but never stops for a rest herself. It's a little unrealistic that after 6 years at a girl's school she'd know everything about ships and sailing and is as strong as any man.

That rant over with, Felix is ceretainly an interesting enough character to make up for Art.

Overall, I really liked this book (despite complaints--there were more things good about it that I just didn't list) and it's sequel, as well. It's a good book for middle schoolers, probably, so anyone older or younger might not like it as much. I'm really looking forward to Tanith Lee releasing a third one, and hope it's as good as the first two.

2 out of 5 stars Mediocre, yet disapointing. .......2006-12-30

I didn't enjoy this book at all, and didn't even attempt to force myself to finish it. I might have enjoyed it if I had been brainwashed and forgot a couple of other amazingly well-written historical fiction about pirates, the navy, and the 18th century; but alas, I fully understood what a flop this book is.

What could be an enjoyable past time for some, is torture for me. Where is the suspense, the action, the gritty reality? I need something concrete, yet singular!

If you too were disapointed, check out the real deal, and some of the absolute BEST books on the market: The Bloody Jack Series by L.A. Meyers. Compared to his works of masterpiece, this stuff is complete trash.

2 out of 5 stars cliched and confusing.......2006-08-26

A nice pirate preteen chick empowerment fantasy about a girl who roams the seas with her mother's acting troupe. She searches for the obligatory treasure, fights her foil (another young girl, the daughter of her mother's murderer), refuses to kill anyone but relies on her wits, and falls in love with a revenge-motivated captured hottie. The plot dwells between predictable and unique (are they pirates or are they actors? But it hits all the pirate clichés). Art is the basic obnoxious but strong witted female teenager. Felix, her love interest, is mysterious, clumsy, and interesting enough to keep the readers' attention. But all the background pirates are difficult to distinguish from each other, which becomes a problem in the end of the book. The plot meanders and is pretty slow. The end sort of sucks all the joy of pirating by making Art noble. Also, the author's style is off. She randomly italicized things way too often. I had to read some sentences three or four times to figure out the pacing/voice. There are better pirate books to read. Grade: C-

4 out of 5 stars scary subject; educational in nature.......2001-09-15

My situation and perspective comes from being a mother of a just turned 4 year-old who is for some reason, is interested in pirates and wants me to read books to him, yet is scared of them and has nightmares about them. I don't quite see how one can even discuss pirates with small children yet avoid discussions of robbery, guns, killing, and stealing. I don't think it is possible. For this review I will point out some things this book illustrates and discusses and let you decide whether your child is ready for this or may be of an age where these things may be too scary.

I borrowed this book from the library and when my son saw the cover he decided it was too scary for him and he didn't want me to read it to him. I read it to see how this author would depict pirates to an intended audience of 4-8 year olds who read picture books.

The book has a historical flair, citing places, dates, and real names of pirates. Sometimes I think there are too many dates than a young child would even care to hear about. A general overview of what a pirate is, what they do, and the harm they inflict is depicted. Swords are seen in every illustration and guns abound. Pirates have mean looks on their faces. Kidnapping is mentioned. Illustrations show scenes of pirates taking over ships and throwing people overboard. Actual dueling with swords and fighting with daggers is shown. Some passages can be scary "no treasure ship was safe from the fierce and greedy pirates". Cannon fighting is discussed and depicted. Shooting of guns in battle is shown. Walking the plank is shown. A picture shows the burning of a ship and is discussed. Treasure maps and treasure burying is briefly mentioned. How the countries dealt with pirates is discussed and mentions that pirates that are caught were often hanged for punishment (opening another can of worms for a child to be exposed to, another discussion for parent and child).

A confusing point is made where they say not all pirates are bad, and a pirate, well dressed, is shown holding a pistol and wearing a sword, these are called privateers and were considered heroes. I don't think that was explained well enough to make sense to a young child. It states the kings and queens hired them to rob ships of their enemies. I am so confused by this passage and think it sends mixed signals. This section should have either been discussed in more detail and more clearly or else just eliminated altogether since it leaves the reader confused as to whether killing and stealing is acceptable/good or is it bad (as the whole first part of the book was eluding to)? And why would it be all right and heroic for a king or queen to pay someone to kill and steal for them?

The book wraps up with saying that pirates no longer sail the seas and that "most of the oceans and seas are safe for travel". I dislike that element of unsure-ness over the safety of ocean travel. Yet another element of fear for young children, to think that even today they aren't safe if they go on a boat ride. Brief biographies of some well-known pirates (male and female) are at the end of the book.

I give it 4 stars because it is pretty detailed, is historically accurate, and the illustrations are good. I usually rate books that depict violence low, but as I said before, how can pirates be portrayed accurately if the fact that they rob, harm and murder is not included?

This book is about pirates and how they rob ships. This book is also about where pirates hide their treasure. It also talks about pirateers. I rate this book good because it was interesting. I recommend the book.

                          Product Description

Hairy Mole is no ordinary pirate. He is neither bold, brave, fearless nor handsome, but he loves an adventure. Together with his crew Belch, Pickle, the twins Crevice and Pitt, tiny Guff and Mr. Bogey the first mate, with huge nostrils, hairy ears and a cricket bat for a leg, he meets an Italian pirate ship manned by colorful non-smelly pirates with exotic birds on their heads. The adventures of Hairy Mole delight children with their ridiculous humor and simple stories. The books are fantastically illustrated with funny line drawings and text which squiggles and wiggles all over the page, making them ideal for children to start reading alone or to enjoy with an adult.

"Pirates, Adventurers of the High Seas", by David F. Marley constitutes a well researched and entertaining book on the History of Pirates in the New World. It is a remarkable narration of the rise of buccannering, and the realities which made it possible. It also discusses the decline of Piracy in the American Continent, and the changing conditions in politics, economy and war that left no place for pirates in the Western World. The last chapter describing the "Golden Age of Piracy" is accurately entitled as the "Pirate Swan-Song" because it describes the end of piratical activities in the American Continent, when the most famous pirate chieftains, such as Blackbeard, Major Bonnet, Calico Jack and Charles Vane were hanged, and the Pirate Brethern lost most of their leaders. Based on an extense biographical selection and first hand accounts, Professor Marley focuses mainly on the "Age of Buccannering", and reviews the turbulent relations between the Spanish Crown and the English and French Filibustiers who plundered the Spanish towns and ports in a secret and bizarre aliance with the English and French Crowns.

                              Book Description

From the Great Plains to the Arctic tundra, the American West, including Alaska, is home to a stunning variety of birds. This indispensable volume, both a field guide and a site-finding guide, provides an ideal introduction to the pleasures of birding west of the Mississippi. Featuring practical but little-known tips for identifying birds, it will be welcomed by beginning as well as seasoned birders.

Birding in the American West: A Handbook tells where to go, what birds to look for, and how to identify them.

describes the exciting and varied bird habitats found in the West.

is heavily illustrated with drawings and photographs to help birders in the field.

spells out useful techniques for distinguishing among similar-looking species and addresses difficult cases in far greater detail than do standard field guides.

features species accounts with valuable information on bird location, behavior, and field marks.

presents detailed listings by state on where to find birds, with an emphasis on the microhabitats of especially sought-after birds.

teaches bird-finding and bird-identifying skills applicable anywhere.

5 out of 5 stars Not just for those in the west!!.......2007-06-08

This handbook is highly recommended to ALL North American birders and visitors, not just those in the west.
This is essentially three books in one. The first section deals with general birding tips, and is applicable to everyone.
The second, and largest, section deals with difficult identifications. This is very similar to Kenn Kaufman's Advanced Birding (Roger Tory Peterson Field Guides). The species covered are those that can be found in the west, but can also be beneficial to those of us in the eastern portion of the country. For example, each of the empidonax flycatchers are covered in great detail.
The last section is a general bird-finding guide to western specialties. This section won't be as detailed as those found in more specific guides, but are still helpful to those who want to find a good spot to see certain birds.

This is a great reference for all North American birders.

4 out of 5 stars Birding in the American West: a handbook.......2000-07-11

Serious bird-watching enthusiasts are known for traveling halfway around the world to see a particular species of bird. They are also great consumers of bird-related literature. Finally, advanced birders tend to spend a disproportionate amount of time focusing on superficially similar species that are hard to identify and/or find. This book will satisfy such birding enthusiasts who can use it to build a store of knowledge on bird habitat associations, seasonal patterns of bird abundance, and nuances of field identification by sight and sound. Mr. Zimmer makes it clear that his book does not intend to provide directions to specific sites in the West (from ND to TX and west, including AK). Rather, it seeks to provide generalizable information that can be used anywhere. As such, it is a novel and useful new volume with numerous black-and-white illustrations and photographs of similar species and sought-after birds. This is an accessible book for beginning and advanced birders living in or planning a visit to the western U.S.
