Book Description
In Jane's Naval History of World War II, he covers all the different types of warship that fought from the Atlantic and Arctic to the Pacific Ocean. From aircraft carriers to submarines, assault ships to destroyers and cruisers, his paintings bring to life the incredible variety of warships that took part in the greatest naval conflict in history. Naval historian Bernard Ireland offers new insights to the conflict, investigating how German U-boats ultimately lost the battle of the Atlantic while US submarines annihiliated Japan's merchant navy. His own career in naval engineering enables him to reveal all sorts of hidden details that make Jane's Naval History of World War II a radical new contribution to 20th century history.Customer Reviews:
A good overview of a most important aspect of World War II.......2000-02-27
For a coffee table type book used for casual browsing and conversation, it is a fine addition to anyone's library. It does, however, lack the content needed to give each aspect of combat at sea a more complete picture. For example, the evolution of emphasis from capital ships to naval aviation throughout the navies of the world is incomplete if not absent altogether. Indeed, although a good deal of effort was taken in each of the six areas covered by the author, and although a great deal of excellent information was conveyed through the photography and accompanying narratives, I felt as though I needed more to get the quality view I desired when I finished with the book. And that desire for the quality view is what prompted purchase of this book in the first place. If the author had decided to double the amount of time spent on each chapter providing a more in depth presentation, I would still have made the purchase.
I will also admit to observing some weakness in the editorial review process in producing the book. I am however, prepared to accept the fact that differences exist between the Kings English and that used on this side of the Atlantic. The fact there was no section at the end providing conclusions to the findings presented in the book itself caused a rather abrupt ending. I was a bit disappointed to discover that at the end of the last chapter I turned the page only to find myself in the Index rather than in an Afterword that would have assisted me in achieving closure with the author in what otherwise could have been a great book.
Books of this calibre are an excellent means by which our history can be presented to the generations that followed the participants, and that are benefiting from the call to arms answered by a generation that came out the era of "The War to End All Wars" and was forged by the years of the Great Depression. Jane's is to be commended for the production of this book describing naval combat in World War II.

A wonderfull book on pheasants and pheasant habitat.......2000-11-04
Bird and wildlife lovers who are not specifically interested in pheasants should read this book, not only because, as Robertson explains, good pheasant habitat is good wildlife habitat for the whole range of small creatures of the woods and fields. This book can lead to a deeper understanding of wildlife habitat in general, and of how a habitat supports and limits the populations of wildlife species.
This book is an absolute must for all pheasant habitat managers and their superiors in the state agencies. An understanding of the book's central themes could increase the reader's ability to identify the elements of good habitat, even when the vegetation is different from that described by Robertson. A careful student of the book and of local habitat might gain the skill of identifying particular habitat deficiencies which limit a local pheasant population.
Following the pheasant through a year in its life cycle, Robertson discusses critical habitat requirements in elegant and convincing detail. The life and needs of the pheasant in Winter are revealed. Robertson tells us what spring territories are all about, what kind of habitat is required for a good territory, and where and how far the hens go to nest. And Robertson explains the habitat needs of chicks, that they must have an adequate diet of insects in the first weeks of their lives, and how that is a critical vulnerability.
This book is absolutely up to date, breaking new ground in our understanding of pheasants. It is based on the latest research, much of it performed by Dr. Robertson and his colleagues. Dr. Peter Robertson, BSc, PhD, perhaps the world's foremost authority on pheasants, has performed much of his research as the Senior Scientist to The Game Conservancy's Pheasants and Woodlands Research Project, in Britain.

Where Pheasants Sing: Life in South Dakota 1900-2000
Clayton Davis Manufacturer: InstantPublisher.com ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback ASIN: 1931413398 |

South Dakota - From the ground up........2002-02-01
Author Davis concludes the book with a cook's tour of South Dakota, providing useful information and tips for touring the countryside.
A delightful book highly recommended for history buffs.
Pleasing Tales.......2002-01-07
Tales cover an impressive variety of topics. They range from the famed "Corn Palace" in Mitchell---a building so large that it houses sports events, yet is covered each year with "600,000 ears of corn of all kinds"---to a "complicated recipe for Swedish meathballs."
Author Clayton Davis writes in a casual style, tells readers pleasing tales as they apparently come to his mind. For example, in writing about the giant grain elevator in his wife's hometown, Redfield, he also informs readers a bit about concrete construction of some 2000 years ago. Then he briefs us about "the first concrete reinforced bridge built in America." And he also mentions inventor Thomas Edison making "houses with poured concrete (that sold) for less than $1,200 and are still standing."
This book has many photos, mostly family snapshots. There are pictures of the author's wedding to Irene Brink in 1952; her grandmothers---"One was from Sweden and the other from Czechoslovakia;" a friend's sleek racing car; uncle Charley's old cow; and more.
Closing the book is a laid-back description of the author's "trip (to) see South Dakota the way an early mapmaker saw it." Davis reports briefly on such places as a hunting lodge where you can stay in "private rooms (or) an eighteen-bed dorm;" Britton, the town named for a general manager of an area railroad; Fort Sisseton, which offers "A five hour guided walking tour;" and other such attractions.
If you are interested in mostly early-Americana, based largely on "first-hand accounts told by immigrants in northeasten South Dakota and archival materials," written in informal prose and structure, this may be just the book for you.
