4 out of 5 stars The Subtitle Says It All.......2006-01-02

This is the story of photographic reconnaisance and photographic intelligence/interpretation in the Second World War, as told from the British persepective and largely of the British experience. The book was originally published in 1957 but republished in 2004. It suffers mildly from mistypes and double words, which is a product of careless editing of the first publishing or bad replication for the second. Despite the noticeable errors the book is worth reading. There are many tales of interest, which I don't intend to ruin here. Photographic reconnaisance was certainly one of the keys to the Allied victory in WWII that has been largely overlooked. For an enjoyable, refreshing read on a somewhat overwritten topic--WWII--pick up this book. If you are into "secret" history or intelligence, definitely pick this book up.

The true story of the wrongful conviction of Rev. Thomas P. Bird, serving a life sentence for a murder he did not commit.

        Customer Reviews:

        2 out of 5 stars Guilty Bird.......2006-02-13

As a fellow pastor, I sought in this book an avenue of hope that Bird may have been framed. He wasn't. Thomas Bird killed his wife in cold blood, conspired to kill Marty Anderson, and probably was the trigger man. Racer, to his credit, included the dialogue between Bird and Darrel Carter that was caught on a hidden microphone. Bird sounded like a third class thug trying to cover his bases. The prosecutors could have hung Bird on that tape alone. Then note his post-murder behavior. Wouldn't a sane man who was innocent stay miles away from the femme fatale Lorna, who only spelled trouble? Not Bird, the "caring pastor." Instead he logs hundreds of personal calls to her, travels with her to different cities, and even admits to a sexual relationship with her. Why? To keep her story straight and aligned with his own concocted alibi. And what about those love letters??? Christian love? More like lust and passion, two of the oldest motives for murder.

What about the book? Dave Racer provides an exhaustive narrative that unfortunately slants the truth in Bird's favor (wasn't Racer hired by a friend of Bird to write this book?). But for those interested in the Bird case, I can think of worse things to do with your time than read this book.

        2 out of 5 stars Slanted View.......2004-06-19

I'm probably not the best person to write a review of this book, as I did not get to finish the entire book (interlibrary loan). But quite frankly, I wasn't sure I wanted to finish it. Yes, some parts were poorly written, and it did have a lot of detail. However, those weren't the parts of the book that bothered me. I thought the author's viewpoint was slanted. From the very beginning the author wrote about Lorna Anderson as a woman without virtue, a scarlet woman, etc. whereas, Tom Bird was a paradigm of virtue. And if he wasn't exactly that, his notes, conversations, etc. to Lorna Anderson could be easily explained so the author was still able to show Tom Bird in the best light possible. Lorna Anderson may be everything the author says she is, and more. But the very thing the author complained about (the prejudice of the movie about Tom Bird) is the exact same thing he has done in his book.

        4 out of 5 stars Almost excellent.......2003-11-14

CBS' mini-series, "Murder Ordained" makes us think that Tom Bird is a manipulating murderer, a real louse. But the movie is wrong.

Dave Racer's book lays out the case and allows the reader to make his or her decision. The detail can sometimes get tedious, but Racer wants us to see it all. Still, the story moves along remarkably well.

True, there are typos and punctuation problems, but anyone who reads the introduction will understand. It has nothing to do with the author's incredible ability to relate a very complicated story in a way the reader can understand.

True Crime readers need to read this book.

1 out of 5 stars bad beyond belief.......2003-11-01

For the past 20 years I've read an average of 40 books per year. This book is without a doubt the most poorly written I've ever read. I only hung on through its repetitious hundreds of pages because I was interested in the murders that happened in a familiar locale. Early on, Racer thanks his (volunteer, father?) proofreader. He should have sprung for a pro. The punctuation in this book is not to be believed; a third-grader could do better. Beyond being poorly written, the book is totally one-sided and defies logic. I think this guy has his own publishing company, which may explain how this sorry work ever got into print.

5 out of 5 stars Well Documented, Serious reading........2003-08-16

This book is a serious well documented Look at the trial
and background of a story that most of us got to
witness on the made for tv movie of the week.

It leaves us one to wonder if we have a completely innocent
        man behind bars?

a must reading for any one who is looking for the facts.

        well documented.

            Book Description

Kansas and western Missouri are astonishingly rich in birdlife. Located in the very center of the North American continent, the area is home to most of the eastern bird fauna and many of the western species, and even hosts occasional visitors from the far north. Over 400 species of birds have been recorded in Kansas alone, an abundance that places it among the top five birding states in the country.

Bird Finding in Kansas and Western Missouri is a guide to this rich mosaic of birdlife. Written for both resident and visiting birders, the book begins with an introduction to the region's avian diversity and to its eleven major biotic communities. Illustrated with 17 line drawings by renowned artist and ornithologist Robert Mengel, A Guide to Bird Finding also features 26 detailed maps, a checklist of birds of the region, and an annotated list of "Specialty Species." The book's main focus, though is on birding tours--75 of them. Meticulously described and thoroughly "road-tested," these tours lead down paved highways, dirt roads, and paths, past old cemeteries, around lakes, along creeks, into cities, and out onto the prairie, winding through the birding hotspots of Kansas and western Missouri.

With this new guide in hand, birders can tailor their expeditions to focus on the big picture, taking advantage of all the birding possibilities a particular location has to offer, or the small picture, searching out one or two especially challenging species. Zimmerman and Patti have provided information on road conditions and tour routes, and have also zeroed in on a few birding surprises--like Bobolinks next to saline marshes in central Kansas.

Among the many birding possibilities the book suggests are: a trip to the tallgrass prairie of the Flint Hills where Greater Prairie-chickens and Henslow's Sparrows can be seen; a tour of the Cimarron National Grassland, the best place in the U.S, to see Lesser Prairie-chickens; a tour of Missouri's Squaw Creek National Wildlife Refuge, the spectacular staging area for over 500,000 geese and other waterfowl; and a trip to Quivira National Wildlife Refuge and Cheyenne Bottoms, internationally significant wetlands that are an essential migration stopover for hundreds of species , particularly waterfowl and shorebirds, and even Whooping Cranes.

            5 out of 5 stars I loved it!.......2007-08-26

I am in Kansas and new to bird watching. I set up a Martin Hotel in my back yard, then a bird feeder... All kinds of birds I'd never seen before (Being from Arizona) started showing up. After watching some of their personalities emerge to me, I became more and more curious as to who these beautiful and fascinating creatures were. I ordered this book and got my answers! I love the way it is so easy to use, how it is listed by colors, which makes it exceptionally easy to find the bird you are looking for. If your an an advanced bird watcher, this probably isn't the book for you. But, if your new to this, as I am, this is the perfect starter book.
I love the little notes at the bottom of each page with some of the author's observations of that particular bird. Like the cow bird, now there is a bird who has parenthood down to a science. Lay the eggs in another birds nest (different species) and let them raise it! ;-). Get the book, for the price you can't go wrong and the photos are beautifully done.

            5 out of 5 stars Excellent resource!.......2007-06-27

Easily divided into colored sections so you have a basic starting place to determine the bird you're trying to identify. Great, clear photos.

5 out of 5 stars A great resource for the amature bird watcher.......2007-03-19

My husband and I have enjoyed using this book as "amature birdwatchers" - the orginization by color and size are great. The author also offers comparisons when you might be stumped. We've since purchased other books by Stan Tekiela such as Trees of Missouri (since there isn't yet a Trees of Kansas available) as well as bird guides, as gifts, for people in other states. It may not be as comprehensive as more experienced birdwatchers would like; however, it is a great resource for those of us peaking out the window at the feeder.

3 out of 5 stars Less comprehensive than I expected.......2006-03-27

This is a tiny book that has less information and fewer birds than I expected. Just looking out at my bird feeder, about half the birds I see can't be identified by looking at this book. I also don't like the classification system...if a bird is half black and half brown, should I look in the 'black' or 'brown' section of the book? I think this is intended to be a 'for dummies' level of book, which is fine because I am a complete novice bird watcher, but I still don't find that it gives me the information I'm looking for. I would like to see more variation within a bird type, rather than only see one photo and try to find a bird in real life that matches it.

            5 out of 5 stars Great resource.......2004-06-22

This is a terrific little book with the best photographs of birds I have seen in a field guide. Organized by color of bird, so a novice can figure out where to start to ID what he is looking at. Has basic info on each of the 115 most common Kansas birds. If male and female are different colors, then they are listed seperatly, each with a small inset photograph and page number of the mate.

                Book Description

Ranging from the unfamiliar to the famous--from the inconspicuous, plankton-sucking Elktoe Mussel to the majestic, soaring Bald Eagle--endangered or threatened plants and animals of Kansas continue to play a vital, although diminished, role in the state's ecology.

Providing, for the first time, easily accessible information for the professional naturalist and amateur nature lover alike, this guide highlights the habits and habitats of sixty plants and animals currently listed as endangered or threatened in Kansas and protected by state or federal law. The authors illuminate not only the common bond of these species--their precarious status--but also their widely varying routines, idiosyncrasies, and circumstances. All known Lake Scott Riffle Beetles in the world, they show, spend their lives in one spring area of Western Kansas while the nomadic Whooping Cranes alight only a night or two in the state's central and eastern swamplands during migration.

For each species--three plants, three mammals, nine birds, eight reptiles, ten amphibians, fourteen fishes, and thirteen invertebrates--the guide features a full-color photograph, standard common and current scientific name, range map, threatened or endangered species status, and information on appearance, size, breeding, habits, surroundings, food preference, and natural history. The authors also list possible causes of species reduction, from loss of habitat through land use change, water diversion, and pollution, to hunting and fishing practices and natural selection.

Richly illustrated and informative, this unique guide will be indispensable to anyone wanting to preserve the state's irreplaceable biological diversity.

This book is part of the Kansas Nature Guides series.

1 out of 5 stars Misleading product description.......2007-02-23

Was never a "paperback" but a "laminated" single sheet of paper, maybe.

Was disappointed to say the least.

1 out of 5 stars Not worth the $10.......2004-06-18

Amazon charges $3.99 shipping and this isn't much more than a laminated sheet of paper. (It could have been shipped in an envelope for under 40 cents) That makes it $10 and you'd be better off getting a real book. I'm going to send mine back.

                  Book Description

Fighting between pro- and antislavery factions began in the Kansas territory even before the official start of the Civil War in 1861. With conflict beginning upon the territory's bid for statehood and continuing until the end of the Civil War, "Bleeding Kansas" was the battleground for local militias and guerrilla fighters. Kansas historian Roy Bird explores the history of Kansas in the Civil War and describes the war's effects on the state and its residents. Civil War in Kansas also examines the roles played by William Clarke Quantrill, Jim Lane, "Red Leg" Charles Jennison, and Gen. James Blunt.

I was interested in seeing if it told of the 10th KS Inf in which some of my ancestors fought in and it did. The book is very nice. Do wish it had more photos in it of actual civil war photos rather than pencil drawings.

                  Book Description

When you think of birds, you think of songbirds--bluebirds, robins, bluejays, chickadees-and that group of birds, the passerines, is featured in Volume II of Birds in Kansas.

Of the 424 bird species that have been recorded in Kansas, 208 are passerines, commonly known as songbirds or, more accurately, perching birds. (Many so-called songbirds, like crows, have terrible voices and can't sing a note, but all of them can "perch.") They include most of the birds you'll see at your feeder, and many you won't: flycatchers, larks, swallows, jays and crows, titmice, wrens, thrushes, waxwings, wood warblers, blackbirds, tanagers, finches, and others.

All 208 species found in Kansas are discussed in Birds in Kansas, Volume II. Abundantly illustrated with 199 photographs and 208 range maps, this handbook provides the only comprehensive, current, and authoritative treatment of the songbirds in the state.

Written specifically for amateur birdwatchers and naturalists, both volumes of Birds in Kansas provide the reader with common and scientific names, distribution maps, photographs, and facts concerning reported occurrence, breeding habits, habitats, field marks (for identification), and food preferences. Volume I, published in 1989, covers over 200 species of ducks and geese, gulls, herons, woodpeckers, shorebirds, birds of prey, and other non-passerines. Volume II is devoted solely to the passerines.

                  4 out of 5 stars Excellent information.......2005-07-07

These are very good books for those who are looking for information on birds in Kansas. Each species has a page or more and includes a map that shows which counties the bird can be found in and which counties she nests in. The only thing keeping this from a 5-star rating is the black & white pictures. Recommended as it has every bird known to be in Kansas, unlike "Birds of Kansas: Field Guide" which is much smaller (pocket size) and has great pictures, but only 100 or so species.
