Medical dictionary.......2007-06-27
It is excellent for its size and weight. I couldnn't handle an unabridged medical dictionary.
Good buy!.......2007-01-24
I needed a medical dictionary for a class I was taking, but it didn't have to be new or all that comprehensive. This one was perfect, it cost me 1 penny! Even with the postage it was much cheaper than I could have bought it new.
Question: Any pronunciation guide for the entries?.......2000-12-31
How come no one in the reviews ever giving any info about the pronunciation guide used in the Dictionary? Can someone tell us if the IPA (International Phonectic Aiphabet)or KK phonetic symbols are used in this dictionary to help reader to know the pronunciation of each symbols? I may give it a higher rating when I get some answers.
Very handy!.......2000-06-04
I ordered this book for my medical billing practice because I needed a smaller paperback book for quick reference. Every definition that I have needed to look up has been in this book. It is very simple to follow and is easy to use. I would recommend this book to any who will look up words on a daily basis and does not want to have to lug out a 20 pound hardback dictionary!
A good, inexpensive general medical reference.......1998-09-25
This is a great medical dictionary for those who want a comprehensive reference and not spend too much money. We recommend this book for students in our medical vocational classes.

The Fourth Turning continues the project of mapping out the place of generations in history, a project begun in the authors' earlier books Generations and 13th Gen. If millennial fever takes hold, The Fourth Turning may be only the first of an impending wave of pseudo-scholarly tracts prognosticating future (but imminent!) doom as we collectively close the books on this millennium. Those expecting a serious or dry tome might be put off by the authors' taste for bulleted text and catchy phrasings, but can you blame these guys for wanting to make impending peril as exciting as possible? After all, they think we are headed toward "events on par with the Revolution, the Civil War, or World War II" in the next 20 years. Mixing solid understanding of present generational divisions, with some fairly broad generalizations, Strauss and Howe promise to move from history to prophecy. Fans of Future Shock, Megatrends, or Powershift will be familiar with the authors' style of writing and not at all put off by the book's reach or style. Their take on history provides an intriguing (if not always reliable) lens through which to view the past, present, and maybe even the future.
Book Description
First came the postwar High, then the Awakening of the '60s and '70s, and now the Unraveling. This audacious and provocative book tells us what to expect just beyond the start of the next century. Are you ready for the Fourth Turning?
Strauss and Howe will change the way you see the world--and your place in it. In The Fourth Turning, they apply their generational theories to the cycles of history and locate America in the middle of an unraveling period, on the brink of a crisis. How you prepare for this crisis--the Fourth Turning--is intimately connected to the mood and attitude of your particular generation. Are you one of the can-do "GI generation," who triumphed in the last crisis? Do you belong to the mediating "Silent Majority," who enjoyed the 1950s High? Do you fall into the "awakened" Boomer category of the 1970s and 1980s, or are you a Gen-Xer struggling to adapt to our splintering world? Whatever your stage of life, The Fourth Turning offers bold predictions about how all of us can prepare, individually and collectively, for America's next rendezvous with destiny.
Customer Reviews:
chilling predictions are now coming true.......2007-07-28
This book was written 10 years ago but the predictions it makes are shockingly true. We are now seeing the future in the young people we know. Highly recommended.
historical astrology.......2007-01-22
a horrid mix consisting of one part historical riffing, one part astrology, and one part interesting correlation of data patterns. The combined effect is little more than a condescending attempt at palm reading.
That being said, some of the predictions were spot on but ultimately the suggestions as to how to deal with the looming catastrophe has us all being good little docile unquestioning citizens. It's sad that people take this tripe seriously.
I would suggest the book 'Worldchanging: A User's Guide for the 21st Century' instead for some real-world solutions to real-world problems.
6 stars!.......2007-01-07
I have read and re-read this book over and over. I always find something new. One of the most important books in its genre in the last 40 years. Amazing scholarship and thought went into this. Anyone interested in where we have been and where we are now should read. I hope they are writing something as a followup because this book pre-dates 9/11 and therefore is a bit dated in that way. But still stands up well 6 years later.
Troubling but crucially important.......2006-08-12
Strauss and Howe offer an analysis of the past 500 years of Western civilization, through the lens of generational dynamics. They are repeating (and condensing) some of their prior work in Generations, and putting more emphasis on our present reality. The authors posit that there is a four-generation cycle that has repeated itself time and time again over the past five centuries. Every fourth generation, there is a massive upheaval -- the American Revolution, the Civil War, and World War II being the most recent examples. They argue that we are due for the next massive crisis by about 2020 to 2025, and that all the signs of disintegration of society we see around us are patterns that have existed in the periods prior to the massive upheavals of the past. I found this book to be a page-turner; I found it incredibly difficult to put down.
If you're a church leader, read this book in conjunction with Mike Regele's book The Death of the Church, which is grounded, in large part, on the work of Strauss and Howe.
Family is the only ultimate safety net for both political and economic upheaval.......2006-02-06
The fourth turning prediction suggests a final abandon of futurist promises of social security, Medicare, and elder benefits. These New Deal projects will lie in the dust bins of history. Today's advice is to prepare for both economic and political upheaval. The federal government will need to simplify and reduce, size and scope. All levels of government need to prune legal, regulatory, and professional thickets that stymie institutional change. Government needs to thin out procedural requirements that could delay or weaken emergence measures in a crisis. Communities should improve their own functional support for schools, housing infrastructure (sewer, power, water, roads), transportation, safety, justice, social service from their own local resources and stop depending upon federal fund assistance. Personal responsibility for the future health care and income means people, today, should begin to save intensely. The saving must be signficant increase reaching 20-25 percent of their incomes. The author believes a consumption tax will benefit the middle class. A consumption tax would not tax income creating a wealth creation sphere. However, money is not the only solution. Bottomline, the family will be the ultimate safety net against disaster because of its never infinite resource capability and flexibility. At the same time, as economic hardship increases, one can expect government subsidies to vanish and new trade barriers to arise. Corporate bailouts caused from consumer spending declines will be less and less likely.
Prior to the fourth turning, the nation will be more affluent than other generations, possess more technology, encompass more diverse populations, and command more powerful weapons. This is a repeat cycle pattern characteristic of all fourth turning patterns. The boomer generation is very vulnerable and the thinness in personal savings alarming and just as they will need more benefits and support from the government, at a time, when less and less funds will be available. The unsustainable public promises will move Boomers into a devalued society state as confidence and trust decline. Confidence declines as larger groups of people realize the government is fiscally overcommitted spending beyond its capability, for elder care and debt service. The government does not have unenough resource to support a Welfare state, an illusionary promise to begin with from its inception. The turn about will be abrupt and sharp; the Boomers will be shocked, as benefits disappear. The Millennials will be faced with new debt, heavy tax burdens, and two tier wage structures reducing money in their pockets, money that would be used for consumption. The new youth will struggle to find employment.
A sudden spark will catalyze a crisis mood and in the crisis political and economic trust will implode. Plausible sparks are: a tax rebellion among the states causing treasury bills to be suspended; a house to house search for the enemy sphere leading to a national strike and bringing political and economic instability, whereupon, foreign capital decides to flee; a budget impasse which threatens to shutdown government operations, whereupon, the dollar and bonds plummet, as Wall Street panics; a widespread disease triggering control measure and the implementation of martial law where individual rights are preempted and duty required; and the formation of an confederate relationship between Russia and Iran causing Gold and Oil prices to soar. The initial spark will trigger a chain reaction of unyielding responses making debt repayment desperate, civic decay promise seem a disillusion, and US economic instability causing global disorder. Increased amounts of distrust will cause a downward spiral of failing confidence and remorse for things done wrong. The unraveling will support the trend towards social complexity.
A real hardship will beset the land: class conflict, race intolerance, national constitution rights waiver, and the sorrows of an empire. The very survival of the nation will be at stake. As the catastrophe escalates the social fabric, it will become less certain with increased possibilities of civil violence, geographical crackups, acceptance of authoritarian rule, and war - total war where the upward ratchet in technology will threaten extreme humanitarian destruction with a willingness to use it. The focus on survival means increased military spending and public investment in large projects. Armed conflict usually occurs around the climax of a crisis and those involve are willing to use these weapons, the most destructive weapons will be deployed.
Market devaluation will cause a severe drop in the market price. The drop in price will have preliminary short term trend, go through a period of prosperity, and then move into a long term trend of contract. The exact degree of pain caused from the recession or depression is not predictable, it will be severe. The short term correct will be horrifically painful as assets devalue and give alarm to Millennials seeking employment and boomer attempting to maintain production. The alarm will extend to multiple generations overlapped in the workforce.
However, at pinnacle of despair, the possible of social rebirth will emerge, as the remnant of the old social order disintegrates. A new civic order is predicted to emerge. Old political alliances will be broken. The Millennials will begin to shape politics that shift away from the individual rights and towards public duties; they will seek unionism and corporationism. It is also very possible that partisan two party systems will dissolve. The new regime will enthrone itself will an increased level of public authority and demand private sacrifice. America will become more isolated and abandon both global democracy and multinational diplomacy. Businesses will become more cartelized and workers more unionized.
Eventually, the economy will recover experiencing unprecedented levels of efficiency and production levels. A new renewed hope with a strong resolve on what to do emerge and the Millennials will know what to do. The American spirit will return. The great civil entropy will be reversed and trust reborn, as a new civil order is established and a new social contract will take root. Prosperity will blossom and the new economic society will enter into a new gate of history.
Another real and believable vision of the new civic order is the establishment of Zion, a city of God, as a plausible social order. The quality of Zion sets as a ideal a civic order where there is no poor among them. Zion is characterized by the building of massive projects to benefit mankind and utilize new technology to increase production. Lastly, Zion is a fortress where no weapon can prosper against it, it is a fortress of safety and the introduction of an era of peace where none will go against Zion because it is terrible.

Customer Reviews:
Leadership Development.......2005-03-23
Bob Moore does an excellent job of bringing to life the issues facing top leaders today and what needs to be done differently to help them achieve their vision faster. Its filled with concrete and realistic steps toward gaining alignment of senior teams and to develop managers and supervisors in a way that touches every person in the organization. I am now distributing the book to participants during my leadership development work with corporations. Executives find the book a quick and easy format for stimulating their thinking and creating dialogue to create a work environment where people want to come to work and do their best every day.
Coaching based on reality.......2005-03-01
Among the many elements of Bob Moore's book that struck me was the his recognition that to help a manager improve, the coach needs to work on the manager's weaknesses and show him/her how to employ his strengths to advantage. All too often coaches work on those attributes which either the boss or the individual has identified. But what about the manager's reports and peers. Their perception can be just as important as the individual's supervisor who may not see as much as the others. Afterall, the manager's ability is partly dependent on his team and how he stimulates them. Therefore Moore's recognition that some type of an evaluation before embarking on coaching is most important to avoid working on attributes that don't need fixing and concentratig on those that do.
Consultant-in-a-Book.......2005-01-06
In today's turbulent employment environment, top talent is at a premium. Good people are hard to find...and even harder to keep. Employers who attract, optimize, and retain top talent will have a substantial competitive advantage over those who fail to pay attention to their most important resource.
The key is leadership. Period. End of story. Leadership effectiveness spells the difference between organizations that succeed, meet and exceed their objectives, and consistently stay at the top of their game. If you're a leader-in any kind of an organization, you would be well-advised to engage a consultant to work with your senior team and other people responsible for goal achievement. You'd be wise to hire a Certified Management Consultant who specializes in leadership effectiveness.
Alternatively, you could bring in a Master Certified Coach who works with individuals to help them achieve their best performance. This kind of highly competent coach enables senior leaders and other key individuals to fulfill their potential so their entire organization benefits from their effectiveness.
Or you could take advantage of the qualities of both these professionals rolled into one: BobMoore, CMC, MCC. With 30 years of experience in helping people and organizations become highly effective, he's an ideal choice to bring focus, energy, and technique to your team. Now you can get Bob Moore in a small package...in his advice-filled book on how to invigorate leaders at all levels, and the people who work for them.
Understandably, Moore focuses on the people side of the business. That's the area that holds the most exposure, the most risk, and the most opportunity. Having good people on your team isn't enough. They must want to be there and they must want to perform at high levels. Leadership. What can you-as a leader or future leader-do to inspire ordinary people to do the extraordinary?
Moore's solution is presented in seven keys. As you read his book, you'll learn from a down-to-earth consultant who's "been there, done that." He tells it like it is, no punches pulled. He "talks" like a consultant, a coach, an advisor, a friend. You'll feel like a favored client, learning about diagnosis, practice, and getting results. At the end of each chapter, your coach will present the key points to "get,: to remember. Nope, you're not done. Moore will challenge you to develop an action plan, expecting you to identify the principal concept you got from the chapter and how you will begin applying your new knowledge within the next 48 hours. Yes, this is an action-oriented tool. You'll get assignments to complete to help you lock in the learning.
A reading list, bibliography, and a questionnaire will help jump-start your results.
This review is based on the second edition of this title. The reviewer is author of the business best-seller, "Keeping Good People."

Great constellation guide.......2007-05-16
This book is very useful to the amateur astronomer since it contains much essential information about all of the 88 constellations and has clear, readable maps. There are also some fine photographs of outstanding celestial objects in the more interesting regions of the sky. The book does not cover the mythology, which is already featured in many other books, but it is excellent as an observing guide. The charts are a great companion for stargazing with binoculars and a small telescope. By all means add this book to your astronomy library-- even if you own other books about the constellations.
Excellent!.......2006-12-16
I bought this book used largely on the advice of the recommendations. They were not wrong. This book gives a grand tour of the skies in a comprehensive and thoughtful manner, very thoroughly documented with three perspectives:1) actual photographs of the constellations to train your eyes or stop hop from, 2)thoughtful descriptions and explanations 3) a comprehensive star atlas that easily rivals so-called star atlases such as Norton's and Collins, etc. I coulnd't find any difference in detail between much more expensive star-atlases and this book (maybe I didn't carefully enough). In fact, the photographs were so detailed (maybe not as lovely as Akira Fuji's), that many showed details well past the normal 7.5 magnitude stars and you could use these for star-hopping (although for a beginner, this is quite difficult until you train your eye). This isn't, however, quite as easy for the beginner to use as say Turn left at Orion, but I believe most can move on from that book within a few months whereas one cannot say that of Sanford's book.
Excellent beginners guide that should be re-released !.......2000-11-03
I managed to get a translated copy in Swedish of this book, "Stjärnboken" in a used-books store in Stockholm. The charts by Wil Tirion are excellent. Clear and accurate but not overly simplified. Sanford's narration is very pleasant with a good balance between the different DSO's that are interesting for people with different equipment. What really impressed me even more are the full colour pictures of *every* constellation in the night-sky. A tremendous effort, which provides great help in learning the constelations and the relative positions of deep-sky objects. I can't understand why this book is out of print. Someone should buy the rights for this book and publish it again. If you find a used-copy, grab one for me too =).
The BEST Constellation Observation Guide I've Seen!!!!!!!.......1998-09-06
It's truly amazing that this book is no longer in print. How is this possible? I have found it to be the best general constellation guide for naked eye, binocular or telescopic observing that I have seen. It provides very good star charts and photos of each constellation and summarises the most prominent objects (multiple and variable stars, deep sky objects, etc) in each constellation, providing locations (on star chart and coordinates), basic information and data on each object. I take it with me on every observation session. The book is well organised, easily understood and its setup/content caters for the beginner, intermediate and even more advanced observer. I believe it would take a long time for a beginner to "outgrow" (if it's even possible) the usefulness of this book. I believe it's a must have in the astronomical library. Again, I ask..."Why is this book no longer being published!?!"
David, Astronomy Enthusiast
Probably the best general observing guide, period........1997-11-21
Sanford's book is without doubt the best general observing guide to the constellations I have ever used, and I've used a lot of them. His star maps are excellent. He provides concise summaries of all the most interesting objects in each constellation, and he covers both hemispheres. I have been looking for additional copies of this wonderful, out-of-print book for a year.

Customer Reviews:
A great book on a new remote sensing technique.......2002-04-02
This volume provides an excellent advanced introduction to the radio occultation remote sensing technique based on signals from the Global Positioning System (GPS). It consists of papers authored by leaders in their respective fields, and covers many of the atmospheric and ionospheric applications that have been investigated so far. It also covers non-GPS instruments on COSMIC, but this is not my area. The COSMIC constellation of six satellites is planned to launch in 2005.

Book Description
Seeing the Constellations is a reference book for amateur astronomers. It contains, for each constellation, a star chart showing the Bayer labels, a table for many of the stars in the constellation, along with their positions and magnitudes, and a table of the deep-sky objects in the constellation, with relevant observational data. Facing pages provide unique year-long graphs that show when the constellation is visible in the sky, allowing the user to quickly determine whether a given constellation can be seen, and when the best time to see it will be.
A major feature is an included CD-ROM containing a PC program [unique as far as we can determine] that produces a list of what deep-sky objects are visible in the sky at a user-determined time and place, for any location on the Earth. It produces a convenient and (disposable!) list that the user can take to the telescope for an observing session.
