Book Description
Back problems affect more people over longer periods of time than any other physical condition—and they are unsurpassed for testing the patience of both doctors and sufferers. A revolutionary program—Back Power—has been created by an occupational health physician and a chiropractor. Together, Imrie and Barbuto challenge the notion of ``physician versus chiropractor,'' bringing an interdisciplinary approach to the problems associated with the diagnosis, treatment and management of back pain—with resounding success.
Customer Reviews:
This really works!.......2001-07-21
Over ten years ago, my former company hired Dr. Imrie to reduce the back injury incidents at their manufacuring plant. Having suffered thru the pain, legal problems, financial problems .... etc., I approached the invitation with skepticism. I followed this program with desperation as nothing else was working. It is not an instant fix, rather it is life commitment (kind of like brushing your teeth everyday). The book explains why your back is hurting, what can be done about it, what can't be done about it, and how to overcome the obstacle of debilitating pain and go on to lead a healthy active life. It takes time (8 min. a day) but it leads to an injury resistant back. Companies who are looking for looking for Occupational Injury prevention should take a second look at this program. I am noting for the record, although having met Dr. Imrie and particpated in his workshop, I am not affiliated or in anyway connected to or profiting from this book. On a personal note, I think it is really funny and quite sad to try to help someone mired in the cycle of pain and debilitation along with the accompanying "quick fixes", pain reliever addiction, alcoholism, self-pity and on and on..., to try to help them with the techniques this book offers and hear them say, "I can't do that!" The difference between this book and the other many books I purchased on back injuries is not the exercises, they are all very similar. Rather Dr. Imrie focuses on the HOW to do them. This one very simple technique makes all the difference between effectiveness and just doing exercises by rote with no results.

Book Description
The story of the Gen. Nelson M. Walker troopship began in 1997, when military artifact historian Art Beltrone first visited the "Ghost Fleet" on the James River in Virginia to assist with research for the World War II movie, The Thin Red Line. Once aboard the aging vessel, Beltrone found crowded troop compartments littered with hundreds of graffiti-marked bunk canvases, bulletin boards, and other historic artifacts left not by WWII troops headed for war in the Pacific, but by soldiers going to war in Southeast Asia a generation later. Beltrone's discovery led to extensive research about the Walker, which was first commissioned in 1945 and saw service in WWII, the Korean War, and Vietnam. Many of the artifacts, thanks to the work of the Beltrones, have been rescued from the ship and are now relocated in museums throughout the U.S., including the new National Museum of the United States Army, the Oakland Museum of California, and the National Museum of American History at the Smithsonian Institution. Vietnam Graffiti: Messages from a Forgotten Troopship, combines photographs of the ship today, along with historical photos, and a gallery of many of the canvases found aboard. Profiles on individuals who left graffiti and were contacted for their stories are also included.

Memories.......2005-08-22
This is a "must read" for anyone who was ever on a troopship. The photos and background information will bring back a flood of memories from an era that ended about 35 years ago.
A valuable glimpse of our Vietnam past.......2005-01-25
This book rediscovers for me one of the most haunting visual memories of my Vietnam experience. My first experience with Vietnam graffiti was in 1968 on a troop flight from Oakland to Saigon via Japan. When we stopped in Japan for several hours most of us made for the "heads" located in a large terminal. These toilets were constructed of plywood walls which we covered with graffiti, tons of it. Some of it was what you would expect, i.e., "Here I sit brokenhearted. . ." and other simple jokes but the majority of it was the heartfelt thoughts and philosophy of men on their way to war and the possiblity of no return. And I'm sure much of what I read was written by men who did not return. I have often recalled those plywood walls and their inscriptions. I always regretted not photographing them. I have made three return trips to Vietnam and travelled all over the country and created and chronicled those travels at a website. Those plywood walls remain one of the most haunting and memorable sights of my Vietnam experience. I thought that sort of human insight to this war on that personal level was lost forever. That is until I stumbled across this book, Vietnam Graffiti: Messages from a Forgotten Troopship. Imagine being on a troop ship for three weeks while bound for Vietnam and the war. One of your only personal spaces on a ship is your bunk. As you lay in your bunk you would write your thoughts on the canvas bunk above you. The authors have rescued these canvas bunks from the scrap heap and have given us a tremendous insight into the human level of men going to war. How many other troop ships contain this type of history. That the authors had the foresight to rescue these pieces when they were on the troop ship scouting locations for a movie. I am very happy to add this book to my Vietnam collection. I've over 500 books on the war and this is definitely on the top 10 list of books that define that war.
Book Description
This new paperback expands on the techniques covered in Shaping Wood a title in the enormously successful Complete Illustrated Guides series. It covers joinery relating to 18th century furniture styles, as well as the demanding techniques required to complete ornate period pieces. Turning and carving, as well as building accurately, are all included in a highly visual format. Anyone who loves period details and longs to create them will want this book. 300 color photos and drawings are featured.
Customer Reviews:
Very good!.......2006-05-16
I am surprised at the low book review. This is one of the best teaching books I have read. Lonnie Bird is an artist at conveying woodworking concepts. This is not a step by step how to guide to a completed project. Every detail that is covered is very well covered. I have both of the Lonnie Bird books and believe they complement each other. I highly reccomend this book and this author! If you want a good step by step book on Period Furniture try: Glen Huey's "Building Period Furniture" Both of these books are excellent. See my review under this book on Amazon.I have bought many books that are barely worth taking home. These two books are worth more than they cost! The printing and pictures in This book are superior as are all others I have read by Taunton press.
Details Add Value.......2004-07-10
This is a valuable aid in making details. Another reviewer states that 80% of the book is in another book by Bird. This might be a bit of an over statement - no matter if just 20% is new material the book is worth it. I own both of the books he addresses - I noticed the duplication right away. The real question is "will this book make you a better period furniture maker?" I am 57 years old - own every tool required to make period furiture - hold a Masters certification from Marc Adams School of Woodworking - have taken course work with some of the top people in the field - I am now working on a Philidelphia Low Boy and am wooking with Allan Breed (instructor) - and this book is helpful and even insightful. I know at least four of the eighteen of us in class have purchased this book.
Don't buy if you own Complete Guide to Shaping Wood.......2004-02-28
If you already own Lonnie Bird's Complete Illustrated Guide to Shaping Wood you will be extremely disappointed with this book. It seemed that 80% was duplicate material. The book descriptions says that this book expands on the techniques covered in Shaping Wood. To me, it looked like nothing more than a page for page copy.
Book Description
This is a re-issue of Sloane's classic folksy history of barn folklore, architecture, and history, which has been out of print for twenty years. "Eric Sloane's An Age of Barns" is filled with fabulous black-and-white illustrations from this great American artist. Covering all types of American and Canadian barns and everything associated with them-implements and tools, hex signs, silos, out buildings, hinges, barn raising, and more-"Eric Sloane's An Age of Barns" is a spectacular album tribute to this important facet of our architecture and agriculture. This book is sure to once again become a collector's item.
Customer Reviews:
A loving eye for detail.......2007-04-25
Sloane's books capture the romanticism of the past better than any picture books, and that is certainly true for his An Age of Barns. The beautiful line drawings range from evocative perspectives to working sections, giving you a good idea of how these barns worked. There are Shaker round barns, traditional gambrel barns, Amish barn raisings and a wide variety of outbuildings associated with the early American farmstead. He lovingly focuses on hinge details, stairs and ventilation openings. Sloane's eye never missed a detail, and for anyone who loves old barns this is the book to get.
Nice book, but not Sloane's best.......2007-01-11
This has some interesting history of early barns, especially those of New England. Drawings are well done, as usual. If you are interested in barns west of the Mississippi look elsewhere.
I have a barn.......2006-09-26
and I understand that barn so much better now that I have read this book. Sloane gives a brief overview of the history of barns, regional types of barns, and even the tools to raise a barn. A lovely book.
Eric Sloane-The Master Illustrator of Rural America.......2005-10-08
When Eric Sloane wrote this book in the 1950's, the United States had already made the transition from being an agricultural nation into an industrial society. Fortunately, there were still plenty of examples of America's rural past scattered along the backroads and other forgotten areas of the nation's countryside. Sloane spent many years, seeking out these historic relics so that he could study and sketch them. The result is whole series of books that chronicle America's historic material culture. This book focuses on barns.
What makes an Eric Sloane book so unforgetable are the black and white sketches. If you are a visual learner who believes a good drawing is worth a thousand words, Eric Sloane is the author for you. By no means is this an academic study of the different barn styles that existed in the United States. Instead this book is a collection of beautiful drawings that can help the reader understand how barns were built and what they were used for. This is a magical book. If you like it, you will have many hours of pleasure seeking out and reading Eric Sloane's other books. Highly recommended. A great value.

The Woodwright's Shop meets Eric Sloan.......2001-04-16
You will not be able to put this book down! The incredible richness of the information and the quality of both the pen and ink drawings and the narative are outstanding.
This book really brings together the why and how of early American architecture: It tells the story of how the richness of wood resources in early America affected the development of tool technology which in turn contributed to the evolution of building techniques that were uniquely American.
If you like Eric Sloan, or historical woodworking in general, you are going to love C. Keith Wilbur.
Book Description
This is the first-hand account of a young couple who in 1936 challenged Wright to produce a decent house for $5,000. Wright responded with the innovations—floor heating, flat roof, concrete floor, solid walls, grouping of utilities, carport, seclusion from the street but openness to a garden through banks of door windows—that made their house the revolutionary “Usonia Number One.”
Within five years the Jacobs moved to the country, where Wright designed the “Solar Hemicycle,” which featured a windfoil design and the passive solar construction that became the prototype for such buildings. The 89 illustrations show the construction and important details of both houses.

Breaking Architectural Rules - Building Usonia 1 !.......2000-06-24
This personal memoir of building two Frank Lloyd Wright houses is intriguing. Herbert and Katherine Jacobs offer a frank, honest account of their experiences. I have read this book twice. I think the glimpse of the personality of Frank Lloyd Wright is the most fascinating part of this book. You comprehend what a "pain" he was to work with and then you realize that he had the big picture and was trying to create a "timeless work of art" and the Jacobs' were just "not getting it". They didn't seem to understand that to make things work out correctly they needed to follow the details of the plans. Parts of the book, including chapters 18 and 19 are a trip down memory lane for them and offer the reader little information about their building experience. The black and white photos which illustrate this book were shot from 1936 to 1959. This is not a coffee table book like 50 Favorite Furnishings by Frank Lloyd Wright , and 50 Favorite Rooms by Frank Lloyd Wright by Diane Maddex. This book makes me curious about the famous architect whose style is timeless. An architect who could design a house of beauty and style for the common man -"the Usonia".

Building with Frank Lloyd Wrigth - an illustrated memoir.......2000-06-22
This is an an excellent book, written by the owners on the construction of their two Wright house designs - Jacob I & Jacobs II Solar Hemicycle. Each chapter outlines the process of design, construction drawings , materials selection and construction itself, Owner built by the owners - to save money- it is full of b & w photos of each stage, and some of the plans. The book illustrates how the simple plans are put into action and reveal the intricate structural solutions that Wright developed. For the architect in you, you will mullover the photos and plans working out in you own mind how this was put together. Both extraordinary designs for their time, this book will inspire you to have a home like them.

During the golden age of English country house entertaining, from the death of Prince Albert in 1861 to the outbreak of World War I, invitations passed back and forth among members of the aristocracy. Barstow brings to life the personalities and lifestyle
Customer Reviews:
An absolutely delightful book.......2004-11-18
Like all of Ms. Barstow's books, this is a well-researched, well-written study of a fun and interesting topic.
SHe chronicles the rise and fall of the Country House party, from the Georgians to the post World War period, describing the who, what, when, where, and why of it all. This edition is also filled with pictures, which really adds to the story: it is always more interesting to be able to see what the author is talking about.
This would be an invaluable book for anyone who reads fiction from the period... Austen, Bronte, James, Trollope, etc... and wants to find out more about the social conventions of an even that these authors considered to be a given. It's also a great book for anyone interested in social history of the English, particularly the upper classes.
An excellent, expert source.......2001-07-18
Ms. Barstow wrties an authoritative, well-researched handbook that is a must-have for anyone interested in high-society Victorian and Edwardian England. She details every aspect of the country house party- from the different types of parties to the habits of those attending them to the types of houses and the servants who ran them. It's an excellent resource for those even mildly interested in the subject.
Though it's rich with information, I found it very easy to read, unlike other books on this subject. Ms. Barstow interspersed the text with rare pictures that really bring to life the words on the page.
