Book Description
The West Texas frontier--the area encompassing the region stretching from Fort Worth to the Caprock, from Palo Duro Canyon to the San Saba River--has been a crossroads of humanity for thousands of years. Each group of humans who trekked across its sun-drenched prairies had to contend with the challenges of life in an area that has always been a climatic, geographical, political, and cultural borderland. In addressing these challenges, the people of the frontier developed perseverance, toughness, and determination--all necessities for life on the Texas frontier.
This book tells the epic story of this region and its many transitions throughout the centuries. It traces the struggles and triumphs of many groups as they tried to tame the region for their own purposes. Early humans hunted mammoths and other game in the region. Then came the Jumanos following the great bison herds, then the Apaches, the Comanches, the Spaniards, and the Texans. By 1845, with Texas' entrance into the United States, more formal efforts to tame the frontier brought forts and soldiers. Cattlemen and their herds shared the plains with the buffalo and the Plains Indians.
Battles and ambushes, justice and injustice defined the struggle for the next several decades. The military abandoned the region during the Civil War, only to return with force upon its completion. The vast postwar expansion of the cattle industry and the systematic slaughter of the buffalo herds ensured that Americans would claim the region permanently and that the Plains Indians' dominance of the frontier had come to an end. By 1880 barbed wire, windmills, railroads, and towns demonstrated that the frontier had been permanently transformed.

Great book for history of western Texas.......2007-02-15
Handy size, smallish like books of yore, well written general history with some information not seen elsewhere...wonderful maps showing relative locations of the various forts and settlements. Broad brush painted historical accounts of western Texas and the people, places therein mainly around 1850s thru 1890s. Good info on cattle trails, the bison slaughter, Fort Griffin, J. Conrad's store at Griffin / the Flats. Excellant overall view of the Red River war, the tribes, chiefs, who led which tribal group, the generals, thier outlooks.
Nice reference book for the library on the old west of Texas. Well designed book, great writers!

wild west reader.......2007-01-22
A small book on the general history of West texas. The information in this book will test your taste buds for more history on Texas, which is a sign of a good book. Because of this book,I bought more books on Texas from the biographies at the end of the book.
Two Profs, One great Book.......2006-05-11
This is a wonderful way to read about the history of West Texas and learn in a fun read. It has been a fun book to read and was hard to put down. There is a lot of history that has not been revealed until I read this book and got an understanding of how life differed in different places through out the state of Texas. The two authors help to the flow of the book, to make one great adventure of West Texas!
The true story of the Texas frontier from the 1700s to 1880.......2004-10-10
The collaborative work of Robert F. Pace (Chair of the Department of History, McMurry University, Abilene, Texas) and Donald S. Frazier (Professor of History, McMurry University, Abilene, Texas), Frontier Texas: History Of A Bordland To 1880 is the true story of the Texas frontier from the 1700s to 1880. From the Comanches who called it home, to the influence of the Spanish, the press of settlements, fallout from the Civil War, the eradication of the buffalo and the settlements that would transform the frontier forever, and much more, Frontier Texas is an amazing journey through time, illustrated with occasional black-and-white pictures, maps and photographs. A highly accessible history for lay readers and serious students alike.

Book Description
European domination and transformation of colonized societies in Africa and the Caribbean has inspired a great deal of writing. Phyllis Taoua propounds a revisionist synthesis of the French colonial project, illustrating how writers from Africa, the Caribbean, and France developed avant-garde programs in dialog with one another. This provocative reassessment of canonical works by Aime Cesaire, Mongo Beti, Sony Labou, and others, deliberately challenges models of cultural freedom predicated on outmoded notions of cultural purity. A focus on avant-gardes and anti-colonialism highlights the antagonism inherent in colonial society, illustrating modes of cross-cultural innovation developed as forms of protest. What emerges is an interpretive model of dynamic interaction in which actors on both sides of the colonial divide participated and were transformed as a result. Written in clear, jargon-free prose that both students and specialists will appreciate, this is the first book in the Studi

Solidly above average........2007-05-24
Not a GREAT Star Trek story, but a solidly above average one; decent plot, good characterization, good pacing, competently written. Moderately amusing plot twist to solve the main issue. Nothing spectacular, but well above the mid-point for the genre.
STNG #36 Into the Nebula - An unexpected hero!.......2003-11-08
Strangely enough, this was the last Star Trek title released by this author. This is especially disconcerting when taking into consideration that Gene DeWeese could write such an outstanding novel that entails Data's cat Spot becoming the hero of the novel! I found the author's writing style to be very fast paced and highly intriguing, lending to a very quick read.
The cover art for this novel is pretty much standard fare for the time in which it was published.
The premise:
The Enterprise encounters a strange nebular dust while exploring an unknown region of space. Within this nebular cloud they discover a planet called Krantin, where "all" life on the planet is dying. After a series of explosions and a ship disappearing into thin air, Captain Picard and crew begin to believe there is another group that is behind the destruction.
The leader of the planet believes the Enterprise and her crew are behind the plot against them and has the away team arrested. As time is running out Data and believe it or not, Spot must find a way to save their crewmates and the planet.
This is a highly intriguing and fun STNG novel to read and I highly recommend it to all fans of the Star Trek fiction genre. {ssintrepid}
ST-TNG: Into the Nebula.......2003-04-20
Star Trek-The Next Generation: Into the Nebula written by Gene DeWeese is a well-written action-adventure book. The star in this book is Spot, Data's cat. If you like cats and are a cat person you'll love the Star Trek adventure.
This book is an ongoing space adventure as the Enterprise and her crew are on a routine exploring mission. When the Enterprise encounters some strange nebular dust. Upon further investigation, a planet known as Krantin is discovered, but something is unusual as the flora and fauna are dying and the Enterprise crew starts to investigate as to the cause.
In this story Data must find a way to save the Enterprise crew from certain disaster, but time is running out... as worlds are being destroyed Data is the only hope... but Spot plays a stellar role in this book. The book was exciting to read and kept my intrest and I just loved Spot's roll.
This book was good entertainment and was fun to read.
Into the Boredom of Uninterestingness.......2001-03-06
An uninteresting, totaly predictaple plot, the same kind of ending (if not worse...), no character development... This wasn't one of the best books, but it held fairly well with good writing, an interesting idea (although poorly handled), and 'screentime' for many characters, including the greatly ignored cat, Spot. It's worth one read, I think, but nothing you'll remember later.
A Definate biggie.......1999-04-21
A great book. The two parallel universes really kept me confused for a while. And Spot, cute as ever(esp. if you're a cat person like me)totally steals the show. One of the great ones.Recommended.

Book Description
Here is a unique and fascinating reference book for every serious deep-sky observer! Entries for each of more than 500 deep-sky objects provide far more than the usual astronomical data - they also detail, in every case, the most interesting facts. Physical factors, astrophysical information, evolution, unusual features, the list is endless. The objects are all listed in NGC order, which were originally assigned in approximate order of location from west to east, convenient for reference because objects that can be seen on a given night will occur within a few pages of each other in the book. Astronomers can now get an insight into exactly what they are looking at, to add a new level of insight and enjoyment to deep-sky observing.
Customer Reviews:
A guide for the knowledgeable astronomer.......2005-02-08
At last. A Guide to telescopically observable deep-sky objects that also contains astrophysical information about each one all in one book.
This could replace hours of cross-referencing a variety of astronomical source books.
Especially handy for any owner of today's GoTo telescope, it is also useful for the starhopper, as it contains chart numbers for a couple popular star atlases likely to be used by amateur astronomers.
Other nearby objects are often only mentioned in the text for each object, so the book actually covers more than just 500 objects.
If I can fault the book at all, it is the lack of small-scale finder charts for some of the objects that are in crowded fields of objects. You will have to have charts of some sort to make sense of the fields in which these objects lie. Perhaps in a second edition.
There are many books for the amateur who wishes to expand beyond the basic 500 object lists, but there is a dearth of observing guides for the scientifically up-to-date amateur astronomer just expanding beyond the Messier list.
This is one, and I recommend it.

Book Description
The glowing cloud in Orion's sword, the Orion Nebula is a thing of beauty in the night sky; it is also the closest center of massive star formation--a stellar nursery that reproduces the conditions in which our own Sun formed some 4.5 billion years ago. The study of the Orion Nebula, focused upon by ever more powerful telescopes from Galileo's time to our own, clarifies how stars are formed, and how we have come to understand the process. C. Robert O'Dell has spent a lifetime studying Orion, and in this book he explains what the Nebula is, how it shines, its role in giving birth to stars, and the insights it affords into how common (or rare) planet formation might be.
An account of astronomy's extended engagement with one remarkable celestial object, this book also tells the story of astronomy over the last four centuries. To help readers appreciate the Nebula and its secrets, O'Dell unfolds his tale chronologically, as astrophysical knowledge developed, and our knowledge of the Nebula and the night sky improved.
Because he served as chief scientist for the Hubble Space Telescope, O'Dell conveys a sense of continuity with his professional ancestors as he describes the construction of the world's most powerful observatory. The result is a rare insider's view of this observatory--and, from that unique perspective, an intimate observer's understanding of one of the sky's most instructive and magnificent objects.
Customer Reviews:
The beauty of Star birth.......2007-02-18
This relatively short book covers a lot of material on astronomy and in a very understandable and thoroughly entertaining way. Mr. O'Dell, a noted scientist who played a big role in the development of the Hubble space telescope, does a beautiful job of blending the facts and history of astronomy into this fascinating tale of the Orion Nebula.
He covers some interesting history of astronomical observations and of the telescope, astrophotography and other detectors. He then goes into many details of the birth and evolution of stars from their initial gravitational collapse inside a molecular cloud to their achieving the nuclear fusion state and reaching hydrostatic equilibrium and then their long life on the main sequence. He also discuses some interesting objects such as brown dwarfs and rouge planets (star wantabes that didn't have the initial mass to ignite fusion). He has a very interesting coverage of the Hubble space telescope's history including the details of the infamous mirror problem and how it happened.
As he gets into the description of the Orion Nebula itself, he covers (and documents with beautiful pictures) many of the amazing features of this relatively nearby young stellar nursery. He discusses the dominant stars such as Theta1C, the numerous proplyds, the visible shock waves and the high speed particle jets emanating from the circumstellar disks.
A particularly thought provoking passage in this book was when Mr. O'Dell described what it would look like to an observer who was within the Orion Nebula Cluster - he painted a spectacular picture inside my mind!
In the latter chapters, he covers topics like planet formation, the possibility of life in the universe, and how scientist are more accurately refining some of the terms of famous Drake equation.
He concludes with a short description of the scientific process and how we have gained more and more understanding of our universe from the works of Ptolemy, Copernicus, Galileo, Kepler, Newton, and Einstein. As each added to our knowledge, sometimes we had to let go of older ideas. As Spencer Tracy said in the movie, Inherit the Wind, "Progress has never been a bargain. You have to pay for it. You can have a telephone, but you lose privacy and the charm of distance. You may conquer the air, but the birds will lose their wonder and the clouds will smell of gasoline." As science reveals more answers to the origin of the universe, we sometimes have to abandon the simpler (and perhaps more confronting) explanations.
This is a book that will make you think, open your mind to the beauty of the cosmos, and appreciate the work of those giants on whose shoulders we stand as we gaze to the future and unravel the past of this amazing universe we inhabit.
Only 2 chapters devoted at THE NEBULA !.......2005-08-16
I feel a bit disappointed because i was expecting a book devoted (and specialised) at the famous ORION NEBULA and instead of that i've read a book covering general astronomy knowledge. The final taste that this book left me is that of a fair, easy-to-read book, but away from the main subject.

Book Description
In this exciting cosmic adventure, Finny, a young fish, travels through space and time while a supercomputer, Mr. Guru, educates the time traveler about the wonders of the universe. After witnessing the Big Bang, Finny sails through space and enters a formation of luminous, colorful clouds¿a nebula, the nursery of the stars. Inside the nebula, Finny encounters Mr. Megha using dust and gas to build stars. Megha gives Finny a tour of the nebula, explaining how stars are born. Finny learns how a massive star ends its life in a supernova explosion, spewing elements into space. Curious, the youthful explorer ventures out of his spaceship to catch some gold, and experiences the effects of the fiery burst of the supernova. The adventuresome fish visits an open star cluster, plays a spinning game with the young stars, and witnesses the transfer of energy between a binary pair, a supergiant and a white dwarf. Finny learns about the techniques that scientists use to measure distances in light years, and hears stories from mythology behind the names of stars and galaxies. The adventure continues... "Science begins in wonder and curiosity. Geeta Pati's imaginative rendering of the strange world revealed by modern physics brings it to life for young people." Frank Wilczek, PhD, Nobel Prize winner in physics. About the Author Geeta Pati strongly believes in teaching science to children through interesting stories and illustrations. She was born in India where she earned a graduate degree in psychology. Since immigrating to the U.S. she has been devoted to the education of children in the physical and biological sciences.
