Book Description
Led by the enthralling and controversial colonel Charles H. T. Collis, the 114th Pennsylvania Infantry was in many ways unique among the regiments serving in the Union Army. In Collis' Zouaves, Edward J. Hagerty reconstructs the Civil War experiences of this unusual group of soldiers who embraced the flamboyant uniform style made famous by the French army's Zouaves. Recruited in the summer of 1862 from Philadelphia and surrounding counties, the regiment battled Stonewall Jackson in the Shenandoah Valley campaign and went on to participate in many of the major battles of the war, including Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, Gettysburg, and Petersburg.
Customer Reviews:
A scholarly, but absorbing work that reads like a novel........1998-08-23
While something of a "Civil War buff", I'm not onegiven to re-enactments and such. But I do enjoy books about the CivilWar that are historically accurate and most of all, do not bore me! Mr. Hagerty's tome fulfills both requirements. It's the story of the 114th Pennsylvania regiment, whose members were culled mostly from the Philadelphia area. They were a true cross-section of mid-19th century society, representing not only the trades and professions, but every degree of human courage (and cowardice) one can imagine. Much has changed since the 1860's, but the traits, trials, and frailties of Homosapiens remains a constant. This concept is key to the entertainment value of "Collis' Zouaves". Hagerty brings main characters to life, with an emphasis on historical accuracy. Letters, stories, and in many cases photographs, give the reader a "first-hand" feel to the narrative. For Civil War buffs, this book is a "must-have". For the rest of us, with or without a direct interest in the Civil War, Mr. Hagerty has accomplished what seems to be so rare: a history book that's meticulously researched, yet fun to read. In my book, it's a "must-have" for every American. I know I'll read it again.

Customer Reviews:
Great book - so much to admire in this woman!.......2000-04-11
I loved this book. What a character! Not only did she travel the world, but she did it with her own money and under her own leadership. Admittedly, she hired lots of support (whole entourages in some cases) but nevertheless, the journies were hers and hers alone. I've done alot of traveling as a single woman, and even these days it takes some courage and self-reliance. I have much admiration for Isabella Bird, who went to all these far-flung places before there were all the modern conveniences and attitudes. Phenomenal woman!

Delightful Look at A Boy Going Through Puberty.......2007-05-13
What a little (84 pages) gem this is! I picked it up because it's written by Gary Paulsen, whose book Harris and Me is one of my all-time favorites, and I found this to be a charming, funny look at a twelve year old boy's puberty/growing pains.
Sparsely told, we follow poor Duane through 20 days of his life by reading his journal about all the horrible things that occur to him on a daily basis. What a sympathetic creature he is! From zits to ELBOWS (you have to read the book to understand) to smashing a girl's face with a volleyball, Duane "Doo Doo" Leech suffers more than his fair share of pre-teen tragedy in such a short period of time. The best part of this book is the tie-in to the little bird's nest found just outside Duane's windowsill; he chronicles what's going on with the baby bird, drawing parallels to his own growing pains and eventually learning that he might be able to fly, too, at least figuratively.
Paulsen has taken an awkward time in a boy's life and made it humorous, cringe-worthy, and at times even poignant. My biggest complaint is its length; this book should easily have been longer and it might have used a bit less tragedy--how much can one boy take? But overally I loved it and can easily recommend it, especially to all those boys who feel that they may never make it through middle school. I can easily envision a sequel--are you listening, Mr. Paulsen??
The Amazing Llif of Birds: The Twenty-Day Puberty Journal of Duane Home Leech.......2007-01-10
Using a humorous approach to everyday life of young boys, many lessons can be learned and enjoyed. I bought this for my 3 grandsons

by Gail Blazek.......2007-10-16
I found the book to be fasinating and very informative. I find myself referring to "Amazing Birds" when I see a bird I do not recognize or when I am adding another bird feeder or bird house to my property. Did you know that bird houses should face a certain direction? The placement of the colorful pictures throughout this book is unique. Keep the book nearby as you will refer to it often.
Informative and beautiful.......2007-10-16
This is an informative and beautiful book, full of fascinating facts about birds and so visually appealing that it is appropriate for a coffee table. Clearly, the goal is to be accessible without sacrificing good science. I find myself going back to it every time I see a bird doing something interesting in my yard.
A Book for All Ages!.......2007-10-05
I have always been a big fan of Barron's books (publishers of the popular Eyewitness series) and Amazing Birds does not disappoint! The colorful, clear photographs and drawings are a big part of the book's appeal and the fun, interesting factoids have you learning something new on every page. Dr. Lederer has come up with a truly unique format for sharing his interest and fascination with the avian world with everyone, child to adult. This book is the perfect gift for any bird or nature lover, even those who may already have a library of birding books.
Amazing Birds by Roger Lederer IS amazing !!!!!.......2007-09-25

Customer Reviews:
Wonderful Book!.......2000-10-07
John Rush gives us a present day triumph of faith. The book is masterfully written in a personal down to earth style. The author takes you from the California gold country, to the most remote location on earth to a little island in vanuatu which is home to an an amazing tribe of people. He tells the true story of a young man's struggle to come to grips with the reality of God, and the blessings that come from obedience to God.
An amazing journey across the globe and through faith........1999-10-22
Mr. Rush presents us with a thrilling account of faith and a journey to an isolated island. The book is a masterpiece, detailing an early life as an atheist to a switch to a missionary to the islands around Vanuatu. Everything from being made a temporary pastor to avoiding drive-by shootings. This book proves that God is active in the world today, and deeply cares for those unreached people in the world. A true-life account of a missionary, and a wonderful example of God's work in our world.

The Harrisons introduce the reader to multiple variations of love among birds, ranging from the friendly wren in your backyard to the over-endowed alpine accentor, from the cuckolded chickadee to the lesbian gulls of Santa Barbara Island. The details are fascinating, amusing and frank. With a light, wry touch, the Harrisons chronicle scientifically accurate tidbits, as illustrator Michael James Riddet wields a delicate pencil capturing each moments in striking black-and-white detail.
