Lots of Great Information for Moms and Babies!.......2006-06-14
I found this book at Whole Foods and didn't know if it was worth the price. Went across the street to the library and checked it out. The answer is yes, it is worth the (Amazon) price! It is chock full of information pertaining to aromatherapy and oils that are safe for mom and baby both prenatal and postpartum. I was especially interested in which oils help with the baby blues and this book gives a thorough rundown of those as well as others that relieve pain, give energy, and calm you (or the baby) down. I have to take the library book back, so here I am to buy it. If you are interested in massage and/or aromatherapy, or know a pregnant mom who is, get this book! I wish I would have had it for my first pregnancy.
A ýmust haveý.......2003-02-16
Many women enter pregnancy with a heightened desire for self-awareness and well being. Allison England has written an informative text, introducing the nurturing and health promoting treatments of aromatherapy and massage for use on mothers to be, and newborn infants.
Through the use of essential oils in baths, massages, and specific treatments, readers will learn how to increase their body awareness, ease the common discomforts of pregnancy and aid in relaxation and pain management throughout labor and delivery.
The sections on postpartum needs, breast-feeding and basic newborn care will ensure this book does not grow old on a shelf. Parents will refer to it again and again for safe and effective remedies.
Illustrated sections on massage for the mother-to-be, and baby, show how to nurture the mother, and calm the infant. They make for an excellent, hands-on tool for partners who want to participate in the birth experience.
All safety issues are clearly spelled out with the pregnant woman and newborn in mind¸ and general education is provided so that the reader can proceed in confidence, knowing which oils to embrace, and which oils to avoid, along with dosage recommendations for pregnancy.
Aromatherapy and Massage for Mother and Baby was written with the goal to help every mother feel her best, and help in facilitating the bonding of the mother and child in a fragrant, gentle way. This book is a "must have" for all pregnant women who want to explore essential oils, and their natural, time-honored potential for enriching their pregnancy and mothering experiences.

Good, well-written summary of 15th Century England.......2002-03-05
This book is well-written, with sensible judgements about individuals, events and social forces in England from the end of Richard II's reign to Henry VII. While other more recent, detailed studies are also available, Mr. Rowse's book is a good resource for someone who is beginning to study this period, and for those who want a well-written discussion of the transition between medieval forms of English monarchy and the Tudor period. His characterizations of persons such as Richard III and Henry VII seem to be generally fair and well-supported by other scholars.
Biased account of Wars Of The Roses.......2001-10-18
There have been many books written on the English 15th century, some good, some bad, and some, like Mr Roswe's here, completely one-sided. The book is dedicated to one of the author's friends, whose ancestors fought in the conflicts, obviously on the Lancastrian side. Rowse makes all Lancastrians/Tudors out to be noble, pious godsends, and all the Yorkists to be devious, unworthy, decadent cads. Even more ridiculous, Rowse appears to have used Shakespeare's cycles of plays as his "fact" base! Can that possibly be topped? Why yes, as there is even a chapter in this book dedicated to launching cheap insults at anyone who doesn't follow his narrow-minded, bigoted point of view!! "History" books like this one should not be taken lightly though, as they can be very dangerous. And one more thing, this doesn't make me a revisionist, it makes me a tradiotionalist! The real revisionists are the ones who altered history from the 16th century on. Strong reccomendation to avoid this book at all costs.
Rescuing Shakespeare's Histories From Revisionism.......2000-12-01
A lively, detailed, and unapologetically traditionalist interpretation of the background of Shakespeare's history plays, by a respected Shakespearean scholar and historian. This book is an ideal introduction to the period for both history students and readers of the history plays; it includes, in addition to detailed accounts of the principal figures and events of the war, an examination of literary treatments (including Shakespeare's). Revisionists may be put off by Rowse's staunch defence of the Shakespearean view of the war, but traditionalists will enjoy it a lot. I found this book extremely helpful for my own studies of the War of the Roses and Shakespeare's treatment of it.

Book Description
The battle of Bosworth marked an epoch in the lives of two great houses—the house of York fell to the ground when Richard III died on the field of battle; and the house of Tudor rose from the massacre to reign for the next hundred years. Michael Jones rewrites this landmark event in English history with startling evidence to suggest that the site of the battle recognized for over 500 years is wrong. He not only shifts the location of the battle, but shifts our perspective of its heroes and villains and its place in history.

Bosworth 1495: Psychology of a Battle.......2005-01-16
Dr. Jones led a tour I was on to the battlefields of Kursk, Moscow and Stalingrad and his presentations were so fascinating I wanted to read his Bosworth 1485. I had, for reasons that escape me, great difficulty getting the book finally having to get a used copy from Alibris but the effort was well rewarded. I am not a specialist in that period of history or the battle but found the book well written and convincing . It was interesting to say the least to have a different point of view about Richard III from the one most of us have from reading and seeing Shakespeare. And most of all for a reader interested in military history is was a good read.
Certain facts you can't change............2004-08-31
I found this book to be well written and very clever in its presentation. While Battle of Bosworth remains one of the main subjects of the book, its not the true subject of the book. The true subject of the book rest on the author's efforts to restored King Richard III's good name and hopes that his actions were done in honor and respect while maintaining the ruthless elements of his days.
However, the author failed to make his points because he failed to delivered on certain elements of logic and facts that cannot be changed. Even if we accept the illogical fact that Edward IV was not a legitimate heir of the House of York, he remains the legitimate King of England. As a legitimate King of England, Richard swore an oath of loyalty to him as his lord and liege. While Edward's marriage to Elizabeth Woodville was unpopular, it was legal. Their two children cannot be considered as bastards even if their father was. (Sons of a bastard is not a bastard themselves.) If their father was the legitimate King of England, then they were his legitimate heirs and Edward V was Richard's lawful and legitimate King. They cannot be bastardized because of their father's status. The author totally missed this point in his long chapters which from his perception, seem to legalized Richard's actions because his older "half brother" (according to the author's premise) was not a true heir to the House of York. That shouldn't matter at all.
I think the author was bit obsessive about how Shakespeare protrayed Richard III instead of how historians protrayed him.
Richard did murdered his nephews, he did overthrow a legitimate young ruler to gained power and he lost his throne and crown to an upstart Henry Tudor who probably had every right to be more ruthless due to his initial lack of foundation of his family rule. I have no doubts that Richard did have many redeeming quality as the author like to point out and he was a "man of his time". But his actions reflects a power hungry man who wanted to be King of England. He fought well at Bosworth and was let down by his other commanders. The author failed to explained why Richard allowed himself to be place in a situation where he might be easily betrayed.
The battle analysis was bit better and I really kind of wished that the author stay on this with greater degree. His attempts to turn Richard's reputation proves to be bit meaningless and it took away from what should be the main subject of the book.
Fascinating insight to new book on Bosworth.......2002-12-27
The battle of Bosworth marked the end of the reign of Richard III. Today it is one of the most intriguing medieval battles that took place in history with not enough information known.
The traditional view of where the battle took place has been a controversial point along with where the key players of the battle took place. Mr. Jones provides new insight and offers an entirely new perspective on the attitude of Richard III.
Jones overturns Shakespeares account separating the literary Richard III from the historical figure showing us a man who knew and understood medieval chivalry, battle tactics and the society in which he lived.
Jones touches on the illegitmacy of Edward IV, his similarity between his role at Bosworth and his father's role in 1441 in Pontoise and the significance of the crown that he wore into battle.
Jones relocation of the battle to the villages of Atherstone, Atterton and Fenny Drayton commands not only our attention but more research into the villages and locations in proximity to the current and traditional location.
The book is beautifully illustrated with maps showing the new and traditional sites. Jones meticulous research on Bosworth
is an important work in the continuing questions and intrigue surrounding the last battle of the last English King to fight in battle.

A courageous, honest look at the breast cancer experience.......2001-08-28
This writer's group of breast cancer survivors explores the darkness and the light of dealing with the diagnosis and treatment of breast cancer, the most common cancer in American women. The prose, poetry, and vignettes offered in this wonderful collection are presented with power and an honesty that sometimes takes your breath away. For example, one entry is on thoughts of suicide -- something even we breast cancer survivors rarely confess to each other. The writer talks starkly about being surprised to find herself planning (just in case) an act that she had always found dispicable, and speaking with tremndous candor and bravery about her thoughts and reasons for even looking at the issue. Some of the entries are also just plain funny, with the kind of irony that serious illness or disaster sometimes engenders. I'll always keep a vivid image of the account of one of the writer's brothers shopping for Astroglide for her when it was unavailable in her part of the country -- and he did this shopping in full clerical gear and collar! As a two-time breast cancer survivor (so far), I've used this book to focus my own thinking and to help offer peer-to-peer support to other women facing the challenges of the disease and the changes it brings to their lives. I've shared it with my husband to help him understand even more fully the range of effects and emotions caused by breast cancer. I've read whole chapters of it aloud as a member of a therapy group for women with advanced breast cancer. The book has helped us as we explore issues arising from dealing with a less-than-favorable long-term prognosis and the existential questions that arise from being in that situation. If you have or have had breast cancer and have ever wondered, "Does anyone else feel this way, or am I just crazy??" buy this and read it! Believe me, you are not alone! If you have not had the disease, but perhaps are a friend or relative of someone with breast cancer, and if you want to know the emotional experience of having breast cancer, this is the book for you. Can You Come Here Where I Am? is an invaluble resource and also a comfort in showing the common threads of experiencing the diagnosis, treatment and aftermath of breast cancer.
Personal, poignant reponses to diagnosis, treatment........1998-09-25
A wonderful, uplifting, funny and enchanting look at the lives of seven women struggling and living through the rigors of diagnosis and treatment for breast cancer. As every woman's nightmare became reality for these women, they chose to pour out their disbelief, anger, frustration and their determination in intensely personal vignettes about life, loss, priorities and survival.
I began this book expecting to be depressed, but found myself laughing as well as crying at vagaries of the medical profession, the common ways we all deceive ourselves, and the ultimate hopefulness of spirit. This is not another book about how to deal with diagnosis, nor is it the narrative of a miracle. It is the lyrical (and sometimes in-your-face) story of the ordinary and extraordinary events that punctuate all our lives.
A wonderful book for anyone touched by breast cancer - survivor, family member or friend - and I suppose that includes all of us.
Customer Reviews:
Soap writers have nothing on Lorenz!.......2001-10-31
This book is a piece of academic research, and at times it is hard to follow if you do not have the scientific background necessary. However, there are sections in this book more entertaining that network TV. When you read about the disagreements, battles, breakups, infidelities and romances that take place in a community of Greylag geese, you'd think you are reading a script for a new daytime soap opera. Konrad Lorenz could have easily moonlighted as a Hollywood writer. In addition to the hilarious antics of the geese, I finished the book with certainly more knowledge than before, and with a sense of admiration for these animals and the humans who painstakingly observed them.
