Book Description
The first book to focus on the day-to-day experiences of adolescents dealing with sexual identity issues, Always My Child provides the insights and practical strategies parents need to support their kids and cope themselves.
Parents whose children are gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender or who are going through a "questioning phase" are often in the dark about what their children face every day. As a result, offering support that will comfort and fortify them feels like solving a puzzle with missing pieces.
In Always My Child, Kevin Jennings supplies the missing pieces by guiding parents through the world their child inhabits. He explains what these teens often encounter -- teasing and harassment -- and offers solutions for parents who want to better understand their LGBTQ children and learn how to protect their self-esteem. He offers advice, including how to:
- Initiate constructive communication with their child
- Respond effectively to frequently asked questions
- Recognize depression and signs of drug abuse and harassment
- Successfully advocate for their child's well-being outside the home
Always My Child makes it possible for parents to create the kind of relationship with their children that allows them to grow into emotionally healthy adults.
Customer Reviews:
It was very informative, and accurate.......2007-09-16
It was very informative, and accurate. I, who am gay and recently just came out, bought this item for my parents.
Excellent resource book.......2007-01-10
This book is a very important resource and source of information for a parent of a LGBT child. It provides insight and "answers" to many questions parents overwhelmingly have when told that their child is LGBT. It is an excellent book for both the parent and son/daughter to read. Thoughtfully presented and well written.
Always My Child: A Parent's Guide to Understanding Your Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, Transgendered or Questioning Son or Daughter.......2006-03-09
This is an honest and on the mark book for parents about LGBTQ children and teens. It addresses issues important to the LGBTQ son or daughter and gives practical advice to the parent about acceptance and understanding.
Excellent guide for EVERY parent.......2004-09-02
Kevin Jennings, Executive Director of GLSEN (Gay, Lesbian, Straight Education Network) has co-authored the definitive book on guiding, understanding, and - hopefully - accepting in love your GLBTQ child. It is primarily targeted toward parents struggling to help and deal with their questioning or coming out teenage child.
This book is not specifically about dealing with transgender children, although there are about 30 pages devoted to dealing with issues and problems of Trans teens. It also talks to people of color and includes young peoples' input to parents. Cultural messages of gender and sexuality are discussed and techniques of dealing with these messages are offered for consideration.
Many of the popular myths about homosexuality and transgenderism are analyzed, with facts presented to aid in accepting and understanding. Suggestions are provided for dealing with friends, your teen's friends, neighbors, and coworkers. Signs of trouble are discussed, along with suggestions for helping your teen deal with them.
While the advice is directed toward sexual and gender diversity, the advice applies to dealing with any youth. The principles of dealing with children apply globally.
So what is the secret? The title says it best - "Always My Child." Your child's needs come first, no matter what. Love your child; don't pressure them, but encourage them to discus their feelings, fears, and problems.
An outstanding resource.......2003-12-11
This amazing guide will help parents navigate the challenges of connecting with a GLBTQ child and becoming an integral and supportive part of that child's life. With chapters on school harassment, drug abuse, and depression, this book also addresses the negative and sometimes self-destructive behaviors of our youth, but gives hope and tools to help heal these wounds. "Always My Child" is especially notable for its chapters on transgender issues and multicultural issues that previous guides didn't include. I was also excited about the chapter on youth questioning their sexuality (straight and gay and in-between), and how parents can be supportive in that as well, because this isn't something many acknowledge. Jennings and Shapiro have created a marvelous resource that will help not only parents, but anyone interested in helping our youth, both queer and nongay, create positive lives.

"Adjusting to the changes in your children as they grow is often difficult. Coping with the change from child to sexual person can be the toughest one yet. How can I talk about sex without becoming embarrassed? How do I protect him/her from pregnancy and disease? They think my values are just old-fashioned, I think theirs are naive - who's right? Dr John Coleman provides parents and carers with clear and helpful advice on these and many related issues, based on his long experience of working with young people and their families. Illustrated by real-life situations and filled with practical solutions, each chapter also provides details of organisations that can help and other sources of information. An invaluable source of advice for all families, this book will also be useful to teachers, nurses and other professionals working with young people. Anne Weyman, OBE, Chief Executive of the Family Planning Association, has written the Foreword to the book. ""This excellent and comprehensive book will inform and reassure parents and carers about sex and young people. Many adults find the topic difficult and embarrassing; John Coleman, in clear and direct language, covers topics such as bodily changes, relationships, personal safety, risky behaviour, sexual orientation, sex and the law and the roles of parents and schools. The book will prove invaluable for those adults with a responsibility for young people."" Doreen E. Massey (Baroness Massey of Darwen) "
Customer Reviews:
Sex and your teenager.......2002-02-24
This book is part of a new series on Family Matters introduced by Wiley to highlight common topics relevant to the 21st century family.
John Coleman is a clinical psychologist with many years of clinical and academic experience at the Royal London Hospital. Since 1988 the director of the Trust for the Study of Adolescence in Brighton, where he has published widely on the subject of adolescence and in 2001 awarded the OBE for services to youth justice.
This book is for parents or caregivers on the important topic of sex and sex education for our children today. It is devided into nine chapters: puberty, learning about sex, sexual development, first relationships, impact on family, risky behaviours, sexual orientation, the law and the role of the parent. Each chapter is well-written with "case stories" or comments by teenagers or parents and information on useful organisations, readings or websites.
The style is short and informative and we believe this book can be a useful guide for many parents, but also teachers and even teenagers, who wants to take a peek.

Book Description
Parents today feel they should know more about what their kids are doing online on MySpace but many times the lack of general computer skills and the knowledge of specific ins and outs of how to get around MySpace intimidates them into inaction. In MySpace 4 Parents the author, Marc Harris, starts from the beginning. If you can turn your computer on and off, use a keyboard and mouse and get on the internet, you are already qualified to use this book to become a MySpace expert.
MySpace 4 Parents leads the reader through setting up a MySpace account to learn all of the privacy safeguards that are built into the MySpace system and then explains common sense guidelines for going beyond the standard safety setup. Parents can then use their newly acquired knowledge and help their kids apply it to their MySpace accounts.
MySpace 4 Parents doesnÂ't assume that all family relationships work smoothly enough to allow every parent to sit down with their teen and reset privacy settings on the teenÂ's account. Readers of the ebook MySpace 4 Parents will not only understand MySpace better, but they will know how to access pictures, videos, blogs and comments left on their childÂ's MySpace pages to help them monitor their childÂ's activities.
Since every reader learns differently, the ebook comes with six online videos in multiple formats that shows all the steps to view sections of a MySpace account in detail, no matter the readers computer skill level. Video lessons allows parents without extensive computer skills to walk visually through the steps so that understanding of complex procedures comes more easily.
Chapters are broken down to ÂWhat Parents Need to KnowÂ, ÂWhat Your Child Needs to KnowÂ, ÂMonitoring Your ChildÂ's CommunityÂ, ÂExplaining the Different Main Areas of MySpaceÂ, a summary of steps to take to protect your child and extensive resources on both MySpace and online child safety in general.
Many parents assume that the major danger to their children are pedophiles and other sexual predators. MySpace 4 Parents covers this obvious problem in depth with numerous tips to keep a teen from being a target. However, there are extensive explanations on dangers that parents may not realize could be to happening to their child online, such as cyberbullying and inappropriate content.
Book Description
TOMCAT! The Gurmman F-14 Story is an exciting oral history of the most versatile air supremacy fighter in the world . . . much of it written from the vantage point of the airplane's cockpit! Told in an anecdotal format, this new book is richly marbled with the salt air of fleet experience. Perhaps the F-14 program's greatest success is its overwhelming acceptance by the youngsters in the fleet. Anecdotes about the Tomcat legend abound . . . expecially in the chapters devoted to its employment by the fleet in the oceans of the world. Of particular interest are the chapters dealing with the sale of Tomcats to Iran and the subsequent integration of the airplane into Iran's armed forces. On-the-scene eye witness accounts provide a unique perspective of this fascinating aspect of the Tomcat story. TOMCAT! contains over 150 photographs, most in color and never bfore published, and most of them taken by Tomcat aircrews with hand-held cameras. These provide a fascinating backdrop for the oral history contained in the book. This is not a garden variety history about an airplane. It is a sometimes heart-stopping stroy of how a controversial airplane finally made it into the hearts and minds of the fleet . . . after stumbling at the starting gates of an outmoded defense acquisition system. It is the story of the best air supremacy fighter in the world! Rear Admiral Paul Gillcrist, USN (Retired), commanded a fleet fighter squadron on three carrier combat deployments to the Tonkin Gulf during which he flew 167 combat missions over Vietnam. For these he was awarded seventeen combat decorations. In his thirty-three year flying career as a fleet pilot and Navy test pilot as well, he flew 71 different U.S. and foreign tactical airplanes including the U.S. Air Force's F-104, F-105, F-106, F-15, F-16, YF-17 and F-20. He flew the Navy's F-4, F-5, F-8, F-11, F-14 and F/A-18 as well as several key foreign tactical airplanes. During his carrier flying career, which spanned an amazing twenty-seven years, he commanded a fighter squadron, a carrier air wing and was the wing commander for all Pacific Fleet fighter squadrons. He flew from sixteen carriers, and in his last flying assignment accumulated over four hundred flight hours in the Tomcat culminating, at age 51, in becoming the first flag officer to land the Tomcat on an aircraft carrier - the U.S.S. KITTYHAWK on 21 October 1980. The author of FEET WET, Reflections of a Carrier Pilot, Admiral Gillcrist is eminently qualified to write the F-14 story!, over 150 color & b/w photographs, 8 1/2" x 11"
Customer Reviews:
Outstanding .......2007-01-06
The book is a magnificent celebration of the birth, life and early demise of the F-14. Well written and filled with outstanding photographs this is the definitive F-14 book. The only problem is that the supply appears to be limited.
Forty years ago I sat in class reading the case study on General Dynamics and the TFX, McNamara's one plane fits all solution to military procurement. Fortunately for our country seval Navy admirals sacrificed their careers to prevent that disaster from being imposed on the nation. Grumman stepped into the breach and delivered the F-14 which evolved to become one of the premier fighters and ground attack aircraft.
My personal belief is that when the history of the 2000-2015 period is written, perhaps 30 or 40 years into the future, military historians will look back on the forced retirement of the F-14d's and follow on models as one of the tragic mistakes that cost the nation dearly. The premature retirement of the F-14d and the failure to follow on with a next generation fighter to carry the improved Phoenix missile increases the risk that the history of the next two decades night be written by the others, as is the privledge of the victor.
A magnificent history of the Grumman F-14 "Tomcat".......1998-11-20
When Grumman's Bob Kress designed the F-14 he created a legend. This book describes it from genesis to today, covering every significant development and deployment. The book is remarkable not only because of the authoritative detail but because Gillcrist is so candid. He's sometimes biased and doesn't mind admitting it--but he always back up a controversial opinion with facts. This book is highly recommended for anyone interested in air warfare and naval aviation. The pictures are terrific, though only 'blanket' credited when unofficial. But you'll see the great work of 'Heater' Heatley--nuff said!

Book Description
For more than 400 years generations of the Acton family, and their successors the Poyntz family, occupied the substantial manor house at Iron Acton in South Gloucestershire. Successive remodelling and extensions of their thirteenth-century moated manor house reflected the growth in wealth of the Actons, and later the increasing prosperity and rise to royal favour of several Poyntz family heirs, culminating in a three-day visit in 1535 by Henry VIII, Queen Anne Boleyn and their retinue. Archaeological evidence has shown that a new east range was most probably built especially for this royal visit. Much of its first-floor layout and some of the elaborate painted decoration (possibly by craftsmen of the Royal Works) survive, and debris was found of stucco (very early examples of its use) from a ceiling and an overmantel. Exotic glass and ceramic tableware had been bought, presumably for the occasion. More building development by the mid-1550s, the last major works at the site, gave Acton Court the outwardly regular appearance of a courtyard house. The surviving structures at Acton Court display much of their mid-sixteenth-century appearance.

From Ostriches to Woodpeckers, Birds to the Strangest Things.......2007-01-23
This is a great book for five or six year old. Mom or Dad is going to have to read it, but it'll hold your child's interest, because it is written well and the illustrations, though done in the style of yesteryear, are so nice. An added plus is your child (or the one you're babysitting) will learn about birds, without realizing he's learning and that's the way it should be, learning should be fun. From Ostriches to Woodpeckers, birds do the strangest things that captivate children and this book will captivate yours.

Fascinating bird wonders for all ages!.......2002-09-28
The male Emporer penguin goes without food for two months to keep an egg warm between his feet and belly... the African Honey Bird leads humans to beehives in order to share in the bounty (it wants the wax, not the honey). Birds do the strangest things! I remember loving this book as a child (along with Animals do the Strangest Things) and was glad to find a copy in a used bookstore to read my own child. It is still just as fascinating as I had remembered! I wish Scholastic would reprint this series.
