Customer Reviews:
Great help for parent or teacher of ADD child.......2002-07-25
I refer to this book often. It provides very helpful information about diagnosing and dealing with children with ADD/ADHD. When my child was first diagnosed as ADD, this book helped me realize that it was a fair diagnosis. Every time I get frustrated with the way teachers deal with him, or need to be reminded about all the implications of his being ADD, this is the book I read. I understand that there is a revised edition coming out soon. I plan to get it as soon as it is out. Dr. Umansky provides professional information with personal stories as examples, which make the book accessible to parents and professionals.
A MUST HAVE FOR EVERY PARENT OF AN ADD CHILD!.......2000-02-12
THIS WAS THE FIRST BOOK ON ADD THAT I PURCHASED AFTER MY SON WAS DIAGNOSED. IT HELPED ME AND MY HUSBAND TO UNDERSTAND OUR SON'S CONDITION AND GAVE US TOOLS TO HELP HIM. I ALSO GAVE THIS BOOK TO HIS TEACHERS AND IT GAVE THEM ALOT OF INSIGHT AS WELL. UNLESS THERE IS MANDATORY TRAINING FOR TEACHERS IT'S UP TO US TO MAKE SCHOOL AN AS POSITIVE EXPEREANCE AS POSIBLE FOR OUR CHILDREN AND THIS BOOK IS ONE WAY.
Overall, a useful contribution to parent literature on ADD.......1998-12-31
The book was interesting and reasonably complete. It was well-written for a target audience of parents and teachers of ADD kids and offered a broader perspective on what ADD is than many books. The book's principal weakness pertains to its discussion of the legal issues surrounding ADD and educational accommodations. While the discussion of IDEA was exceptionally thorough and complete, there was no mention whatsoever of Section 504 laws or accommodation plans. With many parents and school districts reluctant to implement special ed services for ADD, Section 504 plans have proven to be a godsend for parents in getting schools to flex to the needs of their ADD children without having to implement special services or IEPs. I would recommend the book with this one caveat.

Book Description
Published in 1976, Sir John Keegan's The Face of Battle was a groundbreaking work in military history studies, providing narrative techniques that served as a model for countless subsequent scholarly and popular military histories. Keegan's approach to understanding battles stressed the importance of small unit actions and personal heroism, an approach widely employed in the narratives produced by reporters embedded with American combat troops in Iraq.
Challenging Keegan's seminal work, The Eye of Command offers a new approach to studying and narrating battles, based upon an analysis of the works of the Roman military authors Julius Caesar and Ammianus Marcellinus. Kimberly Kagan argues that historians cannot explain a battle's outcome solely on the basis of soldiers' accounts of small-unit actions. A commander's view, exemplified in Caesar's narratives, helps explain the significance of a battle's major events, how they relate to one another and how they lead to a battle's outcome. The "eye of command" approach also answers fundamental questions about the way commanders perceive battles as they fight them-questions modern military historians have largely ignored.
"The Eye of Command is a remarkable book-smart, thoughtful, clear, vigorous, factual but creative, and grounded in the practical. It is at once scholarly and readable, combining classical scholarship and military theory. Rarely have I come across a book that makes two-thousand-year-old events seem so alive."
-Barry Strauss, Professor of History, Cornell University
"In a work well written, concisely presented, and convincingly argued, Kagan uses examples from Caesar's Gallic Wars to challenge John Keegan's focus on lower-echelon experiences of battle in favor of 'The eye of command': a narrative technique emphasizing decisions and events that shape a battle's outcome."
-Dennis Showalter, Professor of History, Colorado College
"To know whether a battle is won or lost is not enough. Kagan's deep analysis of theory and practice points to a new way of understanding complex army-commander and small-unit perspectives that can properly claim the status of history."
-Gordon Williams, Thacher Professor of Latin Emeritus, Yale University
Kimberly Kagan was an Assistant Professor of History at the United States Military Academy between 2000 and 2005. Since then, she has served as a lecturer in International Affairs, History, and the Humanities at Yale University and as an adjunct professor at Georgetown's Edmund A. Walsh School of Foreign Service and at American University's Department of History. She received her Ph.D. in Ancient History from Yale University.
Customer Reviews:
The Commander's Eye.......2007-08-26
This is an important book, which contrasts two approaches to writing battle narratives: the "Face of Battle" method of John Keegan, and Kimberly Kagan's "Eye of Command" approach. Her examples are the Roman History of Ammianus Marcellinus, and the Gallic War Commentaries of Julius Caesar. I did a longer review of this book in the Michigan War Studies Review, August, 2007.

Book Description
Toughened by months of bitter combat in the Lorraine campaign, a small force of artillery observers is hastily withdrawn from the Third Army line and sent into the "Battle of the Bulge." Their mission: Track German artillery, the enemy's most destructive firepower, and minimize it. For the rest of the war these men remain inside the arrowhead of Patton's surging forces. Beautifully written and honestly recounted, it is a GI's story, not a general's.
By launching a surprise dawn attack on unsuspecting American forces during the frigid hours of December 16, 1944, the German army was taking its biggest and most desperate gamble of World War II. The stakes were to involve western civilization itself.
Panzers broke through the thickly forested Ardennes, the last place among the entire Western Front Allied intelligence could have imagined the Germans would attack. The German forces were fresh and their tanks were new. GI's fell back. Many surrendered. Most got themselves together and held on valiantly. Casualties kept mounting. The overwhelmed GI's needed help, lots of it.
Eisenhower, supreme commander of Allied Forces, turned to General George S. Patton. Over three days, the quarter-million men of his Third Army withdrew from their positions to the south and moved north. Such a shifting hadn't been considered by the German high command who then watched in disbelief as it was carried out with lightening speed and adaptability. Nothing in its advanced planning came close to predicting how soon their own revitalized infantry and tank divisions, high on glory and vengeance, would confront forces just as tough and determined. The result was the greatest and most decisive battle of World War II and which would become known as the "Battle of the Bulge",
At its end on January 25, 1945, the "Bulge" would account for seventy-five thousand casualties among the American forces. German casualties ran past one-hundred thousand.

Overall, an intriguing and captivating book........1999-05-22
A perspective of WWII that I have never read before. Brings the day-to-day experience of the ordinary soldier into brutal reality. Wordy and rambling at times, but still a good book.
An Amazing Book !.......1999-04-30
On the Way, by Edward Marinello, is a fascinating eyewitness account of the American soldier on European battlefields during World War II. Through the eyes and ears of Edward Marinello, the reader witnesses the fears, challenges, and ingenuity of the men in Battery B. This should be required reading for all American history courses. On the Way gives a powerful insight to the human face of war. It is a reminder of how the courage, integrity, and tenacity of each soldier is crucial on the battlefield. This is a must read book!

On The Way is a terrific read it captures combat for what it was.I plan to read it a second time so that I can savour those unreal moments that were so ordinary to the combat GI"of World War II"
Account of Artillery Forward Observers in Patton's 3rd Army.......1999-01-26
I am something of a World War II buff. For me, On The Way captures the essence of combat like no other book I've read. It accomplishes this by combining the parallel and paradoxical moods of the fighting GI-the aloneness and the sharing-in such a way as to place the reader alongside. In gripping detail, the book recounts the experiences of a small group of artillery observers and their support teams as they track enemy artillery and destroy it. These GI's spearheaded Patton's Third Army across France, Luxembourg and Germany until one fine day they entered into Austria and war's end. The book was so absorbing that I've promised myself to read it a second time.

Book Description
The aim of State of the Universe 2007 (and subsequent volumes issued annually) is to provide an annual astronomy review suitable for the popular science level reader to be published every year in September in a format that will be suitable for an appeal to the Christmas market. The book will cover all major astronomical news on topics beyond the Solar System and place them in the context of the longer term goals that astronomers and astrophysicists around the world are aiming for. The target is to capture the excitement and vibrancy of modern astronomical research. The book will present a complete list of the major announcements, discoveries and news items from each year, with the major ones being explained in detail through selected chapters being written by invited contributors who are at the forefront in those fields. The January meeting of the American Astronomical Society each year will be the major source of astronomical news for the following yearâs volume, giving access to potential authors and contacts with public information officers of major observatories, space centers, etc.
The regular set features, which will appear every year, will include an annual chronological list of the latest discoveries announced during the previous twelve months; a review of the major news stories of the year with the main characters; a list of launches of major astronomical observatories/satellites during the past year; a list of planned future astronomical satellites; basic data on all astronomical observatories currently in operation with web links for the reader to dig deeper; list of anniversaries and landmarks; the latest from the BadAstronomy website by Dr Phil Plait, and the cartoon feature.
Customer Reviews:
A must have!.......2007-04-16
When I read about the book I was quite excited and when I received the book, a few days ago, I was not disappointed. The book has a part dedicated to brief news and other with in-depth articles about very interesting topics (gravitational waves and LIGO, supernova 1987A remnants, gamma ray bursts...) and appendixes with data about current and future telescopes and extrasolar planets. I have still not finished it, but it won't take me long to.
Only slight cons is that I expected it to cover 2006 news and, because editorial schedule, it covers march 2005 - march 2006. Then maybe State of the Universe 2007 was not the most proper or accurate title. Other con was that I expected glossy paper, and it's not, Mate astronomical pictures are not so spectacular, but I guess this way it's cheaper (and more ecologic?).
I hope next year will bring a new State of The Universe, and I sure will buy it,
Excelent Information.......2007-03-19
I read the Martin Radcliffe's book "State of the Universe 2007" and I think it was a good idea to write a book like this. It is informative, well documented, comprehensive and provides you a good vision of what is going on in the different areas of the Universe whicha are under investigation. I think he should publish it every year, to keep un up-to-date with the latest discoveries. We could collect them and follow up different researches and their results and novelties. Superb.

Book Description
This up-to-date and comprehensive set of two CD-ROMs provides a superb guide to the images and observations of the Chandra X-Ray Observatory, launched by NASA and operated by the Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory at the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics. Thousands of genuinely stunning photographs taken by the observatory are presented. Over 450 image files in JPG and GIF format are provided for use in any computer graphics program, and twenty computer video movie clips are also included.
Images and observations of many types of astronomical targets are included:
Supernovae Pulsars Neutron Stars Quasars Galaxies Clusters Black Holes Milky Way Galaxy
The Chandra X-ray Observatory, launched by Space Shuttle Columbia on July 23, 1999, is NASA's newest Great Observatory. Chandra detects and images X- ray sources that are billions of light years away. The mirrors on Chandra are the largest, most precisely shaped and aligned, and smoothest mirrors ever constructed. If the surface of Earth was as smooth as the Chandra mirrors, the highest mountain would be less than six feet tall! The images Chandra makes are twenty-five times sharper than the best previous X-ray telescope. This focusing power is equivalent to the ability to read a newspaper at a distance of half a mile. Chandra's improved sensitivity is making possible more detailed studies of black holes, supernovae, and dark matter. Chandra will increase our understanding of the origin, evolution, and destiny of the universe.
In all, the disc has nearly 6000 pages reproduced using Adobe Acrobat PDF software - allowing direct viewing on Windows and Apple Macintosh systems. Reader software is included on the CD.
Our CD-ROMs are privately-compiled collections of official public domain U.S. federal government files and documents. They are designed to provide a convenient user-friendly reference work utilizing the benefits of the Adobe Acrobat format to uniformly present thousands of pages that can be rapidly reviewed, searched by finding specific words, or printed without untold hours of tedious research and downloading. Vast archives of important public domain government information that might otherwise remain inaccessible are available for instant review no matter where you are. This book-on-a-disc makes a great reference work and educational tool. There is no other reference that is as fast, convenient, comprehensive, and portable - everything you need to know, from the federal sources you trust.

Quasars, Pulsars and Black Holes.......2001-02-27
It is hard for me to find a book that walks the fine line between being too academic, and too 'dumbed down'. Golden walks this line beautifully. He gets right to the point without being losing the reader, or losing the readers interest. This book is an excellent history of astronomy. It is also great look at the mysteries that still puzzle stargazers everywhere.
