5 out of 5 stars Very powerful affirmations.......2003-01-20

I discovered this book three years ago and the passages are very inspiring. They force one to reflect upon life and the world in general. Although the book is directed toward the black race I am really opposed to that aspect. I think it should be directed toward the "human race". One's religion, race and beliefs have no bearing when it comes to "Actos de fe". The book has affirmations and spiritual messages that will uplift anyone in the pursuit of successfully managing a crisis and day-to-day ups and downs of life. Moreover, it's a guide to managing and facing crisis on a personal level. The passages in the book are convincing and are the perfect remedy for a destroyed soul, for a person who is feeling down, for those who are ill and hope to recuperate their health and simply for those who need a little uplifting so that they can survive and face life. It's a great motivational tool that is appropriate for any human being. This book is available in Spanish and English.

                    Book Description

At last, a single-source reference book which accurately details the German field forces employed in Normandy in 1944 and their losses. Chapters include: German Combat Organization (overview); Number of Soldiers Employed; Effects of Allied Air Power; German Armor in Normandy; German Losses in Normandy; Combat Efficiency; and, Unit Movements. In addition, there is a capsule history of every major formation employed in Normandy: infantry and Panzer divisions and separate formations; artillery and Werfer (rocket) units; corps and field-army formations and miscellaneous elements which could bring combat power to bear. Dr. Zetterling provides a sobering analysis of the subject matter and debunks a number of popular myths concerning the campaign (the effectiveness of Allied air power; the preferential treatment of Waffen-SS formations in comparison to their army counterparts; etc.). He supports his text with exhaustive footnoting and provides an organizational chart for most of the formations covered in the book. Includes numerous organizational diagrams, charts, tables and graphs.

5 out of 5 stars Masterpiece and must read for studies on German army.......2006-05-21

This book is well-researched and excellent and let us know deeply what German formation and their strength(manpower, gun and armored vehicles)in Normandy. It is much better than some other book vague description of battle of Normandy because all is based upon German document and facts by figures. I hope the author will write some other topic in this format eg. Barbarossa 1941 or Byelroussia 1944 or Salerno landing 1943.

5 out of 5 stars Finally - an objective analysis of the german forces in Normandy!.......2005-08-05

First of all, what this book is not; it is not a campaign history and of course you will not find here, first-person accounts, etc. The book is divided into 3 parts:

                    # Campaign analysis(german terminology, unit organization, number of soldiers employed, air power, tanks, losses, combat efficiency, unit movements)

#German combat formations - (general headquarters artillery formations, misc gen. headquarters formations, infantry divisions, armoured divisions)

                    # Appendices - with many further excellent discussions such as:
tooth-to-tail ratios, allied armour strenght, calculations on armour-piercing capabilities, comments on other books, etc.

Not many historians who write about world war II are objective, specially since most of them are either american or british. To add insult to injury, most of them are simply sloppy. They should spend more time at the archives instead of just copying from each other. Mr.Zetterling is the real thing and he collects for this book a tremendous amount of raw data and it is also carefully annotated. The notes themselves are excellent and very informative.
Many readers might me surprised to find out that german casualties in Normandy were in fact only a fraction of what one usually finds in most books. I was not because i had had a chance to look at some of the german reports. KIA + WIA are usually given as 240,000(based on inflated allied estimates) and in sir Keegan's "6 armies.." even "a quarter of a million dead"(where did he get that from???)!!! I own a copy of this garbage and I was shocked when I reached keegan's ridiculous conclusion chapter. The obvious thing is that when you write about a certain campaign and want to know about casualties you pay a visit to the archives of the participants, INCLUDING THE ENEMIE'S! This is what mr.Zetterling does here.

I totally disagree with the other reviewer(mr.Forczyk) when he says "The chapter on German combat efficiency is weird and worthless, beginning by using chunks of Stephen Ambrose' s D-Day as a whipping boy." I think it is excellent, it is supported by the evidence and the author is not the only one(far from it) who advances the chapter's conclusion. Also the criticism of Ambrose, Brown and others is entirely justified and they are deservedly debunked. I understandt however, that american readers might hate seeing their flag-waving and biased champions beign spanked a little bit in the book's pages.

For me, the only topic in the book i would call 'revisionist' is the one on air-power. It is very thought provoking and it could very well be a correct assertion. The author however, says that more detailed study on this has to be done. It is possible that allied air supremacy was much more decisive indirectly(troop movement delays, etc) than directly(casualties, destroyed armour, etc). Reading the excellent "Sledgehammers" one finds out for instance that the germans lost 60 Tiger tanks to direct or indirect fire in Normandy and 13 to air attacks. This goes in the direction of supporting mr.Zetterling's contention.

The second part of the book, deals with the many german formations that saw action at Normandy. It is very good but i would have liked more details.

A nit-pick: as noted by other reviwers the book does not contain an index and that sucks.

In conclusion, i'd say that in spite of a few shortcomings and a steep price, this book is a gem and should be on the shelves of any serious student of the campaing.

5 out of 5 stars Superb reference work.......2005-04-21

This book fills a hole as a serious and detailed statistical analysis of the German order of battle for the Normandy campaign. It is not intended as potted history of the campaign, and really requires an existing knowledge of this period to be of use. It is going to appeal to the serious military student.
The bulk of the book is taken up with detailed TOE information (if you don't know what TOE stands for - don't buy this book) for all German Divisions, GHQ units, and Artillery in Normandy, which is extremely accurate and impeccably researched.
The earlier chapters attempt to establish a number of interesting new(ish) theories concerning German performance and and losses in the campaign. These are very well supported and are extensively footnoted. Subjects include establishing how grossly inflated battlefield casualties from aircraft were (though the author constantly stresses how crucial airpower was to the allies in a broader sense),how some previous historians have mis-read German sources, resulting in confusion over both the numbers of troops in Normandy and the casualties recieved by them there. These chapters could indeed form the basis for an entire new book, Though I suspect, given the authors attention to detail, we might still be waiting for it. Some of the information here might be unpalatable to dyed-in-the wool adherents of Allied superiority, though the author backs all this up with facts and (at times possibly selective) statistics rather than the vague assertions found in many English language works. The chapter on German combat effectiveness really requires previous familiarity with T.N.Dupuy's work. This is not a one-stop book for the Normandy campaign and it was never intended as such. For narrative information you need to look elsewhere to the thousands of other books on the subject.

3 out of 5 stars Too Many Ingredients Ruined the Stew!.......2004-09-07

Niklas Zetterling's _Normandy 1944: ..._ prompts this reviewer to ponder an unanswered question: who should accept the lion's share of the blame for a poorly organized finished product: the author, or the publisher? Zetterling had several irons in the fire with this work. It appears some professional guidance would have been in order to keep the author focused to pursue one goal for one book, not many.In Part 1: "Campaign Analysis" (pp. 1-113), Zetterling presents a competent scholarly study of German combat efficiency during the Normandy Campaign. The author introduces several contentions: the effects of Allied Air power were more of a nuisance to German movements and decision making, rather than destructive; German casualty figures were grossly inflated in Allied participant memoirs, and by western historians; the Allied forces did not enjoy numerical superiority over the Germans, as previously thought; and, collectively, the German units deployed in Normandy performed better than their Allied adversaries. Zetterling stresses throughout that gleaning data from surviving German archival material only (a practice most historians do not do), supports his conclusions. Along the way, Zetterling argues, more accurately, broadsides the works of other historians, most notably: Stephen Ambrose and Peter R. Mansoor. Zetterling tends to digress into other campaigns such as The Battle of the Bulge, and those on the Russian Front. This is more than comparative in nature, to the point where one almost forgets this is supposed to be a book about Normandy. Still, with some polishing, this first part could have emerged as a book length publication, or at least a good series of scholarly articles. In Part 2. "German Combat Formations" (pp. 117-392), the author presents an order of battle reference of German combat units in Normandy. Zetterling focuses mostly on artillery, infantry, and armor formations, but also includes miscellaneous units such as: airborne and Luftwaffe field divisions. Zetterling presents organization and movement information, but little else. The research extends down to battalion level in most cases, to the exclusion of details relating to higher headquarters such as Army and Corps. I was disappointed to find nothing more than mere mention of the German LXXXIV Armee Korps, a headquarters I am particularly interested in. Zetterling's data is extensive, but suffers the same maladies as other order of battle studies. Like Samuel W. Mitcham, Jr.'s _Hitler's Legions: The German Army Order of Battle, World War II_ (1985), there is no combat narrative. A brief overview for each unit's time in action, on the model of Shelby L. Stanton's _Order of Battle U.S. Army World War II_ (1984) would have been a nice touch. Again, Part 2 could have been a separate reference work. W.J.K. Davies' old standard _German Army Handbook 1939-1945_ ( 1973) is much more user-friendly, however. The third part of the book contains Appendices containing data, sometimes repeated, that could have been put to better use elsewhere. The full-length rebuttal to Trevor Dupuy's thesis by the historian Christopher A. Lawrence belongs in a scholarly journal, not here. The book is a nice package, printed on thick, high quality glossy paper. Many never before seen photos are sprinkled throughout, but as R.A. Forczyk (Amazon reviewer) has noted, the work contains neither an index, nor maps. Normandy 1944 should be a lesson to writers contemplating whether to write a polemic, or a reference work. When too many ingredients are thrown in the broth, an unsavory stew results. This is one book I would check out of the library before purchasing it.

5 out of 5 stars Will Appeal to the Serious Student.......2002-10-28

This is an excellent, albeit esoteric, treatise on German ground forces opposing the Allied campaign in Normandy. It covers the period June 6 through August 22, 1944. Geographically it covers the area delineated by the base of the Brittany peninsula, the Loire River, the line Tours - Vendome - Nogent le Routrou - l'Aigle - Lisieux, and the English Channel. This was the scene of widespread desperate combat that ultimately broke the back of organized German resistance in France. It is steeped in detail about the German forces -- not only their composition, but their status, capabilities, time on the battlefield, losses, and movements. It presumes some prior knowledge of the campaign and the forces involved. Much of it confirms conventional wisdom, but it is not without controversy. For example, Zetterling strongly challenges the view that the Germans had numerical superiority and that it was only the inherent superiority of the Allied soldier and his massive weight of materiel that led to Allied victory. He presents compelling evidence that in fact it was the Allies that had numerical superiority, in men, planes, tanks, artillery tubes, and so forth.
His order of battle information is amazing. He includes non-divisional formations (including corps and army-level units) and an incredible amount of information on tank strength and losses for each unit, by type of tank. The book also contains a excellent collection of photographs, tables, and organization charts. If you're a wargamer or just into OB type of stuff, or just like a lot of detail on a pivotal World War II campaign, this book has it. 2 out of 5 stars Half of a really great work........2007-03-06

W.G. Aston's Nihongi is the standard translation of one of Japan's greatest works of early literature. For those studying early Japanese history or folklore it is a must read. It describes the creation myths of Japan, the origin of Amaterasu, the sun goddess and the descent of the emperors from the gods (kami). It transitions slowly from myth to history somewhere around 400 AD as it begins to describe the acts of the emperors and Japan's interaction with its neighbours, most notably the kingdoms of Pekche, Silla and Koryo in what is now Korea.

The creation myths are somewhat jumbled in format and, without Aston's copious footnotes, would be almost unintelligible to the uninitiated. While at times the translator's commentary threatens to overwhelm the actual text, for the most part it plays a key role in aiding our understanding. The expert may find the notes annoying (and possibly dated since the book was translated in 1896) but I found them quite helpful. As the book proceeds into the more narrative historical sections, the footnotes decrease accordingly.

It appears that the Nihongi was written to provide the back-story to the role of the emperor as it existed circa 800 AD. Thus genealogical information forms a large part of the book and there are a lot of names in here. Aston also points out, with considerable annoyance, that many of the speeches and acts of the Nihongi are anachronistically cribbed from Chinese material extant at the time of the Nihongi's writing. Poetry, as well, is a large component of the work, often with inscrutable translations but tempered by copious notes. It should also be noted that to avoid corrupting the morals of the youth, passages dealing with sex are translated from Japanese into Latin. The curious and prurient may wish to brush up on their classical studies.

I was completely unaware, as I read the book, that the Cosimo edition of the Nihongi is only the first of two original volumes. Nowhere in the book is it made clear that there is another volume, although if you read the preface closely you will note that Aston refers to the "thirty books" of the Nihongi - in this edition there are only 16. The errata published at the back are for two volumes, one of which is that in hand while the other is clearly not present, and the title indicates the book will take us to 637 AD while the table of contents only goes as far as Muretsu in AD 499. It is difficult to believe you could publish this book without being aware that there was a second volume and almost as difficult to believe the publisher deliberately misled the readers into buying what was effectively only half of a book. Whatever the answer, I am quite disappointed in the lack of a second volume.

The writings themselves are excellent. While I usually enjoy folklore more than history, in this case, the best and most moving tales belong to the "historical" portion of the book. Tales of the evil emperor Yoriaku, the bold empress Okinaga and others are quite entertaining, while obviously not completely factual. I would have to give the Nihongi 5 stars as a great work of literature, Aston's translation 4 stars due to is dated nature and the publisher 1 star for delivering only half of the great tale.

                    5 out of 5 stars Quite a good source........2007-01-13

Mr. Aston outdid himself with this work, which must have been an undertaking of many a year. With more detail on the creation story than the Kojiki, the book runs a similar ground but as Aston will point out on occassion, has a large Chinese influence as well. I have been researching world myth for eight years now, and find this a great ancient source for the subject. The time of the gods lasting just over the first hundred pages, however the remaining literature provides in depth custom and legend that others around the globe can appreciate, and in some cases relate to, reguardless where you dwell.

1 out of 5 stars Beware--the Cosimo edition is only first half of the Nihongi--it is incomplete.......2007-01-05

The Cosimo edition of the Nihongi is only the first half (up to the reign of Buretsu--or Muretsu, according to Aston's rendering of the name). This is probably because the original edition was in two volumes, and the Cosimo edition only reproduces the first volume, while claiming to be the entire Nihongi. The Tuttle editions have both volumes in one book.

5 out of 5 stars Hell to read, but growing in neccesity..........2000-03-21

This translation is about the only one in existance. But, similar to the original, it is not easy reading. Like the Bible, it contains long, tedious lineages. If you can get past (or around) those, you are opened up to the mythology of Japan. Along with the Kojiki (written shortly before this, in 712) this provides a look into the beliefs of ancient Japanese. Not only beliefs, but as of late, more and more archeology is revealing the historical acuracy of many sections which were brushed off in post-war Japan as being mere fictions created to legitimize the reign of the Japanese emperor. Of course, to read this and think its Japan's ancient history without scepticism is a foolish thing to do, but for those looking to start in to researching ancient Japan this is proving to be more of a neccesity than first believed. Recomended, therefor, for the history buff and the world mythology fan alike.

A refreshing treatise on letting God orchestrate circumstances affecting us. Although a senior who has read Christian books for decades, I found author Whitson in Red Bird uniqueing offering her readers valid outlooks on dealing with the unexpected, especially those things that we would not choose, but that refine our relationship with our Lord, if we choose to let them. My faith has actually increased through access to this book, among the best I've ever read...a book that I stumbled across in our local library. Now Mrs. Whitson ranks among my favorite authors. Her books will be added to my personal home library.

If it were possible to give this one more than 5 stars, I would. This author actually gets BETTER with each sequel! Carrie Brown, affectionately called "Red Bird" by her old friend Soaring Eagle (that was the second book in the series -- read that one first, or "Red Bird" will lose you), has dreamed for years of marrying Soaring Eagle when she grows up. But is that GOD'S plan for her life? The reader asks that question over and over, as Carrie tries desperately to "maneuver herself" in a position to marry Soaring Eagle, all the while praying that he remains single until she's old enough. But what should she REALLY be praying for?

This one is truly the best in the series.

Little Carrie Brown is a young lady with plans of her own. Soaring Eagle is an educated, dedicated Christian Indian man without a wife. Life is hard, smallpox wipes out a town and a dream. In the end, many memories are revisited! This series is superb! Stephanie, you did a great job! Is there more coming?

This collection of powerful stories reveals the complex and wondrous world of the Blackfoot nation in the nineteenth century. The thirty tales transcribed by George Bird Grinnell provide an intimate look into Blackfoot culture and philosophy and remind us of tribal values to be upheld and taught. Classic tales of adventure speak of deeds accomplished, and cultural heroes roam across an arresting Native landscape of legend and history. Ancient stories, captured in oral tradition, cast the shadow of the Blackfoot people far into the past and provide foundation and meaning for their lives in the present. The final section of this book is an insightful overview of the history and culture of the Blackfoot Nation. First published in 1892, Blackfoot Lodge Tales is based on George Bird Grinnell’s personal interactions with the Blackfoot people.

A member of the Blackfeet Tribe and a historian, Thedis Berthelson Crowe provides an indigenous perspective of the Blackfoot Lodge Tales in her new introduction to this edition. Her great-great grandfather, William Russell, served as the Blackfoot interpreter for Grinnell.

As they were following up the river, they saw at a distance three old bulls lying down close to a cut bank. Heavy Collar left his party, and went out to kill one of these bulls, and when he had come close to them, he shot one and killed it right there. He cut it up, and, as he was hungry, he went down into a ravine below him, to roast a piece of meat; for he had left his party a long way behind, and night was now coming on. As he was roasting the meat, he thought,--for he was very tired,--"It is a pity I did not bring one of my young men with me. He could go up on that hill and get some hair from that bull's head, and I could wipe out my gun."

Skillful hunters beautiful in flight, Prairie Falcons inhabit the rocky cliffs of the American West. These raptors range from southern Canada and northern North Dakota to Baja California, Arizona, New Mexico, western and northern Texas, and southeastern Coahuila, Mexico. This is the first book for a wide audience devoted exclusively to the Prairie Falcon. Stanley Anderson and John Squires cover all aspects of the falcon's life history from mating and rearing young to hunting behaviors and the yearly migration cycle. They provide complete descriptive characteristics for identifying Prairie Falcons and also compare them to other raptors, especially the closely related Peregrine Falcon. In addition, the authors recount the long association of falcons with people, which may extend back as far as 2000 B.C. They describe the practice of falconry from the Middle Ages until today. And they assess the threats to Prairie Falcons posed by human activities, from pesticide use and destruction of habitat to disruption of the breeding cycle by careless birdwatchers.

4 out of 5 stars Wildlife Field Research - A Delightful, Personal Account.......2004-08-10

The Prairie Keepers is a charming account of a graduate student's summer wildlife biology project. I enjoyed sharing Marcy Houle's youthful enthusiasm for the rugged Zumwalt Prairie, her fascination with prairie wildlife, and her persistent efforts to determine why the buteo hawks thrived in this remote area in Oregon. Her descriptions of the adversarial relationship between the ranchers of the Zumwalt Prairie and the government employees (Forest Service, BLM, Fish and Wildlife Services, and the Oregon Department of Fish and Game) managing public land were thoughtful and well-balanced. Her recognition of the role ranchers play in preserving the Zumwalt Prairie was particularly insightful.

The remote Zumwalt Prairie in northeastern Oregon is home to a large concentration of buteo hawks - the ferruginous hawks, red-tailed hawks, and the Swainson hawks, all characterized by distinctive broad, round-tipped wings, husky bodies, and wide fanning tails. Elsewhere most hawk populations appear to be in decline. What makes the Zumwalt prairie habitat special?

Marcy Houle had a daunting summer job: locate and identify the nesting buteo population on the 200 square mile Zumwalt prairie. Climb the trees and place leg bands on the hatchlings while cautiously ignoring angry parents. Identify and measure relevant ecological parameters that might offer clues why the Zumwalt prairie is so attractive to buteo hawks.

Her account brought back memories of a summer several years ago when I mapped paleomagnetic trends in southwestern Montana. My field work was in many ways different; I certainly never climbed trees to place leg bands on hawk hatchlings! Nonetheless, I readily related to Marcy Houle's description of her field activities: careful reading of topographic maps and aerial photos, exercising care on private property, and completing transects of range conditions. Thanks to Marcy Houle for an enjoyable book.

This book gave me a fascinating view of an area I did not know existed. Ms. Houle lets us explore the Zumwalt with her as she studies the birds of prey on the prairie, the delicate balance of the natural food chain, and the effect of human land management. I have been far more aware of the different birds of prey since reading this book. Ms. Houle's writing induced me to search out other books, identification charts, and exhibits about these fascinating creatures.

Marcy Houle is a wildlife biologist yet her books read as easily as those of any good fiction writer. As Marcy presents the science of her work, in this case the study of hawks, the reader becomes involved in a very interesting story. As man's use of the land becomes more invasive of nature, man needs a better understanding of how his actions effect not only the earth but also himself. Marcy's study of a 200 square mile area known as "The Zumwalt Prairie" in northeastern Oregon provides an informative, interesting, and enjoyable look at man's impact on nature. Well worth reading!

                                  4 out of 5 stars Two-thirds excellent, one-third slow.......2007-04-07

Black-footed ferrets, as some of you will already know, are an *extremely* endangered animal that lives in prairie dog colonies. They were believed extinct until a dog in Meeteetse, Wyoming, killed one who was stealing from his supper dish. Fortunately, that wasn't the last of the ferrets. The Meeteetse community survives, and they have been reintroduced into a few national parks, where they are hanging on. The authors are experts on black-footed ferret biology, and have been active in the recovery programs for this species.

Knowing all this, I expected an interesting but somewhat dry account. Well, I was surprised. The book is remarkably lively, at least for the first two-thirds or so.

Each chapter starts with a story from a ferret's life, such as a prairie dog kill or a mating. One or more of the authors observed each of these events, and they "humanize" the animals considerably. After the story, each chapter moves to a discussion of its theme, such as habitat or predatory behavior. These are written in an easy, almost-conversational style (but with too many scientific passive voices). The authors provide a plausible account of the ferret, filling in gaps with reference to closely-related species such as the Siberian ferret.

Though not organized as such, the book consists of three parts. The first part covers both ferret and prairie dog ecology, interlaced with stories of individual animals. For example, the chapter on ferret hunting techniques begins with a narrative of a ferret killing a prairie dog. This literary device works well to grab your attention and sets the stage for the more scientific material that follows in each chapter. This part is written in a lively style throughout and is accessible to the general reader.

The middle part of the book focuses on the rediscovery of black-footed ferrets outside Meeteetse, Wyoming, in 1981. It also covers the initial recovery effort and captive breeding program, and it relies heavily on the involvement of the authors in these efforts. They are very critical of the state of Wyoming and of the decision by the US Fish and Wildlife Service to delegate authority for ferret recovery to the state. For all its strengths, it is written in a slightly less accessible style.

The third part tries to draw general lessons about endangered-species recovery from these experiences. A single chapter would have sufficed, but the authors drag these issues out over several chapters. They attempt to draw lessons about the politics of endangered species, organizational behavior, and other social-scientific topics, but in the end they do not have sufficient familiarity with these issues to develop much insight into these issues. As a result, too much of this part reads like summaries of a social-scientific literature - - "things we wish we had understood better when we began ferret recovery." The style becomes dry, and the book drags.

I was going to give this book five stars two-thirds of the way through, and it lost that star in these final chapters. The first half or two-thirds is very strong, and an excellent introduction to black-footed ferrets. You'll also learn a lot about black-tailed prairie dogs. If, in the later chapters, your interest wanes - - put the book down. You won't miss anything.

5 out of 5 stars A must for anybody interested in black-footed ferrets........1998-04-13

An excellent book, covering everything from the history of this rare species, its decline, the reasons for its near-extinction, its biology, and the ongoing recovery program. I recommend this book to anybody interested in black-footed ferrets or any endangered species recovery. The book is written in layman's terms without being overly simple in explanation with plenty of pictures and drawings to make it more interesting. A great addition to any library!
