Customer Reviews:
Traditional school-at-home only.......2006-08-30
I purchased this book as a new homeschooler because it seemed to have a lot of practical information on the nuts and bolts of homeschooling. I have since gotten rid of the book, as it is only useful for those who want to do traditional school-at-home, complete with a simulated classroom, desks, reports, etc. I know some people are most comfortable with this model of homeschool, but for many people traditional school-at-home merely replicates many of the problems with traditional school, but now in a different setting. Homeschoolers of a different style -- Classical, Charlotte Mason, Montessori, Waldorf, eclectic, and obviously unschooling -- would be much better served with another book.
A good starting point for learning about homeschooling.......2005-06-15
This is a good starting point for someone interested in homeschooling. It covers many of the reasons for homeschooling, walks the reader though the steps on how to find out what they have to do legally to homeschool, explains how to organize to do an effective job of homeschooling, shows how to manage a homeschool, and includes a list of resources to help the reader find other useful books and places to improve their homeschool.
For the last couple decades public schools have gotten worse and worse. "A Nation at Risk," which was published in 1984, made public the growing concern about the decline of public education. Thomas Sowell's "Inside American Education" explores some of the reasons for the decline. Diane Ravitch's "Left Back: A Century of Battles of School Reform" puts the decline in a historical perspective. So one of the main reasons for the dramatic growth of homeschooling is the recognition that in many cases public schools are not teaching children how to read, write, or do arithmetic. A large percentage of children are dropping out of high school and another large percentage graduate, but are functionally illiterate.
Over the last thirty years the homeschooling movement has grown to encompass every facet of society in the United States. It has been growing around 7% to 10% a year. Initially the homeschooling movement started with a couple small groups of people, largely hippies and Christians. Both of these groups were very distrustful of public schools and the effects government controlled public schools were having on their children. Now there are black homeschoolers, pagan homeschoolers, unschoolers, and so on.
Brad Miser's book does a good job of addressing many of the basics of homeschooling. His main focus is on those who chose to have a structured homeschooling experience. As such he doesn't address homeschoolers who are not structured and let the children make decisions about what they (the children) want to learn. For me the biggest weakness of the book was not exploring the full range of options for parents who are thinking about homeschooling.
In the chapter on socialization there are many good reasons to keep children out of public schools as it explores the positive types of socialization homeschoolers can have, and the negative types of socialization children are forced into in the public schools. Most homeschooled children have a wider range of friends, than children in public schools who only hang out with children their own age.
There are several chapters on how to prepare to homeschool. One whole chapter covers why it is important to network, and ways to find other homeschoolers. There is a chapter on how to plan out a school year and where get the resources.
There are several chapters on how to manage a homeschool. The author talks about how to have very structured classes. He encourages parents to have a lot of documentation on what the children are doing. I liked the chapter on taking field trips. There was a good chapter on how to evaluate the progress of your children.
This is a good book to start with for anyone who is interested in homeschooling. It is easy to read, well organized, and entertaining. I liked the frequent quotes placed through out the book. The author clearly believes in homeschooling, he and his wife do homeschool, so he is passionate and knowledgeable about homeschooling. If you are considering homeschooling, or want some help in getting started, this is a good resource to have.
Some points just aren't realistic.......2004-10-31
I am personally in favor of the homeschooling movement, as I understand that in many circumstances, it is the best thing for the student. However, it is not a panacea, there are many problems and consequences of homeschooling when compared to the traditional classroom. While the author does a good job in describing the mechanics of how homeschooling can be done, he vastly understates some of the problems. In fact, there are times when his attitude to the problems approaches the level of the cavalier.
The most significant example is in discussing the curriculum, especially in the qualifications and knowledge of the instructor. Middle school and high school teachers in public schools must be certified in their fields, and there is a good reason for this. There are very few people in the world whose knowledge is such that they can teach each of the traditional subjects of mathematics, history, English, economics, government, art, music and the various areas of science, all at the high school level. To say nothing of other subjects such as foreign languages, aspects of business and other courses outside the basics. Miser states, "As long as you can learn yourself, you can homeschool effectively." While this can work at the elementary and maybe the early middle school level, it is unreasonable to expect people to be able to teach themselves the necessary knowledge at the depth and breadth needed to teach these subjects at the upper levels. I know that people do homeschool up into the upper grades, but those that I am aware of rely on others to teach the material they cannot. They teach a few of the subjects and send their children to traditional schools or private tutors for the balance.
Another point where I thought the author was well off the mark is the section where he is discussing how a parent can successfully begin homeschooling their child after they have spent time in a traditional school. On page 150, there is the statement: "If your child is extremely tied to the `social scene' at school and suffers from a group-think addiction, your explanations might not help too much." The phrase "group-think" is used in several other situations to describe support for the traditional classroom form of education. To categorize a child's natural desire to remain with their friends as an addiction is flat out wrong. One of the correct arguments Miser puts forward in favor of homeschooling is that some students have difficulty fitting in socially. Here he argues that even those who are socially successful in traditional school should be pulled out and any objections they may have overridden.
On page 12, Miser argues that homeschooling is an advantage because the students education is managed by one person over a long period of time. I consider this a disadvantage, in that students need to be exposed to different teaching styles. Diversity of experience is nearly always an advantage. I also disagree with the statement that homeschoolers have access to the best educational material available. The best educational software is very expensive and some material, such as equipment for science labs, is beyond the budget of nearly everyone.
In conclusion, there is much to be said in favor of homeschooling. However, like everything else, only a realistic approach can be successful, and I don't consider many of the points in this book to be realistic.
Disclaimer: I have been a college instructor for over 20 years in math and computers, and have taught many future teachers, not all of which impressed me. I have also served as an officer in the local PTA and decided not to homeschool my children after an extensive examination and analysis of all the facts and consequences. They are currently in the public schools, are earning good grades and love going to school.

Female Tars: Women Aboard Ship in the Age of Sail.......2007-01-13
Opens your eyes to the status of women prior to the mid 20th century.
Interesting Light on Women's History.......2005-01-10
This book would be well read in combination with Joan Druett's Hen Frigates: Wives of Merchant Captains Under Sail. Stark's book focuses on the lives of prostitutes in English port towns, on sailor's wives and widows ashore, and those who sailed with their husbands, and briefly on the experiences of women who sailed disguised as men.
The author does a good job of portraying the limited options available to English women during the Napoleonic era, and explains why women might find it necessary to engage in prostitution, follow their husbands to sea, or serve disguised as men. The author takes pain to debunk the then-popular myth of disguised women sailors searching for lost husbands or brothers.
The book was, in some respects, too brief a discussion of the topic. A more in-depth analysis would be welcome.
Quite a nice little book, but you are left wanting for more.......1998-09-06
This book is quite a fascinating look at the roles women have played in the British Navy before this century. However, there does seem to be a lack of in-depth study of the women profiled. I found myself wanting to know much more than the author was willing to offer me. I felt too much time was taken re-iterating the social and economic standpoint of prostitutes in this era rather than focusing on the women's contributions to the Royal British Navy. I was mildly insulted when Ms. Stark suggested the reason these women were willing to be "transvestites," or dress as men to serve onboard naval vessels, was basically Freud's "penis envy" theory. This book did sharpen my appetite to find more books on the subject of Women in the Maritime Military.

Book Description
The complex and troubled relationship between protectionism and Conservatism in nineteenth-century Britain is the focus of this book. It looks at how the developing free-trade orthodoxy was challenged within Conservatism, and offers new perspectives on the intellectual controversies which precipitated the Conservative party's split of 1846 and the intricate denouement of 1846-52. In contrast to traditional accounts, it also seeks to explore the intellectual character of opposition to the evolving mid-Victorian consensus framed around free trade, laissez-faire and sound money, revealing how Conservatives debated key aspects of economic policy. Through an exhaustive reading of Conservative journals, pamphlets and contributions to parliamentary debates, the author is able to expose an alternative set of ideas about the direction of British economic and social change and the role of government in moulding it. Dr ANNA GAMBLES is lecturer in modern British history, University of Kent at Canterbury.

Book Description
Even Grues Get Full is the fourth collection of the hit geek comic strip User Friendly by J.D. "Illiad" Frazer. Written with fresh, dry humor and an amusing vividness that brings the cast of characters to life, the comic strip is loved and read by millions around the world, from professional technologists to eight-year old wunderkinds, from 83-year old grandmothers who miss their Commodore 64s to patient spouses of born programmers. The comic strip is packed with references to geek interests, from obscure movies to old computer games, yet non-geeks are able to enjoy the story lines and character quirks, from Erwin's acerbic humor to Miranda's constant angst; from the Smiling Man's Machiavellian machinations to A.J.'s dysfunctional naïveté. At the center of this lies Dust Puppy, the strip's gentle-hearted mascot and the character who has endeared himself to readers everywhere. In this book, join the antics of the characters once again as Stef contends with an enormous Tequila worm, Mike is tormented by Mr. Cola, and the techs move shop into an abandoned missile silo! Also included in this collection are the 9/11 tribute cartoons that were widely praised for their clear and simple pathos. Called "Dilbert for Geeks" by Wired magazine and considered to be one of the few consistently intelligent and socially aware cartoons on the 'Net, User Friendly remains one of the most popular destinations for geeks and non-geeks alike. This book is a sure hit with anyone who works with computers or for anyone who lives with someone who works with computers!
Customer Reviews:
For computer geeks only, but in that niche excellent.......2005-10-02
You have to be a computer geek to understand the humor. If you are, and especially if you have a unix/linux background and/or have worked with internet or other computer support you will find this one of the most hysterical comics around.
Comic for Geeks.......2004-05-16
The characters fight to stay awake with the geek drink of choice, prepare for covert operations at Columbia Internet, obsess over Quake, and live in cramped quarters called cubicles.
Apple, Microsoft, COMDEX, AOL, and other bigwigs are the subject of a few pokes. Even Clippy makes a guest appearance. This one like the other books is a history book of geeky events that occurred in recent years with a funny bone added. But, students, do not use this to study for that next history exam!
Warning, serious sentence ahead. This book includes 9/11 tribute cartoons that have been drawn and handled with respect.
If you're not familiar with User Friendly, go to its site (www.userfriendly.org) to get a taste of it and get to know Greg, Stef, Mike, and Dust Puppy, the UF mascot. The other editions available are User Friendly, Evil Geniuses in a Nutshell, and The Root of All Evil. Those whose companies have strict rules about Internet surfing can surf the book to get their UF fix. Don't get mad at users, read User Friendly.

The Stars: A New Way to See Them

Book Description
Delightful book full of the lore and science of astronomy. "The rich history and lore of the stars presented in an intriguing manner."—Columbus (OH) Dispatch.
Customer Reviews:
A star among stars.......2000-03-30
I came across this little paperback in a sailing store in Sausalito and had to buy it. The original edition was published in 1907. How often do you see books from that era reprinted in 1964 and still available nearly a century later? This book is obviously a classic.
It's charm is in the descriptions of the twenty or so brightest stars in the sky that can be seen from the northern hemisphere. Also described are the major constellations that these bright stars are in or near.
All the scientific details about each star or constellation are there along with some little comment about what makes each special. We see "golden Capella, rose-tinted Aldebaran, red-faced Betelguese, fair Rigel, the gentle Pollux, and Procyon, the smaller Dog star, all fresh and joyous and eager" in our mind's eye before going out of doors and seeking them in person.
The book aids observation of these stars in the sky by detailing the seasons of the year and time and place in the sky when each of the stars rise and set. The book's mention of the relative positions of stars and of constellations with each other and its maps make the process of finding things in the night sky even easier.
I know there are planetarium programs out there with all kinds of astronomical information, but none can match the writing style of this little tome. It reminds me very much of Henry David Thoreau's writings about the wild apple trees, the rivers, and other natural things in his neck of the woods.
Buy the book, get your binoculars or telescope and head outside for a night of wild magical viewing.

Book Description
In the ten years since this award-winning book was originally written by Michael Porcellino, the field of astronomy and its discoveries has grown by leaps and bounds. From the astounding images sent back by the Hubble Space Telescope, to the bright comet Hale-Bopp from the fleet of Martian probes, to the long-distance explorations of the Moon, Jupiter, Venus and Saturn--the universe has become more accessible than ever. And thanks to this revised and thoroughly updated new edition by astronomer and science writer, Patricia Barnes-Svarney, anyone with an interest can delve into its wonders. From the very close up to the far reaches of space, THROUGH THE TELESCOPE presents a uniquely "user-friendly" view of the universe, and offers both novice and advanced amateur astronomers some of the best tools available to watch the nighttime skies. You’ll learn all about: * Setting up a good, user-friendly telescope system * How to look at the universe in order to really see it * Upgrading your telescope for peak performance * How to spot a star cluster, a nebulaÖeven a supernova * Forming your own network of amateur astronomers. Complete with a web site appendix and fully updated charts on eclipses and planetary oppositions well into the year 2000, this edition of an acclaimed book will be an invaluable users guide for aspiring astronomers entering the new millennium.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent guide.......2002-02-01
This is an excellent guide for the amateur astronomer, with copious information on both what to look at in the sky and what to buy to do so, including both binoculars and telescopes. It has copious information on every aspect of skywatching, down to the best filters to view the various planets through. It's very supportive of amateur astronomy, consistently pointing out the contributions that amateurs have made and continue to make to the science (one of the few sciences where this is still possible).
Quibbles: a few formatting problems, where the formatting notation shows up instead of italics or whatever was intended. And they repeat the urban legend about Galileo going blind from observing the sun (though admittedly I just recently found out that this is mistaken).
Other than that, it's an excellent book, though more of a reference than a "sit-down-and-read" book, which is what I did with it, at least for now.
Meanwhile, I wonder if some of the other reviews (below) apply to the earlier edition of the book, since I did not encounter the same problems.
A poor excuse for a book on amateur astronomy.......2000-12-14
I pity the novice who purchases this book with the intention of learning about amateur astronomy. The book is a demonstration of what happens when someone rushes it to publication, does not KNOW the subject and builds poorly on a work that wasn't very good in the first place. There are so many terrifically awful errors in this book, it would take another book to document them. Pictures of microscopes where telescopes should be, refractor telescopes described as Dobsonians, etc, etc. The illustration/pictures are also slipshod, out of focus and poorly rendered. I cannot believe a suposedly reputable publishing house could release this "joke" of a text on amateur astronomy. It should be withdrawn from the market NOW and burned. -Richard Anderson
Badly in need of copy editing.......2000-07-05
It's amazing McGraw-Hill let this one out at all. There are typographical and syntactical errors on almost every page. I can't comment on technical accuracy, as I am a beginner at astronomy. But I do know when I've seen the same photograph twice with different, and inconsistent, captions. The publisher did a real disservice to the author of this edition--and to the memory of the author of the original version--by rushing this to market without at least showing it to a copy editor.
Warning: bad book!.......2000-03-04
This is the worst astronomy book I've encountered in forty years as an amateur astronomer! It is full of errors and has some of the poorest illustrations (out-of-focus, incorrectly labeled) I've ever seen in a commercial publication. Anyone interested in buying and using telescopes would be much better served by NightWatch by Terence Dickinson, The Backyard Astronomer's Guide by Dickinson and Dyer, or Phil Harrington's Star Ware.
Excellent reference book.......1999-09-18
As an amateur in astronomy, I found this book very educative. It covers all aspects of astronomy - from naked eye view of the sky to deep space objects, binocular to large telescope obesrvation, etc. Though it was written in 1989, the book will continue to be a reference book to all interested in astronomy.
