O'Sullivan's Odyssey presents the timeless and universal challenge that all parents face -- to see their children as distinct from themselves, to understand them as unique individuals with their own wants and needs, strengths and weaknesses, goals and dreams, and then help them build their oen lives upon the foundation of their inner selves.
Customer Reviews:
A Story Telling Masterpiece.......2006-05-25
I applaud this engaging literary accomplishment by author Rick Spier. In O'Sullivan's Odyssey, Rick has proven himself a story teller with exceptional ability.
It was thoroughly enjoyable to escape into this marvelous story of historical fiction set in Ireland and the Civil War South. The Author captured my attention and drew me in through his skillful and compassionate character development, the human element that engaged me at every twist and turn of this compelling story. The bonus for me was realized in the author's poetic and creative use of language and dialect. Reading this story was an experience that opened my mind and challenged my heart.
Compelling. A great read........2006-05-24
Rick Spier's compelling account of a young mans journey to find himself and firmly establish his rightful place in his family's history. The struggles he encounters are many and varied - both within himself and elements beyond his control. Not unlike the incredible challenges and hurdles many immigrants faced in America's early years. I found myself easily enveloped in Rick Spier's story - experiencing the angst of his hero's failures and joy in his successes. Rick Spier is obviously a talented writer and storyteller - I felt as if I were along on the journey myself...........
you won't go to sleep..........2006-05-18
this book will keep you awake. The story line moves quickly and it is enthralling and educational at the same time. Historical fiction at its best. You will learn to love and to hate the main character with all of his ups and downs and imperfections. The other characters in the book, his family and friends are just as vivid and real. Descriptions of the landscapes and the surroundings are done with incredible detail. It makes me want to visit Ireland and the American South to retrace O'sullivan's Odyssey because this book took me on a trip I did not want to end.
Epic & Enthralling.......2006-05-17
Have now read O'Sullivan's Odyssey twice and will be back for more. The layering and intertwining of the impact of one generation to the next grabbed my attention and would not let go. All the more impressed as this was Rick Spier's inaugural novel.
Kudos!.......2006-05-17
Rick Spier has written an intelligent, informed, moving and very entertaining novel that will grab your attention and hold it from cover to cover. You need not be a Civil War buff, or have any particular interest in Ireland to get caught up in O'Sullivan's Odyssey. A great read, destined to become a great movie, I'm sure.

Customer Reviews:
a fun-to-read memoir.......2004-10-09
I enjoyed this fictionalized look at life in small-town Iowa. The author's admiration for his father really shines through. I learned some history and felt I knew the family well by the end of the book.
Wonderful Surprise.......2001-03-19
When you read Dr Dan Wagner's novel, 'Docs Boy' you will wonder why he hasn't been writing for years. He must be a natural born phrase maker because he writes with clarity and style, with humor and emotion, that is rarely seen in first time books. Maybe it works so well because Dan has lived the story. It's based on his own boyhood in Primghar, Iowa, where he was the son of the local 'Doc', as everyone called him. It also serves as a wonderful stroll back in a time that was the golden era for small midwestern towns. It is a tale well told.
Amateurish First Novel.......2001-02-25
Even though this cute little book has a lot of charm the style is very amateurish. The dialogue used for the characters defies normal speech for the era and area. Better luck on the next novel.

I was touched by the sense of responsibility that the main character of this novel, Dr. Sharma, has for his family. He is the one who rises to the occasion and leads his family through thick and thin. It is a must read for anyone who wishes to see the kind of respect and love Indians have for their family members.
a realistic glimpse of an Indian Family.......2006-05-24
This novel is a touching and very close to the heart story of an Indian family. The characters are very real and are people you can associate with. If you are looking for some humor as well as real life drama, this is a must read.

Book Description
J. W. Childress loved farming but was lousy at it. His family—including his wife, children, and stepson—toiled as sharecroppers and migrant workers in fields of cotton, broomcorn, and peanuts in the Ozarks of Missouri and Oklahoma and were continually defeated by hardship and agrarian ineptitude as they struggled to stay united amid adversity.
In An Ozark Odyssey: The Journey of a Father and Son, William Childress recalls the life of his late, irascible but lovable stepfather—his bad decisions, his misfit marriage, his prickly personality, and his gypsying ways that impoverished the family. Stirred to recount humorous anecdotes from a peripatetic childhood, and including tales of coming-of-age in the Korean War and his own experiences with marriage and fatherhood, Childress tells a story of family bonds, wandering and struggle, privation and joy, quarrels, hard times, and the courage to brave the familiar. In doing so, he comes to terms with his enormous affection for a man who never expressed affection, while also coming to terms with his affection for the landscapes and lifestyle that ensured poverty and hardship for his family.
As Childress demonstrates through charismatic storytelling, wit, and a humor tempered by the ghosts of a hardscrabble youth, the Childress family learned that security is mostly illusion but that giving up is no solution. An Ozark Odyssey covers J. W.’s journey from age seven to his death at age eighty-two, through marriage and divorce and reconciliation, four children, extreme poverty, restlessness, bankruptcies, and at last, a little recompense. Against all odds, he died well off, leaving his children a successful Ozark ranch.
Customer Reviews:
Fathers and Sons.......2005-08-21
I just finished reading Childress's new book this afternoon. I should have been doing other things for most of the past two days, but I just couldn't put the book down for very long. I've liked Childress's poetry from the time I first started reading it back in about 1997, and I've enjoyed articles of his that I've read, but this memoir is just wonderful. So well written, by turns folksy, wise, self-deprecating, insightful, touching. Childress has lived a hell of a life, and it is a measure of a great heart that he has come through it without letting the hardscrabble harshness get the better of him. This is a book very much worth finding and reading.

Book Description
The 'Mexican Adventure' was a tragedy of the first order, born of a romantic view of Mexico shared by many Europeans. This school of thought took for granted that most Mexicans were barely capable of governing themselves and that a 'generous intervention' could only be beneficial to all concerned. For the French Emperor it would be a master stroke: a vast new vassal empire in America. René Chartrand examines the organisation, weapons and uniforms of the forces who fought on both sides of the conflict in a text accompanied by numerous contemporary photographs and illustrations including eight full page colour plates by Richard Hook.
Customer Reviews:
Mexican Adventure.......2001-02-14
For students of this period, this would be a good choice. Not the best, but a good choice. Mexico's uniforms were heavily influenced by European Armies, and in many cases, supplied from European surplus. Hook's plates are good, although I would have liked more detail ala Mike Chappell. Chartrande's text is adequate, but like many of his other works, can be vague, if not misleading. The most frustrating point about this book is the lack of sources. It's almost as if Chartrande is saying..."I wrote it, therefore it's in stone..." Still, it does have a place on your book shelf, but use it with caution.
generous intervention.......2000-12-17
When I decide to buy this book I thought it was only uniforms of the French Army but I was wrong, this great book by a great military historian Don Rene Chartrand is a complete study of the uniforms of the imperial army, republican army and the french army, this is the only unrivalled source of information on the uniforms of this period another great thing is that you do not find the common mistakes of other editions, you won't find misspelling of the name of the mexicans city nor names. René Chartrand examines the organisation, weapons and uniforms of the forces who fought on both sides of the conflict in a text accompanied by numerous contemporary photographs and illustrations including eight full page colour plates by Richard Hook.
"The 'Mexican Adventure' was a tragedy of the first order, born of a romantic view of Mexico shared by many Europeans." Rene C.
A good place to start........1998-04-24
Trying to find good information about the uniforms worn during the Mexican Adventure has never been easy, and some of the information in this very book can be argued as incorrect. Nevertheless, good color plates of the uniforms involved are too hard to find, and anyone interested in the Mexican Adventure should pick this book up. The book also provides an excellent overview of the events and history behind one of the most historically neglected colonial conflicts of the nineteenth century.

A Humming Bird in My House: The Story of Squeak.......2007-09-30
We were given this book that is filled with wonderful close up observations about one hummingbird. The author shares how she learned so much when a hummingbird over stayed his summer visit and how she helped "Squeak" until the following spring. The book was very enjoyable. We are hummingbird lovers and feed them.
Enjoyable and heartwarming........2007-08-04
A heart warming story and a great read. If you enjoy birds or wildlife you will like reading this book. The quick thinking and commitment by the author
saved this little hummers life.
THIS IS A VERY SPECIAL JOURNEY.......2007-06-19
which the talented and admirable writer, Arnette Heidcamp, leads the reader through - namely, the first months of a Hummingbird's life, from the beginning of winter to the advent of spring.
Ms. Heidcamp has amazing expertise in both bird and plant life, and what one appreciates also is her great love of them both. One wants to thank her for this lovely book and for the precious photographs which accompany it.
Throughout the book, the reader gets to know Squeak more and more, to understand the habits and traits of this darling hummingbird, and to realize what an intelligence it has. Ms. Heidcamp is dedicated and devoted and, yes, the ending is sad. I have to admit I shed a tear or two as a reader saying goodby. I can only imagine what an emotional time Ms. Heidcamp had to go through, after fostering this hummingbird so carefully and intimately, when the time came to set Squeak free.
I have alredy got several of Ms. Heidcamp's other books lined up to read, and even signed up with Random House to get an e-mail notice when she has a new book published.
I can't praise this wonderful literary and photographic pursuit highly enough. Reading this book was a true joy!
Absolutely beautiful photography and lovely story.......2007-02-24
Very beautiful photography and a touching story of how the author was able to create a relationship with a very tiny and fragile creature who otherwise would not have survived the winter.
Well worth buying.......2006-11-05
If you have any interest in hummingbirds at all, you should read this book. It is a quick read, heart-warming, heart-breaking, packed full of beautiful photos and tons of information about hummingbird behavior.

A Hummingbird in My House: The Story of Squeak
ASIN: 0292760477 |
Book Description
There is no mistaking a hummingbird. Even people who hardly know a robin from a sparrow recognize that flash of iridescent feathers and the distinctive hovering flight. So popular have "hummers" become that even casual birdwatchers now travel great distances to hummingbird hot spots to see masses of birds in their annual migrations.
In this invitingly written book, June Osborne paints a fully detailed portrait of perhaps the best-known hummingbird in the United States, the ruby-throat. Drawing from her own birdwatching experiences, she offers an "up close and personal" look at a female ruby-throat building her nest and rearing young, as well as an account of a day in the life of a male ruby-throat and stories of the hummers' migrations between their summer breeding grounds in the United States and Canada and their winter homes in Mexico and Central America.
In addition to this life history, Osborne recounts early hummingbird sightings and tells how the bird received its common and scientific names. After an overview of hummingbirds' distinctive ways of feeding, flying, and conserving energy, she offers a detailed description of the ruby-throat that will help you tell females from males, immature birds from adults, and ruby-throats from similar species. Osborne also takes you on a visit to the "Hummer/Bird Celebration!" at Rockport, reviews hummingbird banding programs, and explains how to attract hummingbirds to your yard or apartment balcony.
Customer Reviews:
Informative and entertaining read.......2005-08-02
This little book is wonderfully written and covers all aspects of the ruby throated hummingbird. The distinct characteristics of the hummingbird - their size, description (differences between the male and female), courtship, flight, sounds are covered in detail. Most interesting are chapters that cover an average day in the life of the male hummingbird and the nesting habits of the female (the author describes her own month long observation of one in a park near her home). Other chapters cover the fascinating migration, banding projects and how to attract hummingbirds to your garden.

Praise for Stackpoles Wild Bird Guides
"Although the books are packed with information, the writing is clear and direct and accessible to bird watchers at every level. . . ."
Even those intimately familiar with the birds will find a great deal of new information here, and those who have only a passing acquaintance with them will find these books a valuable resource and a pleasure to read. The photographs, chosen to illustrate plumages and behaviors, are uniformly excellent, and many of them are stunning. . . .
This sixth book in the Wild Bird Guides series offers a detailed look at all aspects of this popular species, including communication, migration, diet, nesting, brooding, and the hummingbirds unique method of flight, all illustrated in brilliant color photographs.

Great Ruby Throat Book.......2007-03-08
My biggest problem with this book is that it is about a thousand pages too short. Great reference book for those that are new to the Ruby. Read it cover to cover and wanted more. Photos are as good as the book.
Bob Sargent Shines.......2006-09-12
I just met Bob at the Audobon Hummingbird Festival near Memphis. He bands over 800 birds a year, and is such a giving caring man. Proceeds from this book help the Hummingbird cause. Fabulous pictures and full of information.
Great title in a great series.......2006-06-26
I've now collected a number of these little Wild Bird Guides. All of them are very good, this one the best I've read so far. As a "back-yard" birder, I see the same set of characters returning to my feeders, and it doesn't take too long before you want to get to know more about your new little friends. These guides provide more information than I've been able to ecrape together from various internet sources, and the photos are excellent.
The ruby-throated hummer is an absolutely amazing animal, and in this book you learn things like how these tiny creatures bulk up to 0.2 oz in order to accomplish the 600-mile flight over the Gulf of Mexico. There are countless other interesting facts about hummers in here - there's nothing very sweet about them, for example, no matter how sweetly they hover to feed.
Just the title for rounding out your knowledge of these fascinating creatures -
Great photos, wonderful content--a must-have.......2004-06-04
The ruby-throated hummingbird and I have quite the adversarial relationship. My stories of hummingbird encounters are becoming almost mythic in proportion, as I wage my battle to capture *the* perfect hummer photo. I have learned that unlike their Hollywood image as little gems from heaven, they are really rather nasty at times, especially to those of us wanting to photograph them! Mr. Sargent knows this, as is evident in his well-written text describing the behaviors of this bird. He uses words such as "mean spirited," "hot tempered" and "little bullies." I have seen all of these descriptions in action. This is part of what makes this book so enjoyable, because along with providing a wealth of detailed information about all aspects of the bird's life cycle, he does it with an endearing and humorous slant, showing at once his admiration for and understanding of the hummingbird's nature.
The photos that accompany the text are the ones I wish I could take, showing the ruby-throat in fighting trim as well as bedraggled from migration. I can only guess how many frames were taken to get the many included in this comprehensive book. In my dogged attempts to get even ONE photo this good, I've read every book I could find on hummingbirds, particularly the ruby-throats. This is by far the best one I have found. Not only does it inform, it always entertains, a rare combination in a birding guide.
Like hummingbirds? This book is a MUST!.......2001-08-18
If you're interested in ruby-throated hummingbirds, this book is definitely a must for your collection. Loads of information that is easy to understand and absorb. The photos are superb! To me, it's my "ruby-throated bible". Answers multitude of questions one may have regarding migration, feeding, courtship, etc. What a nice addition to my library! You'll enjoy it too!

Arnette's winter guests were birds who because of illness or injury were unable to fly south for the winter, or birds that had migrated to the wrong place and needed a winter refuge. Among them were Charlie, a rubythroat who was attacked by a cat; Little Peeper, with a shoulder injury; K-T, the little miracle bird who flew into a window at full speed and survived; Little One, a baby hummingbird who was abandoned when her nest was destroyed; and finally, joining K-T in the sunroom for a winter filled with hummingbird interaction, Cry- stal and Red, Arnette's third and fourth rufous hummingbirds in three years.
Sooner or later all of Arnette's guests, much to her sorrow, left her to return to their hummingbird wilds. She is happy for them but misses them all.
Here is another charming tale in a most readable series, a wonderful tribute to the indomitable spirit of the hummingbird. Hummingbirds: My Winter Guests will have you examining closely each tiny bird you are fortunate enough to see, in search of K-T, Charlie, and all of Arnette's feathered friends.

Delightful and charming ..........2000-04-17
This is a delightful book that shares the intimate lives of hummingbirds on-the-mend. I fell in love with all the author's wintering guests: Charlie, Little One, Peeper, Red, Crystal, and K-T. I was sincerely sad when the book ended; I wished there were a hundred more pages. Aside from the book being full of love and wonder, it's also an informative book that explores hummingbird behavior. Some of the information that Ms. Heidcamp shares was helpful for me, since I have spent much of my time watching hummingbirds in my own tree-studded backyard. It is obvious that the author genuinely loves these beautiful little gems, as she diligently nurtures these birds back to health so that they may be released back into nature. I honestly felt her sadness in "letting go." My only disappointment is that Ms. Heidcamp did not mention what happened to Peeper, the "Little Angel," with a shoulder injury. I would like to know how things worked out for him. I would also love to learn more about some of the questions readers and bird lovers have asked the author over the years and her answers to those questions.

A delightful book that shares a rare intimacy with hummers........1998-11-18
Hummingbirds : My Winter Guests is a wonderful little book. It is rare to have the opportunity to view hummingbirds so closely over a long period of time. The author conveys the personality of each of her little guests, and educates you about them without reading like a textbook. I fell in love with each of her guests, and was sad as each of them left. My only criticism is that she never finished the story of Peeper. She said that all of her guests eventually left and described each one's leaving, Peeper's healing and leave-taking were not addressed. Since he became my favorite, I still want to know more of what happened to him. I have 2 more of her books to read - I'm saving them for when I need a day of magic, which these books certainly present.

Book Description
Backyard Visions: The Ruby-throated Hummingbird is primarily a compilation of our photographs of one of the world's smallest and most beautiful birds. In the first three sections of the book, we use those photographs to illustrate some of the characteristics of Ruby-throated Hummingbirds as well to illustrate a brief discussion of their life history. In the fourth section, we provide a discussion of the care and feeding of hummingbirds and how to attract them to your backyard. The final section is devoted to a discussion of the techniques that we have found useful in creating the photographs contained in this book.

From the author: We describe vocalizations of Ruby-throated Hummingbirds (Archilochus colubris) recorded during agonistic confrontations at feeders. Calls were composed of 1-5 different note types. A sixth distinct note type, the W note, was not given within a call sequence. Similar to those of Black-chinned Hummingbirds (Archilochus alexandri), Ruby-throated Hummingbird calls were complex, and exhibited a nonrandom organizational pattern as analyzed using a Markov model. The two closely related yet allopatric species shared similarities in the acoustic structure of note types, syntax, and call length. Slight differences occurred in the opening note types of calls in the two species. We investigated how vocalizing is associated with the outcome of encounters at a feeder and found that the vocalizer usually was the winner.
