    3 out of 5 stars Speculative History.......2006-07-11

Much of this outdated book is based on pure speculation. Written in the mid-seventies when accurate Soviet source material was scarce, Fugate presumes the 1941 Red Army was not the stumbling colossus of post-war German Myth, but actually a cunning and devious foe who had a secret plan to destroy the Germans all along.

As we now know, Fugate was pretty much 100% wrong here. Recent research has shown that no matter how devious Stalin, Zhukov and Timoshenko might've been, the Red Army was a disorganized, ill-trained, ill-equipped mess. He overestimates Soviet capabilities at Smolensk-Yelnia (a theme he develops again in the 90's re-write of this book "Thunder On The Dnepr") and he claims the Germans had absolutely no idea of what they were doing invading the USSR.
However, the book does have some interesting (but again, speculative) insights into the conflicts among the various German High Command personalities who all squabbled among themselves over the best way to conquer Russia. Fugate portrays Guderian as an arrogant primma donna, and seems to think Hitler's concept in Aug '41 had the best oppurtunity to win the war...(ahem, cough).
Oddly, this is almost the only book in English which covers the Army Group Center vs. Western Direction Smolensk operation(s) (approx July 5 to Sept 25 1941) in any detail. This pivotal campaign has, for some weird reason or another, eluded close scrutiny from historians. There exsists no comprehensive, detailed book on Smolensk in any language as far as I know, except perhaps Eremenko's memoirs. At least Fugate has attempted to write one. We are badly in need of new and detailed research.

Fugate unfortunately writes in a ponderous, rambling style (like many Russian writers, actually); I have attempted to read this book cover to cover since 1980, and have only forced myself in 2002.
'A' for effort and research, 'D' for conclusions = 3 stars
Pick up a cheap used copy, but check out Glantz's Stumbling Colossus for a far more accurate picture.

    4 out of 5 stars Insightful book........2004-06-22

This insightful book covered the initial year of the German invasion of Soviet Russia. I thought the book was pretty well written and the author was able to go beyond the basic assessment as he tries with certain success, what went wrong and what went right during the initial seven months of this campaign. The author made it clear that it took a lot more then bad weather, Hitler's interferences and over extension of German forces to cost Germany any chance for victory during this period. He seem to be in the mind that German overall military leadership remains badly divided and also gives credits to the Russian willingness to trade space for time as they took the initial devastating losses and converted that time into a defensive position where they could launch a set of massive counter offensives. It seem that Germans were fixated into short term goals and objectives while the Russians were gearing for the long haul.

The author give a fair and pretty perceptive views of the strategic and tactical situation during this initial seven month period of the Operation Barbarossa. Its appears to be well researched and I enjoyed the book coverage of the leading military commanders of the campaign. I thought this book proves to be quite thoughtful and interesting to read.

Good book for a short birding trip. Does not have all birds in Maryland. Peterson Field Guides are much more accurate.

5 out of 5 stars Handy guide for the casual bird watcher.......2007-07-20

I ordered this item because I didn't know how to identify the birds I was seeing in my neighborhood. Initially, I thought it was a bound book and I noted in another review, that it was a fold out, which is important, and should be mentioned in the description, but for me, a fold out suited just fine. You can easily find the bird you want to identify, by unfolding the book and seeing them all at once, instead of trying to thumb through a thick bird guide or index. I've lost patience trying to find birds that way, in other books I've bought, though the more complete volumes certainly have their use for detailed research. This one gives you a good starting reference and is also limited to the local birds that you might actually encounter, on a regular basis.

I thought it was a book, it's not. It's just a fold. I'd send it back, but with shipping cost it's not worth it.

                            Book Description

Since first published in 1947, Spring in Washington has become a beloved classic of nature writing. It is now brought back into print, complete with the original drawings by Francis L. Jaques.

"As I reflect on the multitude of books published and read over the past thirty years, I can think of none to which I have returned more often and with more constant satisfaction than Louis Halle's Halle's Spring in Washington, a mixture of ornithology, international affairs, and reflections on the human scene, " wrote John W Nason in the American Scholar in 1961. "Written by a State Department official during World War II, it is an escape to the real world of nature and man. 'To snatch the passing moment and examine it for eternity is the noblest of occupations, ' writes Halle. He does so with quiet wisdom and originality. To read him is inevitably to share his passion."

In the form of a journal, the book takes the reader along on excursions through Washington and its environs -- the Tidal Basin, Rock Creek Park, and beyond -- to experience the rebirth of the season. To the movement of winds and skies, the migrations of birds, the budding of plants and trees, Mr. Halle brings a quick and observant eye. But more important, he brings an imagination that can evoke in the reader a new perception of the drama in the universe around him.

                            5 out of 5 stars Rave Review.......2007-08-29

I orginally bought this book in 1988 and thought it a beautifully written book on not only bird watching but of a Washington that no longer exists due to modern highways and bustle. I recently purchased this book for a friend who is a bird watcher and has lived in DC. I hope he will like it as much as I do. Jenny Brake

5 out of 5 stars A glorious and timeless exploration of the REAL news of D.C........1999-04-20

This is one of those rare books that lifts you out of your chair and brings you along on a soaring journey to the natural world beyond the government office windows. It is written as a daily journal of nature explorations in and around Washington, D.C. and makes a perfect companion for any watcher of spring. The author was a keen observer of natural life when he wrote the book in 1945, and the watchful naturalist today will find much to celebrate in the wildlife that is still here today, and also much to mourn that has been lost in the intervening decades. No more do we have rafts of mergansers resting in the Tidal Basin, but Dyke Marsh is still the place to see waterthrushes, and herons still stop by the ponds on the Mall. Halle's eloquent musings on the question of "What is important?" are still relevant today, as the press and government continue to occupy themselves with matters of man-made events and ignore the real news happening all around us--the news of the actual world going about its business completely unconcerned with scandal or finance. Swans still fly south over government office buildings, and anyone who notices and rejoices in such happenings will find a true friend in this marvelous book.

                            5 out of 5 stars A love letter.......1999-03-05

Louis Halle reveals his soul in this evocative love letter to the stirrings of spring. Though set along Rock Creek and the Potomac River in and around Washington, this work will transport you away from this world into another time and place in which the sheer joy of seeing nature burst into color will overwhelm you. Close your eyes and have someone read this book to you and you will be able to smell the tidal waters and hear the wind in the marsh grass. Halle's book is pure pleasure.

5 out of 5 stars A classic book for the environmental library.......1996-12-15

This a book from another time which is still relevant to our day and age. The writer takes time from a boring desk job in wartime Washington to provide timeless observations about nature along the Potomac river as he experiences it in early morning bicycle rides. He indirectly puts man in his place and foretells many of the things environmentalists have rediscovered in the last 20 years. Highly recommended in general, but especially if you have any familiarity with the area around Washington, DC.
