Too many errors to be reliable.......2002-01-01
I was very excited to receive this book, but was disappointed upon reading it. I am a librarian who specializes in biological information, and I found this book to be full of both scientific and editorial errors.
The authors can't decide if there are 9 or 11 essential amino acids (most authorities say 8 or 9), and they sometimes mix up amino acids with fatty acids. These and most of the other biological errors are so basic that a high-school biology student should know better. As for the writing, I found non-sensical sentences and entire paragraphs misplaced (such as two paragraphs on legumes under the heading of fruit, instead of the previous heading of legumes where it clearly belonged). It appears that the text was not actually reviewed by a professional editor before it was published.
These scientific and editorial errors are extensive and can make the information presented somewhat confusing. Even worse, it indicates a lack of quality that makes all the information presented highly questionable. This is particularly bad because the authors often push very controversial points of view, which really need to be backed up by a high quality review of good science.
If you do read this book, I highly recommend that you also read books by other authors to get a more balanced view of how to live with diabetes.
Fantastic Book!.......2000-10-10
"What to Eat If You Have Diabetes" is a great resource for anyone with diabetes, their family members and friends. This book covers everything from the physiology of our bodies to dietary plans. It gives detailed explanations of how diabetes effects the body and what role diet and medications take in the battle against this disease.
There are chapters on exercise and how to eat smart while traveling.
The authors have also included a "suggested reading materials" list.
Great, solid nutritional information for diabetics!.......2000-06-29
This book has really helped me find a way to live comfortably with the limitations put on my diet by this disease. It even includes information on the use of stevia--a new, natural (non-chemical) sugar substitute readily available in health food stores. I would recommend "What to Eat" to anyone with diabetes, whether Type I or Type II.
Wonderful & Informative !.......2000-06-28
This book has two main sections. Section one explains the phisiology of diabetes and of certain foods. If you ever wanted to know exactly how certain food groups effects your body's responses, read this section. It is fascinating. The authors themselves tell you to skip this section if you have no interest in it.
Section two describes exactly what foods & supplements are beneficial to eat if you are diabetic and why. It also lists foods in the category (ie: high fiber foods). That is the beauty of this book. many books tell you to eat complex carbohydrates, more fiber, etc but they hardly indentify the foods. The authors also talk about the Glyclemic index which rates foods according to how fast they convert into glucose in your body.

good advice.......2006-02-13
This was very helpfull to me in learning what to eat and in simple to understand language. The dietetition I talked to kept
talking in sciencetific language That I did not even understand the food plan she game me. This author made sense to me. I don't eat at fast food places normily, but now I know what I can eat there if I have no other choice. She game me practical advice to navigating the supermarket, and how to get more fiber into my meals. I would recomend thios book to anyone who need a little more down to earth advice.
Is this Homer Simpson's version of diabetic advice?.......2003-09-20
I was absolutely shocked when I read this! I threw it in the garbage!I don't know what kind of diet she has looked at for diabetics but mine doesn't include cafe mocha with chocolate syrup,or cookies with white sugar, brown sugar, and syrup, or donuts! If I followed this book I have no idea what would happen to my blood sugar!my diet does not incorporate the things she says one can eat with diabetes, like 2 big slices of pizza at a meal! Come on now -get real!Ice cream bars? cookies?pizza?donuts? If you want to lower your blood sugar and get off meds forget this book!
what if.......2003-09-14
what if i have more than one problem.
what if i have diabetes, and high bood pressure, and and a colesteral problem.
i need a book to tell me what i can eat if i have all these things.
down to earth explanations for newly-diagnosed diabetics.......2003-02-16
This book has lots of practical, down-to earth explanations of interest to those with newly diagnosed with diabetes or those who cook for for diabetics.
It has hints on how to read nutritional labels, including the various names for "sugar", etc. We had an appointment with a nutritionist, and many things she suggested were mentioned and explained in this book.
The author talks about "drawing the line" on some healthy alternatives: she does not like whole wheat pasta. This, to me, is a realistic attitude. I try to cook as healthy as possible for my diabetic husband, but he just can't get used to one of his favorites, rice pudding, with brown rice. We won't have it very often, but when we do it will be the way he likes it--with white rice.
If you've read this far and are less-than-perfect at planning menus like I am, you might be interested in some simple menu plans for different caloric requirement diabetes diets at this website--this book plus these menus and some recipes from diabetes websites will get you off to a good start. You can fine tune things later:

"Mouth-watering recipes"?!.......2002-05-25
If your idea of "mouth-watering recipes that you can't live without" includes ingredients like 1/3 lowfat American processed cheese, lowfat or fat-free cream cheese and sour cream, lowfat frozen french fries, and powdered Ranch dip mix, then I guess this is the diabetic-diet advice book for you. As for me, eating lowfat American cheese is akin to gnawing on a PVC pipe - pure chemicals. And eating fat-free cream cheese is like eating your art gum eraser. I can live without such recipes. Essentially, this book is for people who are used to quickie recipes and fast food chains and want to still eat that way but try to control their blood glucose levels. The popularity of the Joanna Lund style of "cooking" certainly suggests that there are many who cannot give up such things as chocolate cream pie and are willing to accept the substitutes of fat-free, sugar-free chocolate pudding mix pie topped with Lite Cool Whip. For those who fall into this group, this book has a number of useful tables giving the calories, carbohydrates, fat, protein and salt values for prepackaged common brand name cereals, frozen desserts, cookies, pasta sauces, salad dressings, frozen entrees and frozen pizza. The same breakdowns are also provided for restaurant chain food, such as Denny's, Jack-in-the-Box, Wendy's, MacDonald's, Burger King, Subway, Kentucky Fried Chicken and donut shops. However, if one doesn't eat this way, has type II diabetes and wants to figure out a glucose-controlling diet, this book is worthless. I think this is important to point out because I purchased this book based on the two glowing reviews and am now out the purchase price. Indeed, the book does try to take a postive attitude in telling diabetes what they CAN eat, but the general information can be gotten in much more detail in other books. I would make a recommendation, but I am in the early stages of this research and have not yet found a diabetic diet advice book that I would whole-heartedly recommend for those who avoid processed food. So far, the best has been "The Diabetes Food and Nutrition Bible" which did offer some useful recipes, but even that book has menu plans that include frozen entrees, canned fruit cocktail, frozen waffles and margarine.

The What to Eat If You Have Diabetes Cookbook: Simple, Balan.......2001-10-18
This book was a pleasent surprise when it arrived. I had turned to vegetarian/health food cookbooks in search of good recipies, but still could not manage my diabetes well enough. This book is not vegetarian, but has similar recipies to books that promote healthy eating.
I did find some confusion in shopping for this book. This book is a companion to What To Eat if You Have Diabetes (NTC/Contmeporary 1999). This book features only recipes, and the first book printed has more information about food composition, etc. I am pleased enough with this one, to search out the first book in the pair.
This book is a start down the right path........2001-05-08
I rated this book with 5 stars because it opened door for me down a path of learning, understanding and managing diabetes.
Great Addition to Anyone's Kitchen Library.......2000-10-10
The companion book to "What to Eat If You Have Diabetes".
This cookbook contains lots of delicious recipes for everything from appetizers to desserts.
Great menu ideas even if you don't have diabtes.
Excellent Recipes for Plant-Based Whole Foods Eating.......2000-06-28
This book is a must have companion to the "The What to Eat If You Have Diabetes" book. It offers excellent plant-based whole food recipes can can be eaten by diabetics and non diabetics.
I would have given this book 5 stars, but I think they should have included more recipes.
Note: If you have an aversion to or dislike seaweed, tofu, or legumes, this book is probably not for you.
Excellent Recipes for Plant-Based Whole Foods Eating.......2000-06-28
This book is a great companion to the "The What to Eat If You Have Diabetes" book. It offers excellent plant based recipes good for both diabetics and non-diabetics.
I would have given the book 5 stars, but I only gave it 4 stars because they should have included more recipes. It is not the largest recipe book so I hope the authors publish a second cookbook with more recipes.
I happen to love seaweed, tofu, and legumes, but if you dont like them this book might not be for you.

Book Description
The first Thunderjets arrived in-theatre in 1950, replacing the F-51 Mustang and the F-80C Shooting Star. It was among the most colourful aircraft to see action in Korea, and this book features many photos from the author's extensive private collection, as well as firsthand accounts from the men who flew these machines.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent!.......2001-09-25
Warren Thompson has done an excellent job both pictorally and verbally describing one of the lesser known but most effective weapons of the Korean War, The F-84 Thunderjet. I think the F-84's in Korea may have flown more sorties than any other type. I flew 55 missions in the F-84G, took one AA hit in the wing and it brought me home safely as it did many pilots. Since so many of our G models were given to NATO countries, this model which was the best of the straight wing models, can rarely be seen in a museum today in the U. S. I am buying two more books to send to both the small USAF detachment at Taegu Air Base and the 110th Korean Fighter Squadron for their history of the base which I recently visited after 48 years. ...
Excellent!.......2000-07-31
Osprey and author Warren Thompson have done it again! An excellent combination of sharp, vibrant color photos, historical narrative and personal stories makes the third in the "over Korea" series an exceptional book for any aviation or Korean War history buff.
The reader is immersed in the details of operational missions, as well as the historical context of the war, giving a unique view of the conflict.
As in the F-86 issue in the series, the type face chosen for the main text is "petite", but otherwise, I highly recommend this volume.

Book Description
There are no state-specific books on how to appreciate birds and learn more about them. Like gardening, bird watching is a regional hobby, and the birds that frequent the backyards of Missouri differ from the birds found in Michigan. This series targets beginning and intermediate bird watchers from each Midwestern state.
The books are state-specific and highlight the birds that are found in each state. In addition to the profile, each bird entry includes a map to identity the specific range covered by the bird.
100 birds are presented via full-color photographs for accurate identification.
Full-color seasonal section informs the reader of: the migrating birds that can be seen that month, the foods that attract those birds, the plants that can assist in attracting birds.
Our partner,
Bird Watcher's Digest, has sold more than 4 million copies of their booklets on bird varieties, bird habitat, feeding, and related outdoor topics.

This book is an excellent overview of the birds of Iowa........1998-12-08
The Iowa Breeding Bird Atlas presents the first detailed state-wide survey results for breeding birds. Detailed species accounts are provided for more than 150 birds known to breed in Iowa. These are accompanied by maps showing the distribution of the birds. Several introductory chapters summarize information about the vegetation, geologic origins, and history of the state. Summary statistics include tables showing the most common species, the most frequently confirmed breeding species, and correlations between species groups and the different landforms. The data in this volume includes key information on both common and rare species. This book is an excellent reference for anyone interested in birds or bird atlases. The species accounts are extremely well-written and informative. I highly recommend this book.

At-Your-Fingertips Information!.......2003-06-01
I am an amateur birdwatcher, and just starting out in Iowa. The idea of classifying birds according to colour, and not according to the scientific classification of waders/raptors/... is a simple idea that's highly useful to a rookie like me.
The photographs in the book are amazing. I have always found most of the field guides to be confusing, since the paintings used will not reflect the true vibrancy of the colours of the birds in the field. Since the book adopts the policy of using high-quality photographs, it does seem to be more accessible. Bird identification no longer seems to be the pain that it usually is. I would recommend this book to anyone who is starting out into the world of birds!
Birds of Iowa: Field Guide.......2001-04-08
"The Birds of Iowa Field Guide" is the first and greatest source I have found to identify birds in my own Iowa backyard. The 270-plus full-page color photographs are not only excellent quality, but they are organized in easy to use color coded sections that allow you to flip through pages quickly based on the color of bird that you see. For example, the male cardinal can be found in the red section, the female cardinal can be found in the brown section.
Of special interest are the author's personal notes which are included among the descriptions of everything from size to nesting habits. Range maps on each page clearly show when and where the birds will be found. Beginners will find the tips for identifying birds and other bird basics most informative.
For the Iowa birdwatcher, this book tops the list because there's no need to search through pages and pages of birds that cannot be found in Iowa. All in all, it is outstanding.

The perfect gift for your favorite birdwatcher!
Since winter on the Great Plains is often bitterly cold, inhospitable, and colorless, residents of this bleak landscape feed wild birds both to help them survive and to bring life and color to the landscape. This strikingly beautiful addition to Iowa's laminated guidebook series will also bring life and color to everyone who enjoys watching and nurturing winter birds.
Dana Gardner's colorful and accurate paintings show birds in flight, perched, and at appropriate kinds of feeders. Nancy Overcott's text provides common and scientific names for fifty species, from the great horned owl to the red-breasted nuthatch to the white-throated sparrow, as well as average size, distribution, and preferred feeder foods.
Useful for both novice and experienced birdwatchers across the entire Midwestfrom the prairies and forests of North Dakota, Minnesota, and Wisconsin south through Kansas, Missouri, Arkansas, and northern OklahomaBirds at Your Feeder is a durable and beautiful guide to one of nature's favorite winter visitors.
