Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars brilliant.......2006-01-15

This is a great book. Simply great. I don't have time to read a lot of popular books, but I read this because a friend recommended it. What's great about it is that Dr. Frome brings you into the stories he's talking about. You feel like you've lived them and learned from them. I thought the story about Albert Brooks and "pooping" was very funny, and the story about a grandmother who had to move from her beloved house was a great insight into how perceptive little kids can be. I don't know if this book will make me a better person, but at least I feel like I want to try to be, and that's a start.

5 out of 5 stars What Every Parent Should Read.......2006-01-01

Dr. Frome's book is not loud, easy or obvious which separates it from the rest of the parent advice book pack. If everyone took the path of parental reverence suggested by this book, our children would be a lot more rooted and our fellow parents would be a lot more fulfilled. Mixing anecdote with theology and poetry and philosophy, Dr. Frome shows us a lens through which the everyday becomes marvelous.

      Book Description

This incredible CD-ROM provides a comprehensive guide to aircraft carriers operated by the U.S. Navy. Today's Nimitz-class nuclear-powered carriers are known as the powerhouse of the Navy fleet, over 1000 feet long and carrying about 85 aircraft. They are the largest warships in the world. Forward presence by U.S. Navy aircraft battle groups helps protect our overseas interests as well as encouraging peace and stability around the globe. Nuclear Aircraft Carriers support and operate aircraft to engage in attacks on targets afloat and ashore which threaten our use of the sea and to engage in sustained operations in support of other forces. Every aspect of the carrier and the aircraft is covered in this detailed material, which is heavily illustrated with color photographs, drawings, tables, and charts.

Nimitz class carriers are the USS Nimitz (CVN 68), San Diego, CA; USS Dwight D. Eisenhower (CVN 69), Newport News, VA; USS Carl Vinson (CVN 70), Bremerton, WA; USS Theodore Roosevelt (CVN 71), Norfolk, VA; USS Abraham Lincoln (CVN 72), Everett, WA; USS George Washington (CVN 73), Norfolk, VA; USS John C. Stennis (CVN 74), San Diego, CA; USS Harry S. Truman (CVN 75), Norfolk, VA; USS Ronald Reagan (CVN 76) (under construction; George H.W. Bush (CVN 77) (under construction). Earlier carriers still in active status: USS Enterprise, USS John F. Kennedy; USS Constellation; USS Kitty Hawk.

      Topics covered include:

      * History of the Aircraft Carrier, beginning with the USS Langley (CV-1)
      * List of All U.S. Navy Carriers
      * Space recovery for the early American space program splashdowns
      * The Forrestal Fire, 1967 - Heroes on the Deck

      * Photographs of the ongoing construction of the USS RONALD REAGAN at Newport News, VA - the ninth Nimitz class nuclear carrier, leading to the last Nimitz class (USS George HW Bush) and the next generation known as CVNX-1. The Carrier Replacement Program provides for the new construction of aircraft carriers. Currently, there are twelve active carriers in the Navy's fleet. Eight of these are Nimitz class carriers. An additional Nimitz class carrier is currently under construction, the USS Reagan (CVN-76), and will deliver in March 2003 to replace the Constellation (CV-64) which will retire in FY 2003. The last Nimitz Class carrier, CVN-77, was awarded to Newport News Shipbuilding in January 2001 and is scheduled to deliver in March 2008. CVN-77 will also serve as the "bridge" platform for technologies that will enable the Navy to transition from the Nimitz class to the next generation aircraft carrier (CVNX). CVN-77 will include new technologies such as an integrated topside island which includes a new multi-function radar, new propulsion plant monitoring improvements, and manpower reduction initiatives.

      Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars And the point is?.......2004-01-22

This CD-ROM consists of Adobe Acrobat files. It is a compilation of publicly available web pages that contain information about US Navy submarines and the submarine force. As far as I can tell, you could just as easily find the same material on the web with a decent search engine. For example, the CD contains the issues of Undersea Warfare magazine, which is readily available from a Navy public website. Many of the graphics are extremely blocky and unreadable. The web pages are largely DOD server downloads of public material, and are verbatim, right down to the warnings. A surprising number of pages are just `spillovers" from the bottom of a web page, and contain no information. Clearly, almost no editing of the material was attempted when transferring to the disc. If you use the disc while online, you can click on the hyperlinks and they will take you to more information. Not worth the money.

This up-to-date and expanded electronic book on three CD-ROMs has a comprehensive collection of documents and publications covering all aspects of the U.S. Naval Academy at Annapolis. The Naval Academy was founded in 1845 by the Secretary of the Navy, George Bancroft, in what is now historic Annapolis, MD. The history of the Academy has often reflected the history of the United States itself. As the U.S. Navy has moved from a fleet of sail and steam-powered ships to a high tech fleet of nuclear-powered submarines and surface ships as well as supersonic aircraft, the Academy has changed also. The Naval Academy gives young men and women the up-to-date academic and professional training needed to be effective naval and marine officers in their assignments after graduation. Every day, as the undergraduate college of the naval service, the United States Naval Academy strives to accomplish its mission to develop midshipmen "morally, mentally, and physically." 5 out of 5 stars Wetland Birds : Great birders reference and biology text.......1999-06-03

Wetland Birds is a fascinating book for birders and anyone interested in wetland wildlife biology. By examining relationships between birds and their habitats, Weller helps to explain why wetland birds look and behave the way they do. Weller's book uses research examples from all over the world to provide a global perspective on both the biological diversity and conservation needs of wetland birds. I highly recommend this book as an entertaining read, and also as a comprehensive reference.
