Diet? Don't diet? Eat low-fat? Count calories? Exercise? Just as there's no one reason for every fever or headache, there's no one reason that all women gain weight, and there's no one right way to lose it, says medical reporter Sue Ellin Browder, winner of five investigative medical-journalism awards. She read the extensive research and interviewed women who were successful at losing weight and keeping it off. In The Power, Browder's mission is to share what science has learned about weight control and show women how to match that information to their own individual cause of being overweight, resulting in an individualized weight-loss program.
"The main reason women are still so stressed about our weight is that we're continually told how important it is for our health, yet we're never given all the information we need to take charge," she says. Weight-loss winners, Browder discovered, are confident and keep making an effort to find solutions to their problems, rather than being defeated and emotionally distraught by setbacks. They are scientists of their own bodies, experimenting with different methods until they find what works for them.
Browder shows you how to figure out if your fat is healthy or unhealthy, and, if unhealthy, what to do about it. She identifies 11 different reasons women gain unhealthy fat, including daily hassles, stress, depression, having a lazy thyroid, anger, binge eating, polycystic ovary syndrome (a metabolic disorder), night-eating syndrome, and others. For each, she gives pages of strategies for taking charge. For example, if you're a binge eater, you need to "find your true triggers" (the pattern or chain of events that sends you into chaotic eating), then decide which links in the chain you can change, and how. You need to plan your food (meals and snacks) and stay mindful when you eat (no eating in bed or in front of the TV). She also teaches you how to replace negative thinking patterns with positive, confident ones.
This is a highly recommended, valuable, practical, and thought-provoking book for all overweight people (not just women) who have tried to lose weight but have not succeeded. --Joan Price

How to get the results you want!.......2003-07-09
I purchased this book because a friend of mine suggested it. She thought that it went right along with the Body Talk and Essential Oil book that I had been using. I thank her every day that she had suggested it.
I found this book so fascinating that I couldn't put it down. So I finished it on the day that I received it. It makes so much sence of why it is that we put on weight. It helps you to analyze what has triggered the weight gain that you have. And gives examples of how we can overcome the triggers.
This book has been a real eye opener for me. It made me look at myself differently and how I can improve on myself.
There is alot of self analyzing that you have to do but it gives you the tools that you need to do it with.
I would heartily recommend this book for someone that wants to do serious weight loss for life.
How Stress Makes You Fat.......2002-01-20
I'm telling everybody I know about this empowering book because it's helped me so much. It's the most refreshingly honest diet book I've ever read. All the studies the author writes about in the book are listed in the notes at the back so you can look them up for yourself and show them to your doctor if you want to. As we all know, it's impossible to take charge of your weight if you don't have all the facts. You begin clutching at straws. This book is called The Power because accurate information is power, and this is the FIRST REPORT telling women about all the new, cutting-edge research coming out of the biggest, most well-equipped fat labs. The most important surprise is how stress makes you fat. The big secret is a stress hormone called cortisol. Cortisol opens the unhealthy fat cell doors so the fat can go in. Cortisol can cause you to store more unhealthy fat even when you don't overeat! (That helps explain why I gained nearly 70 pounds when I really DON'T eat that much.) Scientists have now linked high cortisol levels to Depression Fat, Anger Fat, Binge-Eating Fat, Night-Eating Fat, Polycystic Ovary Fat, Lazy Thyroid Fat -- in all to 11 different ways you can gain unhealthy weight. Options. Making your own choices and finding your weight, your way. That's what The Power is all about. Buy this book. It will change your life. I've lost 60 pounds so far. Only 10 more to go!
MORE THAN A DIET BOOK, A HEALTHY WEIGHT BOOK.......2001-04-05
The author of this excellent book boils down all the latest research about weight. She then includes a bunch of quizzes so you can diagnose yourself, find out what fat type you have, and then figure out how to solve it. The author makes the point (and I agree with her) that most diet books disempower women by giving us ironclad "rules" to follow, even down to telling us precisely which foods to eat. Don't you just hate those little sheets of "the right foods" that doctors hand out. Women aren't stupid. We know the difference between a brownie and an apple. What we don't know is why we feel compelled to eat the brownie instead of the apple. This book tells us WHY WE GAINED WEIGHT and how we can use this information to get thin. A refreshingly honest book that's long overdue. I'm already becoming the scientist of my own body, I've lost 23 pounds in two and a half months -- and this time I'm keeping them off because I have THE POWER. My husband (my best cheerleader) tells me, "You go, Girl!" And I have!!!
TAKE CHARGE, GET THIN!.......2001-04-05
Finally! The complete truth about weight loss with no gimmicks, no hype. Sue Ellin Browder is a wonderfully honest investigative journalist with no pet theories to promote,no clinic to fund. She has talked to the world's leading obesity specialists, read the medical literature (more than 4000 studies!), talked to women who've been there (the weight-loss winners), and then written a guidebook any woman can use to achieve a healthy weight for life! This is a book for smart women who want to take charge of their weight and their lives. Rather than giving us a one-size-fits-all prescription (which, as we all know, never works), Browder gives us a list of options that have worked for other women and a bunch of questions you can ask, so you can make your own clear-headed decisions and make the choices that work best for you. I've already lost 12 pounds in three weeks just by becoming the "scientist of my own body" and achieving MY weight, MY way. Take charge. Buy this book. Strong, independent women have been waiting for these answers for years!!!!!
Good information, but leads nowhere.......2001-03-27
This is an excellent book that really explains just how complex obesity really is. It goes into great detail regarding the various physical and emotional reasons for the condition. The author talks about super-confident women (the book is geared to women) who have managed to overcome the odds and lose weight and keep it off. What the book does not do is offer any specific dietary guidelines. Instead she says it is best if each woman works out her own diet, taking her own needs and desires into consideration. She says you need to become a "scientist of your own body" and experiment to find what works and what doesn't for your particular situation. I thought the book was informative. It gives good guidelines about certain medical conditions, what tests you should have etc. but, in the end, it leaves the reader without any real guidance.
Book Description
This book is a compilation of the most recent theoretically and empirically oriented research on international warfare. Some of the chapters are updated from the earlier Handbook of War Studies; most are new contributions representing new understandings of the vast changes in international relations that have occurred during the past decade.
The new themes addressed in the volume are democratic peace theory (Bruce Russett and Harvey Starr); ethnic or identity conflict and interstate conflict (Manus Midlarsky); terrorism (Martha Crenshaw); ancient warfare and enduring rivalries (Claudio Cioffi-Revilla); origins of dyadic conflicts (Gary Goertz and Paul Diehl); conflict escalation and interstate crisis (Jonathan Wilkenfeld and Michael Brecher); and escalation processes (John Vasquez). Also new to the Handbook is the analysis of game theory, here represented by the work of James Morrow and a necessary corrective supplied by Jack Levy.
Important theoretical perspectives continued from the earlier Handbook are power transition and the power cycle (updated respectively by Jacek Kugler and Douglas Lemke, and Charles Doran) and concentration and deconcentration of global reach capabilities (Karen Rasler and William Thompson). Finally, Daniel Geller extensively reviews the major strains of empirical research on international warfare.
This book is the single most comprehensive treatment of systematic research by political scientists on the causes of large-scale political violence. Overall, it tells us how far the discipline has progressed in developing a scientifically based understanding of the causes of war.
Manus I. Midlarsky is Moses and Annuta Back Professor of International Peace and Conflict Resolution, Rutgers University-New Brunswick.

A to Z In Top Level Essays.......2000-10-17
The end of the Cold War has generated volumes of essays, books, and data as experts rush in to figure out why the end was not cataclisymic, and where the world going in terms of War. To the novice or dilitante in this field, the collection of essays Handbook II summarizes several aspects of the current debates on war and peace studies at a modest level of detail, within a readable size, and without having to own a library and dozens of subscriptions to professional journals. It covers very current topics such as terrorism and ethnic conflicts as well as the age-old arguments on balance of power. It also has organized all the referenced works into a gold-mine bibliography almost 100 pages long - giving new researchers and students a wonderful starting point for deeper digging.
Not a Tom Clancy read, but if you want fact, not fiction, it is great start on the theories about why we fight war.

Book Description
A Companion to Contemporary Britain covers the key themes and debates of twentieth-century history from the outbreak of the Second World War to the end of the century. Comprising 30 essays written by leading international scholars, it provides readers with a single-volume reference to the varied perspectives dominating historical writing on this period. The volume opens with an assessment of the impact of war, before moving on to examine Britain 's continuing role in the wider world, particularly the legacy of Empire, Britain 's 'special relationship ' with the United States, and integration with continental Europe. Domestic politics, the economy, society, and popular culture are also covered, including such topics as class consciousness, immigration and race relations, changing gender roles, and the impact of the mass media.Where essays include discussion of the last years of the century, they often present the first assessment of recent developments from a self-consciously historical perspective.

With insightful analysis, factual contextual information, and illuminating historical documents, this book provides a detailed, but broad perspective on the most destructive event in history. The literature analyzed in this book includes that of novelists and poets such as Joseph Heller, Norman Mailer, Irwin Shaw, Kurt Vonnegut, William Styron, Richard Wilbur, James Dickey, Paul West, and Bette Green. Each chapter provides a literary analysis of the most relevant literature for students on the topic of that chapter, followed by a historical overview of the aspect of the war that will aid the student to understand the historical context of the literature. Primary documents, especially interviews and memoirs, will help students to build bridges between history and the fictional accounts they read. Each chapter is followed by topics and questions for class discussion, suggestions for student papers, and a selected bibliography. This comprehensive casebook will be valuable for interdisciplinary study of World War II and the literature most frequently taught in high school English and history classes.

Book Description
A companion to World War II in Europe, Africa, and the Americas, this volume reevaluates the most enduring literature on basic aspects of the war in Asia and the Pacific. It also covers themes pertaining to societies at war, culture, the arts, and science and technology as well as international relations and the postwar world. Included are not only grand strategy, military and naval campaigns, and matters of diplomacy, but also resistance, collaboration, prisoners of war, and broad topics of the "home front," including chapters on gender issues, film, literature, popular culture, and propaganda. This volume and its companion provide the first comprehensive historiographic reference work on the war. Each chapter describes the state of knowledge on the topic, relating each bibliographic reference to the chapter's themes and issues, and concludes with a bibliography. Recent original scholarship is included when it aids new understanding, and older works of enduring value also find a place. The essays in this volume will interest scholars and college teachers as well as advanced students and serious amateurs seeking insight into the history of the war and its literature.

Book Description
A broadly interdisciplinary work, this handbook discusses the best and most enduring literature related to the major topics and themes of World War II. Military historiography is treated in essays on the major theaters of military operations and the related themes of logistics and intelligence, while political and diplomatic history is covered in chapters on international relations, resistance movements, and collaboration. The volume analyzes themes of domestic history in essays on economic mobilization, the home fronts, and women in the military and civilian life. The book also covers the Holocaust. This handbook approaches each topic from a global viewpoint rather than focusing on individual national communities. Except for nonprint material, the literature, research, and sources surveyed are primarily those available in English. The volume is aimed at both experts on the war and the general academic community and will also be useful to students and serious laymen interested in the war.
Book Description
Little scientific investigation has been directed toward the camp Lublin-Majdanek in central Poland, even though orthodox Holocaust sources claim that between 50,000 and over a million Jews were murdered there. Until the appearance of Concentration Camp Majdanek, the only works on Majdanek were authored by historians serving or trained under Poland's communist regime. Mattogno and Graf have filled this glaring research gap with a monumental study that expertly dissects and repudiates the myth of homicidal gas chambers at Majdanek. Based on exhaustive research of the primary sources and of the physical remainders of the former concentration camp, this book strikes a death blow to the lie of homicidal gassings at Majdanek. The authors' investigations lead to unambiguous and unsparing conclusions about the real history and the actual functioning of the camp which thoroughly destroy the official theses without excusing the abuses tolerated by Majdanek's wartime commanders. With Concentration Camp Majdanek, Mattogno and Graf have once again produced a careful, methodical investigative work that sets the standard for all other treatments of Majdanek.

Sixty Year Old Secrets Revealed For The First Time !!!.......2006-04-02
The previous so-called "reviewer" obviously never read the book, because they reviewed nothing; but rather just slammed it without reference to a single fact.
This book, like the others by this publisher, effectively blows the lid off another not so well kept secret of the so-called "holocaust"; the wild and unsubstantiated stories that came out of another one of the fabled concentration camps.
The authors do this not with feeble "eyewitness testimony", but with pure science - science that cannot be refutted or rebutted.
That is the real reason the holocaust zealots refuse to debate revisionists. They would loose.
Case closed
Graf at his BEST!.......2004-11-06
A revisionist classic that questions the Holocaust facts in a scholarly and academic and non-hateful and very loving way. Yet the publisher, Germar Rudolf, is in jail in Germany for THOUGHT CRIMES for writing "Lectures on the Holocaust."
Book Description
All around us birds are going about their lives, offering us fascinating insights into how they survive and interact with one another, defending territories, courting mates, nesting, raising young, displaying, preening, feeding, and more. The difference between noticing and missing these secret lives is a little time, a relaxed mind, and some curiosity. An introduction to the world of bird behavior, Secret Lives of Common Birds explores many of the most important tasks in the lives of the familiar birds that enrich our lives. Wildlife photographer Marie Read has a knack for capturing the most intimate, often dramatic moments in the activities of birds. In this book, her beautiful photographs of birds in action are paired with engaging and informative descriptions of behaviors that anyone might observe in the backyard or at a local park, pond, or woodland. Her lighthearted writing style is a delight as the reader travels through the seasons of the year and discovers the secret lives of common birds.
Customer Reviews:
Wonderful pictures!.......2007-10-17
The photographs are stunning, the text much less so. So I averaged 'wonderful' and 'ho-hum' and got four stars. It would make a great gift for an older bird lover or even for a mature child.
A Master Bird Photographer Delights Again.......2006-02-09
Marie Read is a masterful bird photographer. She has an amazing ability to capture on film not only a bird behavior but a glimpse into the creature's inner life. The photos are accompanied by insightful commentary with clever, irresistable section headings, bringing to the page suggestions of the inner life of the photographer herself. I am a longtime fan of Marie Read's work, and this book surpassed expectations!
Great book!.......2005-11-02
This book is fabulous! The photos are spectacular! The text is very well written. It is informative as well as entertaining. It would make a great gift for a bird lover or for someone new to birding. The book is very reasonably priced and well worth the money. Marie Read pays great attention to detail and the birds seem to come alive as you look at their photos. It is the best bird book I have ever seen!
wonderful mix of art and description.......2005-09-13
Stunning photos peppered with accurate, down to earth descriptions of bird behavior and its significance. An exquisite book that moves freely from the coffee table to the desk
A must have for good and bad days.......2005-09-13
Prof. Martin Wikelski, Princeton University
Marie Read is one of the best nature photographers of birds. But she is also a most gifted observer of bird behavior.
Her new book highlights - in breathtaking photography - what we all should know about the behavior of our most common and beloved feathered companions.
This book is a winner for keeping kids entertained for hours, and a pleasure to read on a porch while observing a plain old American Robin.
Everybody should have this book! Its refreshing, entertaining, educative and fun.
