The 3rd cause of death in the United States is, no, not AIDS or heart attacks, but from pharmaceutical drugs prescribed by doctors and properly administered. Shame on the FDA.
This book, The PDR Family Guide to Prescription Drugs is nothing more than an advertisement for the Drug Industry. The Physician's Desk Reference, on the other hand, is for medical doctors and contains vital information on all popular drugs prescribed today. Information from the pharmaceutical companies, how the drug should be used, how it should not be used, and most importantly, the contra-indications ("side-effects"). The side-effects of many of todays drugs are astounding and anyone considering taking them should be fully informed to make a conscious choice. The PDR (Physicians Desk Reference) for the current year is the book to buy for this vital information, not the Family Guide.

5 out of 5 stars Great treatment of pivotal moment in Korean War.......2000-12-05

COL Heinl's teatment of the landing at Inchon is thorough and informative. It is a story of a highly complex operation that was run on a shoestring and high expectations of failure. He gives you a feeling of you are there at the planning sessions, and as the ships lurch from Japan to Korea in a typhoon. You are there when the LSTs come into the beaches, which have the second laargest tidal ranges in the world, and dry out when the tide recedes. Your are there when the Marines reach the seawall and have to scale it using ladders.

There were casualties at Inchon but I get the feeling that if there had been a more determined enemy resistance, the outcome of the operation might have been different.

This book is a must for an understanding of the first months of America's involvement in the Korean War. It should be on everyone's shelf as it is of great value to understanding why we are still in Korea fifty years after the invasion at Inchon.

    Book Description

Few American Indian tribal names are as well recognized as that of the Mohicans. Yet little is actually known about the people themselves, despite legendary images fixed by James Fenimore Cooper. Now we have the first thoroughly researched and documented study of the Stockbridge, Massachusetts, Mohicans, and it reveals a story fully as interesting as any fiction and more meaningful.

5 out of 5 stars A tribute to a great but little-known group of Americans.......2003-10-09

The story of the Muh-he-kan-nuk, or the Mahicans (but better known as Mohicans), is a story of triumph through hardship. Now in Wisconsin, this native American people migrated from their home in the Berkshires of Western Massachussetts via a brief stay in New York state. This is their story, how they lived when the European immigrant population began to grow and encroach on their lands, and how they openly embraced Christianity, in spite of how they were often treated by "the white man" -- who were mostly protestant Christians. More fascinating is how the Stockbridge Indians, in spite of their treatment by the white settlers, have been very supportive of the American experience and have a long history of fighting patriotically in wars for the United States' cause from the very beginning.

After a brief ancient history of the amazing people called the Muh-he-kan-nuk, Frazier tells the story of the early 18th-century Chief Konkapot and his delegation to the Massachussetts Bay Colony requesting that a missionary be sent to teach them about the Christian religion. A teacher, Mr. Timothy Woodbridge, and the missionary Rev. John Sergeant, were commissioned to go and live among the Mahicans to teach them the Christian faith and English civilization. The story is fascinating, and Frazier reports very realistic and deals honestly with both the good and the bad that were both a result and a backlash of the missionary endeavors. Most people know the popular history that the Rev. Jonathan Edwards spent part of his time as a missionary to the Stockbridge Indians before his fatal presidency at Princeton. But very few realise that he was not the first to work among them. John and Abigail Sergeant were my 6th- or 7th- generation grandparents through my paternal grandmother, so this story is of particular interest to me. The occasion for Edwards' arrival in Stockbridge was two-fold: firstly, he had been oustered by his congregation at Northampton, Connecticut, and secondly, the pastor of the Mahicans John Sergeant had died of tuberculosis.

Many modern historians blame missionaries for proselytizing native Americans, but this story shows that the Stockbridge Indians, through Chief Konkapot, requested the assistance of the Christian European American settlers in an effort to preserve their culture. Likely, if it was not for the missionary and educational work among the Mahicans, the white settlers may well have taken far more advantage of the Indians than they already had, as unfortunately history all-to-often reveals. For the times, Woodbridge and Sergeant showed great interest in preserving the native culture, while introducing Western European Christianity to them. Also, Edwards, quite the remarkable intellectual genius, composed a grammar of the Mahican language (a reprint is available here at Amazon). While often patronizing to a fault, perhaps their efforts to "anglicize" the Indians in the long run helped this tribe to learn to survive amidst encroachment, as well as served to preserve their indigenous culture. Frazier seems to present this argument well, thoroughly dealing with the downside of the white man's influences of the times.

I highly recommend this book to all who have an interest in Colonial American history, the development and history of American Religion, and especially the history and plight of our Native American citizens, who are equal under the law, but who in sad reality have been snubbed throughout the history of our imperfect nation. Rather than aggrandizing my great-grandfather or the other missionaries and educators who tried to help this people in a less-than-perfect and infantile American civilization, Frazier's book is an overdue tribute to the legacy and national courage of the Mahicans of Stockbridge, to whom a great debt of gratitude is owed.

            Book Description

Thailand is the mecca of birding in Southeast Asia. It's convenient to get to and get around, and its birdlife is wondrously diverse, exotic, and plentiful. With Birds of Thailand, Craig Robson and fourteen leading illustrators give us the most up-to-date, comprehensive, and concise field guide to this magnificent country's rich avifaunal heritage in recent years, covering the more than 950 species recorded as of early in the new millennium.

Facing each of the 128 striking, full-color plates are species accounts accompanied by maps for each, illustrating precise distribution within Thailand. The accurate text covers identification, voice, habitat, behavior, range, status, and breeding for all species and subspecies. Illustrations and entries on a number of species recorded only quite recently are also included.

The country's varied habitats assure something for every birder, from freshwater marshes to coastal areas, from fields and rice paddies to lush jungles and mangrove forests. In Thailand, one can delight in the brilliantly colored pittas, broadbills, and sunbirds; the deep, dazzling green of barbets, parrots, parakeets, and leafbirds; the aptly named frogmouths; the roosterlike resplendence of the (male) red junglefowl; the ruff, whose breeding male in full plumage sports a truly singular head; and much, much more.

Birders and all ecologically minded travelers daydreaming of a voyage to this gem of a country will want the latest source of thorough information on its birdlife--in a highly portable, pithy, and vividly illustrated guide. What they will want is Craig Robson's Birds of Thailand.

5 out of 5 stars the Asian Paradise Flycatcher of bird books.......2006-09-03

BIRDS OF THAILAND is the reason the prestige university press and its zero-tolerance approach to schlock products exists. Princeton University Press has done itself proud with this condensed and focused version of author Robson's BIRDS OF SOUTHEAST ASIA.

If you're interested in the birds that inhabit a medium-sized country like Thailand, you don't have many choices in field guides and you may not have many friends. At least, friends who share your precise and tiny interest. For that reason, this review should be read as a referendum upon the PRINCETON FIELD GUIDES as much as on this individual volume.

A field guide's physical quality matters more than with other books since you're meant to carry the thing around. The PFG is quality construction through and through and just compact enough to make for convenient traveling.

The choice of a small font size in Garamond BookCondensed is a wise one, providing exceptional clarity and saving space for the beautiful and competent illustrations (drawn, not photographed).

Because the majority of birders are English speakers by first or second language, bird guides that cover species native to non-English speaking countries often read as though the people who live there (with the birds!) don't exist. This may be a pecadillo rather than a felony, since - after all - such a book is about *birds*, not people. Yet Robson's guide adds the nice touch of Thai indices and page headings, no doubt appreciated by the local colleagues who are necessary participants in a project of this high quality.

The Princeton Field Guides include volumes on mammals as well as birds, with a penchant for out-of-the-way locations. If your interest takes you there, any one of these Guides is a worthy investment you'll not regret.

3 out of 5 stars small means handy but limited.......2002-07-02

I took this book to Thailand in 1999 with the full knowledge that it does not contain all the birds that I would most likely encounter, but its handy size and weight did fit the bill.

Unfortunately, it seemed that half the birds I saw weren't in the book, but maybe that was just my luck. In addition, due to space constraints, geographical distribution descriptions were vague, so I was left wondering if the sunbird I saw was the one pictured or it was another similar one mentioned but not pictured nor fully described.

Instead, I relied on a fat book available from a publisher in Bangkok (written in English) that both my hotel hostess and my hired guide used in Chiang Mai.

All in all, this small guide is good if you have concerns about weight and space and don't mind not knowing what species of sunbird you're looking at. It's also good for getting a general idea of the variety of Thai bird species.

                  Book Description

This book explores in detail the little-known system of ancient bird-shaped weights from Northern Thailand and Burma. The weights are carefully described and analyzed as to their origin anduse, their mass scale and its relation to other mass scales, their composition and production techniques, and their shapes and symbolism.

Although historical records fail to mention much about the ancient weights in Southeast Asia, fortunately, records of European traders and of Arab, Persian, and Chinese travelers from previous centuries do exist, and provide an opportunity for comparison. Donald and Joan Gear broaden their study to consider the historical context of the Lan Na weights, comparing them with the weight systems found in surrounding areas. They conclude that from about the 11th century until the mid-16th century, the bird-shaped weights were most likely used by traders along the route through Raheng and Martaban to Pegu.

Of interest to historians, collectors, antiquarians, and scholars of Southeast Asia, this unique volume discloses the curious and intricate world of ancient bird-shaped weights.

Luxuriant tropical plants, colourful birds, and abundant wildlife have inspired Thai artists since neolithic times. Thais have blended these familiar motifs with the foreign designs of India, China, Sri Lanka, Persia, Burma, Cambodia, and Europe to create a unique repertory of decorative art. These birds, beasts, and blossoms ornament the fine arts of painting and sculpture as well as the crafts of ceramics, textiles, wood and ivory carvings, silver repousse, lacquerware, nielloware, and mother-of-pearl inlay. Following age-old traditions, Thais decorate their temples, palaces, and village huts with a unique mixture of realistic and mythic, native and foreign design. Devout Buddhist patrons commission artists to adorn their temples with detailed statues, elaborate architectural fittings, furniture, and utensils. Artists continue to create sumptuous works of gold, silver, or precious gems for Thai royalty. Ordinary Thais, even today, enliven their existence with nature motifs: women wear bright skirts decorated with lush flowers, rural villagers carve elephants on their ox-carts. Unfortunately, modern adornment often lacks the vitality of earlier works. Few older pieces have survived the destruction of war, tropical heat, rain, and insects. Yet, those articles that remain are a legacy to a distinctive Thai art that delights in sinuous vines, flickering flames, budding flowers, flitting birds, and gambolling beasts. This book traces the evolution of nature motifs and explores their symbolism in Thai crafts and fine arts.
