Product Description

Parents will help children identify the beauty and hope in all cycles of life as they follow two insect friends, Lea and Nym, and the struggles one of them endures when her friend disappears. This is a tender story about loss and change, written to help parents express their views about life and death. The book may serve many purposes, such as comforting a grieving child who has lost someone close or providing facts about dragonflies to inquisitive minds. Lea's transformation into a dragonfly may even be used as a metaphor for life-after-death. The Dragonfly Door is beautifully illustrated by award-winning artist Barbara L. Gibson. The book is cherished by parents, grandparents and teachers. It was recently brought to life as a mini-play in Alabama to help children cope with the loss of their classmates. The following is an excerpt from the book: While Nym slept, she heard Lea's voice saying, "Follow me, Nym. I'm going to show you where I am." "Will I see you again?" Nym asked. "Only when it's time for you to die too," Lea replied. "You won't see me in the marsh ever again. But let me show you what I will look like the next time you see me. Here, close your eyes." Nym closed her eyes. "Now look at me," Lea said. Nym opened her eyes and saw ...

5 out of 5 stars The warm, emotional colors of award-winning artist Barbara L. Gibson.......2007-09-07

The debut children's picturebook of author John Adams, The Dragonfly Door dares to confront serious topics - of loss, death, grieving, and transition. Nym and Lea are two close insect friends, but one day after Nym yells at Lea, Lea disappears. Nym searches everywhere for her missing friend, and can't find her. At last Nym falls asleep, grief-stricken, and finally hears Lea's voice one more time. "'I died and went to this special place,' Lea said, her voice full of love. 'But I didn't want you to leave,' Nym pleaded. 'I'm sorry I yelled.' 'I know you're sorry,' Lea assured her. 'I left because my water nymph body died while I was picking flowers in the reeds, not because you yelled.'" The warm, emotional colors of award-winning artist Barbara L. Gibson illustrate this highly recommended picturebook for sharing the bittersweet realities of life with young people.

5 out of 5 stars Jewel's Reading Excellence Review: Helps children understand nature's life cycle.......2007-05-10

John Adams brilliantly invites the reader into the world of Nymphs and Dragonflies to explore the changes that take place when Nym's friend goes to a special place.

When I had lost a family member I had read a wonderful story called, "The Water Bug Story." John Adams adds a fresh approach to this story by focusing on friendship loss and giving a voice to his characters. With the help of Gibson's eye-catching nature illustrations, "The Dragon Fly Door" answers general questions surrounding loss, such as feelings about loss, what happens to the nymph's body when he dies, and how a nymph is transformed into a dragonfly.

Adams creatively normalizes typical friendship rivalry and takes the reader on a nature journey to discover that one chooses to resolve conflict, loss, and changes in different ways. Adams concludes the book with uncomplicated educational facts for the inquisitive science mind.

This is a great educational tool for parents, grandparents or professionals to use to help explain the uncontrollable life cycle changes and loss.

5 out of 5 stars A Message of Hope for Children Who Are Grieving.......2007-02-26

As President of a nonprofit organization that reaches out to those who are grieving, I was very pleased to read a book such as The Dragonfly Door. This book provides a much needed way to offer children (and adults) a message of hope following the death of a loved one.

Children can relate to the playful nature of Nym and Lea who are the two young nymph friends, the sorrow of Nym when Lea dies, and the comforting feeling when when Nym realizes that he will one day see Lea again as a dragonfly, when he too has made his transformation into a dragonfly.

Our nonprofit organization recommends this book so highly that we have decided to make it available for purchase at all of our events.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful and excellent for all who grieve.......2007-02-18

I received this wonderfully beautiful book on the 8th anniversary of my son's graduation to Heaven ... that evening, I was able to read it with his daughter, who is now 9... I believe she gained another understanding of her Very Own Daddy in a beautiful place that we have not seen just yet ... and though she already knew he is waiting for her, this was another good reminder of that ... I was unaware of the dragonfly's life cycle and was so blessed to see how it seemingly parallels this life and the next. Thank you, John, for a wonderful way to help us all in our continuing journey with grief and the Hope we can have.

    5 out of 5 stars Great 1 a.m. reference book.......2007-07-25

Dr. Kelly is our pediatrician, and when we met her during our pregnancy visit, we were given a copy of the previous edition. There were many nights when we would pull out this book to figure out when and if we should panic... it was a good guide for new parents. We still used it occasionally with our 2nd child, when we needed a reminder of what to do for croup or how long to store breast milk or whatever.

5 out of 5 stars A good book for new parents.......2007-01-26

This was a very insightful book that covered almost everything that a baby could need. I suggest reading this before getting a baby, because it will show you the responsibilities that you're going to have to do when you get one. It has a lot of black and white illustrations, mainly drawings of certain procedures like CPR which guide you well.

4 out of 5 stars Recommend to any parents to be!.......2005-09-17

This is a great book. Like it says it covers just about everything you need to know about the babys first year of their life! Might not be a good review, but if you dont know what to expect with your newborn this book is a must.

4 out of 5 stars A good book for new fathers.......2000-05-09

It's hard to find a more crowded section of a bookstore than the pregnancy/parenting section (unless it is the computer guides for dummies section) But how many different caring-for-babies books does a new parent need? Hopefully only one or two, but keep in mind there are different books for different personality types and needs.

Which is why "First-Year Baby Care" makes a good book for a new father. Written by a pediatrician and mother, it contains all the necessary information in an easy-to-use, nicely illustrated format. But doesn't have the personal vignettes and "tales from the front lines" advice that books like "What to Expect When You're Expecting" have, advice and personal accounts that I found comforting as a new mother. I would suspect fathers would benefit more from a book like this, with it's "cut-to-the-chase and tell me how to diaper this baby" approach.

            Book Description

Son of the victor of Jutland, George Jellicoe has enjoyed power and privilege but never shirked his duty. His war exploits are legendary and, as a founder member of Stirling's SAS and first Commander of the Special Boat Service, he saw action a-plenty. A brigadier at 26 with a DSO and MC he liberated Athens as the Germans withdrew and saved Greece from a Communist revolution.

After the war Jellicoe joined the Foreign Office and worked with spies Burgess, Philby and Maclean in Washington and on the Soviet Desk. His political life saw him in the Cabinet of the Heath Government and he is frank with his biographer over the issues and characters of his fellow ministers.

Jellicoe's Achilles heel is his weakness for, and attraction to, women. His resignation over an involvement with a prostitute was a national scandal but he is refreshingly honest and devoid of self-justification. He remained an active member of the Lords pursuing a top level business career.

A British Achilles is a superb biography of a major public figure and exemplary wartime soldier.

              Book Description

Featuring as many as 175 birds apiece and nearly 300 photographs, illustrations and maps, this handy, informative book adds two Pacific Northwestern states to National Geographic's growing series of field guides. Like its predecessors, this guide provides birders with quick and easy access to the kind of specific facts and savvy advice that they need: a regional map of birding hotspots; a knowledgeable introduction by a local expert on which birds to look for, where to find them, and what to focus on when they appear; a section on birding basics, field identification, and how to make the best use of the guide and its resources; scores of individual entries with photographs of each bird, recognition tips, and notes on behavior, habitat, and particular sites; and two indexes: one color-coded, the other alphabetical with life list boxes. An ideal solution for visitors looking to make the most of limited time and a valuable reference for anyone who lives in the region, these books belong in every birder's library, beginner and veteran alike.

Washington & Oregon: a diverse mix of coastal, mountain, forest, and plains species make the Northwest a birder's paradise whose avian highlights include the elusive Blue Grouse, the colorful, shore-dwelling Rhinoceros Auklet, the dramatic and powerful Canada Goose, and the Tufted Puffin, among many others.

4 out of 5 stars Birds of Oregon Field Guide.......2007-10-12

My favorite field guide so far. Easy to use and good photos. It can be hard to "look" up a bird as they are arranged by color only rather than type and color. I have had some trouble finding a bird based on color for instance: I will see a bird that I consider mostly brown, but the book considers the bird to be mostly gray. So you have to check all possible colors for the bird.

I was soo addicted to my old Peterson guide, and I bought this for my Mom, who loves the format. After using it a few times, I like it better. Its a good little, usable field guide. Now we keep three bird books in a basket with two sets of glasses everytime we sit out in the yard. Mom grabs this one first, then I wrestle it away from her. Pity summers ending.
wish I could buy a copy of his birds of Willamette valley on amazon.

I like this book because it is simple and easy to use. Because it is color coded by birds. Its great for the beginner birder. Plus it let's you check off the birds you have seen in the back of the book. I would definatly recommend this book to any beginner birder as their first book of purchase!

The Malheur National Wildlife Refuge in southeast Oregon is internationally known to ornithologists and birders. Throughout the year, but especially during spring and autumn migrations, hundreds of thousands of birds can be seen on the refuge. Birds of Malheur National Wildlife Refuge, Oregon provides the first exhaustive report on the 312 species recorded here over the last 110 years.

                For each species you'll learn
                * How common it is on the refuge
                * Where it is likely to be found on the refuge
                * Dates of its earliest, latest, and most frequent sightings on the refuge

C.D. Littlefield is a legendary figure to western birders and an internationally recognized expert on the birds of Malheur, particularly the Sandhill Crane.
