Labor room companions can use this book as a childbirth class refresher course during the nine month and as a bedside manual that clearly spells out "what to do when." Jones, a leading childbirth educator, covers every potentially troublesome situation that may arise. A must-have book, if only for the emergancy delivery instructions.

Juliet Barker surveys the tournament in England from its first emergence in the twelfth century to the beginning of the fifteenth, when it was revolutionised by the emergence of technical changes which altered its very nature. The original publication of this study, deriving from Juliet Barker's PhD thesis supervised by Maurice Keen, reestablished the importance of the tournament at the heart of medieval chivalric culture. The first serious scholarly publication for over half a century, it dramatically reawakened interest in the historical context of tournaments, and is especially valuable for its detailed evidence on the early years. Tournaments are shown as far more than just sport. They had wide political, social and military implications; in England their potential as a political instrument was quickly realised: for the disaffected they became a means of rebellion and feuding, but for the king and court they were a powerful propaganda machine. Participation in tournaments was also a way to earn a coveted reputation for chivalry; the passion for tourneying could bring knights lasting fame. Military demands accounted for the increasing sophistication of armour and weapons, partly in response to the demands of the tourneyers, who needed military training that reflected their role in actual combat. This wide-ranging study looks at the tournament from all these angles, and in so doing produces an exemplary history of the first three hundred years of their development. JULIET BARKER is a well-known broadcaster and writer, whose other books include The Brontes and Wordsworth: A Life in Letters.

Unless you can read Old French..........2005-01-23

As the previous reviewer noted, this book contains entire passages of quotations in untranslated Old French. I am, admittedly, an amateur scholar/enthusiast, but I cannot believe it possible that a large percentage of this book's target readership is fluent in Old French! Would it really have been so much trouble for the editors to provide footnotes of translation?

A little academic in structure but excellent.......2004-01-20

While the nature of this work is very academic, it is so well writen that it becomes a pleasure to read. Full of interesting examples and stories, the author is careful to put everything in context. It contains none of the usual "conservative for the sake of it" attitude that can be so annoying in more academic history books. If you have any intrest in hastiludes then you will love this book. The only reason I didn't give it 5 stars is none of the quotes are translated.

Turn-of-the-Century Design: A Warped View.......2001-05-05

The remark that this book "traces this aesthetic revolution..and is a compleling guide through the founding years of Modernism" rings false after even a cursery examination. Frank Lloyd Wright, one of the great architectural geniuses of the period, is represented by a chair. Grueby Faience is given a reproduction, but Greene & Greene and Bernard Maybeck are not mentioned. Several of Otto Wagner's students are repesented, but he does not appear. Gaudi and Horta cannot be found. Josef Hoffmann, the great genius of Secessionism, is poorly represented and two of his most famous chairs are attributed to Kammerer. Tiffany appears to be a minor window designer. Etc. One suspects that the authors saved photos in a shoebox and threw this series together. This is a great idea that is unfortunately very slovenly assembled and ultimately serves to distort and flatten this inventive and extravegent period of architecture and art. Taschen and his authors should be ashamed of this endeavor.

Great Pictures of 1909.......2000-09-23

This book has great pictures of 1909, they are wonderful to study. It only covers 1909 and not the rest of the early 1900's during which there were lots of fashion changes. Right after this time period there were further changes so it's a good stopping point. Dover is great for those of us who are looking at vintage fashion!

This is reprint of a 1909 catalog. Catalogs are a great reference for looking at clothes because they are always shown clearly, from head to toe, and in all the important details are pointed out for you. This book is an excellent resource for inspiration for suit jackets, skirts, lace blouses, inimate apparel, and heirloom clothing for children.

Around 430 species of birds have been recorded in the Caribbean, of which an amazing 159 are endemic. Central America has a species list of about 1,350, with some 340 endemics. This book treats over 215 individual sites in detail, covering every Central American country, Mexico, and all of the popular Caribbean islands. Detailed site accounts enable birders to maximize their chances of finding the special birds of each region, from the spectacular Resplendent Quetzal of Costa Rica's cloud forest to the threatened Imperial Parrot of Dominica. Endemic species for each site and region are listed separately, and the accounts include practical information on accommodation, transport, safety, and the timing of visits. Other interesting wildlife is also listed for each site, and numerous site maps and line drawings further enhance the text. The information presented is succinct, yet detailed enough for readers to work out their own itineraries with a minimum of time and effort.

a gem addition to a birder's library.......2007-04-18

I've had this book for a few years and find myself often referring to it. I use it to look up specific birding locations mainly in Central America and Mexico but also browse it for fun reading about some of the Caribbean Islands.

For a 436 page book about a region as large and biologically diverse as Mexico, Central America and the Caribbean this is an excellent resource. As mentioned in the previous review the section on Mexico is limited (only 57 pages)but there are other good alternatives for an in-depth treatment of Mexican birding locations such as Steven Howell's excellent "A Bird-Finding Guide to Mexico" or Roland Wauer's more literary "Birder's Mexico". Additionally there are books such as Aaron Seekerak's "Travel and Site Guide to Birds of Costa Rica with side trips to Panama and Nicaragua" that can fill in the gaps of Wheatley and Brewer's book but this book is worthwhile for covering the entire region and being very detailed and informative for each site.

As an example of the books treatment of sites I chose El Salvador, a place I thought was entirely deforested and not often mentioned by birders. The chapter on El Salvador is eight pages long and lists 6 major sites and shows the locations on a country map at the beginning of the chapter. There are two pages of text describing the country, the transportation issues, accommodations, food, health and safety, climate and trip timing, conservation, bird families, bird species, and trip expectations. The site accounts follow and contain a brief description of the area, specialty birds found there (difficult to locate in other areas) endemics, and others (widespread species that are found at the site), and a paragraph on directions and access. One of the six sites (Cerro )Verde had a detailed area map. Apparently if you ever find yourself in El Salvador you can go birding.

Throughout the book, sites that refer to specific neighborhoods, roadsides, forests etc. will often be accompanied by a small detail map. A country road map would still be a necessary accompaniement to this book.

I highly recommend this book if you would like a resource to consider when trying to make a decision about a region or country to visit and then once you have decided, use this book and any other more country specific book for your trip. This book was written in 2000 so always check the internet for updated information about each country before traveling.

A good trip planning resource.......2003-06-11

This book is one of a series by Nigel Wheatley (I think that this is the only one co-authored by David Brewer) which covers many of the world's birding hotspots. All make for good reading for the traveling birder, and are especially good during the very earliest phase of trip planning - ie, choosing a destination. Considering the scope of the book, it is understandably brief and shallow, which is its greatest shortcoming. I could envision the next edition doubling in girth, and still omitting a lot! The segment on Mexico is particularly skimpy - whole regions, rich with endemic birds, are left out - such as the Acapulco/Guerrero region. On the other hand, the Lesser Antilles are treated a bit more completely. But, this book (and the series) is really the first of its kind, and every serious or casual neotropical birder will benefit from reading it.
