5 out of 5 stars understanding myself.......2007-05-01

After reading Stepping Out of the Bubble a year ago, I went back and read it again for a second time. I was able to pick up even more information this time around that helped me understand and overcome some of my own internal conflicts. This is a book you can read at any point in your life and always find information that pertains to that particular moment. Krehbiel has a way of explaining things that others may consider unexplainable. Whether you are a student, a teacher, or just a guy like me, this book can and will change your life.

5 out of 5 stars A practical resource for better living.......2006-03-27

For me, "Stepping Out Of The Bubble" was reminiscent of the renowned books of author, M. Scott Peck, in the style of presenting profound insights into sensible, easy-to-understand language and clear ideas an average person can relate to. Practicing Licensed Professional Counselor and Nationally Certified Cognitive-Behavioral Therapist and author of "Stepping Out Of The Bubble", James Krehbiel proficiently shares a portion of his expertise, condensing great weight into accessible and workable solutions for a more fulfilling life's plan.

The "bubble" represents our security and comfort zone, but it is also the inner place where we store the pain of our past experiences and the unpleasant reality of that not being made conscious which keeps us bound in unhealthy and self-defeating patterns. Staying within this bubble limits our emotional responsiveness as we numb ourselves to the coexistence even as unresolved issues unconsciously filter forth. To step outside of the bubble is to courageously examine the contents in all honesty and to face life's reality outside of the bubble. Once outside the bubble, one can move forward to experience life in more emotional depth, fullness and passion. "Being a fully functioning individual is about being true to whom you are and letting things be the way they are," explains author, James Krehbiel.

With brilliant and compassionate understanding, Mr. Krehbiel briefly details methods used and pertinent case examples within his therapy practice. "Self-regulation is a goal of therapy. I educate people in the fact that all the answers are ultimately within." "Stepping Out Of The Bubble" strives to do the same, by giving information on how we become trapped in the bubble and how beneficial the making of conscious choices to leave, can be.

Some of the many topics included within this book are: being assertive, characteristics of an "authentic" person, the integration of each of our different personality parts, the difference between true guilt and false guilt, setting boundaries, addictions and addictions to "manic" relationships, awareness (staying in the moment or mindfulness), grounding, honoring one's inner voice, panic attacks, OCD and mood disorders. The section regarding kids and parenting was exceptional, in my opinion, and I found many points about discipline that made much sense. Also appreciated was the section relating to religion (dogma) versus faith (spiritual) as well as what needed to be said about pop culture.

I enjoyed reading "Stepping Out Of The Bubble" and would recommend it to anyone. It is enriching and inspirational.

Stepping Out Of The Bubble by James P. Krehbiel, Is an outstanding book on Counseling Therapy. Krehbiel, is able to put life patterns and fears into perspective so that the lay person can fully understand the mystery that most think is behind counseling. His approach to show that so much of what we seek answers for is within ourselves and with the right counsellor we can become free and step out of the Bubble or Bubbles that a lot of us are in.

This book should be a gift to every teen and their parents, no home should be without it.

5 out of 5 stars Gaining Courage to Live Outside of the Bubble.......2006-02-25

James P. Krehbiel's Stepping Out of the Bubble was a fascinating read. I found myself underlining various passages. His explanation of how we get stuck in the bubble (comfort zone), and how we find our way out is powerful. It provided me with hope as I move through my own personal journey. I found myself experiencing an emotional reaction to many of the case examples and concepts he explored. He definitely hit some "hot buttons" in my life. But Mr. Krehbiel also provided specific guidelines and tools for stepping out of the bubble. At one point he says, "Courage can be defined by those who live outside the bubble as opposed to those who live in it. I like to compare stepping out of the bubble to wading into the water."

His chapter which includes ideas on multidimensional thinking is appropriate in today's political climate. He indicates that true dialogue takes into consideration the appreciation for differences in opinions. He makes some profound statements about pop culture's affect on the lives of today's children. He also gives parents tools and resources for assisting their children in bettering their behavior. The book ends with a resounding "yes" to life with a hopeful, powerful way of perceiving and reframing life's problems. This was an excellent book!

5 out of 5 stars My Review of a Great Book.......2006-02-23

"Stepping Out of the Bubble : Reflections On the Pilgrimage of Counseling Therapy by James P. Krehbiel is an amazing and outstanding book that provides help and direction to the many people that are suffering from problems described in this book.

I was amazed at how many of the problems and challenges, that the author writes about, are problems and challenges I have seen many people suffer with.

The counseling theory and practice information in this book provides a direction for people that have a problem and are willing to go to counseling and risk moving forward in their journey toward finding personal growth and development, and eventually stepping out of the bubble.

Many people have problems and challenges that they never seek help for and they and their loved ones continue to suffer. This book goes a long way in bringing the thought of counseling to people and helping people to better understand the counseling process.

To author James P. Krehbiel thank you for writing your great book. I am convinced your book will help many people and because of your book many more people will step out of the bubble. I recommend this book very highly and also feel it would be a great college text.

I have to tell you the true the format of the Osprey Books is not my favorite but I can Not lie about the Uniforms Plates, they are one of the best may be not the most accurate but they are truly beatiful and great, the work of Angus McBride is one of the best modern Illustrator. May be the content is not new for the Napoleonic Historian but if you are beigining to study more about this Elite Guard this is the one to start. Book Description

In the armies of the Napoleonic era, the cavalry formed an important part of the army. But the winning of the battle is in the detail - the proper management of those arms. In this book, companion to the similar work on infantry, the author looks toward what actually happened in the battles of the period, rather than what should have occurred, according to the regulations. The cavalry's weapons are examined: the use of the carbines and swords, the manner in which they were used in attack and defence, exemplified by contemporary accounts and illustrations.

2 out of 5 stars Better for someone who is new to Napoleonics.......2002-05-30

Nicely bound with a beautiful cover, I found this book to be greatly disappointing.
On the other hand, I feel that this book would be nice for a newcomer to Napoleonics. While the book has many illustrations, none are in color. When a photograph of a sword or pistol would do, a drawing is substituted. It is definitely overpriced. (I can go on, but I won't.)
Needless to say that as one who has already 200 Napoleonic titles in his library, I won't be buying the companion book about Napoleonic Infantry. Why they made it a hard bound book is bizarre.
On second thought, since I learned (yesterday) that the publisher doesn't accept unsolicited manuscripts from would-be authors, I won't be buying any books from them.

From the opening years of the 19th century, which saw the first moves towards standardisation and the beginnings of the demise of the system which allowed the colonels of regiments so much say in the equipping of their troops, through the influences of the Napoleonic Wars to the inevitable demise of the horse in military service brought about by the mechanisation prior to the Second World War, this authoritative text examines in detail the historical development of British cavalry equipment 1800-1941.

    4 out of 5 stars Useful Overview.......2001-12-30

The author served after the British Cavalry was dismounted so he has no more experience with this materiel than I have with US Cavalry material. But that is not to say that neither of us do not know what we are covering, it just means we have to have done our research. By the time I was a grown man, the only cavalry I ever saw was led by John Wayne in Fort Apache when I was a boy. :) And I do not remember ever meeting a horse cavalryman in my life.
I certainly found a little on the British equipment while researching ours, and discovered the fact that the famous US issue "Patton" saber, M 1913, was copied directly from the British pattern 1908. Of course, give Patton credit for seeing a good thing. At the time most of our cross cultural influence was French.
Well, enough of this, if you have an interest buy it. If not, don't.

    Book Description

During the Napoleonic era, Russia possessed a vast force of cavalry, forming a greater percentage than that of most European armies. This stemmed partly from their service against the Turks, who had huge numbers of troops, and partly from the fact that much Russian terrain was suitable for the manoeuvre of large bodies of cavalry. This companion volume to Men-at-Arms 185 examines the organisation, tactics and uniforms of the Russian cavalry during this dynamic and turbulent period, covering Cuirassiers, Dragoons, Hussars, Uhlans, Mounted Jägers and the Lifeguard, as well as the Opolchenie militia and Cossacks.

4 out of 5 stars A Great Visual Resource on the Napoleonic Wars.......2000-06-06

The Men-at Arms series continues in this volume on the Russian Infantry during the Napoleonic Wars. This book, while it does not go into depth about the history of the conflict, does provide a visual resource that is invaluable for history buffs and professional television and film designers alike. The book uses more second hand sources than one might wish, but all the information is clear and concise.

          Book Description

Birds of Ecuador comprehensively treats the nearly 1600 species of birds that can be found in mainland Ecuador. The authors describe Ecuador this way:

"One of the wonders of the natural world. Nowhere else is such incredible avian diversity crammed into such a small country. . . . Birds are, happily, numerous in many parts of Ecuador: even the downtown parks of the big cities such as Quito and Guayaquil host their complement."

Volume I, Status, Distribution, and Taxonomy, contains detailed information on the ecology, status, and distribution of all species. Introductory chapters deal with geography, climate, and vegetation; bird migration in Ecuador; Ecuadorian ornithology; endemic bird areas in Ecuador; and conservation. Individual species accounts treat habitat, distribution, and taxonomy.

Volume II, Field Guide, contains 96 full-color plates and facing pages of descriptive text, a color map of Ecuador, 2 line drawings of bird anatomy, 115 silhouette outlines, and nearly 1600 distribution maps. All species are illustrated in full color, including migrants and vagrants and visually distinctive subspecies. The text focuses on the field identification aspects of each species, including their behavior, vocalizations, and nest appearance.

The two volumes are available separately or may be purchased as a slipcased set.

3 out of 5 stars The field guide that is not a field guide.......2007-08-08

This is an exhaustive book with brilliant drawings - but not a field guide. Forget what the publishers say about two volumes and this one being the field guide. It's hideously impractical. It's over 700 pages, thicker than your fist, and a HEAVY load to be lugging around and getting it into an out of your backpack, especially when hiking or navigating slippery jungle trails in the sweltering heat. That said, I don't know of any other field guide and let's face it, we birders need a field guide. As many others I have had the plates with the drawings taken out and bound into a 'new' book, and brought only that with me. It's suboptimal, but hey, what can you do.

          4 out of 5 stars Beggers can't be choosers..........2007-04-27

This is really the only option if you're traveling to Ecuador to bird and it's a great book as those before me have said. It's very hefty, both in information and in physical size. It's overwhelming sure, but so is birding in the tropics. The plates are pretty good, though some are laughably awkward, the raptors for instance. I didn't choose to bind the plates separately in my copy when I went, I carried the whole text in my backpack. It was heavy and sort of obnoxious to keep pulling it out to refer, but what are you gonna do?

Those are really the only complaints, and by and large it's well worth the money and there's nothing else you would choose to take to Ecuador. I'm certainly glad I have it.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent and Informative Book.......2007-03-09

A great book if you are planning a birding trip to Ecuador. Very thorough and informative. Although a little bulky to carry around, I suggest taking out the plate pages with all the bird pictures and reading up on them at the end of the day. It's a shame to rip apart a wonderful book like this but it really was a space and weigh saver

5 out of 5 stars Here they are.......2007-02-17

This book is described as a field guide, but it is rather large and heavy for that. A friend who has traveled often to pursue the sight of the birds of the world gave me this advice: Take the book to Kinkos, or some such place, and have the center removed and bound. This book is suitable for that. All the color plates are in the center; a page of descriptions is opposite each plate. Of course when you return from your trip you can keep the two together with no more inconvenience than one has anyway with a bird book which has all the plates in the middle.

The rest of the book consists of more extensive descriptions of each bird and has a map for each, giving its range. This book is intended to be only half of a two volume set, the other volume being -- I don't know what, since I don't have it -- but of interest only to the most serious ornithologist who might be spending a long time in Ecuador.

4 out of 5 stars Essential, but overwhelming..........2006-10-31

The Birds of Ecuador Field Guide is a spectacular but overwhelming book, essential for any birding trip to Ecuador, and very useful in surrounding countries, too. Covering nearly 1500 species, it weighs in at over 3 1/2 lbs. The bulk of the book is not the fault of the authors but of the fabulous diversity of bird life in Ecuador. The book follows the plan of most older guidebooks with the color plates in one section and the black and white text and maps in another. This was required by the economics of printing in the past, but is really not necessary now (see Sibley, etc). The birding guides we met in Ecuador all carry the plates of the book, dissected out and carefully rebound to create a smaller portable volume -- the publisher should offer the same convenience and sell this book in two parts. Bird descriptions are detailed and careful, similar species and how to differentiate them are described. The guide book follows a tradition that I have always found unhelpful -- that of trying to describe a birds voice in words e.g. "pt-weet", "ti-lee-lee" etc. The Ecuadorian birding experts we met all were able to point out some innaccuracies in the book, mostly in the range maps, and occasionally in coloration, but overall the book is a great achievement.

(The copy we received from Amazon, and took with us, had 4 pages missing right in the middle of the almost-impossible flycatchers, but they replaced the faulty copy on our return without any quibble, and we now have a pristine copy ready for our next trip.)

              Book Description

Made famous by Charles Darwin's work on evolution and speciation, the Galápagos Islands contain an extraordinary wildlife that attracts thousands of visitors today. Those tourists who wish to concentrate on the birdlife now have A Guide to the Birds of the The Galápagos Islands, which offers unprecedented comprehensive coverage. This field guide presents every species to have been recorded within the archipelago, including accidentals and vagrants. Twenty-eight color plates illustrate the species, while four color plates show the key island habitats, with typical bird species for each also depicted. Beautiful line drawings, often showing interesting aspects of bird behavior, complement a concise, accessible, and informative text.

The book describes the morphological aspects that make it possible to identify the birds in the field, and also explains the natural history of the species that are resident to the Islands. An introduction offers information on the weather, topography, and evolution of the Islands and their birdlife. With this guide, all visitors, experts and beginners, will be able to identify and appreciate any species within the unique avifauna of the the Galápagos Islands.

5 out of 5 stars THE guide book to birds in the Galápagos.......2002-12-30

If you want to "do" the birds in depth, this is THE book for learning about the incredible endemics that gave rise to Charles Darwin's theories about evolution, as well as the resident and migrant birds for the "Islas Encantadas". (If what you need is a portable, topical and fairly complete field guide to all the critters here, get "An Identification Guide to the Birds, Mammals, and Reptiles of the Galpagos Islands" by Andy Swash et al, ISBN: 0300088647, here on Amazon instead.)

Unlike another reviewer, I DO recommend going to the Galápagos, but I also suggest doing research (Barry Boyce's guide, and others) to choose a "green" small boat trip of a week or ten days, one that assures minimum impact.

Politically, these unique and valuable islands are in peril right now from what has heretofore been an uncaring and corrupt government that has allowed illegal migration of people and their cirtters (one result was the 2002 oil spill off San Cristobal), untrammeled shark finning, sea cucumber gathering and commercial fishing within the boundaries of a most unique and valuable World Heritage Site and presumably legally-protected Ecuadorian National Park. Ecotourism has provided the money, concern and motivation to keep these islands preserved for research and future generations- for now. GO on this trip of a lifetime, but please tread lightly, observe and learn, support the "Islas Encantadas" from being fished out and plundered.

5 out of 5 stars Evolution at its Best!.......2000-10-11

This guide chronicles all you ever needed to know about the birds of the Galapagos! As a biologist, I am interested in many kinds of books about different species of animals, and this is among the best I have seen about the Galapagos. Hopefully more people who are eco-conscious will decide to buy guides like this one, instead of actually visiting the islands directly, we're leaving too many footprints on a valuable resource. Whether you are dreaming of a trip to the islands, or just plain curious, this book will help you become well aquainted with the birds of the Galapagos.
