A Lack of Will.......2007-03-04

Excellent study of the course of civil war and its resolution. Includes detailed critiques of the States Rights, Frontal Assault, and other theories of why the south lost. The books answer: insufficient willpower.

Popular imagination shows the south losing to overwhelming force- Sherman's march devastating Georgia, lack of manpower and industrial resources etc. Through a campaign by campaign review the authors show the south never lost a battle for want of equipment or men. Given the vast territory of the confederacy the South could have resisted occupation indefinitely, consider the Russians against Napoleon or the colonies against the British in the revolutionary war. So the question is, how did the North subdue the south?

In order to resist the North the South had to embrace a strategy of guerilla warfare and it refused to do so. It refused because
1) Violated the romantic notions of chivalry
2) Lack of support for the confederacy in general- desertion rates in winter of 64 around 40%.
3) Continued resistance required freeing the slaves (see below).
4) This is unstated, but I imagine the upper classes had more to lose then gain by the continuation of struggle. They had more physical assets and wealth, normally a position of power. During armed conflict people with guns have power; people with assets tend to lose them. I wonder how much of that occurred in the south during the revolutionary struggle.

The South could not afford slavery. Slaves required guards and overseers, taking manpower from the army. Slaves also acted as a fifth column providing vital support to Union Armies living off the land. By 1865 Jefferson Davis was prepared to offer emancipation to slaves willing to fight, but any emancipation undermined the racial doctrines that justified slavery. If slaves who fought deserved freedom what was the excuse for holding the rest?

The Confederacy had to end slavery to survive, but the Confederacy's principal reason for existing was to defend slavery. Once slavery became untenable most southerners decided they had more to gain by rejoining the Union then by resisting.

I recommend this to anyone interested in the historiography of the Civil War.

Why the South Lost the Civil War.......2006-11-27

The South lost the Civil War because they lost Stonewall Jackson. General Lee had an extraordinary relationship with Jackson that could not be replicated to any other of his generals. Jackson was an extraordinarily bold, brave and brilliant tactician. At Chancellorsville when Lee lost Jackson, his health failing, he died 5 years after the end of the war of heart failure, he realized that Chancellorsville was the peak of the South's chance to win. In spite of the loss of Jackson, he strode into Pennsylvania only to be beaten back because his remaining generals lacked the boldness and brilliance of Jackson. If Jackson had lived it would have been different during the Gettysburg campaign and Washington may have been taken this time. However he was dead and because of the North's extraordinary resources and General Grant, who was willing to lose massive numbers of men at each battle, the rest of the war was just a waiting game for the final event at Appomattox. Was it just that simple? Scholars would not be able to write lengthy books if it were so, so they will argue that it was not.

Review of Academic Research on Civil War, 1861-1865.......2006-03-22

Four professors authored an excellent comprehensive analysis of the Civil War, "Why the South Lost the Civil War" (1986), still pertinent today. Over generations, many military, political, diplomatic, and social factors have been evaluated for impact on Civil War developments. I regard their synthesis of historical writings and their researches have been very commendable, concluding logically that the South lacked the will to win in the Civil War.

That the South lacked the will to win is "quite a firm consensus" by scholars although not accepted by the dean of academic historians, Gary Gallagher, recorded in his "Lee and His Generals in War and Memory" (1998), page 20, footnote 28.

"Why the South Lost the Civil War" related analyses of academic historians on the collapse of the Confederacy: major military battles, noting if generals followed, ignored, or were oblivious to the military theories of Karl von Clausewitz and Baron Antoine Henri Jomini, in particular; a modest naval blockade and combined army-navy operations; the industrialization of the South; the diplomacy of the South; the frequent states-rights disputes ameliorating key political issues in the Confederacy; the inability of combatants to crush an army in battle; Grant seeking to break the military stalemate in the eastern theater; the roles of religion, Southern nationalism, and political will; and the policy to arm the slaves in early 1865. "So the Confederacy succumbed to internal rather than external causes." (Page 439) "Why the South Lost the Civil War" is comprehensive of, and very relevant to, an understanding of the Civil War.

Excellent Explanation of the South's Reasons for Loss.......2005-04-25

The research clearly showed why the South lost. The underlying thesis was that the Confederacy lacked the cooperation and sense of nationalism in order to effectively endure the war. This was due to strife within the government, unionism on part of the populace, and finally dissent on what the Confederacy was actually fighting for.
The only problem I found was the seemingly overeagerness to paint the Southern populace as feeling guilty towards slavery. The majority, 95+%, did not own slaves and therefore had no reason to feel guilty. Also, the question of religion undermining the cause seems a bit redundant.
Other than that, I highly recommend this book for any student of the Civil War.

An Enduring Classic.......2004-07-16

_Why the South Lost the Civil War_ was hailed as a classic at its first appearance in 1986, and it continues to remain a useful survey of the Civil War and an exploration of the reasons for the Confederacy's defeat. I have regularly assigned it to my undergraduate and graduate students at both the University of Central Arkansas (where I taught until 1999) and Temple University, and most have never failed to get a lot out of it (including those who are professional military officers).

In many ways, the book is a reflection of America's experience in the Vietnam War, where the side with the larger armies, greater wealth, and technological advantages failed to win. To say that the Confederacy lost the Civil War simply because it was outnumbered and outgunned is only half the story. Why did Confederates choose to quit when their forebears in the American Revolution persevered against even more formidable odds? While some may question this book's insufficient nationalism thesis, it is delineated with such grace and authority that the effort demands respect.

The book begins by providing a comprehensive overview of previously offered theories explaining the fall of the Confederacy. That historiographical survey alone makes this book worth the price of admission and makes it an invaluable tool for the serious Civil War student.

As some of the other reviews here attest, this is not a book for those who prefer their Civil War history as vapid entertainment. If you are just interested in killing, there are plenty of good battle and campaign histories to read. But if you are the kind who wonders why nations rise and fall and how wars are won and lost, you will find this a rewarding and thought-provoking experience.

This guide is very useful. Descriptions are detailed and interesting, often with histories of the birds' settlement on the islands. Some of the plates with birds more often found on the North American continent or birds not easily mistakenly identified are in black and white, but most of the plates are in color. A helpful feature is that both English and Spanish common names for the birds are listed even though the book is in English.

Great Guide to the birds of Puerto Rico.......2007-07-20

I have owned this book for a number of years and have been going to P.R. for over 15 years and this is by far the best book on the birds of the island. It has great maps and ideas for places to go bird watching on the island. The only setback is that i wish it had more color slides of the birds. But it does not make this a bad choice. I love my book and it is getting worn out and I will need a new one soon. Good Luck birding on a wonderful island.

Highly Informative.......2005-08-20

I carried this very handy book around Puerto Rico and Culebra. It was particularly helpful to know the specific areas where various birds are usually found, as well as local names. Very good illustrations.

An Invaluable Birding Guide in Puerto Rico.......2000-08-21

An extremely well-written and well-illustrated book with especially helpful and detailed text on habitat, behavior, and locales. On a recent trip to Puerto Rico for birding, we found this book to be extraordinarily helpful. Since we have come home to the Continental USA, it continues to be rich reading.

The best field guide available of the birds on Puerto Rico........1999-01-07

As a professional Puerto Rican biologist and bird watcher I found this book to be the best field guide of birds occuring at Puerto Rico. It covers as well, introduced, migratory, and endemic or native species with a full description of each bird characteristics and accompanying color plates that match the birds color patterns up to the last feather. It is a must have to any bird enthusiast living or visiting the Island, as well as for students or professional biologists.
