The Burma Bridge Busters
Manufacturer: BookSurge Publishing ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback Similar Items: ASIN: 1419615556 Release Date: 2005-11-15 |
Book Description
The men of the 490th Bombardment Squadron, the 'Skull & Wings', were thrust by chance into conflict in an obscure area of World War II, the China-Burma-India theater, sometimes referred to as 'the forgotten theater.' The 490th's primary mission was to keep the Chinese in the war, thereby tying down nearly one million Japanese troops, keeping them from being used elsewhere. The results of their highly successful 'Glip' bombing of bridges led to their being christened "Bridge Busters" by General Howard C. Davidson, Commander of the 10th Army Air Force. Often operating alone, the men of the 490th developed a "brotherhood" attitude which exists to this day. Follow them through their WWII experiences in the forgotten China-Burma-India Theater.

Unlike Any Land You Know: The Story of the 'Burma Bridge Busters!' - The 490th Bomb Squadron in China-Burma-India
James Vesely Manufacturer: Writers Club Press ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback Similar Items: ASIN: 0595096999 |
Book Description
Along with General Claire Chennault's "Flying Tigers," the men and planes of the 490th Bomb Squadron became famous as the "Burma Bridge Busters." From late 1942 to the end of the war, their incredible feats of low-level bombing and strafing of Japanese-held bridges, airfields, and troop facilities in occupied Burma hindered the Japanese advance in Asia, and provided critical air support for the allies fighting on the ground. The author's uncle, a radioman/waist gunner in the 490th, was killed on a mission in the waning days of the war. This book is both a search for his memory, and a tribute to the squadron in which he proudly served and sacrificed his life—the "Burma Bridge Busters."Customer Reviews:

The World the Cold War Made: Order, Chaos and the Return of History
James E. Cronin Manufacturer: Routledge ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback Similar Items:
ASIN: 0415908213 |
Book Description
The World the Cold War Made examines the Cold War and its lasting legacy by carefully exploring the creation and structure of the postwar settlement; its successes, failures and adaptations; and the eventual coming apart of the post war order in the 1980s and early 1990s.
James Cronin shows how this legacy has allowed some nations and industries to grow but has blocked others' paths to economic development. States whose very identities are threatened and whose positions within the larger community are in flux struggle to find a path to prosperity, while a competitive logic sharply limits the options available to them. At the same time, Cronin states, the end of the Cold War has removed powerful external constraints on the political choices of nations, allowing previously disenfranchised peoples the freedom to chart distinctive paths into the next century that are more responsive to their own histories.

From Cold War to Chaos?: Reviving Humane Development - or Remaking Market Man
James Dilloway Manufacturer: Praeger Publishers ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 0275964744 |
Book Description
Ranging widely through time, space, and subject-matter, and moving from earth and life history to economics and new vistas in brain science, Dilloway marshals analysis, ideas, and proposals to lay bare a climactic crisis that, since 1990 in particular, has been systematically concealed from view by the fresh force of a current conventional wisdom. Successive chapters review our global situation in its major demographic, environmental, economic, and human rights aspects. Our entire time perspective is then examined to throw new light on powerful human capacities and the way they are now being contradicted by assumptions--seemingly rational two centuries ago--that have become outmoded, yet still decisive, in the century now ending. Dilloway next looks at recent economic history to see how this now-obsolete philosophy has come to prevail and how massively it opposes the cooperative social basis of our entire human potential. After reviewing a many-sided United Nations push based on environmental conservation, development, and human rights, Dilloway arrives at feasible, yet far-reaching proposals for stronger international government and matching basic reforms at the level of the advanced nation-state.
