Book Description
John Hersey (1914–93) was a correspondent for Time and Life magazines when in 1942 he was sent to cover Guadalcanal, the largest of the Solomon Islands in the Western Pacific. While there, Hersey observed a small battle upon which Into the Valley is based. While the battle itself was not of great significance, Hersey gives insightful details concerning the jungle environment, recounts conversations among the men before, during, and after battle, and describes how the wounded were evacuated as well as other works of daily heroism.
Customer Reviews:
War is Hell.......2007-09-25
That's the bottom-line message of this short, artfully written book by a distinguished writer who served as a war correspondent in the Pacific early in his career.
America had no choice but to fight World War II, and the Marines profiled in this book had to be where they were. But Hersey shows you the war from close up, not from the lofty vantage point of the generals, with their maps, strategic theories and neatly prepared statistical tables.
These are real people being blown to bits. Human lives and humanity itself are expendable in the quest for a few yards of territory.
You will come away from this book hating war, however necessary it may be under certain circumstances.
The same author capped off his message some years later with his classic account of the Hiroshima bombing and its aftermath. If you haven't read that one, your education isn't complete.
Great for what it is.......2007-04-06
I was pretty surprised by how short this book was -- not counting illustrations, there are maybe 45-50 pages of content here. That said, it gives a really good perspective on being in battle and how the every-day must have been. It feels a little "cleaned up" and therefore slightly propagandistic (e.g., no one swears, no one is lazy, everyone is helpful to the writer, etc.), but for me at least, that's also helpful in understanding the time and place. The other issue is that you never for a moment forget that this is being written by a journalist (and not by an infantryman) -- the book never pretends to be anything else, though, and the reporter's POV is still useful and in some ways perhaps better for its "objective" third-partyness.
All-in-all, worthwhile for anyone interested in the subject matter.

Told As It Was.......2003-09-01
Please do not be put off by fours stars: this is a superb book about early WWII written by someone who 'was there'. The lack of a fifth star merely reflects my desire to have seen a longer, even more in-depth, book. I was born in 1950, so my knowledge of those days is gained mostly by people like John Hersey. Also, my uncle (and namesake) was a member of Edson's Raiders--and he was there, too. I have had the great good fortune to have met many of the Raiders and others on Guadalcanal and I find "Into the Valley" to be most accurate of the descriptions told to me by these veterans. All human, the Marines had to draw on their training and leadership to get themselves through the bitter fighting and to prevail against unsettling odds on Guadalcanal. Hersey allows us to see the Marines as human--young boys and men, for the most part. He paints success and he paints failure with an honest brush. This is a "must read" for anyone interested in WWII and the South Pacific.

Book Description
In The Shock of Medievalism Kathleen Biddick explores the nineteenth-century foundations of medieval studies as an academic discipline as well as certain unexamined contemporary consequences of these origins. By pairing debates over current academic trends and issues with innovative readings of medieval texts, Biddick exposes the presuppositions of the field of medieval studies and significantly shifts the objects of its historical inquiry.
Biddick describes how the discipline of medieval studies was defined by a process of isolation and exclusion—a process that not only ignored significant political and cultural issues of the nineteenth century but also removed the period from the forces of history itself. Wanting to separate themselves from popular studies of medieval culture, and valuing their own studies as scientific, nineteenth-century academics created an exclusive discipline whose structure is consistently practiced today, despite the denials of most contemporary medieval scholars. Biddick supports her argument by discussing the unavowed melancholy that medieval Christians felt for Jews and by revealing the unintentional irony of nineteenth-century medievalists’ fabrication of sentimental objects of longing (such as the “gothic peasant”). The subsequent historical distortions of this century-old sentimentality, the relevance of worker dislocation during the industrial revolution, and other topics lead to a conclusion in which Biddick considers the impact of an array of factors on current medieval studies.
Simultaneously displacing disciplinary stereotypes and altering an angle of historical inquiry, The Shock of Medievalism challenges accepted thinking even as it produces a new direction for medieval studies. This book will provoke scholars in this field and appeal to readers who are interested in how historicizing processes can affect the development of academic disciplines.

Learn about and identify birds using Stan Tekiela's state-by-state field guides. The full-page, color photos are incomparable and include insets of winter plumage, color morphs and more. Plus, with the easy-to-use format, you don't need to know a bird's name or classification in order to easily find it in the book. Using this field guide is a real pleasure. It's a great way for anyone to learn about the birds in your state.
Customer Reviews:
Would give it more than 5 stars if I could!.......2007-10-11
I rarely write reviews, but I LOVE this book! You can actually find the bird you want to identify! I started with Stan's "Birds of Illinois," which was great. Now I am learning the Birds of Wisconsin (some overlap, of course). And with the addition of the CD, now I can learn their calls too. Stan tells you exactly the identifying feature that helps you tell the birds apart--features that you can actually see! And the book is small enough to carry with you when traveling. Thanks, Stan!!!
Great backyard bird watchers book........2007-08-16
Very easy to find the birds your looking at even if you don't what they are. Also includes interesting tidbits about the birds.
Good idea but very poor results.......2007-07-07
I rarely pick up this book without putting it down in disgust. The arrangement by color is extremely inconvenient (males and females are often in different sections of the book). The coverege of species is very incomplete and much of the information that is presented as facts is quite questionable. A field guide to the Birds of Wisconsin would be a great asset, but save your money and wait for a more authoritative book. I've added this book to the back forty of my bookcase along with Stan's Wildflowers of Wisconsin.
Birds book.......2007-02-17
The book is very informative, since we have a lot of birds in our area where we live. We wanted to know what kind of birds they are and what they eat. We got some bird feeders and houses for them. They are such beautiful birds to see and watch what they're doing. We took some pictures and these birds are the ones that we never have seen in our lives until we moved here....
Excellent everything you need.......2006-07-20
It covers everything you need and has great pictures. If I were to ask for one change it would be please put the birds in alphabetic order.

Customer Reviews:
Trees of WI........2007-01-08
Very helpful when choosing which plants to save on a new house lot. This is a good foundation of knowledge for native trees in our area.
a simple pocket guide.......2004-05-31
Great, basic guide book for gaining a more acute sense of native trees in Wisconsin including many common, non-native species as well. 101 different trees are highlighted, 16 conifers and 85 deciduous. The book has a nice layout, ideal for quick reference use, with a good full page color photo for each tree. The trees are grouped according to their leaf type. Handy icons for these groups appear in the upper right-hand page corner and down by the page number. There is also, an icon made for visually understanding the mature tree size, comparing it to a 2-story house.
Short profile text describes the characteristics of a tree's overall shape, height and appearance, needle/leaf, bark, flower, fruit, fall foliage, origin, average lifespan, habitat and region. Common names appear first at the top of the page with botanical names and family classification right underneath in smaller print. At the bottom of the page is a paragraph of Stan's Notes which feature the "gee-wiz" facts of interest, even if the plant is known to be edible or poisonous. This basic information layout is kept consistent throughout the book for each tree. What is not consistent are comments of when in bloom or with berry. A few, though not all trees listed have small insert photos to show fruit and flowers. All trees do have a small insert photo for identifying the bark.
The book has a good introduction and a nice glossary that even gives a tree example for some terminology. Plus there is a checklist at the back. A nice sized, simple, easy reading handbook, kept comprehensible for the average, everyday nature nut. Recommendable as a first-time field guide.

Book Description
There are no state-specific books on how to appreciate birds and learn more about them. Like gardening, bird watching is a regional hobby, and the birds that frequent the backyards of Missouri differ from the birds found in Michigan. This series targets beginning and intermediate bird watchers from each Midwestern state.
The books are state-specific and highlight the birds that are found in each state. In addition to the profile, each bird entry includes a map to identity the specific range covered by the bird.
100 birds are presented via full-color photographs for accurate identification. Full-color seasonal section informs the reader of: the migrating birds that can be seen that month, the foods that attract those birds, the plants that can assist in attracting birds.
Our partner,
Bird Watcher's Digest, has sold more than 4 million copies of their booklets on bird varieties, bird habitat, feeding, and related outdoor topics.

The Last Brother: A Civil War Tale (Tale of Young Americans)
ASIN: 1585362328 |
Book Description
During the Civil War, it was not uncommon for Army units to have mascots to lift spirits and build loyalty among the soldiers. One of the most famous mascots was Old Abe, a remarkable eagle from Wisconsin. Named in honor of President Lincoln, the eagle became the mascot of the Eighth Regiment of the Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry. Old Abe was beloved by foot soldiers and officers alike. He made them laugh with his anticsstealing chickens, shaking hands, and creating warmth amidst the harsh conditions of war. Soaring over the battlefields, he rallied his comrades through numerous skirmishes and engagements. When his exploits became larger than life and extolled throughout the country, even the Confederates knew he was a force to be reckoned with and made the bird a target!

This CD set is wonderful!.......2007-05-22
I can finally pick out which birds are singing which songs. We listen to it on the road and my son reads along in the field guide. For years I have wanted to be able to identify which song belongs to which bird, but I had a lot of difficulty with this as I am not a auditory learner. Stan clearly introduces the bird and gives a solid description of the type of song and when/where you are likely to hear it. I feel almost like I've been blessed with learning a foreign language. Absolutely wonderful!

Book Description
Art lovers and bird watchers, rejoice! Owen J. Gromme’s classic Birds of Wisconsin comes to life again in a splendid new edition with completely rephotographed color plates and a new introduction by well-known ornithologist Samuel D. Robbins, Jr. This stunning revised edition features eighty-nine full-color portraits depicting the state’s rich variety of native species and seventeen new paintings showing birds in their natural habitat.
Bird watcher, ornithologist, or curious observer will find information here valuable in identifying birds accurately. When, where, and how abundantly each bird is present in Wisconsin is indicated with easy-to-read maps and datelines, updated by Robbins.
This widely praised book is published in cooperation with the Milwaukee Public Museum, where Gromme worked as curator of birds and mammals for more than forty years. Gromme, who was born in 1896 and died in 1991, began Birds of Wisconsin in 1941. The book was finally published in 1963 and has since become a must for bird lovers everywhere. Nationally recognized as a pioneer in conservation and the dean of wildlife artists, Gromme was the recipient of numerous awards and honors during his lifetime. Among his accomplishments, Gromme painted the 1945 federal duck stamp as well as the first Wisconsin duck stamp in 1978.

Detailed.......2007-09-02
Each of the 322 bird descriptions in this book contains the usual details of the bird's appearance but also details on the bird's habits as well. For example, the Greater Yellowlegs performs the roll of lookout among mixed flocks of shorebirds, calling incessantly at the first sign of danger, often hops on one leg and will pick food off of the water's surface despite a bill that appears to be made for probing. The Lesser Yellowlegs was a popular game bird in the 1800s because of their tendency to return and hover over wounded flockmates. These details not only help identify the bird but allow you to get to know it as well. The best location and months of the year to see each bird is also included. The table of contents lists a small picture of each to help more quickly identify possible matches. I tend to prefer the photographs in Stan Tekiela's "Birds of Wisconsin" over the illustrations in this book, but both include enough detail to identify the bird. Also, the detail in this book makes it about twice the size of Tekiela's book which fits in a front jeans pocket. If you don't mind the size of the book or illustrations instead of photographs, then this book is an excellent choice for Wisconsin or Minnesota bird watchers. The top 50 sites in each state are listed, and the top 10 are given a paragraph or two describing what to see and when to go.
Pretty Decent.......2006-01-16
Pretty decent book. The best part is the "Where to See" portion, where hot spots to sight certain birds os listed.
