    Book Description

Quick Access provides information that can help you maintain good health and take care of midical conditions. It includes conventional therapies (the kind you typically receive from a doctor or pharmacist) and complementary and alternative therapies (treatments based on other healing traditions, for example, herbs, homeopathy and acupuncture.).

Quick Access gives essential, accurate and practical information not theory. The information in Quick Access has been well researched, and the information it contains is succinct and easy to understand. Each topic follows a set format, so whether you're looking up a condition, an herb, or dietary supplement, you'll find the information you need right away.

Integrative Medicine Communications engaged a panel of health professionals that included pharmacists, physicians, nutritionists, chiropractors, herbalists, naturopaths and other health practitioners to review this information for accuracy and appropriateness.

Quick Access has three broad categories that allow fast answers to your questions.

Conditions learn a condition's signs and symptoms, what causes it, what to expect at your provider's office, and various treatment options including drugs, nutrition and the use of complementary and alternative therapies. We have included only those alternative therapies that are considered safe and that work well when combined with conventional care. As a result, herbs and dietary supplements receive a relatively large share of coverage.

Herbs read the best evidence to support the use of herbs in maintaining health or in treating conditions. Search for a particular herb, using this section first, or look here for more information on an herb, having seen it listed under treatment options for a particular condition.

Supplements find out substantive information on the use of dietary supplements in maintain health or in managing conditions. Vitamins, minerals, trace elements, and micro-nutrients are included.

In addition, the Quick Access Reference Guide allows you to review at a glance the herbs or supplements used in treating a particular condition. Once you have found what you are looking for in the Quick Reference Guide, refer to the appropriate topic for detail.

    Book Description

A classic, richly textured account of the decisive battle for France during World War II that "accentuates the big picture and the sweeping tide of battle"
    -New York Times Book Review

For the Allies, D-Day was only the beginning. Martin Blumenson never forgets that the Allies' spectacular dash from their Normandy beachhead to the German border in the summer of 1944 was accomplished by men of flesh and blood-and led by officers with human doubts, limitations, and determination. He shows us how war is conducted, makes us share the pressures and responsibilities of the commanders, and unforgettably opens us to the hopes and fears of the men who constantly faced the imminence of death. Here are the familiar figures, but revealed in new perspective-Eisenhower, Montgomery, Bradley, Patton, Rommel. This is a masterly and dramatic military narrative in the great tradition-and a moving human record of a turning point in history.

    4 out of 5 stars Terrific Book.......2006-02-04

This is an excellent account of the War in France, accounting for virtually all aspects of that battle in World War II. It is a perfect level of detail, neither too much nor too little. The only drawback is that it is woefully short of maps. I purchased a copy of the Michelin World War II map to use while I read the book and this made it easily comprehensible. You also could use the West Point World War II maps volume. Either way, get the book and a map and prepare to enjoy yourself.

4 out of 5 stars Good operational account.......2004-06-17

Blumenson's book is still the standard operational account of the Allied breakout from Normandy and the pursuit across France. This important book is now again available, and I highly recommend that it be in everyone's libraray. For those serious about military history, the official Breakout and Pursuit (also by Blumenson) will provide more detail (and documentation), but for those looking for a solid operational history in a readable form, this is the book to get.

Blumenson chooses to focus primarily on army and corps commanders, with an extention to divisional command as needed. This is a nice focus, as it provides a look at the much of the "big picture" without losing sight of the actual combat taking place. With this focus, Blumenson also provides a good look at communications, logistics, planning, as well as inter-Allied politics. The portion on the liberation of Paris is particularly interesting, more due to the political concerns than anything (even to the point of American commanders having to tolerate insubordination from Leclerc's Free French Armored Division).

The only problem with the book (hence 4 stars) is that the British/Commonwealth/Canadian contributions are very much sidelined. This should not be surprising, as the book is an outgrowth of Blumenson's contribution to the official U.S. history, but writing as a private citizen, he should have broadened his view, especially given the title of the book which does not hint at such a narrow focus.

4 out of 5 stars The Duel for Fance, 1944.......2002-02-16

The Duel for France, 1944-The Men and Battles that Changed the Fate of Europe by Martin Blumenson, 2000, 432 pages (soft cover)
This easily read book never lets the reader forget that flesh and blood-soldiers, led by officers with human doubts, limitations, and determination conducted the Allies' breakout and pursuit from their initial Normandy lodgment to the German border during the summer of 1944. Martin Blumenson shows us the conduct of war. He shares command pressures and responsibilities, as well as the combat soldier's hopes and fears. The more familiar characters-Eisenhower, Bradley, Patton, Montgomery and their German counterparts are there. However, unlike most popular writings, opposing corps commanders also come sharply into focus. These particular individuals have been generally overlooked in popular writings {official as well as unofficial), in favor of regimental, divisional, army, and army group commanders. Blumenson succeeds admirably in correcting this imbalance. This is a masterly and dramatic military narrative in the great tradition-and a moving human record of a turning point in history. Its recent publication in paperback (2000) shows its enduring value.
This book was originally published less than a year after the author published the official World War II Army history of this same period of time-Breakout and Pursuit (1962). That official history represents the definitive account Operation Cobra and the Allied pursuit across France. The Duel for France, is similar in scope to the official volume but different in treatment. This is not simply a short version of Breakout and Pursuit. Rather, the author created a new book, no more definitive but more readable. He raised the level of treatment and provided a much more personalized account of the higher-level Allied and German commanders in action. In my opinion, this was because as a private author-instead of a government employee-Blumenson was able to avoid the desiccation process associated with the staffing and approval of official histories. I recommend this book to all those interested in the study of the military profession.

      Book Description

Recorded history is a finely-woven magic fabric of intricate lies about events predating the sixteenth century. There is not a single piece of evidence that can be reliably and independently traced back earlier than the eleventh century. This book details events that are substantiated by hard facts and logic, and validated by new astronomical research and statistical analysis of ancient sources.

Yes, we can all agree that mainstream history is nearly 100% BS due to politics, economics, ego, problems with dating techniques, and various conspiracies. Agreed. But, I've been researching the distinct possibility that human history (in terms of civilizations) are much more ancient than we've been told, so coming across this book was very interesting to me. I wondered how Fomenko could be wrong (if at all) because he is very persuasive in his presentations. Then it dawned on me. If at previous times in prehistory, due to the various catastrophies that are well documented (comets, asteroids, planetary disruptions, plasma discharge, pole reversals, etc) the Earth was in a different position in relation to the sun, different tilt on its axis, different orbit, different rotation (in terms of velocity and DIRECTION), and the continents were in different positions, then would this not cause the ancients to see the sky (constellations) differently? In other words, is Fomenko making erronious assumptions about the physics of the Earth in pre-history, which then corrupt his data with regards to dating the relevant astrology? The last event to seriously disrupt our planet occured roughly 3500 years ago, according to other good researchers, so is it possible Fomenko has been confused by this? The vastly different physics of our planet in the not so distant past may explain this confusion, which is not to say the "mainstream" version of history is correct; on the contrary. I am not an expert in these fields, but wanted to see if this idea could spark discussion.

5 out of 5 stars Pants on fire?.......2007-07-19

Will people ever read before spamming? Yes, Jesuits could not rewrite world history alone, they had help. Anyway, Dr Prof Acad A.Fomenko does not point to jesuits as the driving force of world wide history manipulation in published volumes 1,2,3;, actually he barely mentions the poor devils. Check it with 'Search inside' feature, please. China is rarely mentioned either, in fact, Dr Fomenko is completely eurocentric. Right, his theory contradicts all mainstream schools of history, because in their actual state they are all built on blatantly erroneus chronology. You don't need a mysterious cabal (conspiracy) to falsify history, the falsification is its modus operandi. It is inherent to history(ians) to falsify (distort) events, as it is inherent to humans to boast as it is inherent to power (authority) to legimize itself by referrring to glorious past made to its own order. Dr Prof Fomenko and team have identified scores of instances of such manipulation in Russian, European, etc.. history, and delivered valid statistical proof thereof. His own 'reconstruction' is completely another story. Forget c14 as a valid method of dating. W.Libby has initially discovered a brilliant method of INDEPENDENT dating. Too bad, c14 method has become a joke after a forced marrige with dendrochronology with consensual chronological scale inbuilt. Radiocarbon method can't stand blind tests, but is so very productive as a rubberstamp.

5 out of 5 stars Accepted History & Chronology Must Be Changed. .......2007-04-09

There is no doubt that history as most know it is a sham, & institution's version of History both University & Church is fradulent & inaccurate. Everything was established with an agenda, The real "Dark Ages" are now when we have access to incredible amounts of information past authorities & more important 'common folk' didn't have but our institutions & educators are slow to evolve because of what has ignorantly & arrogantly been taught for too long. This is on many subjects not just Chronology.

For anyone to question "Why would a Mathematician have anything credible to say of History?" The answer is from Dr. Fomenko's preface in the book: "It would be worthwhile to remind the reader that in the XVI-XVII century Chronology was considered to be a subdivision of Mathematics." These volumes could possibly be some of the most important works to date & should be read by everyone with an interest in History, especially professors & educators who have a duty to the public. I have read both books & must say that 'Chronology 1' has some very eye opening & revolutionary information. Even if these volumes are part true the implications are profound & opens the doors to further investigations & questions which must be done. I speak several different lanquages & must say the logic Dr. Fomenko uses with "inflection" of words & words being read from left to right in one region & right to left in another then written backwards, the removal of vowels & get down to basics of words, or different cities & locations having the same name etc. is correct. Vowel usage has always been optional & varied, actually complicating linquistics & study. The first thing one has to understand is that words never had a fixed spelling in history like we do now, the spelling of words was mutable & regional, as well as names & titles of people were vast, varied & changed, NOTHING WAS FIXED or understood linear. Matters of Life & Death as well as financial profiteering yesterday & today were & are made with ignorant, illogical & conspiratorial views of history & reality, it's time people get closer to the Truth & society collectively grow up.

      5 out of 5 stars Very Interesting.......2007-03-07

It is a good proposal and I believe it will mature into something even better in the future. I think it deserves to be read.

4 out of 5 stars History as Science Fiction.......2007-01-10

Anatoly Fomenko has written a very intriguing book, full of pictures, charts, and computer 'proof' of his thesis: backwards of AD900 we don't really know what happened or when. Between AD900 and AD1600 there is more certainty, but there is still a lot of fuzzy ground, and things don't get reliable until we get past the 1600's where the printing press made it very difficult for the perpetrators of this timeline manipulation to change anything that had been committed to print. The Dark Ages did not happen. Books were burned for a reason. One organization has doubled the actual length of its existence by expanding the real chronology. Read why.

I had always wondered why Christ died about AD33 and yet men waited until the 11th century to form the Knights Templar, the Cathars, etc and go after the Holy Land by force. Why the 1000 year gap? Turns out there wasn't more than a 10-12 year gap and he proves it using astronomy. This also implies that the planet is not as old as we have been told, and current Christian and other creationist scientists are already championing that idea without being aware of Fomenko's book. The two groups, creationist scientists and the Russian mathematical analysts corroborate each other. Fascinating.

Of course, all this flies in the face of what we have been told traditionally is the 'proper' chronology of western civilization, and most readers will experience 'cognitive dissonance' in reading this book. It means that our history going backwards from AD1600 becomes progressively more incorrect and unreliable until it cannot be trusted at all... in the space of 700-800 years.

Naturally, the curious, open-minded reader will want to know WHO did this, WHY, and did any of the events we think of as really ancient ever happen?
Dr. Fomenko is a respected scientist/mathematician at Moscow State University who has already answered these questions to the satisfaction of his initially skeptical colleagues. Most of them are now believers, a few still refuse to believe (the usual diehards), and of course the western press has ignored Fomenko's work -- for obvious reasons when you read the book. The ones who perpetrated this chronology ruse have a lot to answer for. They are still with us. That's why this book is a well-kept secret.

I gave the book a 4-star rating because I was unable to check out some of his claims; those I checked were as he said. But if even 1/3 of his claims are true, this punches a big hole in what we think is our history, the meaning of western civilization, our educational process (for repeating the ruse as gospel), and the trustworthiness of the organization that perpetrated this ruse, well-intentioned or not.

This book relates to current research into a Young Earth paradigm, to John Keel's discoveries about our planet, and Fr Malachi Martin's insights (in his now out-of-print books). We are indeed sheep who are manipulated and kept ignorant -- for a reason. While knowing what these men have to say may be the "booby prize" (as in: 'what can you do with this knowledge?'), it will provide interesting reading. Didn't someone say: "...and the Truth will set you free."?? For you to judge if this book contains the truth.

John Peters' raw and candid personal account of the 1990-91 Gulf War paints a very different picture from the sanitized version most Americans are accustomed to. Drawing on his real life wartime experiences and personal photographs, John Peters guides the reader through the day-to-day life of a grunt infantryman. Whether it's racing across the desert in a Bradley Fighting Vehicle during the ground war, clearing enemy bunkers, capturing and patching-up Iraqi prisoners, dealing with long stretches of monotony and boredom or going months without bathing, his unique blend of humor and sarcasm entertains and gives the reader a glimpse of Army life in wartime.

Infidels In The Holy Land: A Mechanized Infantryman's Personal Account Of The 1990-1991 Gulf War is the vividly candid account of SFC John Peters service on the front lines of the Gulf War. His story draws upon his real life wartime experiences enhanced with personal photographs as he guides the reader through the day-to-day life of a grunt infantryman. From racing across the desert in a Bradley Fighting Vehicle during the brutally lethal ground war, to clearing enemy bunkers, to capturing and patching-up Iraqi prisoners of war, to dealing with long stretches of monotony and boredom, to going months without bathing, Peters takes the reader into the gritty realism of the war from beginning to end with a blend of GI humor and sarcasm. Infidels In The Holy Land is a superbly written battlefield memoir of the highest caliber and a very welcome addition to the military history of the Gulf War.

5 out of 5 stars A very unique perspective on the war. I Couldn't Put It Down!.......2005-10-13

Mr. Peters' unique perspective on the war is a refreshing break from the "polished" views of other senior Gulf War vets like General H. Norman Schwarzkopf and others. His mix of descriptive details, combined with his numerous personal photographs, allows the reader to feel as though they are right there in the thick of it. I highly recommend this book and give it two thumbs up!

Roger Tory Peterson, one of America's pre-eminent artist-naturalists and arguably the inventor of the field guide, made people love birds like no one since John James Audubon. A Field Guide to the Birds, first published in 1934, remains his most famous and wonderful work. The manual stood instantly apart from the dichotomous keys zoologists used to identify species, since Peterson grouped paintings of related species together and used arrows to, as he explained, "pinpoint the key field marks." This way, watchers could spot birds from a distance and avoid, as he archly put it, "the bird-in-hand characters that the early collectors relied on." Birders could use the guide where they needed it most--outdoors--on living birds flitting quickly by. In addition to detailed illustrations, Peterson offers charming (and useful) descriptions of each avian citizen's appearance, behavior, voice, and range. There is also priceless anecdotal information, based on decades of field experience, as in this description of the common house sparrow (Passer domesticus): "Familiar to everyone. Sooty city birds often bear little resemblance to clean country males with the black throat, white cheeks, chestnut nape." His transliterations of song are just as quietly marvelous. For instance, Pluvialis squatarola, or the black-bellied plover, makes things clear with "a plaintive slurred whistle, tlee-oo-eee or whee-er-ee (middle note lower)."

Peterson's original handbook covered birds of Eastern North America, and has since been followed by guides to Western birds, animal tracks, butterflies, and many other natural wonders. He and his team updated "The Birders' Bible" as new species were discovered and classifications modified. Generations of enthusiastic watchers owe Peterson a debt of gratitude for making ornithology accessible. But equally important, he showed scientists that finding beauty in living animals, and not just cataloging the measurements of dead ones, was crucial. Roger Tory Peterson died in 1996. He will be remembered as a passionate naturalist, a keen observer of living things, and a gifted artist and teacher. --Therese Littleton

      Book Description

Explore the Expanding Peterson Line. Leave your reading glasses behind. Now Roger Tory Peterson's classic Field Guide to Eastern Birds has been reissued in a larger format specially produced for those who don't want to take their reading glasses into the field. Peterson's treasured illustrations have been reproduced in beautiful color. Species descriptions include only the most important identification elements -- size, voice, and habitat -- in large, easy-to-read type. Color range maps, conveniently located next to the species accounts, have been updated specifically for this book. Roger Tory Peterson's original text has been revised and updated by Virginia Peterson, who worked closely with her husband and created the maps for the fourth edition of the Field Guide to Eastern Birds; Noble Proctor, a professor of biology who was a close friend of Roger Tory Peterson's and led natural history tours for twenty-five years; and Pete Dunne, vice president of the New Jersey Audubon Society and director of the Cape May Bird Observatory, as well as the author of many books on birding. The maps have been updated by Virginia Peterson and Paul Lehman, past editor of Birding magazine and a bird tour leader who has traveled extensively around North America studying bird distribution and identification and has written many articles on these subjects.

5 out of 5 stars Peterson Field Guides: Eastern Bird, Large Format Edition.......2007-07-27

This easy on the eyes large format edition is a great book for all ages and levels of bird watching. The soft cover makes it light to handle or take with you in the field. The large format makes identifying birds much easier and quicker. Well layed out and practical.

3 out of 5 stars Peterson Field Guides.......2007-03-16

It took almost 3 weeks to get this item. Very disappointed in comparison to other items I've ordered through Amazon.

4 out of 5 stars Not your father's Peterson Guide.......2007-01-13

I mistakenly thought that the large print version would be the same as my trusted old Peterson Guide, just in large print. Nope! The format is entirely different and greatly abbreviated. It's misleading to title this text the same as the original. This may be a nice guide for a novice bird watcher for bird feeder identification. I gave my copy away to a shut-in with minimal bird identifying experience.

      1 out of 5 stars Misrepresentation .......2006-06-25

This book was bundled with another bird book, and the offer appeared directly under the Peterson Field Guide book, which I thought I was ordering. It was not very obvious in the small thumbnail image and description that it was a child's coloring book. I did not get what I wanted and have since returned it.

4 out of 5 stars Perfect book for the older birder.......2006-01-30

I purchased this book for my mother, who is in her 70s. She recently started birding so this was her first field guide-easy to read, large pictures make identification very easy for the beginning birder of any age.
