Bladder Problems? Start Here.......2006-04-06
Written by Dawn R.Mahowald only
I remember when I first discovered I had Interstitial Cystitis, a chronic inflammatory bladder condition, also called IC. I was looking for help and this was the first book I had located with an easy-to-read, but authoritative synopsis of IC. Later, as I began working with people with bladder disorders, like bladder cancer and prostate difficulties I found I was recommending the book to more and more of my clients as a really good, solid source of basic information on their condition.
People can relate to the patient stories. The descriptions of each disorder are clear and simple to comprehend. Readers understand the explanations of the various tests and possible treatments. And, people liked getting a quick overview of the drugs they been prescribed. For some, information they get from this book satisfies their needs. For others, it sets the groundwork and provides them with what they need to move to the next level of knowledge on their condition.
A good "first book" for anyone with incontinence, cystitis, prostate disorders, and bladder cancer or for anyone who just wants to know about them.
Excellent resource for anyone with bladder problems!.......1999-05-18
This book is well worth purchasing. The information on interstitial cystitis is current, backed by research, and encouraging. I would have to rate it as "outstanding."

The Essex-class aircraft carriers are famous for their effectiveness and reliability as warships and the mammoth construction programs they initiated. Built in 1941, the Intrepid (CV11) was one of the class of twenty-four vessels constructed during and immediately after World War II. Carrying ninety aircraft each, they formed the main air strength and striking power of the U.S. Pacific Fleet against the Japanese from 1943 to 1945. Written by well-known warship historian John Roberts, this classic reference on this classic ship features the extensive diagrams and photographs that this series has become justly famous for. It also offers an authoritative description of the concepts, design, modifications, and operational history of the Intrepid and a new large-scale fold-out plan. 154 illustrations.101/2 x 91/2 inches.

The Aircraft Carrier Intrepid.......2004-05-04
I recently obtained the USNI Press's reissue of noted naval historian John Roberts' Anatomy Of The Ship series on the USS Intrepid, the Essex-class carrier now serving as a museum in NYC Harbor. The book, originally published about 22 years ago, holds up remarkably well. It has tight but useful text, great photos, and - of course - the kinds of drawing-after-drawing-after-drawing of the ship, it's details and fittings, etc., that you've come to expect from the AOTS series.
This AOTS book includes a complete description of this early (CV-11) Essex-class fleet carrier, an up-scale/modernized version of the earlier Yorktown class carriers (which also included Hornet and Enterprise). The photo section focuses on Intrepid, but includes shots of other Essex carriers. Several photos show the Intrepid's deck overloaded with aircraft being transported to the Pacific Theater, which would make a great basis for a display model (if you don't mind scratch-building P-61 Black Widows, PV-2 Harpoons and other land-based aircraft seldom seen on aircraft carriers. Camoflage is important for these mid/late war carriers, and the Intrepid's dazzle scheme is well-presented (along with camouflage of the F6F Hellcat.
Of course, the heart and soul of the AOTS books are the drawings - these in 1/350th scale, ideal for use with the new 1/350th Essex class kits now out on the market. These are nothing short of superb.
The cover says "complete with 1/350th Scale fold-out plan" and I looked several times trying to find this fold-out in the reprint ... then it hit me. The inner side of the dust jacket IS the "fold-out plan" - a brilliant printing solution, and something that makes this plan even easier to use than if it had been bound into the book.
I've been fortunate to spend a lot of time on the USS Hornet (CV-12), now a museum ship in San Francisco Bay (at Alameda). Though modernized, she's still very much an Essex, and my familiarity with the class convinces me even more than might otherwise be the case that this book is a "must" for ship modelers or WW-II Naval historians.
ONE OF THE SERIES FOUNDERS.......2001-06-27
This is the second in the series, and whilst it is a great book, it lacks the detail of many of the other in this series. It only covers the WWII era of this vessel that served up to Vietnam. Very hard to find but still perfect for any enthusiast or modeller.

Questions that we all ignore.......2004-09-07
This book was written in the 1970's, so it isn't surprising that it has a quality of despair due to the energy crisis, the political effects of the Vietnam war and the social turmoil of the time. The 20 year later updates that the author has added after each chapter greatly add value to his original text, so be sure "updated for the 90's" is the subtitle of the edition you get. In contrast to another reviewer, I'd say the final chapter stands far above the specifics of the rest and would be worth reading now or at any time in the future.
The question is: can humanity survive the coming decades when pressures will come to bear that cannot be avoided? This is an extremely important question to those who live under capitalism (more of us all the time) which admits to no end to growth. The environment will increasingly resist efforts to grow the wealth of humanity as a whole as it is already challenged by the growth in the wealth of individuals (how many cars can be packed on a road when so many want bigger vehicles?) Societies of those accustomed to expecting and demanding more, knowing no limitation on freedom of action other than the need to accumulate money to buy things, will not receive limitations gladly. What would it mean to face the fact that at some point a generation must realize that, no, their children cannot live better than they do? Will one kind of social or political system be better suited to the future than others? Heilbroner's fears are that we will put current desires and comforts ahead of any concern for the future of our kind and will live life to the max until we hit a wall. He cites none other than Adam Smith writing of how self interest puts the slightest threat to one's own well-being far beyond horrors to great numbers of others on the other side of the world. At what point will those without stop tolerating a lopsided distribution of wealth? When limitations start to bite, will democracy hold up or will a "strong leader" be called forth to take control over a multitude bickering for pieces of the pie? to say that growth can continue endlessly is to ignore this and that's exactly what world leaders are doing in the 21st century.
Technology, in this book, is seen for the undoubted good that it has done. But it also steps up the level of consumption and presents new problems that did not present themselves at lower levels of technology. For example, agricultural output has increased due to artificial fertilizer, but now we have the "dead zone" in the Gulf of Mexico. A new car pollutes far less due to tech advances but there are so many more cars. In this way, technology can never be our savior because it simply changes the nature of the threats we face. Only if we were to use a tech advance to work its magic without our lurching to even greater levels and variety of consumption would it truly be a savior. Can we ever set a limit on ourselves voluntarily before we lose our freedom to choose to do so? Technology has always seemed to save us, but that's an illusion. It has only given us a series of life-preservers that we continue to overload, in the belief that yet another will be thrown to us by science. We stoutly resist a hard look at ourselves and move on to the next higher level of lifestyle.
The easy out is to label books like this as "gloom and doom" and say that the tide will rise and lift all boats. Nobody will have to do without anything at any time in the future if we just keep on growing. More people can always have more. But we all know there is no perpetual motion machine, particularly one that endlessly operates faster and over a wider field than it did before. But to question the way we live is to admit that something must change and that raises anxiety, so the question is left unaddressed, expecially if things are good...and for those in power all over the world, things are definitely good.
Heilbroner is quick to admit that he doesn't have the answers, but he courageously asks the questions we need to ask and soon. His last chapter is very moving and can't help but make a reader wonder what we are doing to the future by living heedlessly. If it is rational to value something you may have today far beyond a great multiple of that something in the distant future (as economists tell us) then will rationality save future generations of the creature that possesses it?
Heilbroner's productive life was in the 20th century, but he has left us a wake-up call, and a challenge in this book.
A "sister" to the literary work of the Unabomber's Manifesto.......1999-05-07
One can be "hooked" onto this book early on in the first few chapters. Heilbroner scores early, profoundly grabbing the reader's attention, with the topics he discusses from politics to the wars that are associated with them in the first half of the book. He is the prototype clone of a knowledgeable sociology analyst, working for your understanding, such as in the aftermath of a military general briefing you about a war the country has participated in. However, he goes on a drought as he enters the economic stages and areas in the latter, sounding more like a collage of scattered brainstorms. The first half is well-written and well-explained within the original text. The critical updating afterword makes it that much clearer and significant. Without the afterwords, this book would not receive its third star from me. The latter half is one big mess, consisting of choppy and vague statements on various issues that are lacking the lucidity that was existent in the first half of the book. It reminds me of Revelation in the New Testament. The afterword neglects its previous job to clarify and justify the direction of the chapters preceding it. Overall, this work of art by Heilbroner is a simile to that of the Manifesto. Although the tone contrasts the Unabomber's by a few degrees, the underlying elements are there: the dangers facing humanity, malignant societal issues, the biological timebomb ticking away, and the question of whether humanity will continue to survive and play the game of life, or make one last swing & strike out. If I was another visitor from another galaxy, this book is adequate with informing me about the yin & yangs of homosapiens. The light of this book, is that it neither plays games or toils with the reader. It's simply a compilation of entities, a "Comet," humanity created, heading to destroy and relocate us with the dinosaurs. I must add that this is one of those high IQ books that puts your brain's intellectual capacity on world issues to the test. You either know what he is trying to get across or you're knocked out in the first round. The vocabulary in this book is that of a higher educational echelon as well. What can make this book better is the revision of the second half: deconsolidation. However, this book never makes you want to quit on it. I do not recommend this book to high school students, but individuals of more advanced intellect and experience.

An Inquiry Into the Human Prospect (Original version).......1997-11-19
This book provides an intriquing critical analysis of the future as seen from the height of the Cold War era. Though the focus of the book does not rest primarily on the Cold War and other conflicts characteristic of the this time, it is obvious through the content of the book that much of what he discusses is more relevant to the social situations of that time, than those of today. Even as this is the fact, the book is still worth the time it takes to read it (it is relatively short, -200 pages) due to its valid insights and arguments that can be seen to have manifested in today's society. If you are interested in the societal growth and/or demise of our world, this would be an appropriate book to get your hands on.
Book Description
With 364 range maps and 96 color plates portraying 548 species, this is the classic field guide to European birds. Covering 698 species, the descriptive text includes information on geographical races, vagrants, and introduced species. Confusing species such as waders, raptors, and warblers have additional notes on how to distinguish them.
Customer Reviews:
Good book, not the best organization........1999-10-14
I found this book to be informative as a guide to what I would find in Europe, but it received a poor grade in the field due to the poor organization. I had to flip through three sections to find a picture, description, and range-map for each bird. The maps were really too small for a US native to be able to tell which country was which, and the illustrations were consistantly exagerated to the point that you could only identify the so-called important features (which often were the same as important features of other birds) were all you could be certain were accurate to some extent. Even though I don't speak German, I actually found a book in German which was more useful to me than Peterson's. The German book, entitled GU Naturfuhrer "Vogel" (Birds), had accurate photos of every bird I saw on my trip. The maps in Vogel, although lacking lines seperating the countries, were much more identifiable to an American due mainly to size. After identifying the birds by the photos, I compared the scientific names to Peterson's, and was able to identify the birds with their English names (although usually the pictures in Peterson's looked nothing like those in "Vogel"). So as a field guide, Peterson's gets no stars, but for the descriptions and scientific names, it deserves a little credit.

Book Description
This field guide helps to identify bird sounds. The guide is organized by habitat, with atmospheric backgrounds and voice-overs discussing how to tell the difference between each species, so the reader can quickly learn all the calls he can hear when visiting his local wood, or marshland RSPB reserve. Over 158 species are covered, the focus being on common birds and birds that are difficult to separate visually, but easy when the calls are heard. The accompanying booklet gives background information on each species, plus an introductory section on bird song, where and when it can be heard, and how to make your own recordings.

A disappointment.......2007-01-21
I was very much looking forward to the paperback Collins Bird Guide, but unfortunately the pages are crowded, the print tiny and cramped, and the binding does not allow the book to open completely. While the Guide may be exhaustive and accurate, it is neither satisfactory as a field guide nor enjoyable to read at home. Were the text less verbose and even conversational, perhaps a larger font could have been used. I had hoped for something analogous to Sibley, "Field Guide to Birds of Western North America", which has a clear layout and a binding that opens properly.
The best field guide to any avifauna.......2005-11-09
This book emerged onto a highly competitive market already burgeoning with numerous field guides covering the region, most by renowned authors and many having benefitted from improvement over several editions. Quite simply though, this book won instant recognition as the best field guide available for Europe - and perhaps a model for field guides everywhere. Its authors are well known experts in their field having spent many years studying and publishing on the birds of the region. However, the key to the guide's success is the fact that so much more useful information has been condensed into a guide which is much the same size as existing books. The book boasts excellent illustrations, succinct text and handy maps, all presented on a the same page. Small enough to fit into a pocket (about the same size as the National Geographic guide) and cheap, it is a must for anyone visiting Europe. As one reviewer has already pointed out, it is indispensable in Alaska too - not just for Palaearctic vagrants, but for regular shorebirds and some residents. Don't hesitate!
Standard reference for Western Europe (and lately Alaska!!).......2002-12-31
Excellent book with comprehensive coverage and high quality plates. Book production quality is also high. My edition is small enough in hardback to be a true "Field Guide" although I understand that a new larger edition has been recently published, if plate quality is maintained this edition will be an excellent reference. If you have questions about this text go to amazon.co.uk and read some of the reviews there. This book recieved the British Trust for Ornithology seal of approval so anything an amateur like me might add is probably superfluous. Excellent reference, nice plates and informative and accurate text
Very helpful during my first visit to Europe!.......2000-06-18
This book help me a lot during several bird trips on my first visit to Europe in 1999. I have travelled in several countries. Sometimes with very keen birders, other times alone. It would be impossible for me to be in the field in conditions to identify so many birds, without this valuable book. Excellent pictures. It's my new standard on international field guides.
