Book Description
Multiple sclerosis -- MS -- strikes about one in a thousand North Americans, usually in early adulthood, when they are building careers and starting families. Because the disease involves the central nervous system, its effects are wide-ranging and difficult to predict.
Multiple Sclerosis: The Facts You Need -- part of the Your Personal Health Series -- is a fact filled, comprehensive guide to living with MS, supported by diagrams, case histories, a drug table and an extensive list of helpful books and organizations. Topics include:
what MS is, and who gets it;
how MS is diagnosed as "possible," "probable" or "definite";
why the disease affects different people in different ways;
how "relapsing-remitting" MS differs from "progressive" MS;
how people with MS and their families, can adapt their homes, careers and lifestyles to cope with the disease;
which treatments work, which don't and what help is on the horizon.
Combining authoritative medical advice and practical hands-on tips,
Multiple Sclerosis: The Facts You Need is an invaluable guide for anyone affected, directly or indirectly by this complex disease.

Knowledge is Power.......2004-02-03
When I was newly diagnosed this was one of the first books I bought. It helped me to understand terms used in MS, and also knowledge that gave me a small sense of control over the disease. Knowledge is power, and this helped me gain that feeling.
Exceptionally helpful to someone in their first year.......2003-12-01
I found this book to be very comprehensive: addressing what MS is, what causes MS, symptoms of MS, diagnosis, symptom management, treatment options, and social aspects. It includes the technical description, but through the use of analogies, makes each description very tangible for the layperson. I found the section on medications (and their evolution) particularly helpful. This book reinforced much of what I've learned through doctors, websites, and support organizations and filled in the gaps where information was lacking. It's an excellent resource for someone who has been newly diagnosed with multiple sclerosis.
Multiple Sclerosis bible.......2003-10-10
This is one of the best books ever written for the patient. It explains in clear and concise language all aspects of concern. I have it close at hand and anytime I have a question, 9 times out of 10 it is in the book. A must read for a newly diagnosed person. I call it my bible of MS. In it is a brief history of the disease and right up to the most up to date treatment options. Absolutely love it.
LOVE IT!.......2002-09-13
If you only buy one book about this horrible disease, this is the one. Written by an MD in an easy-to-understand style.
terrific resource.......2001-10-03
I bought this book two days after being diagnosed - it was so helpful in understanding what was going on, how to deal with specific symptoms, what to watch out for, etc. It also explained the treatments - from the steroids to the ABC drugs. I sent sopies to my mom and dad because they were freaking out over the whole diagnosis and I didn;t have enough strength for all of us. Knowledge is power and this one gives really good, up to date info - something critical in managing this disease.

Old data.......2007-06-29
Book is very thin and has outdated information. One example is the XM-21, referring to the M-21 rifle when it was experimental. That was back in the late 60's if I remember correctly. That will give you an idea about the text of the gear and tactics used in the book.

This book is a must for retired military Veterans! Especially USMC. I was in the service for 13 years and a friend of mine gave this book to me before I retired. It is the best for snipers it teaches you to counter sniper atacks by looking in bushes and listening for muzzle blasts. It will teach you how to move so that it is harder for snipers to hit you and how to tactically get away from them.It is truly my favorite and I will take this book to the grave with me

Book Description
Generals die in bed, while soldiers die in the trenches, horrifically, unimaginably, infested with lice and surrounded by rats fattened on corpses. There are no rules, no expectations in war. And there is certainly no glamour. Instead, the men inhabit a senseless world, trusting only the instinct to stay alive.
Based on his own experiences in the First World War, Charles Yale Harrison writes a stark and poignant story from the point of view of a young man sent to fight on the Western Front. Beginning in Montreal, the scene soon shifts from the cheering crowds, streamers, and music of the farewell parade to the stench of the trenches, where the soldiers meticulously divide up the stale, gray "war" bread and rationed sugar for their weak tea.
In stark, graphic detail, Harrison writes of the soldiers' fear as the crumbling dirt walls of the palisade tumble down upon them during a shell attack. He recounts the horror of face-to-face combat, where the enemy is revealed to be a smooth-skinned lad, no different from the boy down the street. He shows compassion for both the killer and the killed, each innocent, in a situation without choice.
In raw, powerful prose, the insanity of war is shown clearly as Harrison questions the meaning of heroism, of truth, and of good and evil.
The First World War may seem distant and irrelevant to many young people today, but it is a timeless and important lesson. Seen through the eyes of the adolescent narrator, the experience of trench warfare takes on renewed vibrancy as readers identify with the plight of the youthful soldiers. Harrison's vivid account is a valuable resource for all teachers and students of history and of the human condition.
An introduction places
Generals Die In Bed in its proper literary context, beside All Quiet on the Western Front and A Farewell to Arms. Harrison's concise, blunt writing style is an effective means of conveying the reality of war and an example to students of literature. Originally published in 1930, this book was lauded as "the best of the war books" by the New York Evening Standard.

Customer Reviews:
-Mourning Doves mate for life-.......2002-03-28
This is one of those books that you pick up intending to find a quick answer to a specific question and, before you know what's happened, you've become wrapped up in reading several pages. The book is beautifully done, useful, and very pleasant to read.
The first section provides general information about feeding, housing and gardening for the birds. In the second section, we learn about courtship, baby birds, territory, and migration. The third section gives specific data on individual bird species, and finally, a small appendix provides lists of favorite foods, egg identification, and habitat requirements.
Here are a few bird facts that I thought were particularly interesting: Mourning Doves mate for life and are excellent parents. - The Kildeer is very unusual because they often make their nests on unpaved driveways which is confusing because the eggs look like small pieces of gravel. - The beautiful Indigo Bunting frequently uses the same nest by just making yearly repairs. - One very unpopular bird is the Brown-Headed Cowbird. They like to lay their eggs in the nests of other birds and leave all of the work and rearing to another mother. - The Winter Wren builds several nests which he shows to a possible mate for approval. The female then picks her favorite nest. Unwilling to let the other nests go to waste, he shows the remaining nests to a second female and ends up with two families.
If you enjoy feeding the birds, you'll love this book.
Makes Bringing Birds to YOU Easy.......2000-08-10
This book is a great guide to backyard birding. It's 320 pages long and the last 100 or so pages is an extensive identification chapter featuring full color drawings of each bird, a description of its range and a lengthy description of its eating habits, courtship, housing and habitat preferences. The Appendix is one of the most useful parts of the book - it includes charts listing each bird's egg color and size, housing each bird will accept, migration patterns and food preferences for the birds. This book ensures you will get the birds you want, when you want - it even tells which birds may interbreed and how to avoid quarreling among feisty songbirds. It includes low-budget solutions to most of the "high-cost" bird expenses, and explains in great detail the proper storage of food. This book is undoubtedly the best resource birders have for attracting yard birds. Although the females in each species could be shown in better detail - only in the cases in which the sexes are drastically different are the females shown, - it is still an excellent resource from experienced "backyard birders". If you plan on attracting, feeding and nesting birds, get this book. Your success is assured.
Backyard Bird-Lover's Guide.......2000-05-05
Fun and exciting - this book will show you the 3 essentials your yard needs to become a favorite with as wide a variety of birds that is possible for your area. I especially liked it's format, simple and easy to follow, it takes you through planning/planting, feeding stations, the best food for each bird - and you're ready to sit back and enjoy your backyard habitat! An updated replacement for my old standby book, The Backyard Bird Watcher by George Harrison.

Customer Reviews:
A bird-lovers must have!.......2004-01-21
Jan Mahnken has put together a book that will be of great help to anyone who would like to have a backyard full of birds. Whether you are new to the hobby of feeding and watching birds or are an old pro this book will be of great help. If you are a new birder this book is a must for it is well written and easy to understand. In the long run will save you a lot of money as it will help you decide on the kinds of feed you need and what will just be wasted. For the old pro, the clear division of subjects and easy to read writing style will help you add to the knowledge you already have.
The chapter on nest boxes is one of the best in the book and includes plans for building almost any type of birdhouse that you choose. There are also sections on bird behavior, nesting, and identifying different kinds of birds. The last section of the book provides little biographies of various kinds of birds you may be able to attract to your backyard. The only negative I found in this book was that the author tried to describe the ranges of the birds profiled instead of providing a map. Living in the mid-south I am relatively close to several ranges and sometimes found Ms. Mahnken's descriptions of range limits somewhat hard to follow. Finally, there is an index that will help you immensely in trying to attract certain kinds of birds and in identifying their nests.
I am extremely glad I bought this book, as it has already been a big help to me. It will hold a prominent place in my library.
