Book Description
Prepare students for today's fast-paced, high-tech, culturally diverse world. This exciting, innovative text gives high school students the skills they need to meet today's complex challenges: balancing work and family, understanding and using technology, and developing tolerance for cultural differences.
Book Description
Geoffrey Regan presents a fascinating catalog of naval incompetence throughout history, from Roman times to the Gulf War. Crammed with the intriguing and the bizarre and embellished with fifty illustrations, Brassey's Book of Naval Blunders is a serious but entertaining look at the follies and misjudgments-and sometimes the bad luck-of captains, fleet commanders, strategic planners, and ship designers.
Book Description
The bestselling author of Military Blunders and Naval Blunders brings war history buffs more faux-pas from the front lines with a fascinating study of some of the less glorious moments in the history of aerial warfare. Airforce Blunders takes readers on a grand 'tour de farce', from the early abortive attempts at manned flight in the Renaissance period, through two World Wars, the Falklands War and beyond. Tales include the Austrian unmanned bombing balloons that blew back and discharged their cargo over Austrian lines when the wind changed, and the mis-design of the British BE9, a First World War plane whose gunner risked decapitation every time he swung around to fire at the enemy!

Book Description
As any sailor knows, life at sea is hazardous under even normal circumstances. In times of war with an enemy intent on killing and sinking you it is infinitely more so.
David Blackmore has researched 100 extreme cases over the span of history and written graphic descriptions covering the background, the events and the tragic consequences.
Many were the result of enemy action, others (too many) straight human error and the remainder were caused by act of God, not least the weather.
Examples include the Syracuse Harbour disaster (BC413), the rout at Aboutir Bay (1798), and the Prince of Wales/Repulse sinking due to lack of air cover (1941). All make for fascinating and informative reading.
Customer Reviews:
A most curious collection........2007-05-03
If you like short stories, especially short stories about shipwrecks and the sea, then this might be the book for you. Containing a collection of sea-going catastrophes, the book commences with tales from 1176 BC and brings the reader right up to date with more modern disasters. The book is divided into 8 parts which are headed; Antiquity and the Classical Epoch, Medieval and the Renaissance Ages, Early Modern Times, Late Nineteenth Century, Recent Times (which covers the period 1904- 1923), Second World War (Axis), Second World War (Allies) and finally the Current Period.
This is a hard-back book which the author also describes as an anthology. I don't quite understand the use of that word because the content does not match the description of "anthology" found in my dictionary - that said, the word is irrelevant. Altogether, I did find the book to be quite good. In several cases the detail was far too little for such a tragic event and this left me wanting to know more. Unfortunately the absence of any bibliography did not show me where I might look to find those further details.
The reader who knows his subject will find a few elementary errors (for example; the Birkenhead did not have the "HMS" prefix because she was a troopship and not a warship! Furthermore, she is described in the book as "a brigantine rigged sailing ship" when, in fact, she was a "brigantine rigged steamship." It is because she was a steamship that the author is able to describe how her captain put her "auxiliary paddle wheels full astern."
My final problem was the way in which the author uses explanatory notes. Every so often a small number appears against the text. In order to discover the additional information associated with each number, the reader must turn to pages 232-235 in order to look up that number and read what is says. There are 57 such numbers throughout the book and (for me at least) that was 57 interruptions to the flow of my reading. Far better to place each note at the bottom of the relevant page where I can glance at what it says - and carry.
Nevertheless, this is a good read and a few minor errors should not spoil any reader's enjoyment.

brush strokes. Never before have I read such conjecture...truly, I am appalled by the liberties Farr takes in construing the facts to suit her case. Indeed, I too am of the opinion that Marie Antoinette and Fersen were lovers; however nothing concrete has ever surfaced in any correspondence before and after the Queen's death to concusively determine the exact nature of the relationship. According to the publisher, Farr makes use of previously unpublished documents...really? Which ones? Did I miss something? This message is less a review to benefit other readers than a severe admonition to Farr: you have given the public nothing with this tissue of loosely woven fantasy...seemingly your fantasy. Stanley Loomis wrote the definitive book on this subject with The Fatal Friendship. Don't flatter yourself, Farr.

Queen of Fashion: What Marie Antoinette Wore to the Revolution

Product Description
The Austrian whore , accused of every imaginable sexual and political crime - or saint, pure and unsullied? Neither was true, but the life and tragic death of Marie Antoinette have, over the centuries, assumed almost mythical proportions. She was fourteen, married to an obese, uncouth husband who could not consummate the marriage. In her loneliness she turned to the young, sympathetic and attractive Axel Fersen, who soon became for her that most loved and loving of men . Their devotion to each other was known only to a few at Court and lasted for their entire lives. In this moving study, using contemporary and other documents, Evelyn Farr peels back layers of libels and misinformation which continue to obscure the fateful story of the love between the French Queen and the Swedish Count.
Customer Reviews:
This book is a waste of time and money!.......2006-07-06
It is beyond my comprehension how so many books that are fiction try to pass for true history. Evelyn Farr's work is one of them, perhaps one of the most notorious examples. Rarely have I seen such sloppy research and wild conclusions drawn from scant evidence. At least Carolly Erickson is honest about her "Hidden Diary" fantasy and calls it a "novel." Farr's book provides some interesting tidbits such as the queen learning to waltz at Petit Trianon but when one compares that to some of her other outrageous affirmations one does not know what to believe. Gentle, pious King Louis XVI is portrayed as a man who roasted cats for fun and did not mind his beloved wife openly having children with another man. This is as far-fetched as biography can get, a total distortion of known facts. For those interested in the friendship between Marie-Antoinette and Count Fersen, it would be better to read Loomis or Cronin, who present the evidence meticulously, even if you do not agree with their conclusions, or even Seward (who did not think Fersen and the queen were more than platonic friends.) It is a sensational ploy for biographers of the queen to discuss a mere allegation and theory as if it were a proven fact.
Written for a Market.......2003-04-13
I agree with the sentiments of reviewer who wishes that publishers would take a vacation from publishing M.A. books for awhile...sadly I am sure we will see more...
They will push authors in their stable to crank out yet another rehash...
This book is also indicative of another lamentable trend...editors are spell checkers not fact checkers...while this is not as bad as Schom's book on Napoleon which lists both dates Josepine died in the index (both are wrong) it would be nice if they could have people who know the subject give it a fact read.
I agree with the sentiment that the Fatal Friendship by Stanley Loomis is a good book, however I suggest Le Notre's biography of M.A. as a more balanced and better researched book than some of those mention...what gives Loomis balance is that he has written some "essays" (I can't say he is a biographer)in his book Paris in the Terror. It is also what gives Le Notre balance. He has done excellent biographies of Robespierre and a misnamed biography of M. F-Tinville which goes into great detail on the trial of M.A.
Castelot and Cronin are journeymen who certainly do an adequete retelling...but they were written for the popular market...as were their other biographies of Napoleon, Louis XVI, etc.
Le Notre is definately the person you want to discover...no really good library is complete unless you have a complete collection of the Le Notre books of time period...I also suggest his books on the September Massacres and the Noyades of Nantes.

** Don't waste your money **.......2000-10-19
The best thing this book has going for it is the Bibliography - because if you read that you will be enlightened as to some other books which you would be far better off investing in. Apart from that the book has a 'pretty' cover - so if you want to waste your money on a 'pretty' picture & a good Bibliography then go ahead & buy this book. Do yourself a favour - skip this one & invest in something like Joan Haslip's 'Marie Antoinette' or 'The Fatal Friendship' by Stanley Loomis, or even 'Louis and Antoinette' by Vincent Cronin.

brush strokes. Never before have I read such conjecture...truly, I am appalled by the liberties Farr takes in construing the facts to suit her case. This message is less a review to benefit other readers than a severe admonition to Farr: you have given the public nothing with this tissue of loosely woven fantasy...seemingly your fantasy. Stanley Loomis wrote the definitive book on this subject with The Fatal Friendship. Don't flatter yourself, Farr, the "story" has been told often enough (and more accurately) before you.
One of the French Revolution's most passionate stories........1999-03-05
It's about time an author focuses on the relationship between Marie Antoinette and Count Fersen. Their relationship is as important and historic as that between Marie and the King, yet most biographies leave it to footnotes. Farr's story moves with exciting and horrifying pace. The emotional (and mortal!) costs born by those closest to Marie Antoinette and Louis XVI are conveyed to a point of agony. Count Fersen's character is most romantic, almost as good as Sidney Carton, but better because it's true.
But it's the nature of this story to be passionate. I was looking for more substantiation of their romance. I felt some of the connections were lost in Farr's story and some of the character names were confusing. Thank you for the biography in the back - indispensible. I was also disappointed by some of the assuptions made. Lost documents and correspondance incryption muddle the facts and Farr does not fully convince me that the assumptions made are true.
Even with these limitations I completely enjoyed this book (from the library) and am upset that it is not available to purchase for my library.

Fun, simple story.......1999-11-10
My 3 year-old picked out this book and requested that we read it many, many times. After about twenty readings, I realized the appeal of the stress-free action. The egg rolls and rolls, but in time there is a natural resolution to the problem. There is no bad guy. The egg, like the gingerbread boy, keeps going, but in the end you have a fuzzy chick. As it turns out, my 6 year old is exactly at this reading level. After this book, she felt confident enough to tackle the Little Bear book. The Chick That Wouldn't Hatch was a big hit at our house.
