Too often Birth Stories are tales of horror, fear, or disappointment. In this refreshing and reassuring book, nineteen women share with us the other side: positive, joyful birth stories that include water births, C-Sections, VBACs, long labors, painful labors, short labors, and births with and without drugs. Zimmer tells these birth stories in clean, strong prose, and her closing chapters on taking control of your own birth experience will be helpful--and inspirational--to pregnant women or to those planning pregnancy.

Excellent reference material.......2007-09-11
This book is very detailed and for the most part satisfyingly complete. The illustrative photographs (or in the case of airplanes that were never photographed, rare original concept drawings) are very clear and effective. Service histories are often sparse in favor of development and technical details, but if you're in the market for a concise dictionary of Japanese aircraft you'll probably appreciate the attention to the harder to come by details.
Amazing book for serious readers.......2006-01-02
this is the best book about Japanese Aircrafts ever done...my first impression was: an old book..it smells like grandpa... where are the colours???, but when I read the first page, I understood I had got the best information in a resume book...More than 100 aircrafts, each aircrat has one or more black and white picture, specifications, three view draw and extensive text with explanation of variations, roles, desperate missions, etc.
You can find a clear explanation about the japanese code name used by Navy and Imperial Army and of course American Code Name.
Finally you can find at last pages a sinopsis like index to get easily the page in the book for each aircraft....did you know japanese had aircrafts to catch easily P-51s, Corsairs and B-29s???...read it, and understand why they couldn't use them.
You have to waste a lot of time trying to get and resume this information by internet and even so, I'm sure you won't get all....My respect for this work.
Rene is the expert!.......2003-03-07
Much in the same way that William Greene is the expert on German Aircraft of WW-II, Rene J. Francillon has researched this subject (off and on) over a period of about 30 years. The orignal edition of this book came out in the 1970's and has been updated as information from the files of the US Department of Defense has become declassified and "Pubic Domain".
One of the most interesting of the facts that one may come across is that many talented German Aircraft designers TRAINED Japanese aircraft design engineers during the 1920's and early 30's, because the Germans were prohibited by the Treaty of Versailles to engage in the design of war planes in their own country. This led to a close working relationship between German and Japanese warplane designers and a great deal of commerce between the two countries in war time designs.
Someone may eventually write a refernce book on this subject. I would if I had time.

Japanese Aircraft of the Pacific War.......2002-06-26
When I bought this book, in March 1981, it still had a stylish black-and-white cover with red text and a Hinomaru on the spine, but apart from that the book above is the same standard reference I still use for Japanese planes. Though the texts are rather short, and there are no colour paintings or photographs in the book - as with all other books in the Putnam series -, really all Japanese planes get mentioned. Combined with the two books by Donald W. Thorpe about Japanese camouflage and markings you have a good starting point for research of about literally all planes flown by the Japanse from 1937 till 1945. To really top it off you could also buy the eight Osprey/Aircams about Japanese planes, or all 16 'aircraft in profiles', which would give you more additional information about colour schenmes and markings, and also some aditional photographs, but the backbone of your Japanese library would still be the book by René J. Francillon, Ph.D.
Simply The Best.......2002-06-20
This work is simply the best available on Japanese warplanes. All major and minor types are detailed, including each model's varients. The detail is incredible. There is a weapons section that details Japanese aircraft mounted guns and ammunition. There are plenty of good black and white photos and good 3-view drawings. This book is a must for the WWII aircraft afficianado.
Book Description
Originally published in 1957, this enduring classic—the first-ever English publication cowritten by a Japanese suicide pilot—remains a touching and insightful look into the world of the kamikaze. This edition, now completely revised, reflects the valuable insight and perspective gained by the author since the time of the book’s initial publication. From the age of 15, Yasuo Kuwahara began a life of military service that included suffering through brutal basic training, participating in ferocious aerial combat against the Allies, and avoiding a suicide mission when an atomic bomb was dropped in Hiroshima, near his hometown. From being handpicked for kamikaze service to finding the discipline to die for the emperor, this history presents a firsthand account of the fascinating life of a kamikaze fighter pilot.

Kamikaze is an overwhelmingly insightful and vivid look into the life-or-death intersection of war and culture.......2007-10-07
Now in a newly revised and expanded 50th anniversary edition, Kamikaze: A Japanese Pilot's Own Spectacular Story of the Famous Suicide Squadrons is a classic biography published in 1957 about the famous suicide squadrons of Japan. Co-author Yasuo Kuwahara tells his story of entering military service at age 15, enduring training so severe that nine men of his squadron committed suicide, qualifying for fighter pilot school, and surviving fierce aerial combat. Co-author and university literature teacher Gorden T. Allred has recently worked to improve the literary impact of Kamikaze, by revisiting each word and sentence without changing any elements of the story. Kamikaze is an overwhelmingly insightful and vivid look into the life-or-death intersection of war and culture, and is highly recommended.
My favorite book in all the world. .......2007-09-14
I'm an avid reader, and this is my favorite book ever. Read it, and you'll never watch grainy footage of Kamikaze attacks without tears in your eyes and understanding in your heart.
This is a brilliant book.
The Unbelievably brutal and brave world of Japanese soldiers.......2007-04-18
In basic training, Kuwahara and the other cadets were beaten with clubs, learning to endure pain and to disregard their own lives. In flying school, physical abuse was encouraged and Kuwahara was nearly beaten to death by his hancho. When these loyal young cadets finally graduate, they are no longer boys, but hardened men willing to plunge their bomb-laden planes in a suicide dive onto the deck of U.S. Navy carrier.
Some Kamikaze pilots lived for only one purpose -to die for the emporer. Although inwardly doubting the cause, all were willing to do anything in defense of their homeland.
Yasuo Kuwahara was one of them, amd he tells this extraordinary story of life and death in the last nine months of World War II. This excellent book will percolate within you, and elicit a visceral response to this young mans incredible journey. For me, I gained a tremendous insight into the desperate young pilots of the suicide squadrons. That he survived to tell this heartwrenching story makes it among the most incredible stories of World War II.
This book reads like a novel. It is a literary work like no other biography I've ever read. The fact that it is true makes it even more compelling.

Massive Typos and Errors Don't Spoil a Good Yarn.......2007-09-24
While this book must have been published without benefit of an editor or proofreader, and some of the author's prose is amateurish, it's a good story. I am about two-thirds of the way through the book as I write this, and would gladly recommend it, with a warning about the errors and typos. Apparently a few people in the film industry thought enough of it to schedule it for production as a motion picture for 2008, according to the Internet Movie Database. The story is based on real events, and a large flying boat did indeed make its escape as described. Of course, the Indiana Jones style characters and their adventures are the author's creation. I hope they do make the film. I think it could turn out to be a delight.
FLAWED!.......2006-03-31
"Escape of the Pacific Clipper" could be a great movie--but George L. Flynn filled this book with anachronisms, factual errors, bad spelling and worse grammar. I could fill a book with these things, and they bother me--even if this is supposed to be historical fiction. For example, "Navy Lt. Elmes" didn't act like a code breaker--she was too free with classified information. Not that this character is remotely realistic for 1941--she does curse like a sailor, but the US Navy and Pan Am had some strict notions about profanity around outsiders. There is a difference between a flying boat and an amphibian--as a former Air Force officer, Flynn should know that a flying boat isn't an amphibian aircraft! During the flying boat era, long-range short-wave communications was by manual Morse Code--it had to do with readability over long distances. Oh, yes, when a flying boat hits a floating obstacle such as a log or boat, the airplane often is destroyed. I could go on, but I'd rather not waste your time. This book is seriously flawed--even as mere fiction.
There are some good things about this book. The illustrations are very nice. I like indexes--even this is more of a historic novel than a history. I thought it was the latter.
Be aware of what you are buying.
You've Been Clipped.......2005-03-13
Escape of the Pacific Clipper is often found on the bookshelves of shops in air museums such as the Museum of Flight in Seattle along with aviation histories.. This is unfortunate because such placement lends credibility to a book that has none. True, it is a work of historical fiction, but even historical fiction should be accurate in its details. For example, it is December 1941 in Auckland, New Zealand and the commander of the Pacific Clipper "...wanted the two radio men ... to try to jerry-rig a radar system to help them the rest of the way." I doubt anyone had any airborne radar systems just laying around in New Zealand in 1941. Even better, a passenger on the flight, a woman Navy lieutenant speaks Japanese and is able to decipher high-level Japanese military messages without a deciphering machine. Quite a feat for a woman Navy lieutenant (if there was such a thing) in 1941 or at any other time. Then we have the incident with the Japanese submarine during the flight from Surabaja to Trincomalee. The Pacific Clipper overflies a surfaced Japanese submarine and suddenly we have the following dialogue: "Captain, men coming out from below, onto the deck, running to the deck gun. Looks like a five millimeter. What are your going to do?" Indeed, what can anyone do when the Japanese start shooting a deck gun whose caliber is smaller than a .22 caliber rifle? With such egregious inaccuracies, what can we expect of the rest of the detail in the book? Beyond that? The book's dialogue is down right sappy. Even the old time Saturday matinee serials had more dynamic dialogue that this book. Well, why go on. This book is a waste of time. Don't waste your money.
One of WW2's most amazing aviation adventures!.......2003-02-10
This story begs to be made into a motion picture. The story of a handful of American men beating the odds (and the Japs) in returning their amphibian aircraft back to the states via the long route... around the world!
The editing, or lack thereof, is the worst I have ever red (intentionally mis-spelled). That flaw is all that causes my rating not to receive 5 stars. ENJOY.
Escape of the Pacific Clipper.......2000-05-05
wmcca10011@aol.com May 4,2000 Opportunity missed! A great plot idea spoiled by historical inaccuries, a poor knowledge of aviation and air navigation and a total lack of critical editing. Needs a couple of re-writes under the quidence of a tough knowledgable editor.
Book Description
God's Samurai is the unusual story of Mitsuo Fuchida, the career aviator who led the attack on Pearl Harbor and participated in most of the fiercest battles of the Pacific war. A valuable record of major events, it is also the personal story of a man swept along by his times. Reared in the vanished culture of early twentieth-century Japan, war hero Fuchida returned home to become a simple farmer. After a scandalous love affair came his remarkable conversion to Christianity and years of touring the world as an evangelist. His tale is an informative, personal look at the war "from the other side."

johnarthur.......2007-01-03
The Second World War completely changed its major participants and exacted some huge sacrifices from all involved. This and other books about the people who did the fighting shows how similar the attitudes were on all sides. The main character changes some of his thinking after the war, but his thoughts and actions during the war are really interesting, especially when compared to the thoughts and actions of the people on other sides.
The Providence of God.......2006-09-05
If ever a book (other than the Bible) showed the divine hand and providence of God, this is it. I wish I could have met the man.
A Japanese Fighter Pilot becomes an Evangelist.......2003-05-13
Excellent detailed story of Pearl Harbor's lead Navy pilot who through special circumstances wrought only by God found himself after the war travelling in the USA with Billy Graham and preaching the Gospel in Christian Crusades.
Reconciliation in the midst of Clash of Civilizations.......2001-10-24
An awesome true story. Definitely one of the three best books I've read in the past decade. In a time like this of Osama bin Labens and shocking inter-civilizational conflict, Fuchida's life story shows how true reconciliation and inter-cultural brotherhood can be experienced. It gives hope in spite of the huge obstacles to inter-cultural understanding. A powerful human interest story. Don't miss it!
A materfully written and truly inspirational book!.......2000-08-16
A friend of mine introduced me to this book in April of this year. He told me it was unlike any book about the Pacific war that he had ever read. Although skeptical at first, I sill went ahead and purchased the book. I left it on my book-shelve for several months and forgot all about it. As I began packing up in July to move I noticed this book again, so I picked it up and began reading it. I found the style of writing extremely fluid, and the chapters were concise. This well balanced account of Mitsuo Fuchida life traces it from his days as an Imperial naval aviator to Christian evangelist. 'God's Samurai' is a truly inspirational book filled with numerous accounts of honor, bravery, loyalty, and sacrifice - all the codes of a Samurai warrior. I have enjoyed this book tremendously, and I have just begun reading, 'Midway: The Battle That Doomed Japan: The Japanese Navy's Story' by Mitsuo Fuchida, Roger Pineau (Editor),Masatake Okumiya(Contributor). Both 'God's Samurai' and 'Midway' are 'must-have' books for anyone who is truly interested in the Pacific war and naval battles!

Book Description
World War II's naval battles between the United States and Japan have been the subject of many books, popular movies, and documentaries, but the very important story of the fighting between United States and Japanese aircraft carriers is often lost in broader discussions of the Pacific naval war.
This work concentrates exclusively on the fighting between the American and Japanese aircraft carriers, examining how strategies were planned and carried out on both sides. Presented are the stories of the USS Hornet, which launched the B-25s of James Doolittle's daring raid of Tokyo in 1942; the USS Yorktown, which suffered fierce attacks during the Battle of Midway; the USS Lexington, which refueled and rearmed Hellcats during the Great Marianas Turkey Shoot; the USS Enterprise, the leader of a motley assortment of cruisers and destroyers left to hold a very precarious line in the campaign for Guadalcanal; and the Japanese battleship Yamato, sacrificed for a suicide mission against 900 aircraft bombers.
Customer Reviews:
I was disappointed.......2004-12-09
I expected a truly informed book of WWII aircraft carrier combat. That is, I wanted to know how the two sides used the assets they had available and why they chose to use them in that way. I wanted to know how a carrier group goes about trying to protect itself while trying to inflict harm on its enemies. I wanted to know what tactics the torpedo bombers adopted to successfully approach enemy shipping and what tactics the defending aircraft used to destroy the torpedo planes before they could launch while avoiding their own flak. None of these things are presented. For example, Imperial Japanese Naval air operations officers Genda and Fuchida are referred to as geniuses but I have no idea why. What was it about the way they chose to do plan air operations that qualified them as geniuses?
What we have here is a fairly standard treatment of the most famous WWII Pacific aircraft carrier engagments. I wanted to feel the anti-aircraft gunfire riddle my wings and smell the blood on a burning flight deck. I wanted to know what formations the various aircraft used on various missions and why. I wanted to know how it was possible that a pilot could maintain such good navigational skills while engaged in life or death combat that he could rendevous with a ship that was no longer where it was when he flew off the deck. Instead we get that a certain squadron launched from a certain carrier attacking a certain other carrier and either did or did not achieve a number of hits.
Admittedly, I am spoiled having just read Shelby Foote's excellent Civil War. Oh, what might have been! If the author had drawn character portraits as concisely and described battles as vividly as Foote, that would have been a book!
Nice book but..........2004-08-27
I have spent a lot of money on this book which contains lots of information about bloody fighting in WW II only to realize that the author used MOSTLY american literature. It is a shame that he did not consider some japanese books also.
Awsome.......2004-07-05
The greatest wwII book ever written. Degan is a masterful writer. A must for any wwII history buff.

Book Description
From Pearl Harbor to VJ Day the Japanese focused their aerial fury on the U.S. Navy. This illustrated history portrays the many ship attacks in chronological order in a series of well-documented photos, many never before seen. They show the desperate attacks, heroic attempts at defense, the winners and the losers. Suicide pilots caused such havoc that the American public was not informed of the facts until long after the war ended.

Calhoun's book is entertaining to read; interesting details........1999-01-02
Reviewed by Johanna Granville, Clemson University, Clemson, SC USA
This book has several strengths. Calhoun examines Soviet decision making toward the Hungarian crisis. This detailed book is written in an entertaining style. The book consists of two case studies; half of the book is devoted to the British role in the Suez crisis. However, although this book was relatively recently published, it does not contain any recent archival findings. The author apparently knows neither Russian nor Magyar.
Book Description
If you wash dishes with binoculars around your neck, own more spotting scopes than shoes, and read the Bird Chat listerv before and after your first cup of coffee, then you can only be one thing: an ardent birder. Biology professor and lifelong devotee of our fine feathered friends Todd Newberry has written 50 short essays that range from meditations on bird-watchers' daily events to philosophies of why they do what they so ardently love to do. THE ARDENT BIRDER is the first book in the vast field of popular birding literature to focus on the birder, not just the bird. A thoughtful gift for the bird-watcher who has everything, THE ARDENT BIRDER includes 75 delightful drawings and includes suggestions for how intermediate-level birders can hone and share their skills in the field.
Customer Reviews:
A Future Classic.......2007-05-30
This book will be a future classic for birders. I read this book twice within a few days. I never do this! I started birding a few months ago and reached number 99 yesterday. Todd's book has been a great help for me.
A pleasant book for the intermediate birder.......2005-11-29
The hard core will find little new in this book, but intermediate birders looking to improve their skills will enjoy and profit from the short essays. The author's style is easy and pleasant, reminding me a bit of Milton White's low-key (if not low-affect!) "Listen, the Red-eyed Vireo," a work Newberry cites several times. The final section, on leading successful bird trips, is likely to be the most practically useful (perhaps even to more advanced birders), but the sections on field craft can also be read with profit by the ambitious and the befuddled. The central section's "philosophical interlude" is no less well written, but not as incisive as, say, Levine's "Lifebirds" or Alan Powers's fine "Birdtalk."
I was particularly pleased to see the American Birding Association and its publications praised and recommended.
A good book for birders on the cusp of advancement!
