Book Description
This study surveys post World War II efforts to enhance practical cooperation among European countries in the provision and use of military forces. The author, a distinguished former defense official of the U.K., begins with the earliest proposals for cooperation in 1947 and provides a succinct summary of collective security efforts since then. The main focus of the study is the European Defense and Security Policy (EDSP) project launched by European Union heads of government at their Cologne meeting in June 1999. Quinlan reviews the major issues and future prospects regarding this important initiative, and argues for a collective European defense that will complement but not supersede the role of NATO.
European Defense Cooperation is the first title in the Wilson Forum series from Woodrow Wilson Center Press.

highly entertaining history.......2005-08-24
in reply to the claim that Tabari is almost as blasphemous as Rushdie, Professor Mohja Kahf drily remarked that its no surprise, since both are writers of fiction! Any historian who writes a couple of hundred years after the event and reports dialogue, witticisms and even facial expressions is obviously writing a lot of fiction, but fiction or not, its high drama, presented in vivid detail. Tabari makes no attempt at social or economic analysis and has little to say about what the "common people" might have been doing and why, but his history is one of the prime sources for all the famous stories of islamic history and reading it is the best way to get an idea of what the times were like. Particular details may or may not be true, but the development of the community was based on exactly these stories and their impact is real even if their content is sometimes not. Tabari also has a flair for the dramatic. reading his account of the assasination of Usman or the martyrdom of Hussain makes one think of the amazing movies that could be made based on this material! well worth a read....

Book Description
In the introduction to his History, al-T'abari declared his intention to append to it a biographical work for the reader's convenience. Only a collection of excerpts has survived, however. It was first published as part of the Leiden edition of the History and is now presented as a volume in the T'abari Translation Project. It brings together biographies of Companions, successors, and scholars of subsequent generations; many chapters are devoted to women related to the Prophet who played a role in the transmission of knowledge. The biographies vary in length and style, ranging from a mere identification of a person to long accounts and anecdotes.
This volume represents a long tradition characteristic of Muslim culture. Muslim scholars developed biographical literature into a rich and complex genre. It was intended to be an auxiliary branch of religious study, aimed at determining the reliability of chains of transmission through which traditions were handed down. More often than not, however, works in this genre contain valuable historical information of the kind often ignored by the authors of mainstream history books. Even though not a complete work, this volume is thus not merely a supplement to al-T'abari's History but also a source in its own right, often supplying new and rare insights into events and social conditions.

First four years after Hicrat.......2001-07-08
This Volume covers the first four years after the Hicrat. Among various excurcios to neighbouring tribes or caravans the volume covers Badr and Uhud battles. Marriage of Mohammed (AS) to HZ. Aisah, conflicts with Jews in the city of Madina. Tabari uses Ibn Ishak, Ibn Hisham as his sources and time to time provides variant stories on same subject with chain of isnads. Contrary to his Tafsir, he does not say which one is more acceptable to him. The translators have some preface and time to time expalanatory commentary in Fine Prints which I found most of them unacceptable. I did not appreciate sometimes their twisted opinions in a book which is supposed to be a translation. But again I appreciate their work for making this book available to English readers.

Book Description
This volume of al-T'abari's History has a particularly wide sweep and interest. It provides the most complete and detailed historical source for the Persian empire of the Sasanids, whose four centuries of rule were one of the most glorious periods in Persia's long history. It also gives information on the history of pre-Islamic Arabs of the Mesopotamian desert fringes and eastern Arabia (in al-Hira and the Ghassanid kingdom), and on the quite separate civilization of South Arabia, the Yemen, otherwise known mainly by inscriptions. It furnishes details of the centuries'-long warfare of the two great empires of Western Asia, the Sasanids and the Byzantine Greeks, a titanic struggle which paved the way for the subsequent rise of the new faith of Islam. The volume is thus of great value for scholars, from Byzantinists to Semitists and Iranists. It provides the first English translation of this key section of al-T'abari's work, one for which non-Arabists have hitherto relied on a partial German translation, meritorious for its time but now 120 years old. This new translation is enriched by a detailed commentary which takes into account up-to-date scholarship.

Book Description
Slim and affordable, FEEDER BIRDS OF EASTERN NORTH AMERICA features Roger Tory Peterson's classic art in a larger format designed especially for the eighty million North Americans who watch and feed birds. This easy-to-use, at-a-glance guide simplifies identification by including only the birds that frequent feeders. And to make it even more convenient, the most commonly seen birds come first, followed by those that are harder to identify or that rarely visit feeders. Range maps, descriptions of birds and foods that attract them, and illustrations are on facing pages, so identification is fast and easy. The brand-new introduction covers important bird-feeding topics, including types of feeders and where to place them, birdbaths, kinds of food and when to feed, plantings that attract birds, and solutions to problems with squirrels and cats. A handy quick-reference list tells what kind of food each species prefers, and a feeder checklist provides a record of birds as they are seen.
Customer Reviews:
Useful and not intimidating.......2007-02-27
I like this book. It is inexpensive and easy to read. It is not an extensive resource for every single bird one might see, but that's not why I got it. There are lots of big heavy field guides. This one has birds by family or type on each page, with notes about what they like to eat. In the front it has short sections about types of feeders, food, plants, predators, etc., and they are nice and short with lots of white space, so they are easy to read and there is room for notes in the margins.
Then there is a short section about how to look at birds for identification... with black and white drawings to illustrate what is meant by how they fly and what are wing bars, crowns, etc. Then there is a handy quick reference list of common species and their preferred foods, and finally it gets into the color photo section of birds by family, with short descriptions and range maps.
There are apparently other books of this type, but this was the only one they had at Barnes & Noble the day I was shopping, and I am very pleased with it. After I read a bit of this book, and "All the Backyard Birds: East," a pocket type guide by the American Bird Conservancy, I quickly rigged a rudimentary platform feeder and plan to build or buy a better one. We have a few different kinds of feeders but it was educational to see how many additional species might be attracted to the platform type.
Handy convenient book.......2005-11-27
I bought this book as a gift for my elderly parents who like to use a guide for identifying birds at their backyard feeder. It has large, colorful pictures that are nice for that purpose. This book was recommended by a local newspaper writer who writes a "bird" column weekly. I am happy with my purchase and so are my parents.
Feeder birds without page turning.......2000-10-26
This is more or less a rehash of the peterson field guide. It has the same (enlarged) pictures that are in the original guide. In addition, it has the type of food that each bird is likely to eat as well as the range map next to the description. I suppose it's a little convenient to have all the feeder birds grouped together, but , other than that, I felt disappointed with the book. There was some (but not enough) information on actually attracting birds and setting up feeding stations. Personally, I found the Stoke's guide to attracting, identifying and understanding feeder birds to be more helpful.
