Damage Them All You Can: Robert E. Lee's Army of Northern Virginia
ASIN: 0765305275
Release Date: 2006-02-07 |
Book Description
How the unprepossessing Ulysses S. Grant, whose military genius ultimately preserved the Union, came to the forefront of the Civil War is a story as surprising as it is compelling. Forced to resign his commission in the peacetime army for drinking, at the outbreak of hostilities he suddenly found himself a colonel, and then a general, of volunteers. Grant made the most of these unexpected commands. Whip the Rebellion were Grants watchwords every day of the war. This dramatic narrative offers fresh insights into both the public and personal lives of Grant and his immediate circle.
Customer Reviews:
Easy read full of information.......2006-09-12
I have been a Civil War buff for over 30 years and have seldom paid attention to Grants western phase of the war. I am more of an army of northern virginia and army of the potomac aspect. HOwever, this book not only filled in many blanks for me, it also has opened me to wanting to read many of the books referenced in it's covers and to explore this aspect that I have largely ignored.
The book was well written and easy to read, and I recommend it to any enthusiast.
A good basic history.......2005-06-08
A "beer n pretzel game" is a war game that is easy to learn and fun to play. While they do not require a great deal from you, you can have a good time with them. George Walsh's Civil War books are "beer n pretzel" books, easy to read, informative and great fun. They are an excellent introduction to a subject. While providing the more experienced reader a good review relaxation and enjoyment. My expectations are that I will enjoy myself without having to think overly much. "Whip the Rebellion" meets my expectations while surprising me a couple of times. First and foremost, this is a fun read while being informative.
The book provides a good overview of Grant's rise to command without burdening the reader with all of the complex side issues. The book gives us a glimpse of the early relationship between Grant & Halleck, with enough details to help us understand it. Did Grant drink? This book has a simple but very good and complete coverage of the subject. The complexities of Mead's command problems are not given adequate coverage but are mentioned in passing, as they did not change the main story line. The book lacks maps but this is to common lately. Faulting Walsh for not writing a complex history is like faulting Pfanz for not writing "beer n pretzel" history. You need to know your author or look the book over.
Only for neophytes.......2005-03-11
If the name "Ulysses S. Grant" means nothing to you other than "that bearded dude on the fifty dollar bill," this book might serve as a decent enough "introductory" volume. Otherwise, it is nothing more than yet another dismal waste of dead trees. The author (working, I assume, under an extremely short publishing deadline,) merely spliced together material from older, weightier books on Grant and the Civil War--and I'd be shocked to learn that he bothered to read any of those books more than once.
Call me finicky, but when did original research and intellectual curiosity become unfashionable in historical circles? I am not a professional historian, but even I am aware that there is a wealth of unpublished and/or ignored primary source material on Grant's personality and career, just begging to be mined. Why do so many writers instead settle for cranking out lazy retreads of the same old books?
Let me add another, admittedly less significant complaint--this is yet another Grant book that features one seriously ugly cover. Why is it that the covers of so many recent books about an attractive man like Ulysses Grant perversely display pictures that make him look like a dyspeptic werewolf?
"whip the rebellion".......2005-03-07
If u already know the history of GRANT in the CW, this book adds nothing. ZERO. With the provocative subtitle of Grant's rise to command, I expected tactical and strategic analysis and evaluation of grant's development as commander. This is just another rehashed history of Grant's campaigns with a few vignettes thrown in. By the way, it has NO MAPS or PICTURES.
USELESS. DO NOT BUY THIS JUNK!

Good Overview.......2005-11-28
I very much enjoyed this book as a good overview of cruiser development. The stuff on the different types of cruisers, life aboard, and how they are used was great, and I really liked the detail that the author gave to ship's systems. If you're looking for a good overview of modern cruisers, this is the one.
Disappointed.......2005-10-09
This book does not live up to its title - it is mostly a series of descriptions of ships sizes, speeds and armaments. There is almost no discussion of the impact made by cruisers, other than on the building of others. In general it is superficial, with little discussion of the detail of technological changes which lead to design development, eg in propulsion systems, metalurgy and gun development, with the exception of american missile and nuclear power technology post WW2 - it is disappointingly ethnocentric.
There is almost no discussion of the impact of specific commanders and notable cruises, or operational histories - probably the greatest being Thomas Cochrane in command of HM brig Speedy, and since the days of sail such as Karl Von Muller of SMS Emden are mentioned in passing, with no detail of their successes and failings. The role of the German Hifcruizers is passed over and there is no discussion of the impact of disruption of sailing of convoys and individual shipping by the presence , successful or otherwise of various cruiser forays, nor any discussion of the details of significant cruiser vs cruiser actions eg Coronel, the falklands and so on.
The failings of various classes of cruisers are glossed over with simplistic comments such as they were not very successful, without discussing why.
The book contains a variety of really basic factual errors - for instance p117 radar does NOT "consist of machinery that transmits sound waves over great distances"
Overall, if you want an overview of the impact of cruisers etc, you wont get it here.

If you're looking to add an Andean gull, Dalmatian pelican, Indian skimmer, or Fiji petrel to your life list, you'll want to have this beautifully illustrated photographic guide, with more than 740 plates, close to hand. Each of the 325-odd seabird species is described with a range map indicating principal breeding grounds, along with informative identification notes distinguishing seasonal coloration and commenting on characteristic behavior (such as the white-chinned petrel's penchant for trailing after ships in mid-ocean). The tubenose identification keys at the end of the book are notably well made, and the index contains a handy checklist for the dedicated spotter.
Book Description
This pocket-sized guide, now back in print in the United States, is unprecedented in its concept of illustrating photographically the more than 321 species of seabirds in the world. It comprises an exciting collection of over 740 seabird photographs by more than 300 of the world's leading seabird photographers and researchers. The majority of these photographs have never been published before, and include pictures of some of the rarest and most enigmatic birds in the world--species such as the recently discovered Amsterdam Albatross, the Chinese Black-headed Gull, the Relict Gull, and the near-extinct Short-tailed Albatross. Of special value are the flight shots of some of the most difficult-to-identify groups of birds.
Seabirds of the World represents easily the largest and most complete collection of seabird photographs ever published. It is complemented by a highly readable and succinct text intended to aid identification in the field.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent book........2007-01-18
The is full of detailed colour photos and the text is informative and concise. I would thoroughly recommend this book to anybody interested in seabirds.
One of the most complete guides of seabirds.......1999-08-18
This is one of the most complete guides to identifying seabirds. This book makes it easy to identify each species by providing photos, descriptions, illustrations & a helpful index of English names.
Two to four photographs of each bird are located in the front. English & scientific names are given below along with the page the text is on. The age of the bird & month the photo was taken are also noted.
Next, a text description is given for each seabird. This includes height, weight, traits in age group & their habits. Distribution is both described & shown on a map.
Each of the six seabird orders is described pointing out their different characteristics. There is also a detailed drawing of the topography of a seabird. Another large illustrated section points out the distinct features of some of the birds.
Book Description
To human eyes, the remote Aleutian Islands of Alaska look barren and rocky. The waters seem frigid, the high, sweeping winds intolerable, and the seas rolling. Yet to seabirds of the northern hemisphere, these waters are idyllic, a mosaic of habitats teeming with underwater food and alive with currents of wind for soaring. Join Sophie Webb on a voyage in search of seabirds. Just as she did with her award-winning My Season with Penguins, she once again inspires our curiosity. As she watches for, writes about, and paints the graceful mottled petrel, the huge black-footed albatross, or the clownish tufted puffin, she makes tangible the delicacy yet hardiness of these seabirdscreatures that have been on the earth much longer than humans yet remain vulnerable to disturbances in the health of the ocean.
Customer Reviews:
Great book for kids who dream of being Field Scientists.......2006-06-23
This is a fantastic book for showing grade schoolers what life as a biological field scientist would be like. Webb's journal format really brings the trip to life in a personal way. If you are a birdwatcher, you will enjoy this book as a well written trip report with great information on sea bird ecology and behaviour.
The information is great, but the illustrations are even better. The book is filled with sea bird paintings from the author that help her share the amazing spectacles she has seen while in the field.
Great book, quick read, beautiful illustrations.
Wonderful Book!.......2005-01-03
Quite simply a joy to read. The paintings are wonderful and truly depict the variety of marine life that Ms Webb writes about.
A book for all ages!

Book Description
This readable guide to the seabirds of the world provides updated material on every aspect of this fascinating group of birds. Ornithologist Anthony J. Gaston has devoted decades to the study of these beautiful and engaging birds, and he explains in detail what is special about being a seabird and why—like us—they live a long time and reproduce very slowly. Enriched with personal anecdotes from the field and remarkable photographs from John Chardine and Tim Lash, this book will appeal to students, birdwatchers, ornithologists, and naturalists alike.
The book covers the gamut of seabirds. It includes information on seabird types, adaptation and plumage, how they are distributed into communities, feeding behavior, migration, breeding, and the consequences of coloniality. The author concludes with a thoughtful analysis and discussion of the population dynamics and life-history strategy of seabirds.

Book Description
"This book, the first one to portray a tropical seabird community, treats the 22 species of seabirds of the Hawaiian archipelago from a conservationist point of view. . . . A class book that is well researched and an important addition to seabird literature."--Charles E. Keller, Indiana Audubon Quarterly.
"This review of Hawaiian seabirds represents one of the very few accounts of a tropical seabird community. . . . For anyone hoping for a perspective on tropical seabird communities, I strongly recommend this book."--P.G. H. Evans, Journal of the British Ornithologists' Union

No one should be without this book.......2003-07-15
Not unlike Rousseau on the road to Vincennes, I found my waistcoat soaked with tears after I read this book. The poignant and heartwarming story of a young Finnish-American's experiences in the high-stakes, no-holds-barred world of competitive birding, this book recounts the author's battles against prejudice and how he prevailed despite all the odds against him. Buy this book right now, and feel your heart soar with the author's as he tells the heart-wrenching story of how, nearing the end of his resources, he found a wounded seabird and nursed it back to life, at one point even suckling it at his own bosom. A truly life-affirming reading experience!
A thrilling read! Not to be missed!.......2003-06-16
After I read this book the first time I was so excited I had to be sedated. It's harder than you might think to spot Hawaiian seabirds where I live, which is in California, but I keep a pair of binoculars handy in the hopes that a Hawaiian sea bird will get confused and wander across the Pacific to my neighborhood. Once I thought I had actually spotted a Hawaiian seabird and, since I felt I should have proof, I set up an antique cannon I found in my grandfather's attic and loaded it with black powder and rock salt. The recoil from the gun, however, knocked it back three feet and smashed two of my toes, and I missed the bird to boot. So, while this book is excellent, I think it should include more practical tips about birding so that other people can avoid my mistake, and a section on first aid would be useful too.
I didn't think I would like this book . . . ........2003-06-03
. . . but I was wrong! This book, quite literally, took my breath away and changed my life. I used not to think much about birds, particularly not about seabirds of Hawaii. Now, having read this wonderful book, for the past four years I've spent virtually every waking hour of my day looking for seabirds of Hawaii -- in the skies around my home, on our pond out back, everywhere! I hope everyone will read this book, and will enjoy it as much as I have.

From the author: The Gannet Islands contain the single most important seabird colony in Labrador, both in terms of numbers and species diversity. In 1992, we discovered arctic foxes (Alopex lagopus) on these islands during the breeding season. Of five islands examined, two had resident foxes (in one case breeding), two had been visited by foxes earlier in the season, and one had no foxes and had not been visited. A comparison of these islands in 1992 and with our detailed studies from the early 1980s, revealed the effect that foxes had had on seabirds. On islands with foxes, Razorbills (Alca torda), Common Murres (Uria aalge), and Thick-billed Murres (U. lomvia) had ceased breeding. Atlantic Puffins (Fratercula arctica) continued to attempt to breed, but fox predation on adult birds and eggs was intense and breeding success low. On islands visited by foxes earlier in the season, the number of breeding Razorbills was reduced, and breeding by Common Murres was delayed by 2-3 weeks.
