This book describes many different and useful ways of understanding personal relationships from a dialectical perspective. It is written for scholars in higher education, both faculty and students, across many fields within the social sciences and the humanities who seek answers to questions about how people relate to one another. The book is valuable for all scholars who pursue new ideas because it models a form of scholarly communication in which:
* multiple voices can be acknowledged as valid;
* the worth of one perspective is not measured by the denigration of another; and
* difference is celebrated as conducive to learning rather than threatening to it.
The contributors emphasize the characteristics of their dialectical view that set them apart from other dialectical authors and describe their methods of studying relationships from a dialectical perspective. Following the Bakhtinian perspective, they honor the values of dialogism by respecting different and sometimes contradictory views, assuming that these views can be valid, and joining in a discussion with the editors and other contributors about their emerging work. They also acknowledge that the chapters in this text are part of an ongoing process to frame and reframe emerging ideas, and allow the dialogue that occurs within this frame the freedom to express creative, unique ideas.

I found this book to be much more accurate than any internet source about the same subject. Further credibility is lent by the fact that many of those interviewed reflected upon the same events, from different perspectives (e.g., the so unfortunate death of the their contemporary idol, Marina Raskova). As with all eyewitness accounts, you can also get a grim reality of life during the war in Soviet-held territories. Imaging a mother, who has to put her children into an orphanage, because her skills are needed on the front-line. There is nearly no account at all without mentioning the death of a husband, brother or father in the war - everyone seems to have lost someone very dear. This book is a must-read for every fan of IL-2 Sturmovik air combat simulator.
A book with death defying acts of bravery and sacrifice, told by the real people........2005-09-09
That's exactly what this book is. Their story. The Soviet Airwomen in WW2 were very overlooked by the international community. This book is one of the best sources of information on them. When you read it you hold your breath during the tense parts, even though you know they make it out fine.
It's amazing how these girls were able to laugh in such a desperate time, and indeed, in many places where it is defined, the girls found that things happened where you just couldn't afford not to laugh. For example, their boots were so big, because they only wore male suits, that when given the command to face another direction, one girl turned the complete opposite direction but her boots stayed in the same place!

I loved this book about the brave women who fought in world war 2. Not many people had known that women flew in combat so long ago. This book will make the readers see what it was like when everybody had to fight. These women are heroines. I like the photos of the women in their old age with all their medals. They look like anybodies Grandmother! I would be proud to know them. This book makes me feel like I do.
Veterans remember.......2000-05-14
In this excellent book, surviving Soviet veterans of World War ll are interviewed about their service in the Red Air Force. Not only pilots and navigators, but gunners and ground crew also, relate their experiences of what is commemorated in Russia as the Great Patriotic War. Ms. Noggles'recent photos (taken in the early 1990's) contrast poignantly with the black-and-white photos, taken over half a century ago, of the young airwomen in uniform. I highly recommend this book. Read about the courage and sacrifice of these aviators, and the horrific circumstances and conditions which they endured, and remember that these were perfectly ordinary young Soviet women. Some had personally experienced Stalinist oppression, but when their country's existence was threatened, they all voluntarily joined in her defense.
A SUPERLATIVE "EYE-OPENER"!.......1998-08-11
A superlative book..action packed! I was astonished at their courage and patriotism. (Who would actually go out on nightly bombing attacks in a PO-2? They did!) Their continual struggle against the Nazis was made so much more burdensome under the unjust tyranical yoke of Communism. What fine women and what a great "eye-opener".

Ain't No Such Thing as a 'Trash Bird'.......2003-08-13
I'll say, categorically, that Jack Connor's book, The Complete Birder, is the best single introduction to birding I've ever seen. Period. It will greatly shorten a beginner's learning-curve, and it will help reinforce good birding techniques in the more experienced. And--bonus!--it's a totally great read!
Listen, being a beginning birder has to be one of the hardest things in the world. There's a gazillion things to memorise or to look at depending on whether a bird's male or female, young or old, or molting its plumage, or it's a certain subspecies, or color-form, or time of year, or the direction of light, or the moon's in Capricorn. There's a further kabillion calls & songs to learn, and if you're like most people, your auditory memory is about on a par with your ability to whistle all the parts in Wagner's Ring Cycle. There's migration stuff, which can get pretty complicated sometimes. To a beginning birder, far too many bird species just look and sound just the same and it can drive you nuts for the first little while until, as the British birders put it, 'you get your eye in' on them.
But learning how to become a birder is more than just memorising plumage patterns, flight-styles, calls, & songs; it's more than getting the best bird guides, & optical rig, & software, etc. It involves many things you just won't know until you find them out, that's where Jack Connor gives us such a gift with his book, 'The Complete Birder'. He helps organise that initial chaos with an easy humor (check out his 'warbler four-count', and his wry account of his run-in with a certain hawk in Florida), shared wisdom, and a hard-headed practicality. He understands the places where beginners are likely to run into technical & conceptual snags and head down blind alleys, and he helps you avoid them with solid advice & suggestions. He understands the interior processes of birding and describes them simply and compellingly so that you can appreciate them consciously as well.
Especially, he helps you learn to pay attention to what's important, to be a complete observer. So you'll never see a 'trash-bird', a bird so common & familiar that it becomes furniture in front of that hot rarity, or wallpaper behind it: instead, every bird will be an object of wonder & curiosity. That sounds simple yet it's anything but, and Connor's wonderful book will help you achieve it better & quicker than just about anything else I've ever heard of. I've had my copy for nearly fifteen years (the optical stuff is a bit dated but his general advice is still totally valid), and I still re-read it, not only for new insights & salutary reminders, but just for the heck-yeah fun of it.
Essential birdwatching reading.......2000-02-20
For any active birdwatcher who goes beyond their backyard this volume is essential reading. Connor writes in a lively, entertaining, but also very educational style. Chapter on optics will be very helpful for beginners, but probably best are his chapters on various bird groups where individual species can be difficult to learn (I especially like the chapters on warblers, hawks, and shorebirds). Out of the multitude of birdwatching books available there are few, if any, that fill quite the same intermediate niche as this volume does so well. Warning: there are no color pictures or photos here for those especially interested in such, but this now classic instructive text is well worth the price for avid birders.
The Complete Birder--THE Essential Guide.......2000-02-05
As a novice birder, Jack Conner's guide impressed me as the #1 essential book next to the field identification guide of your choice. Although it's over 12 years old, the Complete Birder has slightly dated but still essential info on optics, chapters on acoustics & migration, and lots of tips for identifying birds. The chapters on warblers and hawks should be required reading for all birders! Those living near the shore have similar chapters. It's full of important information beautifully presented. Don't miss the forward by Roger Tory Peterson!
Take your identification skills to the next level.......1999-06-09
This is a GREAT book that takes you beyond the basics and the common field marks in field guides. It has chapters on optics, seasonal birding, gulls, warblers and shorebirds, etc.
Years of experience are condensed into simple approaches to identification and topics like identifying shorebirds by their habitat choice and behavior or identifying all warblers by their head and face patterns only, a great help on our recent warbler migrationt trip.
I can't recommend this book highly enough if you want to get to the next level of birding. It's also very well written with lots of anecdotes and examples.
