Disclaimer: This review is based on a quick skim of the book in a friend's house, and therefore may possibly miss something important...

Somehow, a book has been put together on Feminist Parenting, and apparently all the contributors are female.

This must be an oversight. Feminist parenting must, will, and does have an impact on male children (indeed, this is discussed by some of those who do write). Where are their views? Not, it would appear, here.

What a missed opportunity.

5 out of 5 stars A must read for all feminist parents.......2000-05-17

The essays in this book are insightful, funny, inspiring and so very REAL. I love this book and I wish that it were more widely available.

    4 out of 5 stars A Seminal But Long-Forgotten Battle.......2007-05-01

John J. Gallagher's "The Battle of Brooklyn 1776" is well researched and written. It provides considerable insight into one of the Revolutionary War's seminal but long forgotten battles.

Gallagher provides considerable background on the British and Colonial armies (Continenal Army and milita), their leaders and the sympathies of the people of New York in 1776. He places the Battle of Brooklyn in its proper strategic perspective and, where possible, lets the participants tell the story. It is well that he does, for the author's style is a bit dry.

Nonetheless, "The Battle of Brooklyn 1776" allows the reader to better appreciate how close the British came to ending the Revolutionary War once and for all. More importantly, it illustrates the shortcomings and talents of George washington and his commanders as military leaders. At the tactical level, the battle was a disaster for the Continental Army. But Washington's withdrawal from Long Island with the bulk of his forces and equipment intact - an event which won the American army a great deal of grudging admiration from British generals - portended a long war for King George III and his army.

Those unfamiliar with America's struggle for independence between 1775 and 1783 will find this a useful read.

4 out of 5 stars Revolution Nearly Lost in Brooklyn!.......2007-01-10

Having read this book as well as Barnet Schacter's on New York during the Revolution, both works I find are flawed in different ways. The likeable thing about Gallagher is that he manages to convey the story in less than half the time. The hard thing to realize about the battle of Brooklyn is that it really wasn't much of a battle. The author here makes some grandoise statements about a new age of citizen warfare being ushered in with the advent of this battle. If that is so then the complete defeat of Washy's army bodes ill for that development!

Gallagher is on better ground when he provides a nice overall of tactics and warfare in the 18th century. He gives a good account of training and recruitment in both armies. One of the more interesting things he mentions is that due to the two-rank line used by both sides in the Revolutionary War, casualties from musketry and artillery tended to be light. This is an interesting point, and one not brought out by many historians of the period. In europe stronger lines of 3 and sometimes 4 ranks were employed, which provided greater strength, but also more density. Hence increased loss from fire. A point well worth considering when looking at the battles of the Revolution. Most historians miss this completely, or are not interested in it.

Gallagher provides more of a military history in general on this subject, but he does waste a lot of time with preleminaries. More than half of the book is spent providing the standard background for the causes of the Revolution, etc. While certainly required for the general reader; when a book is as short as this one is it seems almost pointless. When we get down to the battle itself Gallagher gives us not much more than Schacter does. The British flank march completely compromises Washy's position, the outlying forces are swept away clear and simple. The confusion of command between Putnam and Sullivan no doubt made a bad situation worse. Washy's complete lack of strategic perspective shows up totally here. The defense of Brooklyn, much less Manhatten itself was a foregoon conclusion. Washy was mad to consider defending Brooklyn, much less manhatten in the first place. He committed his ill-trained army to an impossible task. That he did not lose completely was due more to how the British under Howe chose to wage their campaign.

Most American authors try to put a bright light on what is essnetially a dark canvas. At Brooklyn the Americans ran. Period. A few units stood their ground, in particular the Marylanders, but no one else really did. The reason why American losses were not greater was because they did run. Some authors try to say that British losses in killed and wounded were greater than Americans at this battle. This is true partly because the British had to attack some strong positions that held for a time until pireced by the assault. British losses were often greater in this regard because Americans usually ran once the British bayonet began to strike home. Still, of the 1,000+ casualities sustained by the Americans here, more than most US historians care to admit fell to British musketry and bayonets. The British loss was still well below 400. As the great Maurice de Saxe said in his memoirs of warfare in this period, more of the enemy can usually be despatched when he runs as opposed to when he stands. To reserve fire until the enemy line breaks was considered the most effective tactic of this period. In that respect many dozens of rebels must have been shot down as they ran before British bayonets.

Gallagher provides some understanding why the British did not storm the heights right away. This has often been one of the major criticisms of Howe's victory. Why didn't he follow up? After marching all night to outflank the Americans, the British were disorganized, and tired. They had also foght a running battle with a fleeing enemy. Howe did not believe his army was in any condition to storm Brooklyn heights, memory of Bunker Hill or no. Of course this does not explain why it was not done the following day. If we look more closely at Howe's position we can perhaps explain his rationale. His commission was both a general and peacemaker. He wanted to convince the rebels to come back into the royal fold. He could best do this by showing how futile their resistence to the crown was. To have destroyed Washy's army in Brooklyn would have been gratuitous, excessive. Such loss of blood would have defeated the purpose in mind. In restrospect it is easy to find fault with this strategy, and it would prove to be the only chance the British really had to crush the Revolution in its infancy.

The battle of Brooklyn needs to be looked at from several perspectives. Gallagher gives us a good start, but I think a more comprehensive work still needs to address all the issues here.

5 out of 5 stars Brooklyn under siege, 1776.......2004-09-05

In spite of one or two glaring mistakes in John Gallagher's book, BATTLE OF BROOKLYN, 1776, the author has provided us with a glimpse into a little known confrontation that had an enormous impact on our nation. When most people think of the significant battles of the Revolutionary War, they think of Bunker Hill, Saratoga, Yorktown, or Trenton. But New York City, and Brooklyn specifically was the scene for the first great battle.

Unfortunately, as Mr. Gallagher sympathetically conveys, the battle was a disaster from beginning to end. Over a thousand of Washington's troops were injured, captured, or killed. It was only with the brave and selfless assistance of the Marylanders, that the American troops were able to evacuate. Mr. Gallagher, with the skill of suspense novelist as well as historian, describes Washington's daring escape from Brooklyn, at night, in an intense fog.

I'm just scratching the surface here. This is a fascinating account of an undeservedly overlooked event of the American Revolution, and Mr. Gallagher deserves utmost credit for preserving its memory.

5 out of 5 stars Great History of Both the Battle and (Really) Old Brooklyn.......2002-06-07

John Gallagher's narrative in this short book is very comprehensive while still being easy to read. It is interspersed with great little historical tidbits and teasers as well, and provides some great detail to the old 18th century villages that make up the City of Brooklyn today.

The reader gets the impression that Gallagher fully enjoyed writing on The Battle of Brooklyn and conveys this sense of historical importance very well.

In addition to the great narrative, there are many facts revealed about both the Revolutionary War and different parts of Brooklyn that both professional historians and casual history readers may not have known.

A highly recommended, quick and insightful read.

5 out of 5 stars Winning does not come easy.......2001-08-31

In most history books, it is usually called The Battle of Long Island. But since it took place in Brooklyn, it is more recently referred to as The Battle of Brooklyn...It took place in August of 1776. General Howe, the winner, versus General Washington, the loser (he won later)...The book relates that American counter attacks in the vicinity of Old Stone House created time for Washington to save the remainder of his army...The men involved here were primarily "The Maryland 400." and they are well remembered. Old Stone House was rebuilt and stands near 5th Ave. and 3rd St. An American Legion Post at 9th St. honors the area where most of them are believed to have been buried. They are also honored by a monument in Prospect Park.

5 out of 5 stars Great NEW American History Book for Middle Grades.......2007-08-17

BY THE SWORD is a touching Revolutionary War story told from a unique perspective. A young teacher, just twenty-two years old, is moved to enlist in George Washington's army. Neither he nor his beloved horse, Highlander, is prepared for battle. As Selene Castrovilla begins her story, "Benjamin Tallmadge had never killed before." When he fires his musket for the first time, he takes off, "not looking to see if he'd hit anyone." Young readers will identify with his reluctance.
The Battle of Long Island unfolds with breathtaking intimacy. We are close to the man and his horse as they weather a British assault, the lack of sleep, poor food, drenching rains, contradictory orders, and their own fears, in order to help save Washington's army from annihilation. Selene Castrovilla's prose evokes the anxiety of war with painterly details, but without drenching young readers in the carnage.
When Benjamin, in the heat of retreat, forgets Highlander, he receives permission to go back, by boat, to retrieve him. So this story is also about a brave young man who risks his life to save his beloved horse. As cannonballs from the fierce, advancing Hessians (mercenaries on the British side) narrowly miss Benjamin's retreating boat with Highlander safe on board, readers of all ages will be cheering.
Bill Farnsworth's expressive oil paintings on canvas enhance the text, from the flash of musket fire to the thick blanket of fog that kept the British fleet idling long enough for Washington's army to escape. Detailed endpaper maps enable readers to follow the troops. The author's research notes, timeline, suggested places to visit, and detailed bibliography of sources makes this an absolute must-have book for all teachers and students of history, for anyone interested in the birth of the United States of America. .

Do you want your kids to actually read a book, enjoy it and learn something too? Well, this is the book for them. It's a good read, action packed, interesting and surprise, surprise ... you learn some local history. Selene Castrovilla sucks you into Benjamin Tallmadge's world even if history is not your thing. Coupled with wonderful illustrations by William Farnsworth this book is a must have.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful and key Battle of Long Island/Brooklyn book .......2007-07-19

This is THE wonderfully written and well researched book from the time of the centennial of what was the largest, though often overlooked, battle of the American Revolution: The Battle of Brooklyn or The Battle of Long Island. From lead-up, the relating of the battle, and the aftermath it is probably the best overall and most readable such book it has been my pleasure to read and own a reprint of. Whilst not perfect, it is close to it, and has been invaluable when it includes the original large maps as a resource for my studies and trips I've guided.

                    Book Description

The Second Edition of Florida's Birds is a major event for Florida birders, new and old. Each section of the book is updated, and 30 new species are added. Also added are range maps for certain species and color coded guides to months when the bird is present and/or breeding in Florida. Now with color throughout, each bird is illustrated three times: with the text about the bird, in the index listing, and on a plate with similar species for help in identification. Thus, Florida's Birds is now an even better field guide. Unlike the other books available on the birds of Florida, Florida's Birds is also a reference that goes beyond its usefulness in the field. Sections on bird study and bird feeding provide practical advice for enjoying Florida's birds; and sections on bird habitats, threatened and endangered species, exotic species, and bird conservation will assist the reader in understanding the ecological and cultural landscapes that have created one of the world's unique avifaunas.

I got this book for the purpose of identifying species while reviewing photographs I've taken. I haven't used it in the field (yet) but it has become an excellent reference guide. There is a lot of information, the decriptions are well-written and the sections about Florida ecology and environments are also helpful. I'm a native Floridian and I found myself frequently learning new things while reading this book. I highly recommend this book.

I got this book to take along on a trip to Florida planned for a couple of months from now, so at this point it's too early to say exactly how helpful it is. However, based upon previous trips to Florida, it seems to be pretty good so far (although there are two birds I've previously seen that I still couldn't find in this guide).

This is no reprint edition: each section of FLORIDA'S BIRDS has been updated and thirty new species added, along with range maps for species and color-coded guides to month of presence. Each bird is illustrated not once but three times, text discusses habitats and habits, and sections on bird study and feeding provide in-depth detail. A 'must' handbook for any with Florida roots.

5 out of 5 stars Highly recommended for Florida ornithologists and bird lovers.......2006-01-10

Now in a newly revised and expanded second edition, Florida's Birds: A Field Guide And Reference is a wonderful guide for Florida birdwatchers. Every section has been updated, and 30 new species added. A brief introduction and overview leads into the species-by-species listings that include the names, description, habitat, range, life cycle summary, and a color-coded at-a-glance list of the months each species can be found within Florida. Perhaps most captivating of all is illustrator Karl Karalus' full-color renditions of each bird species, in a meticulous and lifelike manner reminiscent of Audubon himself, making Florida's Birds a delight to simply page through. Highly recommended for Florida ornithologists and bird lovers.

                    3 out of 5 stars Disappointed in information--returned book.......2005-12-14

Eventhough I may not have really saved any money, I did not see any point in keeping this book once I received and reviewed it. I ordered for my son in law who lives on Fl coast and loves to fish coastal waters. He wanted a book to give information about the birds he saw then. I was hoping the size and information in this one would make it good for his purpose. This was not the case, however.
More than half of the book is concerned with ecological and birdwatching information--that is just not what he was looking for. I was disappointed in the size of photographs of the birds, but when so much is given to other aspects not that much room for bird information is left.
The quality of construction seemed good, but the spine is fairly narrow and the book needs to be opened fully to read all the text. It is possible that repeated readings may cause some pages to come loose.

Having seen the National Geographic Field Guide to the Birds I was interested in the Florida version. However after receiving the book and looking through it I was greatly disappointed. The illustrations (photographs?) are very poor as far as identifying many of the birds. The drawings of the full version are much superior. It is also very incomplete in its coverage of the birds present. Upon receiving it I tried looking up birds I had recently identified and found a surprising number missing from the book although I could see some of them in my yard trees. Florida's Birds from Pineapple Press is much better although the first edition of it is also incomplete. I kept the NG book in my library but for now I will continue to use Sibley (Eastern Birds) and Stokes (Eastern Birds) as my field guides. One thing in favor of the NG Florida book is that it is small enough to actually be carried into the field easily.

Learn about and identify birds using Stan Tekiela's state-by-state field guides. The full-page, color photos are incomparable and include insets of winter plumage, color morphs and more. Plus, with the easy-to-use format, you don't need to know a bird's name or classification in order to easily find it in the book. Using this field guide is a real pleasure. It's a great way for anyone to learn about the birds in your state.

4 out of 5 stars Good book, lacking detail.......2007-08-29

Sure, it lacks a bit of detail that I would like about the birds. Sure some of the pictures do not seem to be that clear but shesh, this is field guide. This is small enough to carry with you and the color coding is awesome! If you are new to birding, like me, then get the book.

You can always buy books that have every little detail about the bird. Use those books to study the bird before you go out. This is for when you are out and go "What bird was that?". It was almost all brown... so go to the brown section.

I now have two of his books. Will get more as I go to that state.

Mr. Stan Tekiela has established a reputation for his series of bird watching field guides. What's most unique about his approach is the fact he divides the guide by feather coloration rather than by species or groups of species. The sound recordings are of great quality and a must to have with the field guide. I highly recommend this book for those individuals who, like me, are just barely beginning to get their feet wet in this fantastic hobby of bird watching.

I have used a copy of Birds of Michigan for several years. I'll be in Orlando and Jacksonville this year and so got this for my trip. Many birds that occur in Florida are, no doubt, not included butwith several hundred documented species, it would be impossible to make a pocket guide like this with every potentially present bird.

My ONLY complaint about this series is that some birds are hard to find because they have several dominant colors and you might have to look in two or three sections to find it. But that's easier than scanning through 200-300 pages in my Peterson guide.

1 out of 5 stars Where are the birds?.......2003-06-27

Many of Florida's most interesting or unusual birds are missing from this book. Whooping cranes, Limpkin, Red cockaded woodpeckers, all of special interest and missing.
Aracaras and Snail Kites are also missing. This is a potboiler.

I have this wonderful little book, and it has stimulated my bird watching immensly. The birds are seperated by color, so if you see a black bird, go to the black section. I recommend this book highly for children, beginners, the just curious. It is small, but the pictures will help alot. Love this book!!! Buy it I think it is worth every penny

5 out of 5 stars Useful Guide for Florida.......2004-11-18

Identifies the major habitats in Florida such as sand pine scrub, mesic hammocks, salt marshes, etc. Features include about 50 pages with color artwork showing the birds (grouped by type). The adjacent page gives a brief description plus notes on preferred habitat, then refers the reader to another page for more detail on the bird.
Pluses: charts the months the bird is in Florida and also the breeding season, makes an effort to explain key differences in similar looking birds, the index is set up with little boxes so it can be used as a checklist also.
Minuses: pictures somewhat small and at times overcrowded (ducks), it's a nuisance to flip back and forth from the pictures to the detailed write ups.

4 out of 5 stars Great for specificaly Florida birds.......2004-03-10

This is a great reference book for anyone who is interested just in birds that can be found in Florida. The drawings have enough detail that most birders from beginner to advanced intermediate should find them useful. I used this book for the first few years of birding and found it to be of great value. Many people may attempt to compare this to Sibley's Guides but I would have to say that each has its advantages. Sibley's often has too much detail and does not show just the birds that you may see in one specific area. This book show only Florida birds and groups them in a logic fashion that allows for fast reference. If you are in Florida bird watching (I strongly suggest it!) then you should find this book useful. This is not a replacement for the Sibley Guide but more of a quick reference book that can be used as the primary source. Go to Sibley's Guides for fine details when in doubt but unless you know exactly where to find each bird, this guide will be less frustrating.

                    2 out of 5 stars My opinion.......2003-01-02

This field guide handy bird book to have around the house, but not so great in the field. The color illustrations offer limited variations for seasonal plumage and the color is very inaccurate. Most importantly the information and illustrations are in separate sections of the book making identification cumbersome. I recommend sticking to Sibley's or the National Geographic field guide.

Excellent color depictions, good cross referencing to information pages vs. habitat and picture pages. It is exactly as represented - a good reference guide.

                      Book Description

When the first field study of the Florida panther took place in 1973, so little was known about the animal that many scientists believed it was already extinct. During more extensive research conducted from 1981 to 1986, panthers were proven to exist, but the handful of senile, anemic, and parasite-infested specimens that were captured indicated a grim future. During those early years a remarkably enduring image of the panther was born, and despite voluminous data gathered over the next decade that showed the panther to be healthy, long-lived, and reproducing, that earlier image has yet to be dispelled.

For nine years, biologist David S. Maehr served as project leader of the Florida Panther Study Project, helping to gather much of the later, surprisingly positive data. In The Florida Panther , he presents the first detailed portrait of the animal-its biology, natural history, and current status-and a realistic assessment of its prospects for survival.

Maehr also provides an intriguing look at the life and work of a field biologist: how captures are made, the intricacies of radio-telemetry tracking, the roles of various team members. He describes the devastating intrusion of politics into scientific work, as he discusses the widespread problems caused by the failure of remote and ill-informed managers to provide needed support and to communicate effectively to the public the goals and accomplishments of the scientists. He examines controversial efforts to establish a captive breeding program and to manipulate the Florida panther's genetic stock with the introduction of relatives from west Texas.

Protection of high-quality habitat, much of it in the hands of private landowners, is the key to the long-term survival of the Florida panther. Unless agency decision makers and the public are aware of the panther's true situation, little can be done to save it. This book will play a vital role in correcting widespread misconceptions about the panther's current condition and threats to its survival.

Not really a scientific essay in my opinion, but a labor of love. A good read and something that will let you feel and fear for the future of this beautiful animal. Hats off to Mr. Maehr for taking the effort to relate his experiences... one of my favorite nature "books".... long live the panther

                      Dear readers,

Today morning before leaving for work i happen to watch National geographic channel wherein there was one hour programe on Florida panther. It's survival seems to be highly endangered due to the fact that their genetic poll being limited and in-breeding among the cats inevitable it gives a very tragic case of survival. I being an avid wildlife enthsiast from India hope that American people will defenitely do something for the survival of Florida panther.

                      Thanks
