    Book Description

"We are, all of us, foreigners to each other: editor and writer, man and woman, Californian and New Yorker, friend and friend. Dr. Tannen shows us how different we are, and how to speak the same language."
    Jack Rosenthal
    Pultizer Prize winner and editor
    THE NEW YORK TIMES
Deborah Tannen, who revolutionaized our thinking about relationships between women and men in her bestsller YOU JUST DON'T UNDERSTAND, shows that conversational confusion between the sexes is only part of the picture. In THAT'S NOT WHAT I MEANT!, Dr. Tannen shows that growing up in different parts of the country, having different ethnic and class backgrounds, even age and indvidual personality, all contribute to different conversational styles. Entertaining and informative, this is an essential complement to psychological theories of human behavior. No one who has read Deborah Tannen's fascinating look at women and men will want to miss a word of it!

4 out of 5 stars Great for both genders.......2007-10-10

I had to read this for my college Sociology class. It is an intriguing and mind opening book for both males and females. It is amazing how true it is!! Couples, partners and individuals should read this to gain a better understanding of relationships and individuals within conversing.

    4 out of 5 stars Insightful.......2007-03-25

Deborah Tannen comes from the point of view of a linguist which is not common in psychology-oriented "self-help" books. I like her analytical yet practical style. Knowing the conversational style of different cultures as well as genders can't help but improve one's communication. I would recommend reading her book "You Just Don't Understand" and if one likes that, move on to her other somewhat more esoteric books. I read them all with a highlighter in hand.

    5 out of 5 stars Seeing differently.......2006-07-09

    HOwdy,
I encourage you to buy this book, read it, and apply it. It really helped me in understanding myself and others. I think it helps all of us to see things we take for granted, and see things we never saw nor understood about ourselves.
It is a good read, and handy for future reference.

    4 out of 5 stars That's not what I meant.......2006-03-10

Although many newer books in the field of relationship communications have been published in the last few years, this title remains a "must read" for anyone wanting a beginning understanding of the radical yet unintentional differences in communication style between persons - men and women in particular. After reading this book, one begins to understand the many nuanses embedded within our verbal communications.

    5 out of 5 stars Great book.......2006-02-22

What a great book. This book opens up a world to understand all the problems in communication. It's very insightful.

"The sea is notoriously unforgiving, but it reserves its harshest penalties for those who venture beneath its surface," writes U.S. Navy veteran A.J. Hill in Under Pressure. The captain and crew of the S-Five submarine learned this gloomy fact the hard way in 1920, when they tested their new boat's ability to "crash dive"--submerse as quickly as possible--and sank straight to the bottom of the ocean. A faulty induction valve had flooded, leaving 40 men stranded at a depth of 180 feet, about 50 miles off the coast of Cape May, New Jersey. Everything seemed to go wrong: the drive motors failed, the main lighting circuits went dead, and their oxygen began to run thin. Nobody knew their location and they had no means of calling for help. All they had was their own ingenuity and the remarkable leader Lt. Commander Savvy Cooke. The story of how they managed--just barely--to escape an underwater tomb will appeal to fans of Peter Maas's The Terrible Hours (though it's worth noting that the technology behind the 1939 Squalus rescue wasn't available to the men trapped in the S-Five) and Blind Man's Bluff by Sherry Sontag and Christopher Drew. --John J. Miller

    Book Description

The true story of the American Navy's first S-Class submarine. In 1920, the S-Five was flooded with seawater when a crewman failed to close a valve during a crash dive. Submerged 180 feet below the surface, and with only 40 hours of oxygen left, the crew made naval history through their ingenuity and resourcefulness as they raced against time to save themselves.

In 1920, one of the American Navy's new-but-untested submarines, the S-Five, was stranded 180 feet beneath the Atlantic. Her electrical system, radio and one of her drive motors were rendered inoperable. She had only forty hours of oxygen left-and her batteries were giving off an asphyxiating cloud of chlorine gas.

How the S-Five's indomitable captain and brave crew worked in near-darkness to save themselves with nothing but hand tools made naval history. An amazing tale of courage, endurance and incredible resourcefulness, Under Pressure is that most remarkable of books-a true story more dramatic than fiction.

    5 out of 5 stars A Very Strong Moral...............2006-08-19

The subject matter of A.J. Hill's "Under Pressure" has been covered in the other reviews. It is a significant book and a must-have for any interested in naval history and submarines. Mr. Hill (no relation to the reviewer) has done us all a service by bringing this little-known chapter in U.S. naval history to light.

There is a very strong moral to this story. LCDR Cooke and his crew were in a desperate situation. They were trapped underwater at a steep angle. There was no light, no electricity and no heat. The threat of chlorine gas was increasing with every minute. In a display of discipline and leadership in the finest traditions of anyone's service, LCDR Cooke did the only thing he could.

It wasn't much but it was enough to start the sequence of events that eventually lead to the rescue of every man on board.

The moral to the story is no matter how bad things are, we must do what we can. Who knows there may be someone to help......

4 out of 5 stars The loss of the S-5 and the saving the submarine crew........2004-07-16

A great book about the rescue of the crew of the submarine S-5 in 1920. There have been a number of books about the loss of submarine crews but fortunately this book has no deaths (at least in this sinking). Captain Cook or Savvy as he is known manages to keep his crew alive by shifting the water in the sinking sub. He manages to tilt the submarine on end and then drill a hole in the back end of the sub, where he motioned a passing ship to save his crew. The sub turned out to be a total loss but the crew was saved.
There are better submarine books out there, but none that describes this particular sinking. The author is a medical doctor, but he does a great job of giving the reader a thrilling adventure. Great job A.J.

4 out of 5 stars Very Good Story.......2003-05-27

I've read tons of submarine storys and prefer the true ones over the fiction so this one already had a plus. The men of the S-5 should have counted their blessing everyday to have gotten out with their lives. Imagine trying to drill through the hull of a sub with a hand drill? not to mention all the other trouble they were faced with, WOW. Very good story that'll keep your attention from front to back, and great photos to go along with it.

3 out of 5 stars Heroic sailors, not a riveting storyteller.......2003-03-10

Although this story should be told, a better storyteller is needed. A.J. Hill doesn't keep the tension as high as I am sure it was in that sub. There are too many off topic discussions that draw the reader away from the story instead of giving background information. I was moved more by Terrible Hours by Peter Maas.

    5 out of 5 stars Crew Members.......2003-03-01

I enjoyed the S-5 as a former Stetson Home brother, Frank Somes was on the S-5. It would have been nice if all the members of the crew were listed. After all, this was their story

4 out of 5 stars Culture and Values: A Survey of the Western Humanities.......2000-07-21

This is a very good book for introducing students to art, literature and music from the beginning of the Renaissance until the 1990s. Many illustrations are included which help the reader comprehend what the text is saying about works of art. Selections from works of writers studied are included in the back of the chapters in which they are mentioned. However, no footnotes, commentaries or definitions are included in these selections by the authors, which may sometimes be frustrating because some writers are harder to understand than others. As a student who used this book in my humanities class, I would have to say that overall this book is an excellent survey of humantities because it provides good information not only about the writers, artists and musicians but also a good background of the social/political events of the times during which these people lived.

5 out of 5 stars Great Book For All Interested Western Civilization.......2000-03-30

I, as an undergraduate student studying culture and civilization, was very impressed by the content of this title. It covers everything from the effect of the Mona Lisa on society to Guernica. It goes into great detail about how art, music, and archetecture has affected society throughout modern times. The quality of the book is unprecidented as the photos and painting prints in it are beautifully presented in a very aesthetically pleasing fashion. This is a must buy for all interested in the affect of the arts on society and culture. As this is the only textbook that I am keeping this year, I completely recommend it for those who may not be taking any subject associated but are just interested in its subject. If I could I would give it 1000 stars.

                      Book Description

Featuring dramatic, detailed, and scientifically accurate color illustrations by the acclaimed wildlife artist Robert Bateman, this beautiful book is written on a level that can be enjoyed by older children as well as by adults who are newcomers to bird watching. The book opens on an autobiographical note, describing how, at the age of eight, the author stopped to watch a chickadee's gymnastics in a hedge. As an adult, Bateman has sketched and painted birds in every corner of the world, and has developed deep insights into bird habitats, behavior, and survival skills. This book's stunning illustrations, supplemented with descriptive notes, show a variety of familiar birds in their natural settings. Readers who study these vivid illustrations of the black-capped chickadee, the nuthatch, the downy woodpecker, the sparrow, the cardinal, the robin, and other species will come to see these fascinating birds in a new light. The more than 65 color illustrations, supplemented with simple, direct text and interesting sidebars, make this unusual volume the perfect introduction to birding for nature lovers of all ages.

5 out of 5 stars "Birds are our neighbors. We should get to know them".......2006-04-16

This book offers profiles of birds children might encounter in their yards or communities(hawk, chickadee, heron, nuthatch). Each bird or set of birds (for examples, herons and kingfishers share an entry) has a two-page spread wtih facts about the birds' physical structure, range, habits, etc. as well as a beautiful, detailed illustration of the bird(s).

Every few pages, a two-page spread offers general facts about birds, including physical characteristics("Feathers are made of the same materials as our fingernails"), life cycle, migration, attracting birds to your backyard, and a whole spread of the different types of sparrows found in North America.

The writing style is friendly and approachable, as if one of your favorite middle-school teachers was telling you about his favorite birds. The real treasures are the illustrations. Finely drawn and carefully colored, these images are as detailed as a photograph, but with a lot more soul!
