5 out of 5 stars Doctor, What Should I eat?.......2006-03-18

EXCELLENT, excellent, excellent! A common-sense approach to controlling your own ills without resorting to pills. I have purchased many copies to give to friends and the results have always been positive. What you eat is the basis of your health. Remember,(just like computers), garbage in = garbage out. Look up your personal problem, then read how to take care of it.

I love Dr. Rosenfield, but this is a useless book. Sorry, doc.

4 out of 5 stars Finally -- A sensible approach to nutrition and disease!.......2000-06-13

This was my first time to read a book by Dr. Isadore Rosenfeld and I was pleasantly surprised! I found this book to be user-friendly and sensible in its approach to how one might use food as an added treatment for ailments, without negating the usefulness of modern medications and other treatment modalities. I think the best part is that Dr. Rosenfeld avoids outlandish promises. As a matter of fact, he offers his information as just that -- "food" for thought. He is consistent in advising readers to converse with one's own health care provider about the information he is suggesting. And Rosenfeld is careful to tell the reader when he has limited knowledge or available information, about a certain vitamin, mineral or food and its relationship to the particular ailment being discussed. The book is formatted in a way that allows one to flip around, not necessarily reading the chapters in order. The author also repeats information when it is relevant to several diseases, so as not to assume the reader has read any previous chapters where the data appeared. Thank you, Dr. Rosenfeld, for offering up some palatable information that is sound, moderate and sensible, in a non-judgmental forum.

4 out of 5 stars not comprehensive, offers useful and trustable suggestions.......2000-04-10

The book is a big list of disorders in alphabetical order, from acne, actinic keratoses, aging, and alcohol through flatulence and halitosis to vaginal yeast infection. For each one there are several pages outlining the features of the disease and how diet plays a role. Rosenfeld talks about what is known to work, what might work, and what probably won't work even if you thought it would.

Straightforward, not comprehensive, but clear in what it does cover. At least one or two useful suggestions are given for each disorder. And from a reputable source.

                Book Description

The whirlwind of Europe's longest war in half a century has produced this powerful collection of personal narratives--essays, letters, and poems--from refugees fleeing Bosnia and Croatia. Taking us behind the barrage of media coverage, these stories tell of perseverance, brutality, forced departure, exile, and courage. With startling immediacy and in moving detail, speakers tell of stuffing a few belongings--a handful of photographs, a rock from the garden, a change of clothes--into a suitcase and fleeing their homeland.
Contributors from all ethnic groups and every region of Bosnia and Croatia describe their sense of lost community, memories of those left behind, recollections of town squares that no longer exist, and homes now occupied by neighbors. The editors of The Suitcase, themselves representing the diverse peoples of the region, traveled to camps and temporary homes across the globe to collect these stories. An antidote to apathy, this work moves beyond and outside the vicissitudes of daily politics to portray the human tragedy at the center of present-day Bosnia and Croatia. Probing the intimate losses of countless individuals, it delivers a powerful indictment of injustice, militarism, prejudice, and warfare.

5 out of 5 stars Poignant and Powerful Voices of Refugees.......1999-03-11

Who are refugees? People who fled the wars in Bosnia and Croatia are scattered in Missouri and Ontario, Germany and Austria, Israel and Pakistan, and they are displaced to other towns within their own countries. They are not voluntary emigrants whose bags are packed with hopes in search of a dream. They may be wealthy, or at least they may once have been. The refugee cleaning floors for minimum wage may have been a surgeon in her own life. The eight-year old girl may be the only one in her family who has learned English, so it is only she who can speak with government officials and store clerks. Refugees are anyone and everyone. They are professionals and farmers and little boys and criminals and poets, but mostly they are women and children and the elderly.

The Suitcase gives voice to the people "without context". They speak of their dreams and their losses. Their poems are here and sad scenes of small things washed away forever by tides of war. "War taught us a lot. How the fear makes people irrationally greedy. It is difficult to resist becoming greedy. It is almost like an instinct. To possess, to hold on to something. In shelters, to hold on to somebody. To hold on to your prayer, even if you never prayed before". Some refugees long only for the day when they can return to their hometowns to begin to reglue the shards of their old lives. Some can speak only of Bosnia's beauty or the pleasures of a cup of coffee with friends.

Others close and lock the door on the past with determination. "We arrived here safely. Everyone is fine. Please do not write us or try to contact us. We do not want to be reminded of anything", reads the postcard sent by a Bosnian family after they arrived in Canada in 1994.

The book is well-edited and well-organized along five broad themes. These are followed by three powerful afterwords, of which Dubravka Ugresic's is the strongest as she muses on the fact that the people of the Balkans are one people. Divided by the same language, they look alike, and yet "not one generation in the Balkans manages to escape war, in every family there is at least one killer and one killed, new life only begins on somebody else's dead head." There is one minor error (p.11, Vukovar was attacked in 1991, not 1992).

The Suitcase rings powerfully and true. The simple message here is that refugees are people, and the lives they lead are but a shot away for us all.

5 out of 5 stars EXPERTLY EDITED AND BOTH A TRAGEDY AND DELIGHT TO READ.......1997-09-13

The Suitcase is a wonderful and sorrowful journey into the hearts of an oppressed and victimized land. the personal stories are of those who, throughout history have had no voice. Any person with a sense of history will surely feel the magnitude of the plight of a refugee.

                  Book Description

From the bestselling author and renowned mindfulness teacher, scientist, and educator. . .a guide to living a meaningful life. This follow-up to the widely praised national bestseller Wherever You Go, There You Are is yet another revolutionary offering from Jon Kabat-Zinn, showing readers how the power of mindfulness can bring radical change to their lives. In the national bestseller Wherever You Go, There You Are, Jon Kabat-Zinn struck a chord in contemporary society that continues to reverberate to this day. It has been embraced by politicians, business leaders, and celebrities and endures as a classic with readers. In his groundbreaking new book, Dr. Kabat-Zinn teaches us how to harness the power of mindfulness to effect profound change in our personal lives and in the world. As stress continues to exact a toll on everyday life, people are increasingly turning to ancient, meditative methods, which have been tested by science, to relieve the ill effects and become more focused, healthy, and proactive. Kabat-Zinn has been for decades at the forefront of this mind/body movement and the revolution in medicine and health care it has spawned, demystifying it and bringing it into the mainstream. In Coming to Our Senses, he shares how every human has the capacity to mobilize deep, innate resources for continual learning, growing, healing, and transformation through mindfulness.Woven into eight parts, Coming to Our Senses uses anecdotes and stories from Kabat-Zinn's own life experiences and work in his clinic to illustrate healing possibilities. At its core, the book offers remarkable insight into how to use the five senses -- touch, hearing, sight, taste, and smell, plus awareness itself -- as a path to a healthier, saner, and more meaningful life. This is the definitive book for our time on the connection between mindfulness, health, and our physical and spiritual well-being.

                  4 out of 5 stars Good....but a little redundant.......2007-07-05

I love Jon Kabat-Zinn's work.....and this book is certainly worth getting and reading. However, it is quite long and some of the sections didn't seem to add anything useful. On the other hand, some of the sections were amazing and worth reading more than once. If you like Jon Kabat-Zinn's other writings (e.g., wherever you go there you are, full catastrophe living) you will probably be happy with this book as well.

1 out of 5 stars A few good observations, but mostly new age rubbish .......2007-01-30

After seeing Jon Kabat-Zinn on McLaughlin's One-on-One I was intrigued and decided to buy this book. I was sorely disappointed. He makes some good observations (e.g. about ADD and the 24/7 lifestyle), but offers solutions based only on far-eastern philosophies (yoga, meditation, etc). Not what I expected. I would not recommend this book to devout Christians or Muslims. Better stick with the Bible or the Koran, or the writings of accomplished Biblical or Koranic scholars.

1 out of 5 stars Kabat-Zinn does not have the answers to the world's problems........2007-01-05

Kabat-Zinn, to his misfortune, is like many people who gain a bit of fame for doing one thing well: they come to believe that that they can do many things well and, worse yet, that they have the solutions to the world's problems. Almost always, that solution is dependent upon people behaving or doing what they do.

This book is not about the meditative strategies that made Kabat-Zinn justifiably famous in some circles. Rather, "Coming To Our Senses" is a confused, disjointed, rambling, disconnected and amazingly naive and ignorant treatise on how the world will be saved if only everyone could be induced to meditate.

Tell that to those pleasant folks who are beheading people because they don't share their ideas. Or to the punks on the street who take what they want with whatever violence they deem appropriate. Tell that to the smarmy politicians and others who feast on the taxpayer's money.

Kabat-Zinn should have stuck to helping people use mindfulness (his term of art for meditation) to help them overcome stress.

Kabat-Zinn displays amazing levels of naivete, ignorance and gullibility in these pages when he leaves his area of expertise. He leaves no doubt that he is a child of the 1960s. This is apparent in his endless litany of common left-wing political nostrums.

Kabat-Zinn's writing style in this work is absolutely awful. I counted 97 words in one sentence and it was not an exception. In many ways it seems that Kabat-Zinn is imitating --- poorly --- Joyce and Proust. One chapter is devoted to a description of the descent of the author's father into Alzheimer's. It is, in its own way, moving, but has nothing to do with meditation.

Kabat-Zinn seems to think that like Barbara Streisand and Sean Penn, that he has something to say not merely on the state of the world but about how humankind can save itself. This is the kind of senseless monologue that you would expect to see as a self-published work from a vanity press.

I simply cannot overstress how awful "Coming To Our Senses" is. If you want to learn about meditation, Kabat-Zinn's earlier works are far, far better. If you want New Age nonsense, then you might find this wretched work satisfying.

                  Jerry

5 out of 5 stars The Tree of Mindfulness.......2007-01-04

In this book, Kabat-Zinn takes the time and space to discuss not just a leaf or a branch, but the roots, trunk, and branches of mindfulness meditation. While many recent works on meditation or Buddhism are really extended essays exploring a single concept or practice, this work stands out as a comprehensive engagement with and discussion, evaluation and integration of mindfulness meditation practice. The author speaks from the perspective of one well acquainted with the whole tree, and integrates the practices and insights of mindfulness meditation into the entire scope of life, not merely the meditation cushion or the yoga mat.

I restrained myself and read only a chapter or two per day, allowing my mind the time and space to make connections between the ideas Kabat-Zinn presents and the varied elements of my experience. Doing so enriched my own meditation practice significantly and strengthened my resolve and ability to articulate meditation concepts to others.

3 out of 5 stars Not a very good audio book.......2007-01-03

This refers to the AUDIO book, not the book itself:

What the author is teaching here, is an important subject, and if you find yourself drawn to mindfulness or mindful meditation, I would suggest reading some books by Thich Nhat Hanh ("The Miracle of Mindfulness" and others) or Joseph Golstein or Sharon Salzberg ("Insight Meditation" and others).

Nothing against Jon Kabat-Zinn, but to my mind, he is not a very good communicator, and this audio-book spoken by him makes this all too obvious. He writes in a very complex way, using many adjectives and phrases, and long sentences (kine of like this one) that seem to me to be the writings of someone trying to impress someone.

On the other hand, Thich Nhat Hanh, whose first language is Vietnamese, writes in a much more clear and simple way, which allows one to appreciate the subject matter as opposed to finding it difficult to understand. If anything, Thich Nhat Hanh's writing style is overly simplified, as if he were talking to people who have trouble understanding what they read. So maybe you might like something in-between the two, such as Jack Kornfield's books or Joseph Golstein's.

Don't get me wrong, this book will teach you about mindfulness, and for that I applaud it. And maybe his style appeals to many people - perhaps it appeals to the intellectual, college professor or scientific types (I'm just guessing). But it does not appeal to me, at all. To me, his writing style is like a sophomore writing student trying to impress his professor that he knows how to use a lot of flowery, descriptive language. But I prefer the direct and simple approach for a non-fiction book like this. Maybe the author should try fiction...

All in all, this is not a bad audio/ book. That's why I gave it 3 stars. It does have a lot of information that is useful and interesting, and if it wasn't for the style in which it is written (spoken), I think I would have liked it much better.

All I'm really saying is, check it out before ordering it here. You may find other books that are written better and other audio books that sound better. (I wonder why this book does not have the "Look Inside" feature that most others do.)

I do think that this book would be more enjoyable to read, as opposed to listening to. Something about his sentence structure does not flow in an audio book.

                  Book Description

Two years ago author and horse trainer Linda Kohanov wrote The Tao of Equus — a daring multidisciplinary exploration of the powerful spiritual, emotional, and psychological connections between people and horses. Its provocative narrative, blending her story of prescient dreams and ancestral communication with a wide-ranging exploration of equine-facilitated therapy practices, created a worldwide demand for her workshops and lectures. She also received more than 1,000 letters from readers around the world describing their own strange and wonderful experiences with horses. In Riding Between the Worlds, Kohanov continues sharing the story of her own journey of healing and transformation and further develops the ideas introduced in The Tao of Equus, bolstering her groundbreaking theories with anecdotal evidence. Where her previous book laid the theoretical groundwork for expanding our emotional, mental, and spiritual view of horses, Riding Between the Worlds concentrates on the extraordinary stories that support this view.

2 out of 5 stars Who's the audience for this book?.......2007-10-17

I bought this book simply because Amazon advertised it to me and it had good reviews. It obviously makes a connection to certain type of people (presumably "extreme sensitives") but it didn't do much for me. I found it hard to work out who the author was actually writing for. She didn't provide insights to assist troubled people, so clearly you have to actually attend her therapy program to benefit from her knowledge. Nor did she detail what she does in her therapy with horses, so you are left wondering exactly what is happening in the round yard. I suppose if you are on the inside (ie part of the horse-assisted therapy community) this book will mean more to you than it did to me. I tried to have an open mind but sorry, I ended the book not feeling at all convinced that horses are somehow in tune with the real meaning of life just like yogis.

3 out of 5 stars Riding Between Worlds.......2007-10-09

Though overall this book is too "new age" for my taste, I believe Ms. Kohanov probably does a tremendous amount of good pairing horses with people and solving inner or repressed emotional conflicts at her ranch in Tucson, and in the clinics she presents. I found the examples she sited very believable for both horse and person, and truly believe horses can heal emotional wounds. I very much agree "it is never JUST a horse!" Horses reveal our deepest secrets and conflicts, they sense these before we even can give them words. I liked, and I promptly employed, the technique of telling my horses things about my life that I believe make me similar to each one. The horse always listens, and the verbalization is good for both. This book adds understanding to our relationship with horses by making the reader more aware of what the horse "knows" or senses immediately about us, and thus makes us more open to the horse.

                  5 out of 5 stars A Ride You Won't Forget.......2007-09-18

When I saw the beautiful cover of this book, and the intriguing title, I couldn't wait to read it. It promised mysteries and a wild ride into the unknown. Actually, the riding is transformative. The author overcomes a destructive marriage to find her way back to life through her interactions with some very wonderful, talented, compassionate and truly honest animals. A lifetime of fascination with, and interaction with horses leads her into an astonishing field of work, using members of her herd as therapy animals, in the treatment of trauma victims and people with emotional problems.

There is so much to this book that resonates, for anyone who has ever ridden a horse, or wanted to, or just enjoys watching them. Some of the stories are just inspirational. There is a wonderful section in which her beloved mare, Rasa, prematurely foals, and a community of helpers keep the young horse warm with body heat and take turns milking his dam so he can nurse. What a fantastic story.

Some of the horses are stories themselves. There's Noche, the abused horse, who is tender and kind with abuse victims. There is Merlin, a disturbed stallion, who finds love. There is Rasa, a powerful empath and spiritual guide.

I kept waiting for the book to turn New Age-y, but it's not preachy at all. This is one woman's journey that touches and heals. I won't look at horses the same way again.

4 out of 5 stars Better than her first book.......2007-01-11

Linda's second book is easier to read and has more examples of horse-human interaction. I have recommended it even to my non-horsey friends. It has definitely changed my own approach to my equine friends.

5 out of 5 stars A very important book for anyone who loves horses. Empath energy........2007-01-06

This book changed how I relate to my horse, even after a lifetime of being around horses. One of the best horse books I've ever read, yet it goes far beyond just relating to horses. Give this book to all your best friends.

". . . as the birding community has grown, the gulf between what the beginner knows and what the expert knows has also grown wider and wider. That's one of the reasons why Pete Dunne's writings are so valuable. Pete is undeniably a top birder, but he writes most of his material for people who are not. . . . In Dunne's birding world, shared interest is the only coin of the realm, and even the rank novice is greeted with respect."

—from the foreword by Kenn Kaufman

More Tales of a Low-Rent Birder brings together twenty-five recent essays that originally appeared in major birding publications. In these pieces, Pete Dunne ranges from wildly humorous to sadly elegiac, as he describes everything from the "field plumage" of the dedicated birder to the lingering death of an accidentally injured golden plover. Running like a thread through all the essays is Dunne's love and respect for the birds he watches, his concern over human threats to their survival, and his tolerance, even affection, for the human "odd birds" that birding attracts. Truly, these essays offer something for everyone interested in birds and the natural habitats our species share.

To Pete Dunne it is all these things.... Although he can match his extremely sharp eyes and trained ears with anyone... he never loses his sense of fun.... Read what he has to say about birds and the birders who pursue them with such passion."

Tales of a Low-Rent Birder is a collection of nineteen essays and sketches written between 1977 and 1985. It was originally published in 1986.

                                3 out of 5 stars Being a Birder.......2002-03-11

Birders are an odd, if endearing lot, and nowhere is this more apparent (and freely admitted) than in Pete Dunne's Tales of a Low-rent Birder. Since my interest in birding is only casual, the stories that took birding propensities to extremes, such as the hypothetical SVAT team (think SWAT for birds) composed of 4 quirky members who can't agree on anything and spend their lives tracking down bird sightings, and The Legend of Jesse Mew, a play on the guru followed by his adoring disciples thing, were a bit much for me. However, his story of finding, following and eventually pulling on a kit string that wound its way across a bird sanctuary (and thereby causing the entire bird population to take wing when the kite rose into the air) was amusing, as was his story of birding with Roger Tory Peterson. I also enjoyed his attempt to see the world through a peregrine falcon's eyes in "Peregrine Going South for the First Time," and his brief profiles of 4 birders who, though very different people, all share the ability to "see" as told in "A Gift of Vision."

However, none of these stories really hit home for me, meaning I didn't find myself reading eagerly with great interest (as I did with Kingbird Highway by Kenn Kaufman, or The Rites of Autumn by Dano O'Brien), or wishing for more once a story ended. In fact I kept putting the book aside with a feeling of vague dissatisfaction. Avid birders may have another story to tell, but for me this book was a disappointment.

An original writing style and a true love of birds and birdwatching make this one a standout. With sections on eagles, hawks, bluebills and even birdwatchers themselves, this one is a delight for the fellow birdlover.
