    Book Description

“THE MEN WHO SACRIFICED FOR THEIR COUNTRY ARE RIGHTFULLY HERALDED . . . This is an honest book–one well worth reading. . . . Stanton has laid his claim to the historian’s ranks by providing his reader with well-documented, interpretive assessments.”
    –Parameters

The Vietnam War remains deep in the nation’s consciousness. It is vital that we know exactly what happened there–and who made it happen. This book provides a complete account of American Army ground combat forces–who they were, how they got to the battlefield, and what they did there. Year by year, battlefield by battlefield, the narrative follows the war in extraordinary, gripping detail. Over the course of the decade, the changes in fighting and in the combat troops themselves are described and documented. The Rise and Fall of an American Army represents the first total battlefield history of Army ground forces in the Vietnam War, containing much previously unreleased archival material. It re-creates the feel of battle with dramatic precision.

“Stanton’s writing . . . gives the reader a terrifying graphic description of combat in the many mini-environments of Vietnam.”
    –The New York Times

    “[A] MOVING, IMPORTANT BOOK.”

    5 out of 5 stars I was there.......2005-06-19

Having lived through the time covered in the book, as either a member of the Army or an "Army Brat", this is the truth. My copy has notes for my kids on what it was like to see this happening. This book is honest, truthful and pulls no punches. This is a "must read" if you wish to understand these times.

4 out of 5 stars It has some good points.......2005-04-30

There is a large cloud over this author because of his conduct. But none the less, I enjoyed this book and think its worth the effort to keep an eye & mind open and read the book.

    5 out of 5 stars ThankYouVietnamVets.......2004-07-29

Although an excellent read, one would have to reconsider rating this book in light of revelations of Shelby Stanton's fakery documented in "Stolen Valor," B.G. Burkett and Glenna Whitley. THE EVIDENCE SEEMS TO SHOW THAT STANTON SNATCHED GOVERNMENT DOCUMENTS DISHONESTLY.

This begs important questions: if documents for this book were hoarded, taken away, not given notification to proper authorities - what else in the book is not true. The author lied about his war record and lied to Col. Harry Summers. Is it the right thing to do to continue to promote Stanton.

The angry reply by Stanton to Burkett and Whitley in the customer review section was (a another reviewer astutely pointed out) very unlike the dry, matter-of-fact style of Stanton. Was it really Stanton's reply?

Here is my review based on not having read Stolen Valor.

This book excels for several reasons. It digs deeper than
the hackneyed, scripted version of the war that is handed
down by the elite media. It includes military achievements
ignored by the anti-war, pro-communist crowd. The student
will love the inclusion of excellent maps, and inclusion
of the rich valorous history of various divisions and outfits
that have served the USA up to and including Vietnam.
The student will also love how code-named military operations are
cross-referenced with designated war zones on maps. Thank
you Capt. Stanton and all vets for your brave service in fighting a system of communism as evil as nazism.

            5 out of 5 stars A valuable history.......2005-10-16

The Vietnam War is probably the most maligned, misunderstood, misrepresented, and misreported conflict in military history. Readers who wish to clear their minds of the perpetual cacophony of nonsense surrounding it must turn to a qualified source. Shelby Stanton -- military historian and decorated veteran, Infantry Officer, Ranger, Airborne, and Special Forces in Vietnam, is a qualified source.

Stanton turns his untinted glasses to the conflict in a very scholarly, soldierly manner. The history is primarily engagement-oriented, but weaves these engagements into a backdrop of policy, system-wide challenges, political fiascos, and cultural difficulties.

Stanton covers every major engagement during the war with as much precision as possible for a single volume. He meticulously lists regiments, battalions, companies, squads, etc. before he commences a vivid description of combat. Particularly critical actions by individuals are also mentioned.

The author does not whitewash low points in military conduct. He discusses the poorly-led Americal division, members of which were responsible for My Lai. Substance abuse by soldiers (particularly toward the latter end of the conflict), demoralization and insubordination prior to demobilization and cover-ups in the chain-of-command all receive treatment.

However, Stanton places these problems in perspective and is, above all, fair to the men who served. The simple fact is that the vast, overwhelming majority of troops served honorably, steadfastly and often heroically. In almost no circumstance where the NVA/VC able to hold captured targets for any length of time, and only rarely were they able to overwhelm an entire position. Casualties experienced by the NVA, as best as can be ascertained, outnumbered ours dramatically (a figure given is 500,000 NVA/VC, by an NVA general to journalist Oriana Fallaci). In fact, the use of casualties as a benchmark for successful engagements was one of the problems that (Stanton points out) led to My Lai. Other benchmarks were hard to come by, however, given the "Total War" strategy that deemphasized holding strategic terrain.

Ultimately, the failure to achieve policy objectives in Vietnam rested with political decisions and lack of American will. From a tactical perspective, US Forces on the whole performed admirably -- repulsing Tet and Mini-Tet, winning the "Big Battles" of 1967, and so on.

Rise and Fall is well-written and manages to engage the reader despite the precision. It contains numerous maps by the author as well as illuminating photographs from his collection.

A history that will stand the test of time.

            4 out of 5 stars Indispensable .......2004-08-16

This is a greeat book, though not a perfect one - but certainly a welcome and necessary addition to any Vietnam era reader. Stanton is not really concerned with politics of strategy, only the performance of the Army and Marines in combat in Vietnam and, more unusually, how the Regular Army reacted to the war. Densely written and without enough maps, it certainly is a bit difficult to read, but it is worth it. He covers all of the major operations and battles of the war, including the ones usually ignored by historians. Stanton unfortunately has a strong bias against the ARVN and doesn't bother to conceal it.

                      4 out of 5 stars Too much.......2006-11-04

It's probably my own fault but this book is a bit over my head. I just wanted a book to identify birds I might see in my area of NH or New England and this book has lots of birds I am sure I will never come close to seeing! If you are a serious birder and are on the lookout for rare birds stopping by during migration you would like this book, but many of them don't live in New England at all. I guess thats why the title has the word "of" underlined. Now I know. Descriptions are thorough and each bird gets it's own entire page full of information and the birds description sometimes helps more than the picture as some of the pictures are just not that good. There is a little box on each page that lists "similar birds" which helps in identification, but I just wish the pictures were more clear.

5 out of 5 stars flawless guide to New England's feathered friends.......2003-08-08

There are approximately 920 species of birds known to visit North America, and 302 of them are documented visitors to New England. All 302 are covered here, as well as 179 occasional species. This compact yet comprehensive book begins with 28 pages of introduction, including instructions on using the book, identifying birds and field technique.

Profiles are one page per species, and the quantity and quality of the information on each page is spectacular. Each entry contains the family and species name; the length, wingspan and weight of a typical specimen; plumage, habitat and migration information; and descriptive paragraphs about the species' song, behavior, breeding, nesting, population and conservation as well as a distribution map (with migratory information); and pictorial depictions of the species' flight pattern and nest identification. Also included is a scaled silhouette and at least one color photograph. (More pictures are included if the male/female/adolescents/seasonal plumage differ in appearance.) There are blank spaces to note the date, time and location of a sighting. After these 302 entries, smaller entries describe each of 179 bird species that are considered vagrant or casual visitors to the region, and contain the name, a color picture, a distribution map and the average length of that specimen. Entries are organized taxonomically, beginning with birds that do NOT perch and sing, and continuing with those that DO. The book concludes with a glossary (though nowhere does it define 'altricial' -- meaning born helpless, a word used frequently in the entries), a good index, and acknowledgments, including picture credits.

I'm an old reference librarian, and I have a shelf full of flawed naturalist guides, so I'm not easily impressed -- but this guide is spectacular. If you have any interest in the birds of New England, this should be the first guide you get.

4 out of 5 stars focused record of bird-sightings.......1999-06-21

Not a field guide, this is a systematic COMPLETE record of bird-sightings in Massachusetts. It is pretty dry, but has information that can interest even a casual bird-watcher (when were Ethiopian Cattle Egrets first recognized in the U.S.?) Since it shows maps of every breeding pair seen of a given species, it can answer pretty definitively whether you are seeing a Black- Chinned Hummingbird or not.

                            Book Description

This book is a Who's Who of Cape and Island nature writers. A Guide to Nature on Cape Cod and the Islands explores the behavior and life cycles of the plant and animal species that are common to each, and describes what to look for and where to find it. Written by some of New England's foremost naturalists and scientists, each chapter covers one type of wildlife family and is accompanied by an informative question and answer section. Included are essays by, among others, John Hay on the secrets of nature, Robert Finch on woodlands, Richard LeBlond on wetlands, John Portnoy on ponds, Robert Barlow on the peculiarities of Cape and Islands weather, the late Donald Zinn on the power of the sea, and the late Erma Fisk on birds of the region.

An indispensable handbook for everyone in the family, A Guide to Nature on Cape Cod and the Islands provides a greater understanding of the natural world around us.

                                  Book Description

Birding Western Massachusetts features over 26 great birding locations in Western Massachusetts. Every site has been chosen either for diversity and volume of bird life, or for its unique and rare birds. All sites are easily accessible and open to the public year-round. Whether you are an avid birder looking for specific birds, or a casual nature enthusiast with an interest in seeing different kinds of birds, this guide will provide you with everything you need to make every birding experience a success.

Author Robert tougias presents a "habitat" approach to birding, showing how to use the awareness of habitat to find birds. With mountains, meadows, rivers, and reservoirs, a wide variety of habitats exists in western Massachusetts--from sub-alpine conditions to pitch pine scrubland. Within each habitat, a unique set of birds can be found. And what a variety! There are over 100 different birds nesting in western Massachusetts, and as many as 300 different birds are recorded annually through the seasons. Few people realize the ideal situation of such a large variety of birds, together with a large number of easily accessible places in which to view them. It is a winning combination for every birder at every level to enjoy. This guide allows you to seize this opportunity in an easy, userfriendly way.

Birding Western Massachusetts is written in a readable style that motivates the reader and helps ensure a productive birding day afield. It describes precise locations and seasons where rare and abundant species may be found. By carefully selecting the sites, you have the opportunity to see everything from eagles to songbirds to rare owls, shorebirds, and waterfowl. Also revealed are the best sites and times for viewing the numerous southern and northern species that migrate regularly through this region. The challenge of finding and identifying birds is made easier with trail maps, site directions, illustrations (by the author), information on bird identification and birding techniques, as well as the unique Quick Locator Reference, enabling you to quickly find the best sites for any bird. This guide will soon make better birders out of each reader.
