Book Description
A book for parents of children with mental retardation, whether or not they have a diagnosed syndrome or condition. It provides a complete introduction to a child's medical, therapeutic, and educational needs and covers topics such as family adjustment, daily care, child development, early intervention, special education, and legal rights. A reading list, a glossary of important terms, and a national listing of disability organizations make this a complete handbook.

A practical and hopeful book for parents.......2005-03-23
This book is different. It's not the technical, dry or depressing book.
The writing is practical, straightforward and hopeful. It is the best book on special needs/mental retardation I've read so far. I wish I'd read this one first.
This book adresses the initial concerns, testing, the roles of the therapists and even the IEP. The book ends with practical parenting advice and tips. Many of the comments from parents throughout the book hit home and were a breath of fresh air.
This book belongs in the library of a special needs/m.r. parent-and probably their extended family too.
Help for Parents of Children with Mental Retardation.......2000-01-10
Our Early Intervention Coordinator gave this book to me the week after our daughter was diagnosed with MR. This book is an excellent first resource for parents. It is very readable and easy to understand. You can read only the areas you are concerned about or cover to cover. In attempting to be a parent's guide, they include quotes from parents of children with MR through each section. I found this so helpful that one night I found myself up until 1AM just going through the book and reading what "other parents" had to say. Chapters cover diagnosis, the evaluation process, daily living, legal rights and advocacy.
After reading this book, I found that I was more informed and better able to ask the right questions. It also helped me to understand what I was feeling about the diagnosis. There is even a description of types of MR and causes, etc. I would recommend it as a first resource for any parent who learns their child has MR.

Book Brief.......2007-04-02
The book is formatted very well. It has helped me approach my child in a new manner with excellent results. Some of the tasks we take for granted are broken into smaller steps that can be overlooked. This book helps you identify missing steps and provides multiple methods of application. It isn't a "one size fits all" approach. It gives good ideas for praise and correction if consistently followed.
The page layouts are easy to read and the cartoons are cute. Everything addressed in this book has samples to serve as a guide for you. The appendices has more ideas for aiding with independence. Overall, the application of this book, used in a routine, is great for any age and any skill level.

Book Description
An essential tool for parents, seasoned teachers, and other individuals involved in the life of somebody who happens to have mental retardation, this book provides readers with scores of useful resources, including websites, professional organizations, and support groups.
Book Description
Though the 'Wehrmachtsgefolge' (Armed Forces Auxiliaries) were generally inferior to their armed forces equivalents, their contribution to the German war-effort was far from negligible. Auxiliaries including the NSKK, Transportkorps Speer, Reichsarbeitsdienst and Organization Todt supported the Wehrmacht in their duties. In 1944, the strength of these organizations peaked at 3,800,000-40% of the size of the armed forces. As they became increasingly aware of their importance, the Auxiliaries introduced uniform and insignia modifications which made them virtually indistinguishable from their comrades in the armed forces. This book examines the organization, uniforms and history of the various Wehrmacht auxiliary forces.
Book Description
LeShaun argues that parapsychology has failed to consider the real insights offered by 20th-century science into the nature of reality. He demonstrates with elegance that humans no longer live in a single-track universe, but in a multi-track one. What is impossible and paranormal on one track is perfectly possible on another. This book presents new ways of studying telepathy, clairvoyance, and precognition.
Customer Reviews:
Challenges parapsychological thinking and offers new insight.......2005-01-09
The World Of The Paranormal: The Next Frontier challenges current parapsychological thinking and offers new insights in the study of telepathy, clairvoyance, precognition, psychic healing, and other psychic phenomena. Arguing that the crucial key lies in the discoveries twentieth-century science has made concerning the nature of reality, and the realm of consciousness, The World Of The Paranormal does not shy from advanced philosophical considerations in its quest to better understand the psychic realm. Psychologist, educator, and author Lawrence LeShan skillfully presents complex theoretical concepts in the clearest possible language, in this welcome contribution to new age studies shelves.

How science is really done.......2000-07-26
This is the best book that I have read on how discoveries are really made. Reading the book is an adventure in itself and it touches on every aspect of the scientific process: theoretic, experimental, aesthetic, sociological, political, geographic, &c.
Very inspiring and highly recommended to potential mavericks.
One of the best books on science I have read........1999-07-18
Discovering is a book about how discoveries are made in science. It is one of the most liberating books any scientist in any field can read. It is also highly creative in its format where the story of Discovering unfolds through the work of six characters -- not all of them scientists.
A really good read for all, and a must read for anyone serious about studying science or making discoveries. This includes social scientists as well as physical scientists.

Product Description
Researchers in areas such as artificial intelligence, formal and computational linguistics, biomedical informatics, conceptual modeling, knowledge engineering and information retrieval have come to realize that a solid foundation for their research calls for serious work in ontology, understood as a general theory of the types of entities and relations that make up their respective domains of inquiry. In all these areas, attention is now being focused on the content of information rather than on just the formats and languages used to represent information. The clearest example of this development is provided by the many initiatives growing up around the project of the Semantic Web. And, as the need for integrating research in these different fields arises, so does the realization that strong principles for building well-founded ontologies might provide significant advantages over ad hoc, case-based solutions. The tools of formal ontology address precisely these needs, but a real effort is required in order to apply such philosophical tools to the domain of information systems. Reciprocally, research in the information sciences raises specific ontological questions which call for further philosophical investigations. The purpose of FOIS is to provide a forum for genuine interdisciplinary exchange in the spirit of a unified effort towards solving the problems of ontology, with an eye to both theoretical issues and concrete applications. This book contains a wide range of areas, all of which are important to the development of formal ontologies.

AN EXCELLENT REFERENCE TO U.S. ARMY MANNERS, 19th CENTURY.......2007-04-23
Using Captain King's fictional writings of the late 19th and early 20th century, the author has gleaned an almost complete retelling of the life and manners of the Indian Fighting army of the plains. Captain, later General, King through his service years wrote through fiction to list the non-fictional rules of behavior that he and his brother officers had to adhere. Not to do so made one not an officer and gentleman, and the career of that man soon came to an abrupt end.
Though this book has very long chapters and has the feel of a slow read, it is every bit worth the time expended with it. Anyone remotely interested in what went on inside those western posts and encampments, needs to read this book. I am very surprise mine is the only review listed here. I bought this book in hardcover back when originally published and after a rereading, decided to at the least give it some review.
And the best test of Charles King's novels was that the cadets at West Point who read these books, when later seeing service at western posts, knew exactly what to expect and fit in correctly. Their service proved the truth and reliability of these writings of General King. Now you too can benefit from an armchair reading of these rules of conduct and behavior from the military past.

This Mighty Scourge: Perspectives on the Civil War

Book Description
Where did American literature start? The familiar story of Emerson and Thoreau has them setting up shop in Concord, Massachusetts, and determining the course of American writing. West of Emerson overhauls this story of origins as it shifts the context for these literary giants from the civilized East to the wide-open spaces of the Louisiana Purchase. Kris Fresonke tracks down the texts by explorers of the far West that informed Nature, Emerson's most famous essay, and proceeds to uncover the parodic Western politics at play in classic New England works of Romanticism. Westerns, this book shows, helped create "Easterns."
West of Emerson roughs up genteel literary history: Fresonke argues for a fresh mix of American literature, one based on the far reaches of American territory and American literary endeavor. Reading into the record the unexplored writings of Lewis and Clark, Zebulon Pike, Stephen Long, and William Emory, Fresonke forges surprising connections between the American West and the American visions emanating from the neighborhood of Walden Pond. These connections open a new view of the politics--and, by way of the notion of "design," the theological lineage--of manifest destiny. Finally, Fresonke's book shows how the cast of the American canon, no less than the direction of American politics, came to depend on what design one placed on the continent.
Customer Reviews:
The Design; At Last.......2002-12-29
Ms. Fresonke opens up a whole new world for anyone who has ever read or teached on the writings of early American authors. A great new look at American literature without the classic restrictions laid down by stodgy traditionalists who ever look upon the limited outpourings of Emerson, Thoreau, etal, as the only ports of interest available to the reader. One can almost sense the spirit of adventure that must have prevailed over Lewis and Clark, Pike, etal., in reading of their contributions to American Lit., so nicely related here. Well done.

Book Description
Intelligent Systems can be defined as systems whose design, mainly based on computational techniques, is supported, in some parts, by operations and processing skills inspired by human reasoning and behaviour. Intelligent Systems must typically operate in a scenario in which non-linearities are the rule and not as a disturbing effect to be corrected. Finally, Intelligent Systems also have to incorporate advanced sensory technology in order to simplify man-machine interactions. Several algorithms are currently the ordinary tools of Intelligent Systems. This book contains a selection of contributions regarding Intelligent Systems by experts in diverse fields. Topics discussed in the book are: Applications of Intelligent Systems in Modelling and Prediction of Environmental Changes, Cellular Neural Networks for NonLinear Filtering, NNs for Signal Processing, Image Processing, Transportation Intelligent Systems, Intelligent Techniques in Power Electronics, Applications in Medicine and Surgery, Hardware Implementation and Learning of NNs.

Birds of Kauai.......2007-10-17
Didn't realize that the book was without color; I was disappointed. The best book for the purpose of identifying Hawaiian birds is Hawaiian Audubon Society's publication on the subject.
Birds of Kaua'i.......2007-08-24
Very informative, but color pictures would have made it better. It's difficult to match a black and white picture with a colorful bird.
Birds of Kaua'i.......2007-08-06
I assumed the pictures would be in color, my mistake. The black and white pictures of the birds are difficult to see (way too dark)to be able to identify them.
Interesting text, excellent photographs.......1999-07-11
Jim Denny's excellent photographs complement his excellent text. The book is neither a field guide (for that, use Douglas Pratt's Field Guide to the Birds of Hawai'i and the Tropical Pacific) nor is it a site guide (use Pratt or Sohren for that), but something else: an accurate and fascinating review of the birds of the island and how they fit into the marvelous land. Bits of interesting history are interwoven with the descriptions, and Denny's relation of the tragedy of the lost birds of Kaua'i can make you weep. I highly recommend this book to anyone who has or will look for birds on this remarkable island. My one complaint is that the paintings Denny chose to illustrate those birds he could not photograph are not the most accurate depictions available, though they are of historical interest.
An absolute "must" for every bird lover!.......1999-06-30
This book is essential for anyone planning to visit this beautiful island, and if you have no plans to go there... look through this wonderful guide, and you may change your mind! The glossy pages are filled with photos of the most illusive and rare birds of Kaua'I. These colorful creatures are found nowhere else on earth. They are photographed in their native surroundings, which are as unique and bold as the birds themselves. Jim Denny did a wonderful job describing each species in detail. Wonderful photos, great reading! I highly recommend this book for lovers of birds, and lovers of beauty. Thumbs up!
