Customer Reviews:
Car Living My Way.......2004-12-25
I have a history of living in cars several times (less than a month each time) well before this book was written. I see the book as a good way to consider the idea, if time is available to consider it. The whole thing is based on the actual experiences of car living people, organized by a writer to give it coherence. Organization counts here.
AJ Heim starts by considering the reasons people live in cars (or trucks, vans, etc.) and "mental preparation" for doing so. This is important for people who are considering car living as one choice among others. Part I continues with specifics of packing, parking, cleanliness and other important topics, winding up with a chapter on Feng Shui as related to car living. Part II contains the stories. The stories matter to me because (a) they show how the "parts" in Part I make "whole" stories of people and (b) they give the reader a chance to explore attitudes that work for living in cars.
In short, the combination of AJ Heim's writing skill with the actual experiences of car living people makes a useful and interesting book.

Book Description
Although Ruby seemed to just appear out of thin air on the steps of the courthouse on the first day of summer in 1944, no one in Way Down Deep, West Virginia, ever worried too much about where the toddler came from. They figured that if Ruby’s people were dumb enough to lose something as valuable as a child, then that was their problem. So even though Ruby can’t help but wonder where she came from, she has led a joyful and carefree life in Way Down Deep, loved and watched over by Miss Arbutus – proprietor of The Roost, the local boardinghouse – the residents of The Roost, and the rest of the town. But when Ruby is twelve, a new family moves to Way Down Deep, and they inadvertently provide enough clues about Ruby’s past that she is able to find her own people. Ruby travels from Way Down Deep to the top of Yonder Mountain to learn who she really is – only to find that she is bound to Way Down Deep by something even stronger than family ties: love.
With a touch of fairy-tale magic and a lot of heart, Ruth White explores just what it is that makes a place truly home.
Customer Reviews:
A fine story of bonds and community connections evolves........2007-07-10
Ruth White's WAY DOWN DEEP tells of a toddler found abandoned in a small town. Miss Arbutus takes her in and she leads a good life - but when Ruby is twelve a new family arrives in town with news of her past - and to learn more she must travel far from her newfound home. Is it worth it? A fine story of bonds and community connections evolves.
Way Down Deep.......2007-04-19
Way Down Deep is a small town that is cradled between hills in the Appalachian Mountains. This special town "did not do things by the book". In 1944 on the first day of summer, a small redheaded girl is found abandoned in front of Way Down Deep's courthouse "she was in her petticoat, just sitting there on that bench where the old-timers like to hang out and swap lies" A toddler she can only respond that "woo-bee" is her name so the town adopts Ruby informally, " if Ruby's people were dumb enough to lose something as valuable as a child, then finders keepers, losers weepers". The sheriff whose "heart was way too soft and his mind too fuzzy for sheriffing" looks the other way rather than try to locate any relatives when Miss Arbutus who runs the rambling three-story boardinghouse called The Roost volunteers to raise the little girl until "her people" are found. Ruby, now eleven, thrives on the love extended to her by the townspeople. The setting is well established: A charming little map shows: Busy Street and Ward Street where there are businesses like Bevins's BarberShop, Pure Gas Station whose owner also runs the Boxcart Grill and the medical office of Mr. and Mrs. Doctor, one is a dentist, the other is a doctor.
The cast of delightful characters include: a man who arrives with a goat which he offers Miss Arbutus in exchange for lodging and food; this goat loves to stand on a Studebaker to view his new town, Ruby's classmate Reese who loves to sing but sings off-key "In his own mind he was the second coming of Hank Williams, but to everybody else he was as off-key as a hillbilly slung up drunk on moonshine", Mrs. Thornton Elkins a "cultured lady" whose husband died in their first year of marriage so she moves into the Roost to recuperate for a few weeks, then a few months, then a few years; when she runs out of money, donations of food items and bolts of dress material are left for her so she could wear "simple but stylish dresses". One day an inept bank robber who is easily confounded, scared of real guns and so carries a plastic gun, cries when he tries and fails to hold up the town bank successfully. When it turns out he arrived in town on a bus and plans to leave on a bus, the townspeople are too polite to suggest to him a getaway on a bus was not the best idea. Nevertheless, the townspeople "adopt" his family since he is down on his luck. When Ruby is eleven years old, an uncle shows up to reclaim her; the interior motive proves to be that she is required to take care of a constantly angry and bitter grandmother. Ruby ingeniously starts telling her stories about the nurturing town where she grew up. Later when Ruby insists on returning to Way Down Deep, the grandmother wants to move there too where she might finally have some friends. This is a charming and uplifting story of a community that treasures its children (the adults put on a Kid's Day to celebrate all of them) and offers help to those in need. Yes, the residents are nosey and news travels fast, yet who would not want to live in this unique town where the residents are respectful of each other's idiosyncrasies and extend their love and care to residents and strangers alike. This is a powerful story of redemption and acceptance that is humorous and filled with interesting characters.

Book Description
Operation Epsom, launched on June 29th, was General Bernard Montgomery's third attempt to take the city of Caen, which had been a key D-Day objective. The basic aim of Epsom was to sweep round to the west and south of Caen and reach the main Caen-Falaise road. This would almost encircle the German defenders around Caen, particularly those at the Carpiquet aerodrome who were preventing any further progress on Monty's left flank. The attack deployed VIII Corps, commanded by Lieutenant-General Richard O'Connor and consisting of 11th and Guards Armoured Divisions, 15th (Scottish) Division and 6th Independent Armoured Brigade, to force crossings over the Odon and Orne rivers and capture the vital Hill 112. Despite Monty's claims after the war that his intention was to fix', or hold, the enemy armor in the east while the Americans swept round from the west, Epsom was clearly designed for the British to achieve the decisive breakthrough in Normandy. An advance of six miles was made and Hill 112 was briefly captured. A company of 2nd Battalion, The Argyll & Sutherland Highlanders rushed a stone bridge at Tourmeauville, capturing it intact. For much of Epsom this bridge was the only crossing point over the Odon, and thus a considerable bottleneck. The threat of counter-attacks from the newly-arrived II SS Panzer Corps persuaded the British to withdraw from the east bank of the Odon. Hill 112 and Caen remained in German hands.

My uncle in WW2 Normandy June-August, 1944....research.........2006-11-10
I am attempting to find out about my uncle's involvement in WW2 in Normandy. I intend to explore the battlefield in 2007. Had to try and piece it all together by reading several books in this series. Each one provided more information including Operation Epsom. Tracing the battles; dates; movement on the maps; etc. was fascinating. This particular battle - Epsom - was just one part of the whole operation during the months of June, July and August, 1944. Getting specific information about an individual is very difficult - but got a good overall feel for the time and place from this book, et al. These young men were in some of the bloodiest fighting of WW2 when the allies were getting a toehold in Normandy and losses were very heavy. No wonder many of them (all??) were never the same again.....their souls were seared by their experiences. NOW, I begin to understand a little!

Book Description
Operation EPSOM was General Montgomery's third attempt to take the City of Caen, which had been a key British D-Day objective. Delayed by a storm, the attack, designed to envelop Caen from the west, eventually began at the end of June 1944. The Territorial Army battalions of 15th Scottish Division spearheaded the attacks through the well developed positions of 12th Hitlerjugend SS Panzer Division. It was slow going and when tanks of the 11th Armoured Division dashed to the Odon Bridges they ran into the concentrated fire of dug-in panzers. However, the following day the Argyle and Sutherland Highlanders slipped through the German defenses and seized a vital bridge. Armor poured across but, rather than pushing home their advantage, the British prepared to beat off a powerful counterattack from II SS Panzer Corps.
Customer Reviews:
An Excellent Study of a Corps Attack.......2003-09-13
Operation Epsom, by veteran Battleground Europe author Tim Saunders, is the first in five new volumes covering the British attempts to break out of the Normandy beachhead in 1944. Given the far greater attention given to D-Day itself and the American breakout in Operation Cobra, these volumes help to fill in a number of details about the relatively neglected British operations in Normandy. Saunders volume on Epsom, a British offensive that occurred during 26-30 June 1944, is as well written as his previous volumes for the series. Indeed, Operation Epsom is a solid case history of a typical British corps-size attack in 1944.
Saunders does a superb job in his introductory chapter sketching the background to the battle, including the arrival of the British VIII Corps and the German SS Hitler Jugend division and the genesis of the plan to envelop the city of Caen from the west. The author uses three 1:50,000 scale maps to depict the four phases of Epsom and its objectives, as well as German dispositions. With these maps and a tight narrative, Saunders takes the reader by the hand in outlining what Operation Epsom was intended to achieve and conditions on the ground. The author then uses five narrative chapters, each detailing one day in the operation. A brief epilogue follows, as well as notes on touring the battlefield, a table of ranks and a very detailed British order of battle. Unfortunately, the author does not provide a German order of battle or a bibliography. The photographs throughout the volume are excellent and most have not been published in other works.
For Operation Epsom, the British massed the three divisions of VIII Corps (11th Armored, 15th Scottish and 43rd Wessex) under the desert veteran General O'Connor against the thinly spread SS Hitler Jugend division. With over 700 artillery pieces firing in support, complete control of the air and a 3-1 advantage in armor, the British offensive should easily have smashed through the over-stretched German lines. However, the British had not anticipated German resiliency or adaptability. Reading Saunders' narrative, it is apparent that the British conducted very little pre-battle reconnaissance and smugly believed that the German line was a mere crust defense. While the initial infantry attack succeeded on the morning of 26 June, it took much longer than anticipated to clear out the handful of front-line German infantry companies. Consequently, the commitment of British armor was delayed and when it did occur, it ran smack into the German armor reserve (which included six Tiger tanks). Rather quickly, the British found themselves in an attritional battle that threatened to derail all their plans.
However, the Germans made mistakes, too. On the second day of the offensive, a small British armor-infantry force found a small gap in the newly formed German line and boldly moved forward to seize a key bridge over the Odon River. For reasons not entirely clear, the Germans dithered at this key moment - apparently due to the fog of war - allowing the British to build up a division-size force on the Odon bridgehead. Indeed, the only substantial German reaction was an amateurish attack by unsupported armor into one of the British-held towns; the British infantry had a field day, destroying five of the formidable Panther tanks at close range. On the third day of the offensive, the British got another lucky break when they were able to seize the vital Hill 112 that overlooked Caen; the Germans had failed to garrison this key piece of terrain.
Unfortunately for the British, the Germans began to recover from their string of mistakes and were able to mass the 2nd SS Panzer Corps for a major counterattack. Furthermore, the British offensive had formed a long, but narrow salient into the German lines; the interior of the salient was under constant German artillery fire and the road network was in a mess. Saunders makes clear that the decisive factor that saved the British ground forces was their superb artillery, which broke up most of the German armored counterattacks. Although the German counteroffensive - designed to cut off the British salient and annihilate VIII Corps - failed, it did force the British to end the offensive and switch to the defense. Much of the hard-won terrain, like Hill 112, was abandoned in order to shorten the line.
Operation Epsom cost both sides heavily, although Saunders is vague about losses. The British had entered the battle with a number of deficiencies, particularly in armor-infantry cooperation and close air support, but these improved due to lessons learned in Epsom. If Saunders' account - which is an excellent corps-level study - teaches anything, it is that opportunities on the battlefield are fleeting and that agility and flexibility are key virtues for commanders.

Book Description
Before Operation Epsom in late June 1944 there remained the chance that a German counter-stroke might seriously threaten the bridgehead. After Epsom, the Allies retained the strategic initiative through to the liberation of France and Belgium. This was a battle in which highly trained but largely inexperienced British 'follow-up' divisions, newly arrived in Normandy, confronted some of the best equipped, best led and battle-hardened formations of the Third Reich. Beginning with a set-piece British assault on the German lines in dense terrain, the battle developed into swirling armored action on the open slopes of Hills 112 and 113, before the British turned to grimly defending their gains in the face of concentric attacks by two full SS-Panzer Korps. This entirely new study brings together previously unseen evidence to present an important Normandy battle in very great detail. The unfolding action is illustrated using aerial photography of the battlefield and period Army maps.
Customer Reviews:
An excellent book on Operation Epsom!.......2007-10-06
Surprising enough not many books are written on Operation Epsom, and this one is certainly one of the most informative. Excellent maps, interesting witness accounts, thorough background information, some small errors, but minor and not annoying, if you want to learn something about how it was, read this book. AND best of all, superb aerial pictures, which provide the reader with great insight about what went on, and the tactics used. I'm amazed to be the first reviewer of this excellent book. Mr. Daglish is one of the best authors on Normandy, and I hope to see many more books like this from this author. He knows the subject well, and makes you feel like being there. Well done!

Book Description
Russians are suppressing the Chechen; Ibo nationalism may yet tear Nigeria apart. With the end of the Cold War, any of the world's stateless peoples could be in tomorrow's headlines. This book provides an essential guide to the stateless nations suppressed or ignored during the Cold War. In more than 200 national surveys, the volume highlights the historical, political, social, economic, and diplomatic evolution of many of the currently emerging nations without states. Including nations from all continents--from the Chechen in Eastern Europe, to the Ibo in Africa, and the Quebeckers in North America--the book addresses the current nationalist resurgence by focusing on the most basic element of any nationalism, the nation itself. The book provides the only source of concise information on stateless nations. Each entry includes the nation's name and alternative names, population statistics, information on major languages and religions, geographical information, independence declarations, information on the national flag, a brief sketch of the primary national group or groups, and a profile of the nation's history and national development to the present. A chronological appendix of declarations of independence helps to set the waves of nationalism in an historical context. A second appendix provides a geographic listing, by region and nation, of national organizations.

The same text describes 3 of Minahan's books I own, as the text describing these nations given as examples is a copy-paste with very minor differences in all the books: Nations without States: A Historical Dictionary of Contemporary National Movements, One Europe, Many Nations: A Historical Dictionary of European National Groups and Encyclopedia of the Stateless Nations: Ethnic and National Groups Around the World. Guess I have not made much bigger stupidities in my life than to ordering all of these books at the same time.
Unfortunately, this book is a disaster. It is full of mistakes, especially about the given number of peoples, but it has historical or linguistic mistakes as well. For example, I'll give just a few data about Livonians:
Population: Minahan (M.) gives 100 000 (!), while the actual number is only a few hundreds at present. Though, historically Livonians once inhabited most part of today's Latvian coastline, the assimilation took part mostly centuries ago, so that people do not identify themselves as Livonians.
Historical Livonian province was only in its southwestern part ethnically Livonian, and the data M. gives about the Livonians in Estonia, is totaaly mistaken. The so-called Livonian cultural center of Massiaru town in Estonia has nothing to do with Livonians, and, after all, is only a smaal village.
While Livonians are a really tiny nation, the number is incorrect about some not so small nations as well, including in cases when the census data is available even by Internet. Some examples:
Ingrians: by M. 90 000 in Russia, 20 000 in Estonia and 250 000 in Finland. Actually, the total number was 67 813 at 1989 in Soviet Union, and all the Ingrians in Finland migrated there after the S.U. collapsed.
Karels: by M. 26% of the people of Karelian Republic in Russia, actually about 10%.
Mordvins: 1,848 millions by M., actually less than 1,1 millions.
And, one example from central Europe - Sorbs: by M. 543 000, including 40 000 in Poland; actually, about 60 000, as well as all in Germany.
So, after the data what can easily be controlled, how can you trust the data what is harder to check?
As a conclusion - I cannot find any more misleading so-called scientific book.

Book Description
Every epoch bewilders those who live through it, but for Americans, the postwar era has been a time of breathtaking change and transition. With these comprehensive and engaging essays, this volume encourages readers to form a new perspective on a recent and highly debated period of American history.
Contributors to this volume were chosen for their ability to conceive of topics in unconventional and provocative ways. Renowned scholars specializing in economics, foreign affairs, political science, and social and cultural history collectively reexamine the history of America since the end of World War II. Rather than divide this period into such traditional categories as "women," "television," and "politics," contributors take a cross-topical approach that emphasizes the interconnectedness of American life and society.
Beginning with an analysis of cultural themes and ending with a discussion of evolving and expanding political and corporate institutions, these essays address changes in America's response to the outside world; the merging of psychological states and social patterns in memorial culture, scandal culture, and consumer culture; the intersection of social practices and governmental policies; the effect of technological change on society and politics; and the intersection of changing belief systems and technological development, among other issues.
Many had feared that Orwellian institutions would crush the individual in the postwar era, but a major theme of this book is the persistence of individuality and diversity. Trends toward institutional bigness and standardization have coexisted with and sometimes have given rise to a countervailing pattern of individualized expression and consumption. Today Americans are exposed to more kinds of images and music, choose from an infinite variety of products, and have a range of options in terms of social and sexual arrangements. In short, they enjoy more ways to express their individuality despite the rise of immense global corporations, and this history imaginatively explores every facet of this unique American experience.

Dictionary of Contemporary Spain.......2007-09-13
I was completely disappointed when I received my copy of this book. Had I read the discription a little better I might have been forewarned that it was a very small and short book. The information in the book, what there was of it, was good; probably 4 to 5 stars, but at $90 + it was a complete rip off. I was expecting a large library type reference book, this one is quite the opposite. I returned the book immediately. Well, I did puruse it a bit first. If money isn't an issue, it is a nice "little" book.

Book Description
This dictionary is the very first to cover the whole span of geopolitics from 1870 to the present. The editor and the contributors, noted specialists, clarify what lies behind the theories and the widespread use and misuse of geopolitical doctrines. The 219 entries are fairly lengthy essays about the major schools, doctrines, strategies, people, controversies, and policies of geopolitics in the main countries practicing geopolitics. These experts provide a complete picture of how geographic thinking has influenced statecraft and world politics. The entries are cross-referenced and accompanied by over 660 bibliographical citations. Academic and professional geographers and political scientists will find this volume invaluable.

A Reference for Politicos.......2001-09-14
Quite simply, this is a fairly comprehensive biographical reference of those who play roles in politics that are in any way visible on the international level. Mostly, it is helpful for those obscure references to long-dead and/or faraway politicians whose names sound, perhaps, familiar. I recommend this book as a companion to political writings generally.

Book Description
There are 19 species of owls in North America and a spectacularly-illustrated chapter is devoted to each in this intriguing natural history narrative. Author Jim Burns takes the reader on a journey of discovering owls during his travels across the United States. His two rules of owlingthat owls never appear when and where they are expected, and that owls always appear when and where they are least expectedset the tone for this informative and exciting excursion into the world of owls. The essays are combined with stunning full-color images of these elusive birds, and as these birds are so often heard and not seen, an audio CD is part of this complete owl package, showcasing the magnificent calls of these beautiful and mysterious birds. Jim Burns has been photographing birds for over 20 years. Widely known and appreciated in the birding world, he has been published in Birding, Birders World, and the Cactus Wrendition.

Who Gives A Hoot?.......2007-01-24
I've always been intrigued by owls. Jim Burns has as well. His knowledge and expertise are rivaled only by his sincerity and passion. His goal, via this book, is not so much that you come to understand owls...but that you come to appreciate owls. His goal is mightily accomplished.
Great book, Great pictures.......2007-01-09
Wow, what great photography. Jim Burns without question knows how to use a camera as well as his pen. The stories make me want to plan my next trip out into the wilderness. I will use the photography as a refrence for years to come. nice work
Five-hooters, eight-hooters, great hooters.......2005-02-20
All of my favorite scenes in the Harry Potter movies involve owls. Now that I live in the woods, I can hear owls hooting almost every night, but how can I go about identifying them? Is there someone out there who is even nuttier about owls than I am? Someone who has actually spent nights out in the woods with a flashlight and camera, identifying these mysterious birds? The answer of course, is yes. Jim Burns, author of "North American Owls" doesn't write a 'mere' natural history text about these (mostly) nocturnal predators. He also narrates his journeys of discovery, from Alaska to southern Arizona, usually accompanied by Deva and the bumbles (his wife and two boys). His stories sing a mysterious, mythical, even mystical nocturne. He familiarizes us with "the more nebulous and mysterious aspects of [the owls'] darker side."
Owls are creatures of wisdom, harbingers of death. Even a naturalist of "reputed backcountry acumen and skill feels a little shaky thrashing around in the dead of night chasing ghosts." The chapter on Long-Eared Owls is written as a poem, and many of the narratives of other North American owls lapse into blank verse.
The book's photographs equal the beauty and strangeness of the text. One photograph of a Short-Eared Owl shows its head rotated so that its beak is pointed at 'two-o'clock.' I knew owls could swivel their heads around to look over their backs, but I had no idea they could rotate them like the hands of a clock. I laugh every time I come across this photo. The photos also capture the predatory nature of owls: bloody bits of rabbit and mouse dangling from their claws and beaks.
The author, Jim Burns, has been photographing birds for over 20 years and many of the pictures in this book are his. I am guessing from the text that his favorite photograph is one he took of a Northern Pygmy-Owl, silhouetted against a hazy solar disk, mouse clutched in talons--more art than identification photograph. My own favorite is of a soaring Snowy Owl, because that's the only owl I've ever seen, gliding down the road ahead of me on a cold December evening. I swear its wings spanned the entire width of the state highway. Big. Silent. Snow-colored. Eerie. A visitor from the Arctic that we Michiganders are rarely privileged to see.
This book also contains sidebars with identification features, habits, and range/habitat maps. A CD is included with the book that contains the vocalizations of all nineteen owls included in the text. My only complaint is that the author did not include his own vocalizations on each track in order to identify the owl that is hooting, screeching, or barking. You have to follow the track numbers in order to identify the owl--a small complaint indeed, concerning a very fine book.
Incidentally, one of the things I learned from this book is that Harry Potter's owl Hedwig is a MALE Snowy Owl.
Journey.......2004-06-17
Instead of creating another field guide, bird photographer Jim Burns has approached writing this book from a different angle. Covering 19 species of North American owls, he sets about describing his own personal observations and experiences with each species in a "journal of owling". His style of writing brings forth the mysterious and illusive side of owls and owling, creating in the reader a sense of desire to experience the owls as he did.
The writings for each species are accompanied by beautiful photographs, including wing detail from above and below. There is also a brief statistics table for each species covering description, size, vocalization, nesting, movements, habits, range and habitat.
Accompanying the Book is short audio CD containing the calls of each of the species in the book. Generally, it is the main call, but several tracks have alternative songs as well. For this reason, it would have been good to have a more detailed track listing than the one provided in the book.
Overall, "North American Owls, a Journey through a Shadowed World" is a splendid experience for any owl lover, and is likely to draw all readers to this unique bird family.
Wonderful Photographs.......2004-05-17
Mr. Burns has done a wonderful job in putting together this book for use by either a layman or a serious birdwatcher. I had the fortune to meet Jim and his wife Deva and they are fascinating people. Jim came across as very knowledgeable not just about owls, but about North American birds in general. His photography is superb despite the inherent difficulty of photographing owls. And the accompanying narrative is a delight to follow. Kudos to Mr. Burns for succeeding admirably on a challenging topic!
