Book Description
In theory, bumblebees should not be able to fly, but they do. Because they have to. But people, no matter how smart or how skilled they might be, do not always get off the ground. We are all born with common sense, but we don't always or often use it.
Must we drift without direction the rest of our lives?
Are we doomed if we seem incapable of using our common sense?
No, says bestselling author and professional speaker Barry Siskind. In Bumblebees Can't Fly, he shows you how to develop and follow his Seven Strategies of Common Sense. After mastering these simple yet shrewd strategies, you will begin to make more confident decisions, improve your foresight, listen to the wisdom already deep within you and fly, like the bumblebees!

Interesting title but didnt find a lot of substance.......2006-09-12
I am into these type of books and enjoy the motivation involved usually but didnt find a lot of meat here. It is an okay book but found the points made obvious and had to make myself keep reading. I have a personal policy of finishing every book I start so I kept going and found it just okay to me. The strategies of doubt the obvious, know yourself and stay on course ... just didnt ring my bell but then maybe its just me.
Tool of dreamers.......2004-09-25
Each page and each author's think bring us up the value of faith and self-esteem in our lives. In this book you find examples to believe that difference between possible and impossible thinks are separeted by, and only, dreamers and commom people.
Great read.......2004-09-23
A great read with some good solid advice. Would definitely recommend to people who need a little nudge towards fulfilling their full potential.
We can fly as well.......2004-09-22
Barry Siskind is one individual who believes in people's potential. Siskind's inspirational book is filled with stories and lessons that are not rocket science, they are common sense. Bumblebee's Can't Fly taught me how to trust my intuition and listen to my inner voices.
Book Description
The two volumes of Understanding Civil War build upon the World Bank's prior research on conflict and violence, particularly on the work of Paul Collier and Anke Hoeffler, whose model of civil war onset has sparked much discussion on the relationship between conflict and development in what came to be known as the "greed" versus "grievance" debate. The authors systematically apply the Collier-Hoeffler model to 15 countries in 6 different regions of the world, using a comparative case study methodology to revise and expand upon economic models of civil war. The book concludes that the "greed" versus "grievance" debate should be abandoned for a more complex model that considers greed and grievance as inextricably fused motives for civil war.

complex causes of civil war.......2006-04-07
The book gives coverage of recent civil wars throughout the world. Noteworthy because outright "traditional" wars seem less prevalent these days. Only to be replaced by lower level conflicts mostly confined within national boundaries.
It is argued that the causes of a civil war can be manifold, and not necessarily reduced to an exclusive-or choice between unsatisfied grievances of an ethnic or regional group and the greed of a central government. Elements of both can often be found in the wars surveyed in the text. But one should also try to look for causes specific to each conflict.

Brilliant book.......2006-12-14
This is the classical and ironically still the best history of the Zulus ever written, authorative and not dated after all these years. The Zulus were a tribe of Bantu speakers who immigrated sometime in the 1500-1600s from what is today Tanzania and Mozambique into modern SOuth Africa. THere they came up against the Xhosas, Swazis and Sotho as well as other tribes. The Zulu were something of the Romans of Africa, inventing a new fighting style that led them to crush other tribes. In fact the period of Zulu hegemony is known as the 'crushing' to this day. As the Zulus expanded in the mid 1800s they came upon the Dutch speaking Afrikaaners who were fleeing British rule at the Cape and war resulted. LAter in 1879 when the Zulus had been pushed and hemmed into eastern south Africa they defeated a number of British columns until finally being overwhelmed. Their hereditary chiefs run the tribe to this day and Chief Buthelezi, who ran Zululand until 1994 and led the Inkatha Freedom Party in SOuth Africa since, penned an introduction. This is a book from the Zulu point of view but nevertheless a brilliant account proving that the 'racism of orientalism' is a complete fabrication. The British loved and admired the Zulus.

None Better.......2006-08-04
This is the "gold standard" for histories on the Zulu nation and its' wars. The writing is excellent, easy to read and very informative. Excellent research allows the author to document facts. This is the place to start and might be the book that you want to read as a review after your studies are completed.
The Washing of the Spears.......2006-05-18
I first bought this book in the early 70s and found it both a fascinating read and a "ripping yarn". I am on my fourth edition of this book (the others have been borrowed and not returned or worn out on campaign). The book gives an excellent history of the "people of heaven" written before the era of political correctness that characterises much of the modern work on this emotional subject. Contrary to much popular opinion it is not a one sided book, British and colonial officers and officials are critiscised when necessary and I do not believe anyone can take offense at the "noble savage" depiction of the Zulus. The book covers the origins of the Zulu nation from the very start up until the defeat at Ulundi and the political consequences thereafter.
The battles are described in some detail and still set my heart racing whether they are describing inter tribal wars or those between the Zulus and their British or Boer enemies, the defeat (or victory depending upon your point of view) at Isandlwana is a particularly exciting read. One reviewer has said "if you only buy one book, this should be it" I agree entirely, it is without doubt the most interesting and entertaining book I have ever read (about 20 times) and would strongly recommend it to anyone with an interest in history, colonial or otherwise
If you only buy one book...........2006-02-20
A timeless work and for many people the definitive. Suggested by some to be out of date, but jeez - it is just so good to read. Many other excellent texts dealing with the topic, but if you only want one, make it this one.
Still the definitive work, and very enjoyable, too!.......2006-01-31
Several of the previous reviewers describe Morris' masterwork as "outdated" or even "dated," yet they provide no real evidence for their claims. I suspect they really mean it ignores the political sensibilities in vogue among some 21st century readers, and what history worth it's salt wouldn't be expected to? This is a work of objective history. Its narrative is accurate. Events which happened after it was written are, of course, not included, but since the period covered by the book ends in the 19th century, that's hardly a problem. Far from being just a military history of the Zulu War, "The Washing of the Spears" begins with a survey of African history beginning in prehistoric times which should be particularly instructive to any interested modern reader because it is free from the political pressures which today intrude upon even the best efforts. For example, I think it will come as a surprise to those educated in this age of historical revisionism to learn that no native population existed in South Africa at the time Europeans first arrived.
In short, this is a great history, worth its weight in gold, and very enjoyable, too!

The most difinative account of the short life os this nation.......1999-04-07
This book deals with the rise of the Zulu Nation under Shaka to its fall under Ceteswayo. There are no glossed over facts, and the last reprint in 1996 has a covering prologue from Chief Mangasuto Buthelese. Any military historian with a keen interest in this Nations short life should make this book their top archive source. This book is still availble from some of the UK outlets priced at around £15.99. This history of the Black Spartans is a must. It tells of their true courage against unsormountable odds to defend their homeland against a well equiped and disciplined army, but also shows that they themselves were just as highly disciplined, and sure footed, and were not afraid to pitch Assegia and Cowhide shield agains, field guns, boxer henry .45 martini henrys, gatling guns and the formidable British Red Coats.
A truthful history of South Africa-a real eye-opener.......1998-09-19
I don't believe that you will find a more accurate, concise and truthful book on the history of South Africa. I say truthful because it contradicts current day, politically correct thinking about how and who actually settled and developed South Africa.
The best account of the Zulu War.......1998-05-21
I have a 1965 copy of this great book and I don't think that there has been a better account of the rise & fall of the Zulu nation. This is one of the best accounts of how the Zulu nation become one of the most feared in Africa under Shaka and how it fell to ruin under Cetshwayo during the war with England in 1879. A great read that has not aged in these 30 odd years. This book has been the standard that all others have been compared to since its publication. It's one of my all time favourite books and I have no hesitation in recommending it to anyone who has a love for this period or a passion for history.
Usutu! Where is my Asagi?.......1998-03-04
Did you ever watch the movie "Zulu" featuring Michael Caine, Stanley Baker and Jack Hawkins(among others) when you were a kid? Did you marvel at the bravery of the Rourke's Drift defenders? I know I did! Well...its nearly all true. Get this book and find out the real story. I love Welsh choirs! But seriously, if you are interested in this particular episode of British imperialism read the book. Its better than Isandlawana!
An in depth view of main players of S.African history.......1998-02-03
The most concise depiction of the clash between the European and native African cultures. This book pulls no punches, and seeks to tell this epic tale without prejudice. It may at times infuriate you but will always intertain. Includes: Battle of Isandlawana, Roark's drift, Hlobane, and Napolean III.

Accurate; written in a brilliant and entertaining style........1999-11-01
There can be no doubt that, of all the books written on Zulu history, this is the kingpin of them all. It is doubtful that any author will exceed the work done here by Laband. The book is painstakingly written, with an incredible eye for detail, and it remains at all times entertaining and absorbing. There are also shortcomings, although these cannot be construed as downfalls. The most striking is that while Professor Laband is the ultimate expert on the reign of Dingane and beyond, he does not dedicate nearly as much attention to the early years of the Zulu kingdom, particularly from 1787 to 1828. This is regrettable, but understandable considering that there is so much that remains unknown and mired in mythology with respect to Shaka's era. Lastly, Laband's attention to detail, particularly noticeable in the Notes section and in the index, makes this a book no self-respecting Zulu scholar can be without.

The Canada Goose (Nature Walk)
ASIN: 0809319241 |
Book Description
The first edition of The Giant Canada Goose summarized the history and rediscovery of a supposedly extinct subspecies of Canada goose—the locally nesting goose familiar to the early farmers and naturalists of the Midwest and eastern plains. In this edition, Harold C. Hanson brings us up-to-date.
Goose expert Hanson recounted in the first edition what we then knew about the biology of this regional social population of the giant Canada goose, which now numbers over a million as a result of federal and state restoration programs. In fact, in many areas, the nonmigrational population is sufficiently numerous to be regarded as a pest, especially in suburban areas.
In his preface to the first edition, Hanson notes that his study "is not just a review of what is known of a supposed extinct race of Canada geese but is an attempt to summarize our knowledge of a race still moderately abundant in parts of the prairie provinces of Canada and in some areas of the United States."
Hanson notes in the preface to this revision that in a completed, comprehensive study of the taxonomy and evolution of the white-cheeked geese, the giant Canada goose will be recognized as a separate species (the giant prairie goose, Branta maxima), which in turn is comprised of seven well-defined subspecies.
After outlining the history of the rediscovery of the giant Canada goose, Hanson describes its physical characteristics, breeding range, migration patterns, wintering grounds, and nesting patterns. He includes seventy-four illustrations, thirty-one tables, two morphometric diagrams, and eleven feather mineral profiles.

Review from overseas.......2001-12-20
The book is very good. It's a real gem for wildfowl enthusiasts. For us here in Germany it is quite hard to get good books on wildfowl. That is the reason why I ordered the book in the US.
The book gives a good impression on this species. Furthermore, it clearly shows the work invested and the time spent by the author to collect all the data.
In Europe the Canada Goose was introduced in the 17th century for game sport reasons. Starting in the UK it spread all over Europe. Nowadays it's a common species on dams, reservoirs and public park ponds. Sometimes the geese are very tame and they are ,therefore, a delight for children and elderly people who often feed them in these parks.
Although we do not have the Giant Canada Goose here in Europe the book gives a good overview on the species behaviour. I am a wildfowl photographer and book helps me to understand their behaviour during the year.
The book is good.......1999-08-27
The book was good only there were a few things left out.The Giant Canada goose has a white bar across it's face, ther are 11 subspecies(one being extinct). The cackler is the smallest of all,Aleutian is endangered, geese in the US dont fly south, they fly to the Northwest corner of the US and Canada, geese fom Canada fly south to the same area, other than that the book was great!!!I would love to meet and work with "Branta" sometime...
